The Story Behind Bespin:
Bespin is a gas giant in the outer rim, along the Perlemian Trade route. The planet’s gas atmosphere is mostly inhostpitable, but there does exist a small band of atmosphere, thirty kilometers wide, whose oxgen-rich make-up has given the name “Life Zone”. Despite the lack of actual ground, many cities have arisen on Bespin, the largest of which, Cloud city, comprises most of the planet’s traffic.
Cloud city itself is first and foremost a mining colony for the all-too-necessary gas Tibanna (Used in all manner of blaster technology), but is secondly the largest luxury resort for three parsecs, complete with hotels and casinos. The population of Cloud city is near four million people, whereas only about 4.6 million people live on Bespin in total, meaning that the story of Cloud city is the story of Bespin itself.
With such a rich clientele and necessary resource as Bespin has to offer, the planet is often visited by persons of less-than noble ends. Many sith aristocrats frequent the planet, as do several other unsavory characters (They have an entire floor designed with “Hutt-sized” doors). In the recent wake of the Rim Wars, Bespin has had its loyalties tested between the Republic who protects them and the sith who supply them. They have chosen neutrality, cutting the Republic forces off of their Hyperspace Beacon, and taking care of themselves. They have even begun to pressure the Jedi of the nearby floating Enclave to leave their planet. At this point, the price of Tibanna gas has sky-rocketed and many other groups are trying to find away around what is being called the “Bespin Embargo”
