Name: Sienn'numa (Rendered "Sien Numa" in Basic)
Race: Lethan Twi'lek
Age: 29
Height:
6'10"
Weight: 198 lbs
Appearance: Slender and taller than average by Twi'lek standards, red-skinned and dark-eyed. Contrarily to most female Twi'lek, which tend towards revealing, skintight attire, she wears the traditional loose-fitting, tan-and-brown robes of a Jedi Knight on most occasions.
Personality: Sienn'numa is mostly fairly calm and somewhat more philosophical than one would expect.
She can become very introverted at times, in which case she will spend much time meditating, usually alone, or spend entire days poring over the Archives. But other than these usually short fits she is well-mannered and generally quite pleasant, and while she dislike idle gossip, enjoys the company of her peers.
Birth place: Kala'unn, Ryloth (Gaulus sector, Ryloth system, Grid coordinates R-17)
Faction: Jedi Order
Rank: Knight/Sentinel
Bio:
CHILDHOOD
Sienn'numa was born on the underground city of Kala'unn, in the Lonely Five Mountain Range of the planet Ryloth. Her father was a moderately successful rycrit herder, and her mother was a dancer employed in one of the clubs in the upper levels.
Sien showed what her parents termed "strange powers" from an early age. At first it wasn't much - quicker reflexes than was usual for one so young, a peculiar awareness of the feelings of those around her. These oddities, as they perceived, grew rapidly - as did Sien herself, and it became quickly apparent that she would grow to be among the taller Twi'lek.
Her parents' plans had initially been to raise her as a dancer, like her mother, and eventually either take her to be employed by one of the upper-level establishments or, if that did not work out, sell her into slavery to some wealthy politician or businessman.
Those plans were brought to a grinding halt one day, when Sien was barely two years old, by the arrival on Ryloth of Vi'linia Qam, a Miraluka Jedi Consular. On the way back from a mission to Wrea, another planet in the Gaulus sector, Vi'linia sensed a presence in the Force, which led her to the mountain city.
Though it took a great deal of convincing, Vi'linia was able to obtain permission from the mother to remove Sien from Ryloth to Coruscant, where she would be trained to use her latent abilities as a Jedi - a far happier existence than that of a slave. The father took a different view, but agreed on the basis that even though it was a potential source of future income lost, it was one less drain on their scant financial resources in the short run.
Sienn'numa thus left the scorching desert planet for the bustling capital, and the peace of the Jedi Temple. With Vi'linia leading her by the hand, she was tested by the Council, and admitted into the Temple for training. Vi'linia remained for some months, watching Sien grow, until her next mission took her away from Coruscant, much to Sien's sadness - as, in that brief time, the child had come to regard the Consular as a surrogate mother.
It would be over ten years before they saw each other again.
Sien was pensive, intelligent, and, once she’d learned how to read, a voracious reader who spent almost the entirety of her spare time in the Archives. Very quickly, it became apparent that she was a strong telepath, and extremely sensitive to fluctuations in the Force, an advantage that she used to offset her less developed skills in telekinesis, and put to great use in lightsaber training. In this she moved with a fluid grace that made her look as though she were dancing - an odd peculiarity born of her heritage, and one which her instructors and especially her sparring partners found disorienting.
Tall for a Twi'lek, she towered over most of her classmates, but she was much-liked because her size deterred the more unruly older students who at times picked on the younger classes.
Though she could've used her size to her advantage, for the most part she did not, and when she argued with a classmate only rarely let it come to physical blows. One of the very few times she did, she shoved another youngling with whom she had argued - perhaps a little harder than she had meant to, and the boy fell, scraping his leg rather badly. She promptly apologized, then took him to the infirmary and with the help of the Healers, bandaged the injury herself. The youngling and Sien were later reconciled, and became excellent friends.
