“Oh wow!”
“Look!”
“It’s bigger than the Temple back home!”
The exclamations was followed by a stampede of small feet and over 20 young voices talking over one another as Jedi Knight Chias Nero and her class of younglings emerged from the forest pathway saw and the ruins of the original Jedi Archive.
The main structure of dark brown stone overgrown with vegetation only one of the two massive frontal towers stood the second shattered and broken like an old bone as the third and fourth could be seen a mile away.
In the main courtyard the main camp for the joint excavation between both the Order and Republic could be seen. Transport vehicles for troops and personnel, tents and research buildings made a large semi circle in front of the Temple’s main entrance.
The Echani smiled as she watched the children’s reaction to seeing something they had only read or seen in holo vids back at the Temple on Courscant. This trip to the Jedi home world was her final lesson to her students and for her it was a bittersweet journey.
Once they returned to the Republic capital the younglings would then go to their advanced classes with new instructors and lessons, leaving the young Historian to prepare for entirely new class and putting those memories in the ever expanding archive in her mind.
She moved up to the front of the group, feeling the millennia old stone of the courtyard as the grass which grew in between the stones tickled the bare heels of her feet as she turned slowly to face them as her white gown and robes fluttered as she held up a pale hand as the younglings quieted down.
“Welcome to the Archive younglings.” She said, looking to the ancient structure “Here is where the first Jedi Knights came to find their connection with the Force and where our most cherished traditions and customs were recorded.”
She was quiet for a time, letting the site and her words sink in before continuing. “Always remember…no matter how far the Jedi have come, no matter where we have traveled.” She said “The discoveries made or battles won. Always remember that we began here.”
She looked back to the children looking into their eyes and smiling “And always know that you are apart of a great legacy that shall keep the peace, defend the weak, fight darkness and explore the stars for millennia to come.”
With that she led the class to the camp’s main entrance, guarded by two Republic troopers. The one on the left seeing their approach and walked up to them as she removed her helmet and smile revealing the dark green skin and black tattoos of the Mirialans, resting the large rifle on her shoulder.
Lieutenant Nalia Vassa gave a nod and smile and Chias returned with a curtsey like bow of her gown. “Master Jedi.” She said “Good to see you again.”
“Lieutenant.” Chias said with a smile “A pleasure as always. The Archive has been quiet I trust?”
“It’s a ruin ma’am.” The solider said with a smirk “It’s always quiet, suits me just fine.”
She glanced over Chias’ shoulder to the children giving the Echani a subtle wink before speaking “But I could’ve sworn I could hear someone talking in the East corridor just before chow last night…went to check it out….and nobody was there!”
“Like a ghost?!?!” one of the younglings exclaimed
“Maybe…” Vassa said with a shrug “Good thing we have a whole bunch of Jedi to check it out because I’m just to scared.” They children looked at her with wide eyes then began to whispering amongst themselves.
Chias gave the soldier a smirk with a playful scold look in her eye as she spoke “We shall we be exploring the East Archive. I trust your Commander was sent word?”
“Yes ma’am.” Vassa said “Checked the chambers with a squad myself. Found a nest of Horranth but they were pretty easy to clean out.”
“Perhaps you should accompany us then.” Chias said “You can tell if they returned and help me deal with them...or the ghosts if need be…..”
Vassa thought for a second and then nodded “I’ll have to clear it and find a replacement but it shouldn’t be a problem.” She said “You go onahead and I’ll meet you there…follow the green path way lights and should lead you right to the entrance.”
With that Vassa departed and Chias lead the class through the encampment into the Temple, the group taking in the sight of the ancient entrance hall. Shattered stairways that lead upward was before them.
Chias looked and saw a path lit by green lamps embedded in the ground went to down a long corridor to the left of the stairs and similar path lit with red lights went to the right. Massive pillars could be seen as streams of sunlight could be seen through holes of varying size in the roofs.
The group arrived at the massive door just as Vassa was catching up to them. The Jedi and trooper opening the doors as the children waited outside as Vassa and Chias performed a sweep of the lobby and first few study areas…finding nothing.
Chias lead the children in, speaking as they took the massive space “This is the Archive.” She said “Many of the original Jedi Knights and Masters wrote their first journals and recorded first holo journals here.”
“Could they still be here Master Chias?” a young female human asked
“Over the centuries many of the artifacts of Tython have been taken back to Courscant or looted by treasure hunters.” Chias said “But this is one of five known Archives in this ruin. And two of those five are still sealed…so it is possible.”
After an hour long lecture of how ancient Jedi transcribed their journals and a lesson of the founding of the original High Council, the children were allowed explore the Archive with their assigned partners.
Chias answered whatever questions they had and Vassa accompanied any group or pair that the young Jedi could go with herself in case was any wild life nesting in any of the lecture halls or study rooms.
Two hours later the group was preparing to return back to the main colony as children gathered in the main hall. Chias counted heads as she felt a small tug on her gown, looking down as she saw the Wookie student, a confused and scared looked on his furry features.
Chias cocked her head slightly “Farn…” she said “Where is Malli? It is time to go.”
The Wookie roared and pointed toward the East section. Chias who did not know Wookie dialect looked to Vassa who had been stationed on Kashyyyk and knew Shyriiwook.
“Can you translate?' she asked a bit uncomfortable “There is usually a translator droid back at the colony or Temple…”
Vassa nodded and listened as the Wookie roared “He said that his friend was too scared to come back with him.” She looking to Chias with a concerned stare “Told him that the ghost might follow them…”
“I see…” she said, her voice calm but her face troubled as she looked to Vassa “Please stay with the children lieutenant. I shall return shortly.”
She climbed the East stairs and made her way until arriving at a darkened library with tall book shelves that went on and on into the darkness until nothing could be seen. There stood Talli, the young human girl holding the hilt of her youngling saber but not ignited.
“Not that it would matter.” Chias thought as she approached, her bare feet padding silently “It is just a mere practice saber.”
She knelt down on one knee next to the girl who did not even turn to look at her. The young grey eyes were locked onto the darkness, as if looking away would unleash the hidden horror. Chias felt her small form shivering as he touched her shoulder.
“Talli…” Chias soothingly trying to get her attention “The others are waiting…what is wrong?”
“S-so—something is in there Master Chias.” Talli said, glancing at the Echani quickly at then back to the shadows. “Can’t you sense it?”
Chias looked to the shadows and then focused her mind, using the Force stretch outward into the darkness until she sensed another presence.
Despite connecting with the being, it confused Chias immensely. At first she felt the ever present and familiar warmth of those who allied themselves with the Light Side of the Force…the Jedi. And without warning it turned ice cold and dark…to The Dark Side…to the Sith. Back and forth the aura would go, light to dark, warmth to cold….Jedi to Sith.
Chias bit her bottom lip and then turned to Talli to look at her. “Everything is fine young one.” Chias said, giving her best smile “Go back to Lieutenant Vassa and have her take you all outside. Make sure to tell her to close the entrance hall off please.”
Talli glanced to the shadows and back to Chias “But Master---“
“Tell her Talli.” Her voice soft but firm as she unclipped her saber hilt. “It will be all right. Go.”
Chias watched her move off, looking over her shoulder every so often until she was gone. Her ice blue eyes settle onto the blackness as she moved to kneel on her legs as she rested her saber hilt in her lap bringing her white hood over head.
“Please show yourself.” She said her voice still and composed “I would much rather talk face to face ….”
“Look!”
“It’s bigger than the Temple back home!”
