Rune sat in the cockpit of a small shuttle and watched as the very green planet of Mustafar came into view. Situated between two gas giants, the planet looked like a green gem hanging against the backdrop of Space. Despite being in the Outer Rim, it was suppose to be a tranquil world. With a Jedi Enclave planetside, it seemed like the best place to train Kalan, away from the worries of a galaxy.
It had been a week since Rune had taken Kalan as a padawan. The Mon Calamari thought it somewhat early to tell, but they seemed to be bonding well. Kalan seemed to be a quite boy, but he followed instructions well and was good natured. They had continued with their Soresu training, and Kalan seemed to be picking it up well. Perhaps in a day or two once they get settled on Mustafar, Rune would carry on with their Soresu lessons and start on Djem So as well.
And Kalan had seemed to treasure Rune’s gift, Iago’s lightsaber, instantly. The padawan took it everywhere. Rune was happy he did so, and that Kalan treated it as such. It was the symbol of the Jedi. Their lives were tied to their lightsabers in a way. Usually once a Jedi created their own weapon, that would be the weapon they used for the rest of their life.
Rune glanced from the shuttle controls to his own saber hilt resting in his sash. Of course, this hadn’t been true for him. All it took was one screwed up mission when he was a Knight and his first saber had been destroyed. Factory machines had a way of doing that to things they weren’t suppose to be working on. The Jedi Master always felt a pang of guilt when he thought about his first saber. He treasured his current one just as much, but having his first saber destroyed somehow seemed like failing.
The shuttle had dropped out of hyperspace about half an hour ago on their twenty-four hour trip. It was now breaching the atmosphere of Mustafar, and Rune could see the mountain range that housed the Jedi Enclave that would be their home for the foreseeable future. Well, they weren’t so much mountains as very tall hills; Rune figured none of them reached the height of five thousand feet or so.
So far the trip and gone smoothly. Rune had spent a lot of time inside the cockpit behind the controls of the shuttle. Kalan had spent a lot of time in the shared cabin sleeping, or at least Rune assumed so. Rune got the impression the boy didn’t like to fly. That was a shame. It wasn’t Rune’s particular favorite thing to do, but there was something about soaring through Space. It was a beautiful environment. Perhaps one day, if Kalan ever got over it, Rune would put him behind the controls of a ship. But today was not that day. Maybe in a few years.
As Rune approached the Enclave’s landing pad, it started to rain. And rain hard. He saw some Jedi run for the cover of buildings and such, while others merely put up their hoods and continued to work. The rain didn’t bother Rune. He enjoyed moist, wet environments. He was a Mon Calamari after all. But he figured it would still be a good idea to grab the poncho he owned from the cabin. It looked like a thunderstorm was brewing.
The Jedi Master set the shuttle down on all three struts, a very smooth landing, and shut the ship’s engines down. According to local time, it was mid morning. He had let Kalan sleep on the ride in, but now it was time to get him up and start the day.
Rune walked down the hallway and into the cabin that he and Kalan had shared for the past day. But Kalan was no where to be found. Rune reached out with his sense and touched the familiar presence of his padawan, but he was in the cargo hold. Along with transferring to Mustafar, the two Jedi had been tasked with bringing extra supplies to the Enclave as well. Mostly tech stuff such as lightbulbs, power packs, droid and computer parts, and other odds and ends. It was sort of their first mission together. Perhaps Kalan was getting stuff ready to be unloaded? Rune thought that was excellent, as it showed initiative and responsibility on his part.
Donning his grey poncho and picking up his only personal bag, a tan duffle bag that he swung over his shoulder, Rune grabbed Kalan’s things as well. The padawan’s outer brown robe hung on a hook by the door and his brown leather bag sat underneath it. His lightsaber was no where to be found. Rune assumed he took it with him and he left the cabin, now an empty room besides the bunks. As he entered the cargo hold, Rune found something rather weird. He could still sense Kalan, but his force precense seemed to be from a medium sized cargo crate in the back of the hold. That couldn’t be right. The boy wouldn’t climb into a cargo crate would he? As the Jedi Master approached the crate, there seemed to be the crates contents littered around the floor. Mostly power packs.
Rune set down everything he was carrying and lifted the lid of the crate. And there was his padawan alright, curled up in a ball at the bottom of the container. Rune was a bit confused. Why in the world would Kalan sleep inside a shipping container? Did he not like flying that much?
“Kalan? Wh – what are you doing in there?”