While she was not terribly good at it, Healing was something else she applied herself to learning, and though it was not her specialty by any means, she became at least decent at it. She made the most progress in the use of Telepathy and Sense, as well as in lightsaber training. Her classes especially in terms of the nature and peculiarities of the Force fascinated her, and she was known by name to many of the librarians who worked in the Archives. However, though she had many friends, she was more reserved and less exuberant than most of her classmates, because she was quite a bit larger than them: at the age of six she was almost as tall as younglings twice her age.
Interestingly, she also had friends among the older students, with whom she could more readily exert herself without having to worry about injuring her playmates.
When Sien turned twelve she was close to six feet tall. Many of her friends, especially the older ones, had long since left the Temple, to become Knights, farmers, or other occupations, wherever the Force led them. At this time, she began with real concern to think about finding a Master with whom she could apprentice. But she had already found one, long before, as she was soon to learn.
APPRENTICESHIP
A few short months before her thirteenth birthday, Sien's instructors requested that she report for testing before a Jedi Knight who was at the Temple in search of a Padawan, though he withheld the Knight's name. Sien assented and, the following day, reported as instructed.
She faced a student who was slightly younger than she, and she was a full head taller than him. For that reason, she deliberately restrained herself to defensive moves with her lightsaber, relying instead on the Force to counter his attacks. The duel lasted a good twenty minutes, and while it was exhausting for both, the other student, forced on the offensive, began to slow, and she saw her opening. He attacked, a high diagonal slash from the left and, parrying, she shoved his blade back with her own, and used the Force almost immediately afterwards in a mild push on his right leg. The student was thrown off-balance, nearly losing his footing, and dropped his saber. When he reached for it, she pushed it into a far corner of the room. He yielded.
Exhausted, she turned towards her instructor, who nodded approvingly, and past him at the Jedi. She was unable to bite back a cry of surprise as after a few moments she recognized Master Vi'linia Qam. The Miraluka's hair was a little grayer than it had been, her face perhaps a little more lined.
Vi'linia took Sien as her Apprentice, and as they left, gave her her first true lightsaber – one that the Miraluka herself had assembled in her youth, and no longer used.
Under the Miraluka's tutelage, Sien's training continued, and Master Vi'linia taught Sien more advanced forms of lightsaber combat. Though a Consular, and as such less versed in lightsaber combat than in the intricacies of the Force and its abilities and uses, Vi'linia was a skilled practitioner of Forms II and V, and used the two interchangeably, frequently blending elements of the two when fighting - resulting in a hybrid style that was more precise and focused than ordinary Shien, but had greater momentum and power behind its attacks than Makashi traditionally did.
Sien, it turns out, though skilled and agile, lacked the control and precision necessary for Makashi, and criticized the form as being too limited – as it was developed specifically to counter blades, and in particular lightsabers, it was less effective against other types of weapons – such as blasters. Conceding the point, Vi'linia therefore opted to teach her Padawan Shien/Djem So, and the young Twi’lek learned with great interest. After several years, seeking to further expand her knowledge of the Form, she began experimenting with a less common sub-form of Djem So which used a back-handed grip, with the blade held reversed. She spent much time on this, and soon became fairly good at it, though not quite as skilled as in the more conventional form.
Their lessons in combat and sparring matches were oft followed by extensive discussions of the nature of the Force, which usually proved interesting because the two adopted very different philosophies: The Miraluka was a proponent of the Unifying Force, which centered around understanding the future and its possibilities, stressing the belief that the Force was neither Light nor Dark, it simply was. Sien, on the other hand, espoused the doctrine of the Living Force, which did indeed view the Force in terms of polar opposites, and focused on sensitivity to the living world, and relied much more on instinct.
One other thing Sienn'numa had been keen to learn was to pilot. At the age of sixteen, she began to learn to ride her Master’s speeder, a venerable old bike which could mount a sidecar, and which the two had oft used on Coruscant. A few years later, under the tutelage of an old friend of her Master’s, a Duro named Jenlor Somoth, she began to learn to pilot a civilian-type Aurek strikefighter. The craft had been stripped of its weapons and sold on the civilian market years ago, but Jenlor had quietly refitted it with two heavy laser cannons, though it lacked the torpedo launchers of its military counterparts. She liked the craft, which was sleek, elegant, nimble, and above all, fast.
