Name: Wat Hammond
Race: Skakoan
Age: 43
Height: 6'2
Weight:164 lbs
Appearance: Like all Skakoans not living on Skako, Wat is constantly enveloped in a pressure suit to prevent him from fatally decompressing in most atmospheres. However, Wat's pressure suit is not the standard blue robes and silvery metal that most Skakoans wear. Out of personal preference, Wat's suit has dark green robes and a chestplate made out of copper. Wat is also hardly ever seen without a walking stick carved from Japor ivory wood, a tree found on Tatooine. This staff also serves to hold the hilt of Wat's lightsaber when he is not carrying it in his hands.
Personality: Wat is a scholar, and this is heavily apparent when speaking to him. He has a vast pool of knowledge he can call references or quotes forth from, and does so quite often. Most Jedi have their quirks, and Wat's is a fondness for observational puns or wordplay, though as he isn't a master of linguistics, these don't come to the forefront often. As a side effect of his vast wealth of knowledge, however, he has a tendency to lapse into discussion of topics only tangentially related to the discussion at hand.
Birth place: Skako
Faction: Jedi Order
Rank:Master-Jedi Researcher
Bio:
Wat Hammond was the child of two Skakoan engineers, Trogdor and Kul Hammond. The two had met while working in the Kuat Drive Yards on a joint project between several Skakoan and Givin design firms to design a new cruiser for the Republic. Trogdor, Wat's father, was the one to make the first move. Kul found the male a little aggressive at first, though she did eventually see the charm he had, also finding amusement at the fervor he displayed when talking about aqueduct systems on Kashyyyk, as only a fellow engineer could.
The two hit it off, and soon found themselves expecting a child. Little Wat was born on Skako, for there was no other world the child could live on without dying immediately after birth. They settled down on the planet, living off of credits earned from previous jobs to support themselves until the time when they decided Wat was old enough to travel off-world with his own pressure suit.
In the four years that Wat spent on Skako, he was a curious little child, especially when it came to the children's holovids and holobooks that his parents purchased for him in entire stacks. Many were the time that little Wat tried to reach one of the top books of the stack, only to have the entire thing come crashing down around him, though he never received anything more damaging than a few bonks to his abdomen. His parents loved their little boo-boo prone baby, spending all the time they could with him.
Unfortunately for the couple, Wat was taken from them shortly after his fourth birthday by a Jedi. The Jedi, another Skakoan, had been sent by the Council to investigate reports of Skakoan scientists experimenting on Midi-chlorians. Though the reports were outlandish, the Council decided it was better to be safe than sorry, and sent the Jedi on the off chance the reports were true. Fortunately though, they were not, and it ended up being a wild Dewback chase. However, Wat and his family were out for a walk one evening while the Jedi was there, and he sensed Wat's Force-sensitivity. He politely stopped the family and asked for their address, explaining the he was a Jedi. Though apprehensive about it, they obliged, giving him their address.
The Jedi came calling the next day, explaining Wat's Force sensitivity to Trogdor and Kul. As before, they were apprehensive, but eventually they gave consent, feeling that letting their son be a Jedi was best for the Galaxy. And so, Wat was whisked away to Coruscant, the Jedi Order paying for the little boy's pressure suit, as well as the guarantee that they would pay for replacement suits whenever he grew too big for the one he was equipped with.
As a youngling, it took some time for Wat to adjust to the fact that there were very few Skakoans in the Order. This was made just a little harder by the prodding and poking of the other younglings, who were genuinely curious about the pressure suit and the funny voice created by the suit's vocalizers. Many times, they asked him if he was a droid, and he said no each and every time. After the initial kerfluffles involving his suit, Wat fit in rather well with his peers, though he wasn't much of one for the silly antics or small pranks other younglings enjoyed.
In classes, Wat never really took the the physical aspects of being a Jedi, such as the lightsaber combat or physical training. No, Wat took to the scholarly classes, history and astronomy most of all. The galaxy itself fascinated little Wat, and he would stick to every single word of lectures about planets and stars and asteroid clusters like smell to a damp Wookiee.