Kalan had enjoyed the past week more than anytime in his entire life. The training was hard and tough, but it had been compensated by the feeling that the whole time he was slowly improving making progress and marching steadily on. Soresu, defensive in nature seemed to match his cautious, tentative personality. The real joy had been training with Master Oki, in training Rune could be tough and strict, but that was balanced by a friendly easy going nature outside of training. Kalan had never had someone he felt he could talk to before, but in Rune he found someone who he felt understood and sympathised with his feelings. Kalan had slowly begun to open up and felt he could either discuss things with his Master, or simply sit in companionable silence. Everything was fine…until Master Oki decided to move to the Enclave on Mustafar.
As soon as Kalan saw the ship, he had a sick feeling in his stomach that remained for the whole journey. He vaguely remembered the Republic transport ship, that had brought him to Courscant after being rescued from the spice mines of Ryloth. He had been tired and malnourished, and reaching out with his child like senses, he sensed not the confining rock roof of a spice mine, but a vast empty nothing of space. He had passed out. Ever since then he had developed a case of Agoraphobia. On first entering the JedI Temple, he had felt fear at its vastness, an he had tried to protect himself from that feeling by hiding and sleeping under his bed. Patience of masters and teachers had eventualy paid off and he felt able to wander the halls of the Temple, yet there were still times when he felt a tingle in his spine at crossing the vast empty corridors.
This was the first time since that fateful trip six years ago, that Kalan had even set foot on a space craft. The launch had been horrible, strapped to a chair, whilst the ship was hurled into the depths of space. Kalan had left the cockpit as soon as it was safe, and made a beeline for the shared sleeping compartment. For a few hours he tried to sleep in hopes when he woke up the ordeal would be over. He slept on the bed, and finally under the bed, the few times sleep claimed him he woke up from nightmares of falling through space. Sweat poured off him and he felt ill, all the while feeling stars beaming menacingly down on him, while the ship trundled through space feeling so vulnerable in the Maw all around them.
He could not take it anymore, feeling hot he dropped his outer robe on a hook and abandoned his small bag. He kept hold of the lightsaber it felt comforting some how, and staggered barefoot through the ship looking for a refuge. He ended up in the cargo bay filled with miscellaneous crates. “Maybe if I climb in one I will be safer!” He thought in his tired and fear addled brain. Opening one near the back he found it full of power packs, he quickly took them out being careful not to damage them and climbed into the crate, he pulled the lid over the top, and curled up into a ball around his lightsaber and fell into a dreamless sleep.
Kalan then awoke to the sound of footsteps and the crate opened revealing a dim light and the concerned and baffled face of Master Oki. “Kalan? Wh – what are you doing in there?” Kalan sat up, his empty eye sockets not far from Master Oki’s face, Kalan quickly tied the tatty and worn wrap over them . “Oh Master…I um…” he climbed out of the crate looking pale an swayed a little on the spot. “… I was trying to um….you know…..er feel safe.” He clutched the saber desperately “…Space... there is an awful lot of it isn’t there. Oh my things, I take it that means we are here Master.” he said indicating his outer robe and bag. He shuffled towards Master Oki, and took them from him, his hands were shaking a little. He smiled up at Oki and said “Silly isn’t it? This fear.”

