Trial Set To Begin Amidst Extradition Demands
The Galactic Court on Prazhi has set an official date for the trial of Captain Jefera Smarcan and her co-conspirators, the Republic captains responsible for the attack on Imperial ships during the Battle of Nar Shaddaa.
Following the Republic's refusal to turn over the accused immediately following the incident, Empress Renata invoked the Arbitration Clause of the Treaty of Prazhi, to which Chancellor Vrieska agreed. The Arbitration Clause dictates that in the event of an irreconcilable dispute between the two superpowers, both sides can agree to turn over the issue to the Court. The Treaty of Prazhi established the Galactic Court to oversee diplomatic and legal disputes when needed. The Court has full authority to rule on issues brought before it, with the Republic and the Empire expected to abide by its decision.
This marks the first instance of the Arbitration Clause’s use since the end of the war between the Galactic Republic and the Sith Empire.
The Court is expected to rule on the accused officers’ guilt and, crucially, whether they will remain in Republic custody or given over to the Empire.
The trial will include arguments from political and military leadership from both nations. Fine details are unclear but there is speculation that the Empress and Chancellor themselves could become involved. What is certain is that many senators and aristocrats will be attending, both in shows of protest and support.