Wat's youngling years passed like this, the little green boy becoming more and more of an aspiring Consular with every passing day. This caught the eye of several older Consulars, though none more so than Gorran Dhur, a Sage Master and prominent Jedi Artisan. At the time, Dhur had crafted many ornate and complex lightsabers, most of which made their way to special display cases in the temple Archives. Dhur watched Wat's growth as a youngling with great interest, and close to Wat's 13th year of life, he officially took the Skakoan as a Padawan.
Their travels through the Galaxy were strictly non-aggressive, mostly sitting in on lectures and diplomatic assemblies, or acting as 'just for show' bodyguards for diplomats or other people of import that didn't need it. However, Dhur also wished to pass a respect for the beauty of the galaxy onto the boy, which led to a great deal of time spent in the wild of forested worlds, the Sullustan giving lectures while Wat took in both his teacher's words and the sounds of whatever flora and fauna existed on the planet. It was also in the wilderness that Gorran began teaching Wat about the lightsaber form that most Consulars trained in: Soresu, the most defensive-minded of all forms. Later in their years together, Gorran would teach Wat the basics of Niman after Wat inquired about it after reading a paragraph about it in a holobook.
There was one lecture in particular that would stick in the back of Wat's mind for the rest of his days: A simple visit to Ralltiir. It didn't turn out violent, and the lecture wasn't particularly deep or profound, but the setting made the words stick in the Skakoan's psyche. While doing an aerial tour of Ralltiir via repulsorcraft, Gorran pointed out the harmony with which the mining, farming, and business sectors of Ralltiir mixed. While such mixed industries were far from uncommon, Wat agreed that Ralltiir seemed to pull it off the best.
Their years together passed like this, and eventually, the two traveled to Ilum so that Wat could construct a lightsaber of his very own. As an Artisan, this was the part of their time together that Gorran had looked forward to the most. They spent a few days in the crystal caverns, exploring the passageways and observing the crystals. Eventually, they came across a crystal growth that Wat could feel calling to him, a group of green crystals that had taken on a paler shade than normal. The agreement was made, and Wat took the crystal. Normally, they would have gone straight back to Crosucant so that Wat could begin meditating over his crystal. But they didn't. Wat chose to focus his crystal then and there, amongst its bretheren. His master had foreseen this, and had packed foodstuffs and supplies to keep them from freezing to death. And so, the two sat in silence, stopping only to satisfy their hunger and thirst so often, as a new focusing crystal was born under the 'eyes' of those that still resided in the caves.
When they returned to Coruscant, the two set to work on building the machiney bits of Wat's lightsaber. Gorran laid out various parts and materials for Wat to choose from. Wat meditated, asking the Force to tell him which to choose. Eventually, the saber was constructed. The hilt was quite long, a little over a quarter of a metre, with a hilt constructed mainly of brass, but was otherwise a standard single-blade, single-phase lightsaber.
With new lightsaber in hand, Wat and Gorran began what would be their final two years together. They travelled to planets they'd already been, attended lectures on subjects they'd heard before. If he'd been younger, Wat would have been confused. But now, being older and wiser, he understood the point; Experiencing the same things over again with a new, more learned perspective.
Unfortunately, their last outing together went rather awry. The two had been on Alderaan attending a lecture on the importance of rice to galactic economy when terrorists backed by a wheat farming company attacked. Wat and Gorran sprang to the defense, despite being severely outnumbered. Initially, they had the element of surprise on their hands, the ragtag group of mercenaries not expecting two Jedi to be at a simple lecture. But they withdrew and regrouped, willing to give their lives for the glory of wheat. In the chaos, Wat's pressure suit was struck by a shotgun pellet, which caused a small leak. The pain was more than the young Skakoan could handle, and he had to withdraw from the fight to get the leak fixed, lest he be crushed into his own suit. This caused the Skakoan to feel great shame, and he spent three days afterwards meditating on his loss.
It was during this meditation that Wat received two visions of himself in the future. The first was Wat as a grey Jedi, having had left the Order. In this vision, he saw himself growing old and finally perishing in peace on Skako, surrounded by his children. The second was Wat as an aging Jedi Master, having plied the trade of Jedi scholar well to the end. However, this vision also showed him dying while fighting against a darksider on Skako to buy time for an evacuation. Faced with the choice of dying a peaceful death as a family man, or dying to save countless lives, the choice was clear to him: He would rather die violently and be a savior than die peacefully as an old man.