Rune thought he misheard. Kalan was trying to feel safe by sleeping in a crate, that used be full of power packs? And with a fully functioning lightsaber? Kalan climbed out of the crate and Rune handed him his things. Was the boy that deathly afraid of flying?
“…Space... there is an awful lot of it isn’t there?”
Rune chuckled.
“Yes, there is an awful lot of Space. It goes on forever you know. You can jump into a ship and travel any direction, and you’ll still be in Space. Unless you crash on a planet, but then you have a whole new problem.”
The Mon Calamari offered the boy a comforting smile, but on the inside, his wheels were turning. Kalan mentioned there was an awful lot of Space. Rune found him inside a crate. Perhaps he was trying to find a place that was small? Maybe he was afraid of large, open areas? Just another thing they would have to work on, to go on top of his blindness and inability to read as well.
But Rune had told Kalan the moment he took him as a padawan that there would be no regrets. And Rune wouldn’t go back on his word, not to Kalan. The Jedi Master had learned quickly to take everything in stride, and seem it simply as a challenge he had to get over for Kalan. The padawan would be stronger for every challenge they were able to defeat.
“Silly isn’t it? This fear.”
“No Kalan, it's not silly. Every fear is rational. Every being in the galaxy fears something for some reason. They don’t just fear things for the sake of fear. Even I have my own fears because of things that have happened before. You have to be able to accept your fear, but not act on it. You can’t let it hold you back or you’ll never get anywhere. Do you understand?”
Rune was kneeling down next to the boy at this point. He felt it more effective to teach him by getting down on his level.
“Now help me put the power packs back into the crate. And then put your robe on, it’s raining hard outside.”
The Master and Padawan finished stacking the power packs back in the crate and Rune resealed the lid. It would be like nothing ever happened. They walked to the landing ramp, which Rune had lowered before shutting the ship down. A heavy rain was an understatement now. It had brewed into a full thunderstorm. Perhaps one of the worst Rune had ever seen, which was saying a lot.
“Kalan, stay here where it is dry for the time being. I’ll go talk to the Jedi waiting for us at the bottom.”
The Mon Calamari swung his duffel bag around his neck and over his shoulder, leaving his hands free to do anything he would need two hands for. He raised the hood on his poncho as he descended the ramp. The Jedi waiting for them could only be a few years older than Kalan, perhaps assigned by his Master or the leader of the Enclave to greet Rune and Kalan when they landed. There was no one else on the landing pad by now; the storm had scared everyone else away. The Jedi was a tall, skinny green twi’lek with a blue tinted lightsaber hanging at his belt. He was drenched to the bone.
“Hello Master, my name is Padawan Bonaron. I have been instructed to show you and your padawan will you will be staying.”
The Twi’lek greeted Rune and bowed when he spoken. Rune replied with a small nod of his head, the most he could muster up with his bag and his poncho.
“Must’ve been important to you Padawan, if you stayed out in this weather. I appreciate it. Come on Kalan, this kind Padawan is going to show us the way to our dorms.”

“Now help me put the power packs back into the crate. And then put your robe on, it’s raining hard outside.”
Kalan silently obeyed his master, he felt a little guilty for having made such a mess, but he understood that Master Oki did not seem upset, but more concerned with his behaviour. Kalan wanted to explain it to him, how he felt but he was not sure he could. Kalan had heard what Rune had to say about fear, about not letting it control him, the problem was Kalan had allowed his fear large open spaces that his senses could not reach from one end to the other of, to control him. He felt a little ashamed of that fact. Kalan was worried, Master Oki had made a mistake picking such a difficult Padawan as himself, but he also believed that anything Master Oki set out to undertake he would see through.
Kalan shrugged on his slightly oversized outer robe, and pulled on his boots. Kalan generally preferred to walk barefoot when he could but this was clearly not the weather for it. The small Miralukan, stepped down the ramp way, but stopped before stepping from underneath the cover of the ship’s hull. He could hear the rain all around them, and he could detect the difference between it hitting the sodden ground, it hitting the ship, and hitting another person, standing near the ship.
“Kalan, stay here where it is dry for the time being. I’ll go talk to the Jedi waiting for us at the bottom.”
Kalan nodded and watched him go, he heard him having a hurried conversation, with a Padawan, and from the sound of his voice he was a Padawan not much older than Kalan. Kalan shivered, though not with the cold, he felt the space of the area surrounding the landing pad, it was not as bad as he felt on the ship but some of the same slightly sick feeling he had felt came over him. He wrapped the loose and baggy robe around himself and pulled the hood over his head, which was so big it almost obscured his face.
“Must’ve been important to you Padawan, if you stayed out in this weather. I appreciate it. Come on Kalan, this kind Padawan is going to show us the way to our dorms.”
He heard his Master was calling him, so he tentatively steeped off the ramp. The Padawan, who he now realised was a Twi’lek by the impression he made in the force, and his master started walking towards what Kalan assumed was the JedI Enclave. He felt nervous and apprehensive in the open. He kept very close to his Master’s side feeling a little safer but he was still sweating as the rain drenched his robe.
“Is it always this….wet?” He asked in a small voice.