She became quite a good pilot, though it is a skillset she rarely has the occasion of using.
LIGHTSABER
When Sienn'numa was nineteen years old, she and her Master traveled to on a mission to Dantooine, tracking a smuggling ring that was hiding a base of operations on the planet, and had, to that point, been able to evade the Jedi who had attempted to locate them from the Enclave. Thus, Master Vi'linia's assistance was requested by the Chalactan Jedi Klara Nobaada, who had been at the Academy at the same time as Vi'linia. The mission was completed successfully when Vi'linia, using the Force, located one of them, and was able, with the help of Master Nobaada as well as her Padawan, to track him to their base of operations. The two remained on Dantooine for a few days before they had to return to Coruscant.
During this time, Sien took to long walks around the areas outside the Enclave, and at one point during the course found herself in a maze of tunnels, in which she became lost. Relying entirely on the Force to guide her and to avoid the lifeforms which she faintly sensed all around the tunnels, she kept on, following the complex network until she emerged into an enormous cavern. There, she found two things: An incredible number of glowing lightsaber crystals, and massive nests, many of them containing eggs. Having read about it in the Archives on Coruscant, she realized she had stumbled into the Crystal Cave of Dantooine, counterpart to the same on Ilum. She collected a few particularly beautiful ones before being attacked by kinrath, the lifeforms she had sensed earlier, which nested in the caves. Primarily using the Force, she held back the insectoid nonsentients as best she could. Vi'linia sensed her Padawan’s use of the Force and followed her into the cave, where they were both able to drive off the creatures. Over the course of the battle, Sien had accidentally fallen on a kinrath nest, and as she left she saw crystals among the shattered shards of the eggs, colored a lustrous red. She took two and pocketed them as Master and Padawan left the cave.
They left for Coruscant the following day, Vi'linia asking the pilot to allow Sien to pilot the craft that was transporting them home, which he did, and gave her hints and assistance when he felt necessary. Sien welcomed the assistance and the distraction. During the trip the two discussed the experience, and Vi'linia told Siem that upon returning to Coruscant, she would be able to build her own lightsaber.
Sienn'numa spent long hours meditating before she decided to begin. She contemplated the five crystals she had – the two red ones, the others were a pale violet. She pondered her style of combat with the lightsaber she had used before, meditating on what the best way to incorporate all that she had learned would be.
Once she had decided, she set out gathering the materials she would need, with only a little help from her Master, and including the parts from the lightsaber Vi'linia had given her, though not the crystals. She spent many long days meditating over the crystals she would use, imbuing them with the Force, and she began to assemble the weapon itself. The entire process took nearly fifteen days. All told, she had spend a little over a month construction the weapon. The result was about half again the length of an ordinary lightsaber, slender and elegant. More to the point, Sien had constructed a dual-bladed weapon, using two crystals at each end, producing a blade of a bright, violet color, though its hue was slightly reddish because of the crystals used. She took it up for the first time and ignited it, and the blade felt like an extension of her hand, rather than a weapon she held.
Sien’s sparring matches with her Master became more complex following the construction of the new lightsaber, and Vi'linia now often used the Force to create distractions or attacks that the young Padawan would have to deal with. Still more, whereas before she had sparred exclusively with Shien moves, Vi’linia now began using Makashi against her young Padawan in their sparring matches, at times switching unexpectedly from one form to the other. Sien herself also did a great deal of experimenting with this new weapon: Wanting to experiment with the greater potential flexibility of a weapon with twin blades, she began switching back and forth between the two forms of Djem So by alternating the blades used, as well as learning to wield the weapon with both blades ignited, a significantly more daunting task, in which her own natural grace and agility was an enormous help. She soon became almost as proficient with this new form of combat as she was with standard Shien/Djem So, which, however, remained her favorite and most frequently-used form.
