Kailan, or Kay to his friends, is hard to miss. He is tall and leanly muscled, with the sort of lithe grace all of his kind share to some extent. Whether it's chasing down a suspect or parrying endless jabs from the end of a crimson lightsaber, Kailan is more or less forced to stay active. In addition, he keeps up a fairly steady exercise regimen and as a result has some defined bulk, though he remains lean overall. Keeping with the tradition of his fellow Mirialan Jedi, he observes his people's customs of tattooing to commemorate significant milestones or accomplishments. As such, he has three distinct sets of geometric, charcoal-black tattoos: one across his left eye and brow, two similar ones on each shoulder, and a third, the most intricate, across his upper back. Kay's face is sharp and serious, often curled into a preoccupied frown. Even so, he is quite handsome, and gets a fair number of compliments on his bright, cyan eyes. He usually keeps his straight, onyx hair back in a sort of bun or other such practical arrangement. Loose, it reaches almost down to his shoulders. When he can get to a barber, he likes to have the sides and back shaved to keep cool. For clothing, Kay likes to stay practical. He usually dons one of a few sets of light, airy robes, sometimes with his hooded cloak if it's cool. He has more traditional robes and a couple sets of civilian clothes, which he wears as appropriate. Personality Profile Like so many sentinels finding themselves on strange worlds and in strange predicaments, Kailan isn't your typical Jedi. A youth forged by war and an unorthodox education have hardened him somewhat, and he is perhaps more practical and less scrupulous than many of his colleagues. Nevertheless, he is zealously committed to the tenets of the Jedi, and takes his duty to protect the innocent and expose darkness very seriously. Even if he has a serious, dutiful bent, Kay is friendly and hard to offend. After spending most of his youth with the Jedi and the rest fighting the Sith, Kay took a great interest in how the normal people of the galaxy live, and still has an adolescent fascination with vice. For better or for worse, Kailan is a quick thinker and a quick actor. He's as educated as any Jedi, but his strengths have never been intellectual; the Watchman prefers practical applications of wit to solve problems to hypotheticals and deliberation. This leads to no small amount of frustration with the Order's hierarchy when they meet problems with inaction. Background Father • Niles Sahar, holotechnician, 53 Mother • Kiara Adus, lobbyist, 48 Other Important Connections • TBD Overall History • Kailan has a story so like that of his myriad brothers and sisters in the Jedi Order. Born on the world of Mirial, he was tested for midichlorians at birth, and taken by a local Seeker. This was hardly out of the ordinary, as many of his kind served in the Order, and had for millennia. So even from his earliest memories at the Temple on Coruscant, Kay can remember feeling like he belonged, despite being light years away from his natural home and family. From a young age, Kay was full of energy and athletic, surpassing many of his peers in gymnastics and early sparring lessons. He was a passable student, and was proficient if not adept in his rudimentary force lessons. Overall, he was a promising, if unremarkable youngling. He aimed to change that at ten, when he volunteered to compete against other youngling hopefuls in the annual Apprentice Tournament in hopes of catching the attention of a potential master. There he did quite well, advancing several rounds before being set back by a precocious Zabrak, who outmatched his physical advantage with superior mastery of the Force. Attract a master Kailan did, but not for his combat performance. Burl Yindar was a Jedi Knightand something of a minor celebrity within the Order, made infamous by his unorthodox methods and irreverence to the council. But he was also known as a determined and effective investigator, notably rooting out the fearsome Zanzan Family of Metellos. Kay impressed him, not with his swiftness or resolve, but with his demeanor. Most Initiates, no matter their efforts to hide it, were visibly deflated by their defeats, but Kay seemed to roll with the punches in more ways than one. Rather than wrap himself in the soft comfort of self-loathing, Kay immediately set out to improve himself in the sparring hall, where Yindar met him and offered to instruct him. At first, almost regretted accepting. Yindar, a middle-aged Cerean with a gruff demeanor, was not nearly as ginger with his shortcomings as the youngling instructors had been. Every day began well before dawn, when the seemingly tireless Yindar drilled