Appearance • The Vestigo-class is a family of long, slender science vessels commisioned for the Galactic Republic. They boast sleek, refined exteriors, backended by a quintent of powerful sublight thrusters that, at full power, afford impressive acceleration. The layout within a Vestigo depends on the use of the ships; there are several base designs for varying science missions that allow them to serve roles ranging mobile research stations to engaging on deep-space expeditions into uncharted territory. A significant amount of room is taken up by the ship's powerful generators.
Function
The Vestigo family is designed from the ground up to serve the Republic's science community, and their amenities suit that function perfectly. Though the uses vary, the crown of each ship is the very potent power generator, which can serve as a power source for intense onboard experiments, or, for models geared toward deep space exploration, power a state-of-the-art hyperdrive system, which features a Class 2 main drive and a Class 5 backup. The vessels geared toward exploration boast a powerful shielding array and communications suite and capabilities that rival some of the Republic military's finest ships. While the ships are, generally, unarmed, vessels engaging on long trips into uncharted territory may be retrofitted with a single light turbolaser and a trio of laser canons. These armaments are more suited toward breaking up asteroids or fending off hostile wildlife than engaging in naval combat; were the ships to come under hostile fire, they'd be more suited to relying on their shields and using their powerful engines to escape the enemy.
The ships' interiors are generally modular and can be altered to fit their undertakings. They come standard with ample laboratory space and can be designed to hold more. A standard ship can hold hundreds of scientists and support staff, in addition to the ship's crew. Ships geared for long-term expeditions boast increased life support functionality, a fully-functional onboard medical facility, extensive onboard water and atmospheric recycling capabilities, and storage space to carry supplies to last years in deep space without resupplying.
