For two years, a fragile peace has taken hold over the Galaxy.
This peace, brought about by an armistice signed in 3594, brought an end to the nearly eight-year-old war that ravaged the Galaxy from the far reaches of the Outer Rim to the Core Worlds at the heart of the Republic. Open warfare between the Galactic Republic and Sith Empire halted as both sides relished the chance to rebuild and rearm, embroiling the galaxy in a very tense cold war.
The war began in 3602, when the newly-reborn Sith Empire -- at the time formed by a collection of aristocrats from Outer Rim worlds -- launched an invasion into the Republic’s frontier systems. The Sith Empire, bolstered by the Sith Order’s rebirth, swept through the Outer Rim, welcoming worlds who voluntarily broke away from the Republic to join their cause and taking others by force.
The Republic, massive and slow to bring the weight of its military, industrial, and economic might to bear against the invaders, suffered loss after loss while the Jedi Order squabbled amongst itself over whether to join the war in full. Key worlds, such as Mon Calamari, Dantooine, Rhen Var, and Yaga Minor fell to the Sith onslaught.
Meanwhile, the Mandalorians, regaining strength from their devastating defeat in a crusade against the Republic a half century prior, went to war to reclaim the former worlds the crippling Arasuum Treaty stripped from them. With the emergence of new Mandalores, Onderon, Gargon, and other old Mandalorian worlds were reconquered from Republic control.
In 3599, the Sith Empire launched an assault on Taris. The invasion was a success in that it stripped the world, which the Republic had poured untold resources into rebuilding since the Jedi Civil War, from Republic hands. It was a disaster in that the world is now a Rakghoul-infested no-man’s land. With both sides suffering heavy casualties, the battle for the planet became known as the Death of Taris.
With Taris lost, the Sith Aristocracy cried for someone to pay the price for the disaster. Darth Renata, a member of the Sith Order’s Inner Sanctum, answered their call with a public “execution” of Darth Novus, the architect for the Battle of Taris. Even after the execution, rumors, often discounted as little more than lunacy, claim she’s assumed a new life in the Galaxy’s dark underbelly. Some years later, Renata would claim the title of Sith Empress for herself, and unite the Sith Order and Empire under her solitary rule.
After the disaster at Taris, the war intensified as the Republic -- now with the Jedi Order fully involved in the war effort -- and Sith traded blows across the Galaxy. The Sith would capture a system or sector, only for the Republic to reclaim it or take another one, and vice versa. The war settled into this state for a number of years until in 3596, the Sith Empire launched a massive assault into the inner reaches of the Republic with the goal of putting an end to the conflict.
The assault pushed deep into the Republic, breaching the defensive strongholds of the Inner Rim and Colonies, and breaking into the Core Worlds and to Coruscant itself. Yet for the Sith, success had come too quickly and military leaders overextended the Empire’s forces in a bid to keep the grueling offensive going and bring a swift end to the war.
The Republic stood strong at the Battle of Coruscant in 3595, and the Sith Empire suffered a devastating defeat. After this, the Republic began to push the exhausted Sith forces out of the Core and back through the Inner Rim. Yet even as momentum began to swing in the Republic’s favor, the public outcry from an assault on Coruscant led to the establishing of high-level diplomatic talks for a ceasefire. The Sith Empire, hiding the weakness of its decimated fleets, agreed to the opportunity, and all hostilities ended at the beginning of 3594.
While the Galaxy is officially at peace, neither side has any delusions that the peace will last. The Republic has taken to fortifying itself for what it believes is an inevitable resumption of hostilities, while the Sith Empire deals with internal strife and works to solidify its hold on newly-captured systems.
As part of the agreement, both governments agreed to use Prazhi, an independent world in the Expansion Region, as a neutral zone, with embassies established for communication. Fighting between the Republic and Sith is strictly forbidden on the planet, and weapon access is tightly controlled. Temples or enclaves for either the Jedi or Sith orders are forbidden on Prazhi, but it’s not uncommon to see members of either order on the world.
Though the fighting has nominally ceased, border skirmishes are common, and the Republic and Sith have raced to find third party allies to harry the other side. Meanwhile, Mandalore has issued a call for Mandalorians to hunt Force users across the Galaxy, and many -- but not all -- have risen to answer. The Hutt Cartel, Exchange and Black Sun have engaged in a three-way shadow war for dominance over the Galactic criminal underworld. Some worlds have used the ceasefire to declare independence and forge their own paths.
Few believe the current period, which has gained the moniker ‘The Quiet War’ will last for long. The only question is how long it will take open hostilities to break out again...