Soon after this, Wat's Knighting ceremony came. Surrounded by the Council and with his master at his side, Wat recounted his years as a Padawan. for building his lightsaber, he passed the Trial of Skill. For fighting against the terrorists despite his lack of combat skill, he passed the Trial of Courage. For living through the leak in his pressure suit, he passed the Trial of Flesh. and finally, for choosing the path of the Jedi knowing it might lead to a violent end, he passed the Trial of Spirit.
As a Knight, Wat found a great deal of autonomy open to him. The galaxy was now truly his to roam, explore, and study. Or he could simply choose a Padawan of his own, taking the role of father and mentor to any youngling he chose. Most might have taken the latter path, simply plucked a Padawan from a class and gone straight to teaching.
But Wat didn't. No, Wat chose to devote himself once more to rigorous study and meditation. For three years of his life, Wat did little more than study and meditate. Many times, he would go days holed up in a meditation chamber with datapads and holobooks, only emerging when the supply of food he took into the room with him was exhausted. Through this, Wat understood much of the working of the galaxy, and he felt that this truly was his calling; to study the natural machinations of the galaxy and record his findings so that others could benefit from them.
And so, Wat travelled the galaxy as more of a scholar than a Jedi, taking up various fields of study. As during his Padawan years, he attended conferences, taking notes and sometimes conversing directly with the main speakers afterwards. Every note, every discovery was added to the Temple's archives, Wat glad that in some way, he was helping future generations of Jedi.
After devoting seven years of his Knighthood to being a scholar, Wat finally decided it was time he took a Padawan. He began watching various groups of younglings, looking for the same signs that he had exhibited as a youngling. Eventually, he found a youngling that he thought was ideal: A young Duros girl named Rana Keggle.
Their time together progressed similarly to how Wat and his own master's time had. They spent the first two years in the wilderness on various planets, rigorously studying various datapads and holobooks borrowed from the temple archives.
Then, as he had done numerous times, Wat travelled around to various planets with Rana in tow, exposing her to science conferences and diplomatic assemblies. It brought him pleasent amusement to see the wonder on the little Duros girl's face as she absorbed everything she heard. Though some of it was still over her head, the two years of study in the temple had certainly made her understand a great deal more than she would have otherwise.
They learned about new developments in genetically-altered crops on Kinyen. They saw the multitude of sea life on Pantolomin. They observed a deep space repulsor refinery going through maintenance. Through these scientific ventures, Rana grew wiser as an aspiring Consular, and Wat knew that the feelings of fatherly joy and love for his padawan were no doubt the same that his own master had felt. And so, their years passed like this, Rana's already skilled mind growing sharper, more precise.
Soon, their time was over, and Rana's Trials came and passed. She was given the rank of Jedi Knight, and Wat looked upon her as a younger sister instead of the student she had been. There was great joy in his heart, and he knew that in teaching Rana, he had done a great service to the galaxy, and the Force itself. Shortly after Rana's Knighting ceremony, Wat himself was granted the title of Sage Master for his meritous service to the Order. Wat respectfully thanked the Council, and hurried to a meditation chamber to seek guidance.
Shortly after his promotion, Wat was attending a conference on Alderaan on the pros and cons of establishing permanent biodome colonies on sufficiently large comets when he was approached by a somewhat frazzled-looking woman who, after stating herself to be an amateur wood sculptor, asked Wat if he could explain the concept of biomes to her so she could assist her son with his homework. Pleasantly amused and happy to help a parent in need, Wat walked with the woman, explaining the concept as best he could. Afterwards, she insisted he take a walking stick made out of Japor ivory wood, a species of tree grown on, and exported from, Tatooine, for his troubles. Wat refused at first, but eventually acquiesced to her request, not wanting to offend her. After his return to Coruscant, he made the most of the situation, and modified the stick and his lightsaber so the former served to carry the latter when he himself was not holding it.
Soon after this, Wat travelled back home to Skako. He had decided that it was time for a small change in aesthetics. On Skako, he shed the standard pressure suit that had enveloped him for so many years since his last change, and opted instead for dark green robes and a chestplate made out of copper. While on Skako waiting for his custom suit to be completed, he took the time to explore the planet somewhat, truly experiencing the 'fresh air' of his home planet for the first time since childhood. the experience was pleasant for Wat, something he recalls quite fondly.
