Var's words were very blunt and honest, but didn't catch Bit off guard. He was expecting maybe more venom or fire behind her voice, but it was just strait and to the point. It was much better than beating around the bush.
The woman's green eyes locked with his brown ones, making it very clear that she wouldn't forget that day for a good long time. Bit didn't blame her in the least, but at least he wasn't exactly hated. Bit shook his head slowly, letting out a small breath.
No reminder needed.
Yup... no living that down
Bit went back to eating his steak, the atmosphere between them heavy, or at least the man thought so. We kept going through his steak and potatos in silence, having trouble thinking of what would be a good topic... Most everything else had been smothered out quickly, and he was running out of topics. He tried to say something, but it came out as awkward to his ears.
Sooo.... how was your life before becoming a swoop star?

Rather than try to argue that he'd changed or that he'd been misunderstood, the human man conceded the point without argument, which merited a thing and sardonic smile by Var. Her pale lips wore an expression that was rather smug.
Instead he promptly asked her about her life before her new-found celebrity, which was one of her taboo topics. That was largely because she hated having to come up with lies, and she couldn't very well disclose her full story to someone who could sell her out in an instant.
Var chewed on a breadstick as she mulled over the story she'd concocted as her background.
"I was born on Ryloth. My parents died very young and I stowed away on a ship to Tatooine to avoid being captured into slavery. Wound up a slave anyway. A passing stranger bought my freedom when I was young, and I did odd jobs for a while before meeting my friend Doneeda. Then we both came to Manaan. The rest you know."
The stew was rapidly disappearing, and Var dragged her spoon along the bottom of the bowl, pulling a bite of meat to her mouth and chewing it over as she avoided eye contact, hoping she was a convincing liar.
If she wasn't a good liar, it could wreck her life.

Never knew you were a slave... Sorry for bringing up old memories.
Bit looked down at what was left of his food, and began to finish his food. Sure, he said sorry, but the woman's life was missing a huge chunk of life. She was avoiding saying something, and it didn't take someone with good attention to detail to know that.
Well, maybe it did. She probably didn't remember much when she was a slave, if she said some stranger brought her when she was young, but young was a very blanket term, and she could have been any age, and could have little trouble recollecting her memories from that age.
What caught on him next was the 'odd jobs for a while' part. This woman was young, but not to the point where she could have been working for 'a while.' Years and years were missing, but if this woman didn't wish to disclose that information, so be it.
Seems legit. Glad you found your calling rather than living from job to job.
Bit smiled slightly, then finished off his steak and potato's, savoring the flavor of both. His last few bites was a combination of both items on his plate. When he was finished, he washed it all down with his water, which quickly disappeared, minus the ice.

Var shrugged. This wasn't exactly bringing up her most vivid memories, or if it was she couldn't say it was bothering her. The trouble always seemed to come at night, or when she was alone. It was when there was not another soul around that she really and truly delved into her past.
As much as she'd always hated people, she hated being alone worse still.
Awkward existence to be trapped between the extremes of detesting contact and detesting the places her mind strayed to in the solitary hours. It was all a part of her effort to adjust to a normal life, which wasn't easy.
At least she wasn't especially evil now. By and large she tried to do nice things, even if her life was a lie she played by the rules, more or less. And it wasn't as if she didn't have friends. There was Donnie. And Blazinda. And Eleanor.
But that was it.
Var was glad she'd found her calling too though, otherwise she might have wandered for years and not found what was right for her. Hell, if not for the threat of prison she might have tried rejoining the Jedi.
This was for the best though, that past was closed to her. It was a path she'd strayed too far from to come back along.
The pale Twi'lek woman finished off her stew and dabbed the corners of her mouth with the napkin, gloved hands placing it over the bowl she was done with.
Her glance shifted from Bit to the ocean view out the window again, and she promised herself a new apartment with a view just like that. She didn't care how much the rent cost, not anymore.

Bit had his eyes shut as Var shifted her field of view to the window. His thoughts reclaimed their clarity, rather than being mixed up as they had been. A few moments passed before his pocket, more specifically, his data-pad, vibrated.
Upon taking it out of his pocket, he saw he had a message, being routed to him through the fighter. Apparently, it was finished with its work, which was sooner than Bit expected, but it would be fine. He closed his eyes again, taking out a credit chip to pay for his and Var's meals.
We'll need to take a rain check on that fighter flight... Things came up that I need to attend.

Bit excused himself, and paid for the meal. Var didn't protest on either count.
She was ambivalent about the man. On the one hand, he seemed nice enough now. But on the other, she wasn't about to forget their first encounter. She couldn't quite reconcile the two.
Var did have a good idea what he wanted, that he was interested in her. However she could safely say she didn't share that interest. She was picky, she was hard to please. Eleanor was the only real companionship she had besides Donnie, and perhaps Blazinda.
The pale Twi'lek didn't get out much.
"That's fine," She said finally as she tossed her napkin onto the table, rising from the seat she had been resting in, stretching.
"Good luck with your... mission."
Var turned and walked out of the restaurant, heading back to the swoop track to see if her time was still good enough. Even if you couldn't win every race, you had to try.
