Ijaat-class Frigate Frigate designed for boarding actions Name • Ijaat-class Frigate; translated to 'Honor'-class in Basic Classification • Ship; specifically a frigate Origin • Clan Ordo; available to most Mandalorians in limited numbers
Specifications Size • - Height: 100m (approx.) - Width: 120m (approx. widest) - Length: 325m (approx.) Appearance •
The Ijaat-class has a rather interesting design to it, looking like a cross between a drop ship and some kind of specialized missile destroyer from afar. In reality, it's design is adopted from Republic and Sith ship wreckage found on Taris, specifically the escape pod systems, giving the ship a very disjointed feel. Some parts are very clearly synthesized from Republic designs, others more commercial ship designs, others very clearly Sith as the designers of Clan Ordo pursued modularity and ease of repair voraciously. Each of the three bays per side holds up to ten pods and the ship features nine tri-heavy laser cannon arrays on the top, with two single barrel variants on the front. Although the picture depicts the vessel in black, this black paint generally begins to burn off as the ship travels through hyperspace, revealing the bare durasteel beneath.
Function
Due to the relatively young ship construction capabilities of Ordo, the Ijaat-class is both considered a test and a stopgap as the planet ramps up production. With no real need or desire to construct massive capital ships, this vessel is designed to fill a lot of roles that such ships play at once with a relatively small frame and good maneuvering capabilities; generally paired with the Gra'tua-class Destroyer vessel also produced on Ordo.
The most striking thing about the Ijaat-class are the six pod bays arrayed on the sides of the vessel, each one developed from the remains of escape pod systems found on a number of ruined capital ships found on the surface of Taris. These pod bays are specifically designed to fire their pods at an enemy ship when it's shields have been depleted, using a high powered fusion cutter on the front of each to punch through the thick durasteel hulls of Republic or Sith capital-class vessels. Each bay holds up to ten pods.
These pods have limited steering capabilities like regular escape pods in order to let them be picked up by the ship's tractor beam if they miss their targets or need course correction during launch. Each one carries a squad of up to four Mandalorian warriors, strapped into harnesses on the sides of the pod plus one in the pilot's seat; usually the squad leader. In order to survive high velocity impacts, each pod is plated both with thick durasteel and also heat shielding to allow for orbital drop capabilities; designed in such a way as to absorb as much of the impact as possible while landing and then be opened either at the front or either side of the craft. Each pod also comes equipped with a hand-held fusion cutter in case all of the entrances become blocked with starship debris.
Due to these pods, hanger space on the craft is generally limited to a few shuttles and fighters (usually one shuttle per side, plus 3-4 starfighters or 2 Basilisk War Droids); however each pod bay can be removed to increase hanger space, giving the Ijaat-class roles as both a small fighter or bomber carrier and as a boarding vessel as originally intended.
As a ship, the Ijaat-class is small and fairly maneuverable due to a strong engine and thrusters developed from a scaled up version of the Basilisk War Droid's but suffers from a lack of armament. While the nine tri-heavy cannon arrays may seem impressive, they are designed to hammer at a ship's shields and tend to do little to capital-class hulls unless directed specifically at vital systems. In a straight up firefight, it relies a lot on it's paired vessel, the Gra'tua-class or on bomber squadrons.
Where it does excel is it's shielding and hull integrity, however. Due to the modular nature of it's components, the super structure of the ship is designed to be very rigid and difficult to break, even under fire from a larger vessel. It's shielding is developed from reverse-engineering those found on Republic cruisers, able to withstand a great deal of punishment so long as the power spikes can be managed. Those power spikes are the biggest issue plaguing the ship; while the engine is a very impressive piece of engineering it tends to suffer from power fluctuations that make it difficult for computer systems to keep control, generating massive amounts of heat and requiring vast quantities of coolant. This is an ongoing problem that the engineers at Clan Ordo are attempting to rectify for their next designs but for now, it is something that crews will simply need to deal with.
As for it's hyperdrive, it can be considered rather mid-range for a vessel of this size, generally considered about a Class 5; though hyperdrive speed was not considered a priority in development, as these vessels were not meant to be travelling great distances across the galaxy, instead patrolling the edges of Mandalorian Space or performing hunts on neighboring worlds.
