Gra'tua-class Frigate Destroyer designed for breaking shields. Name • Gra'tua-class Frigate; translated to 'Vengeance'-class in Basic Classification • Ship; specifically a destroyer Origin • Clan Ordo; available to most Mandalorians in limited numbers
Specifications Size • - Height: 90m (approx.) - Width: 100m (approx. widest) - Length: 285m (approx.) Appearance •
Designed in a similar fashion to it's sister ship, the Ijaat-class Frigate, the Gra'tua-class is a stop-gap design constructed from reverse-engineered Republic and Sith battleships and it certainly looks that way. Modularity was favored here rather than purpose, so that the frame of the Gra'tua could be outfited with different modules to fit different situations. The ship features six fixed-angle tri-barrel turbolasers (three per side), as well as one swivel-mounted tri-barrel turbolaser and two swivel-mounted single-barrel turbolasers at the front of the craft. This is in addition to ten high-powered beam cannons (five per side) and multiple point-defense guns on the nose. While the picture shows the Gra'tua-class in blank, the paint is usually stripped during hyperspace travel and rarely re-painted.
Function
The Gra'tua-class is built for one specific purpose, to hammer down the shields of much larger vessels and if needed do as much damage to their superstructure as possible. Clan Ordo developed this design to be paired with it's sister ship, the Ijaat-class Frigate, which is used for boarding actions but requires the enemy ships shields be lowered first. As mentioned before though, the Gra'tua-class is by no means a perfect design and has a significant amount of flaws but is effective enough to use as a stop-gap until a better design is settled on.
Destroyers generally have the prime directive of 'more weaponry' and the Gra'tua-class is no exception. The seven tri-barrel turbolaser arrays are enough to put significant dents in any similar-sized ship but where it really shines are it's ten beam cannons. By themselves these would be little more than anti-fighter cannons but given a significant (some would say unsafe) power boost and arrayed with four others per side, these beam cannons wreak havoc on an enemy ship's shields. Through continuous blasting, the beam cannons' primary purpose is to overload the shield's heat sinks and cause a critical meltdown, paving the way for the turbolasers to cripple the ship's weaponry and engines.
Of course, such a huge amount of power doesn't come without cost. As the engine is created from a significantly scaled-up version of that found on the Basilisk War Droid, it tends to generate massive amounts of heat by itself. As such, if the ship wants to fire it's weapons it has to remain stationary and allow the heat sinks to cool before they can start moving again. Depending on how long the beam cannons have been in use, this can take anywhere from a few minutes to 30, meaning that when a Gra'tua-class commits to attacking a craft, there is little chance of escape if things go poorly.
The point-defense guns and single-barrel turbolasers on the nose of the craft are generally used to defend against fighters and batter smaller ships out of the way with brute force, most often employed against fleeing craft to disable engines and allow them to swing around to the side to bring their full firepower to bear.
As with it's sister ship, the Ijaat-class, this ship has six module bays (three per side) for the purpose of outfitting the ship for various situations. Two of these modules are usually reserved for hangers to carry fighters and bombers, each one able to hold up to 12 fighters/bombers and one larger ship, with a Basilisk War Droid taking the space of two fighters/bombers. The other four can also be fitted with hanger modules with the same capacity but usually are outfitted either with the same boarding modules as the Ijaat-class (however each module can only hold five pods instead of ten) or further tri-barrel turbo-laser arrays (two per module). Fully outfitted for maximum firepower, the Gra'tua-class is capable of supporting 19 tri-barrel turbolaser arrays (12 in modules, 7 built-in), though this is very rarely done.
Generally this ship is fairly maneuverable, though certainly not as much as the Ijaat-class. It can surpass the speed of most capital ships easily, as it's supposed to, though may struggle to catch ships of similar size. The fact that it has to stop to fire it's main weapons is considered it's most critical flaw and a significant amount of work is being done to try and develop a better heat sink solution. The shields on the Gra'tua-class could be considered rather average, usually enough time to shut down the opposing ship's shields but if caught on unfavorable ground, the Gra'tua-class could destroyed fairly quickly by larger ships.
In terms of hyperdrive, it boasts the same hyperdrive as it's sister ship at around a class 5, though once again these ships are designed to maneuver around Mandalorian Space, not go riding around the galaxy. It also sports enough escape pods for the 500+ man crew, if only barely, located on the underside of the ship.