and drilled him in all manner of combat, including blasters, martial arts, and his preffered form, Djem So. As his adolescence passed on, he and Yindar began venturing further and further from the Jedi Temple. They mostly went to the lower levels of Coruscant, where Yindar first introduced him to the world of the Jedi Investigator, that of subterfuge and guile in service of truth. Later in his apprenticeship, they would visit increasingly distant, strange worlds to complete every variety of mission. It was in those years that Kay constructed his lightsaber, a long-handled, basic design he chose for maximum versatility. To commemorate the event, he had a pair of matching geometric designs tattooed on either shoulder. In addition to investigative techniques and a renewed focus on practical Force applications, Yindar also demanded that he learn to pilot and maintain a starship, reasoning that a Jedi should be self-sufficient and able to quickly respond to calls for aid, both near and scattered. Before he could properly train for the Knighthood trials, the War started. He and Yindar were called to the front to fight alongside the Republic military. Yindar's insistence on piloting had gone a long way, but it was there, at the front, that Kay really became a pilot. He and his master were often assigned to protect important convoys or emissaries as they traveled through contested territory. Naturally, they encountered battle. Over the course of the war, Kay and his master flew countless combat missions, many of them successes, all of them savage. They also crossed sabers more than a few times with the Sith. On the Imperial battleship Radiance, Kay killed truly for the first time. Sure, he had downed dozens of Sith pilots, but that had been in the silent void of space, where there were no pleas for mercy, no screams. As part of a boarding party, he lead a squad of Marines as they attempted to seize the ship's gunnery deck. There he met Kindra, a familiar Zabrak who he soon discovered was the very same padawan that had bested him at the Tournament a decade earlier. Apparently, she had fallen far, far from the light, betraying the Jedi and becoming an acolyte of the Sith. They engaged in a fearsome duel as the battle roared around them. Her power had grown immensely; barrage after barrage assailed Kay as he tried to find an opening amid the tight bladework of her violet saberstaff. Finally, she was caught off guard by the explosion of a nearby munitions crate and Kay gained the upper hand. He backed her into a corner before splitting her weapon in two and delivering the killing blow, which severed her head with a sickly hiss. The Republic won a pyrrhic victory that day, though Yindar was grievously injured in his own duel with the ship's commander and was confined to Coruscant for convalescence after his leg was amputated. From the Temple's medbay, Yindar deliberated with the Council and convinced them that Kailan's performance in the preceding battle and throughout the war were sufficient to pass the Jedi Trials. After some disagreement, they assented, and at twenty-three, Kailan was a brand-new Jedi Knight. There was no celebration however, as Kailan returned to the front and continued to fly combat missions and lead Republic forces over the next two years. He became a truly skilled fighter pilot, garnering respect among his comrades-in-arms and even among the illustrious Jedi Aces. As the war drew to a close, Kay was at a bit of a loss. He was glad he and Yindar had made it through alive, and could finally feel a sense of pride at being knighted. He had another tattoo added across his upper back, patterned after that of an ancient Mirialan warrior who returned home from war after a long-delayed journey. With fewer battles to fight, he would need to apply his skills elsewhere. At his master's suggestion, he volunteered to serve as a Jedi Watchman over the Mid Rim, where he began his service on the newly-Republic world of Iridonia. It was an odd adjustment at first, but Kay found he liked working with the local authorities to fight crime; it reminded him of commanding soldiers in the war. He also enjoyed moving from sector to sector to address the concerns of the locals. A lot of times it was routine stuff, but every now and then he would uncover an illicit spice ring or arms trafficking syndicate. Once, he even teamed up with a Jedi Shadow to hunt down a band of Iridonian cultists in possession of a valuable Sith artifact. With the Archeri Crisis, he was again thrust into intense conflict. He fought at Nar Shadaa, both in space and up close and personal with the fungal monstrosities. He didn't make it through unscathed, but again he thanked the Force for his survival.