Rune laughed at Kalan's question. The Mon Calamari forgot what it was like to be a kid, or to be training a young padawan. Always the simple questions, nothing to complicated. As long as they knew, they didn't need to know why it was like that.
No, Mustafar wasn't always like this. This was horrid weather. The wind from the storm whipped the ends of Rune's poncho around with such force. Despite the hooded poncho, Rune was still wet. Thunder rolled in the sky and lighting flashed, giving off some light on the landing pad.
“No, it's not always like this. If you wanted wet Kalan, we should've gone to Mon Calamari. It's a shame...”
Rune didn't finish the sentence. The loss of Dac still weighted heavy in his heart. It had been a year since it was invaded and taken over by the Sith in the War. The Jedi Council had chosen to stay out of the War, but being the Watchman of Dac, Rune had no choice but to fight, if only for his life. Despite the time, some wounds never healed. Rune felt it was a personal failure of his when Dac fell.
Rune and Kalan ran from the landing ramp into the Enclave, following the twi'lek padawan who had greeted them and open the door for them. They entered what looked like a hangar bay for the Enclave. There were two Aurek starfighters parked in the far end, opposite of where the two Jedi entered. In the middle of the hangar was a Chela fighter. Other than that, droids and other supplies and hoses littered the area.
Rune followed the young twi'lek through the hangar. They walked down a brightly lit hallway with red carpet and brown walls. Their were doors on either side, which lead into large rooms. Sounds of battle and training came from each room.
“These are our training rooms, each are the standard size of the training rooms on Coruscant, with one large room for Jedi to train together. Or alone if they want a challenge. Each room is equipped with holograms so you can train alone if you wish.”
The Jedi walked on, taking a left at the end. They entered a similar hallway, but with more doors. There were Jedi littered around in this hallway, either coming or going, or just standing around talking. There seemed to by only older Jedi and young padawans here though.
“Here is the quarters for Jedi Masters and their padawans. The padawan's quarters are on the right and the Master's on the left. You two will be directly across from each other. These two are for Master, and your padawan. Let me know if you need anything else.”
Rune kept walking with the twi'lek to the end of the hallway, stopping at the last pair of doors. He ignored the stares from his peers in the hallway, they were just obviously looking at the newcomers to the Enclave. The twi'lek took off towards the hangar bay again, leaving the two alone in the hallway.
Rune opened his door and looked in. The Mon Calamari would've sworn he was on Coruscant had he not piloted the shuttle himself. They were an exact copy of what he had back at the main Jedi Temple. There was all the furniture he needed. A bed, a desk, bookshelf, and a dresser. A large window with curtains looked out over the mountains, and at the storm still raging outside.
“Well Kalan, first impressions?”

No, it's not always like this. If you wanted wet Kalan, we should've gone to Mon Calamari. It's a shame...”
Kalan looked up at him for a moment, he looked sad. Kalan did not need any force powers to see that. He descided it was best to keep quite and leave his master to his own private thoughts. After all what business was it of Kalan’s, he was curious but had no right to know or to pry so he did not.
He followed the Master and the Padawan as they were shown around. Kalan knew he should be listening but the voice of the padawan washed over him, he wondered about in a daze half asleep. One thing his tired brain did note, was that there were less people her than on Courscant, the Enclave was smaller and emptier. It felt more comfortable than the wide open spaces of the Temple on Courscant..
When they stopped before their new quarters, Kalan was more alert and shifted his feet nervously they seemed to be the centre of attention as various ranks of JedI stared at them.
“Well Kalan, first impressions?” Kalan jumped a little, when Rune spoke to him, as he had been so preoccupied with the people in the hallway. He looked around the Master’s room “It is very nice" he said, in a non-committal way with a slight shrug of his shoulders. He wandered across the hall and opened the door to the room that would be his own, he dropped the bag on the floor and looked round it. It was much the same a small desk stood in the corner and there was a comfy bed along one wall. He looked very uncomfortable in his new surroundings. He then slowly looked under the bed and then slid into the narrow space. He twisted a little bit one way then the other, he wrapped his robe tight round himself , then a broad smile crossed his face like a sunrise. “It is perfect!” He said from under the bed.

Later That Day
The rain had finally stopped. The storm had lasted for quite a while, but once it did finally cease, Rune had decided it would be a good idea to get out of the Enclave. So they went on a hike in the forest that was located close to the Enclave.
The storm had left quite a bit of humidity in the air, which felt great against Rune's skin. There were several puddles on the path Rune had to decided to take, which took them deep into the forest. In the parts of the path that dipped down, there was quite a bit of mud.
Despite the state of the forest, Rune was feeling great. The sun was out, there was nice humidity, and he wasn't sitting behind the controls of a shuttle for the first time in a couple of days. It was nice to stretch his legs. Rune took a quick pace, practically a jog, through the forest. But he had to make sure Kalan was keeping up.
That was another reason he decided to go on this hike; because of Kalan. The boy had such a fear of open spaces. Rune had never seen anything like it, but it was something he was determined to help Kalan over. Rune had figured that the forest could be nice and open, but the trees would provide obstacles as well. So it was still a large space, but not completely open.
Not losing pace, Rune slide over a fallen log that laid across the path, most likely knocked down this morning. Their path was starting to take them up uphill, but they were still deep in the forest. It was a lovely place in Rune's opinion. He stopped and looked around though, checking to make sure Kalan was still with him.

Kalan was a little more comfortable than he had thought he would be. When his Master announced they were going for a hike, Kalan had felt his heart settle in the pit of his stomach. He had been shaking when they had got outside, the vast sky above their heads and the constant infernal rain. However, now they were in the forest, he felt a good deal calmer. The Green canopy of leaves was like a vaulted roof over his head. The trickle of rain that made it past the leaves of the trees was longer oppressive imposition but a soft cooling caress. Best of all the forest was alive.
His force sight saw the forest as a shimmering wide array of colours all over the top of the faint blue background of the planet. This forest was a good place, Kalan felt it somehow. It was relatively easy to avoid all of the trees and other obstacles in the forest, the only problem Kalan had here was the punishing pace set by his Master.
Kalan was not unfit work down the mines and Jedi training had seen to that, but in the end he was far smaller than Master Oki, having to take three or four steps to his Master's long stride. Kalan was starting to feel the tightness in his hamstrings and calves and a dull ache on the soles of his feet. Kalan saw his Master pause and look over his shoulder a few times to see if Kalan was keeping up. Kalan squared his jaw and pressed on, there is no way he could or would ever admit to being tired to his Master. He was determined in all things to impress his Master as much as possible to show he had made the correct choice in selecting Kalan as his Padawan. Perhaps this was more for his own sake than his Master's but he was determined to do it none the less.
Kalan saw his Master slide over a tree log, almost vaulting over it not seeming to loose a step on the other side. Kalan paused for a moment the log seemed much bigger to Kalan his force sight tracing it' surface. Kalan took a small run up and attempted to slide over it. It ended up as more of a desperate scrabble as he hauled himself over the top and dropped down on the other side. He saw his Master waiting and attempted to jog to his side but felt a force holding him back. He turned the bottom of his robe was caught on the log. He gave a a sharp pull, the robe detached and he fell over backwards. Seeing his Master looking back at him his face flushed and he stood up dusted himself off and tried to walk off as if nothing had happened. He gave a nervous smile and laugh to his Master.

Rune hadn't anticipated Kalan having trouble getting over the log in the middle of the path. The boy scrabbled over the top and crawled over it. He came down the other side, and his robe became snagged on a limb. Rune was about to call out and warn him, but Kalan fell flat on his back before he could say anything.
Rune kept a straight face as Kalan gave a nervous laugh and came his way. Kalan almost hurting himself on the log was more Rune's fault than anything. He had been so used to working alone, or with an older padawan. He had long forgotten what having a youngster around was like. You had to take things slow. Still, maybe he could turn this into a lesson for Kalan.
“You didn't need to scramble over top of the log. You have tools, use them. What else could you have done?”
Rune always let Kalan come to his own conclusions before filling in himself. He thought it was the best way for the miraluka to learn. It let him think, instead of just listen. Many padawans, especially when younger, forgot most of their lessons. Rune thought this could prevent Kalan from forgetting.
He could point out a couple options for getting past the log just off the top of his head. He could use the force, cut the log in half with his saber, use the force to enhance his jump over it. Or, since they were in a team, there was always the option of asking for help.

“You didn't need to scramble over top of the log. You have tools, use them. What else could you have done?”
Kalan looked slightly apprehensive. His thoughts were blocked for a moment by sheer blind panic. "What else? What else?" the thought was running round in his brain. He toyed with the lightsaber for a moment, his hands running over the smooth cold metal. It felt dangerous and cold and the pressure would be on him to wield it. He looked up at his Master again for a moment. "I suppose I could have used the Force to jump over it."
He stepped back to the log, and summoning his inexperienced power over the force he leaped clumsily into the air and over the log. He turned and did the same again. The Move seemed a little shaky and clumsy, like everything Kalan did but it was at least effective. "I Hope that is the right answer Master." He then quickly change the subject for a moment "I love it here it feels so alive." He span in a slow circle taking in the vista in all directions.
"This is the first time I have enjoyed being on the outside. It is pretty comfy here the canopy is just like a roof." He took a deep lung full of sweet air and let it out again. Life as a Padawan was hard but it really was worth to get to be in places like this. It payed for all the hard work easily. For the first time in his life Kalan felt at ease.

Rune watched Kalan use the Force to jump over the log, and then back to their side. For his age, Rune thought he did well. He didn't fall over when he landed, and he got to where he needed to go. Who cared what it looked like?
“That was good. You could've also used your saber to cut it in half, or...”
Then Kalan started talking about the forest. Rune wasn't one for being interrupted, he was a very vocal person. Usually when it happened, he commanded the conversation and brought it back to his topic. But this was a different case.
It seemed Rune's idea about the forest really did work. Kalan enjoyed being outside, under the leafy canopy. He had figured that the boy would able to see all that was alive, and not beyond that. That he would get distracted.
Maybe now they could get to the bottom of this fear. After all, that was the real reason they were out here. Not for some log in the middle of the path. Rune offered Kalan a smile and then started to talk once the boy was finished.
“I hoped you might like it out here. Forests are one of the more interesting ecosystems in our galaxy. Just about everything but the dirt under your boot is alive. Go ahead, reach out and feel how far it can go.”
Rune pasued. He wanted Kalan to soak it all in. He wanted him to soak in the forest.
“This forest in particular actually cover a large area. Which is something I've noticed you have a... slight problem with. Care to explain?”
Unlike usual, Rune was very gentle with Kalan duirng this conversation. When he reached out, it wasn't an order or a command to explain why, but rather a question, which could be turned down if the boy so chose.
But sooner or later, it had to be dealt with.

“That was good. You could've also used your saber to cut it in half, or...”
Kalan quickly realised he had kept talking without stopping over the top of his Master. He looked sheepishly at Rune when he had finished and rang his hands in that unconscious way he did when he was nervous.
“Oh I am sorry Master, that was very rude of me I wasn't paying attention.”
“I hoped you might like it out here. Forests are one of the more interesting ecosystems in our galaxy. Just about everything but the dirt under your boot is alive. Go ahead, reach out and feel how far it can go.”
Kalan nodded and centered himself, trying to calm he took a deep breath, closing his eyes and stretched out. His immature senses traced the trees near by like soft fingers gently caressing along their bark, tracing the flow of the life and energy in them. Through from the Green canopy, down into the roots like the busiest thoroughfares on Coruscant. They ran for miles and miles like the forest ran for miles. Small animals and large animals lumbering and squeaking and fighting through life.
He opened his eyes again and looked at his Master, “It feels almost endless Master,” He said slightly breathlessly.
“This forest in particular actually cover a large area. Which is something I've noticed you have a... slight problem with. Care to explain?”
Kalan seemed suddenly surprised by the question, a slight strain of panic in his voice. He had been so calm to. Why was his Master asking this? Kalan thought he had already said enough on the subject and was not happy elaborating further. He also knew however, that his Master was tenacious and one time or another his Master would get his answer. It was painful to think about the past at all better to pretend it did not exist. However, he felt he had to say something if only to make the long silence disappear.
“I... I .. I wish I knew how to explain it to you properly Master.” A half truth but it would do for now. “When something is so broad and open, it... it... just feels wrong. Beyond my ability to see or control. If... if that makes sense?”
Kalan desperately wanted this conversation to end. His palms were becoming sweaty and he was thinking of that space, that space beyond the leaf canopy that vast empty nothing ready to gobble him up, like a monster from a child's story that he was told. He tried to calm himself but was struggling hard against a brain that was telling him to run, run and hide.
