Infancy- Young Child
Years before the birth of Mayla Sorto, a young man known as Zeka Sorto had heard of the birth of his first child, a boy named Mikel. Zeka lived on the outskirts of Mirial. He was uneducated, poor and unknown in his community. He had always sought a better life for himself, and now that he had a son he demanded a better life for his family. He scraped up the money he had, and headed to Coruscant with his family and the few belongings they had. Generation after generation, the Sorto family lost a bit of their Mirialan culture, and acquired a sense of city life.
Zeka was the great grandfather of Mayla Sorto. Shortly after his death, Zeka’s son Mikel had his first child, a boy named Zeka II. When Zeka II was around the age of thirty, his wife, Solia, birthed a girl named Mayla. The Sorto’s had since earned some money and were somewhat intellectual.
At the time of Mayla’s birth, Zeka II was enrolled in the army of the Republic. Although he had yet to be actually stationed, his name was on the enrollment list and he had to be ready to leave at any time. Solia had worked in a small shop on the outskirts of the town, but quit to take care of Mayla.
Naturally, Mayla and her mother developed a deep relationship. Since her first “blahs” and “goos”, Solia was able to understand her daughter’s emotions, wants and most importantly needs. In this sense, Mayla was always at a satisfactory feeling at least. Her mother called her, “my little smiley face”, as Mayla was constantly wearing a giant grin.
Around the age of 20 months, Mayla spoke her first understandable word. It was no. This started the rebellious toddler known as Mayla. To her, everything was “mine” and tantrums were constant. In one instance she fell onto the streets and pounded the thick road on a routine shopping trip. Of course, it was a mere stage, but her mom grew more and more tired.
When Mayla was 3, Zeka II was finally stationed with the Republic Army on a base on Naboo. He was allowed to bring his family, and discussed the matter with Solia. In the end, the conditions were crowded, and they would have more freedom on Courscant. And so, Zeka II left his family behind and headed to Naboo.
However, with Zeka gone, Solia endured more stress. Money was sent weekly, however, it seemed to be a bit short, as a part of it was needed for living materials on Naboo for Zeka. Solia hired a human babysitter, and picked up her old job at a local shop. But it seemed stress continued to pile on Solia. Eventually, she could not handle Mayla, and sent her to a local boarding school.
Schooling Years
Mayla went through a few weeks of depression, but was able to get through it thanks to a few friends at the school. Specifically, a human named Sraissa Mari, who was dumped in the boarding school due to abusive parents. The two girls got along very well, rooming together, and playing numerous games with each other.
As for the school part of Mayla’s life, her grades were fairly well. She received B’s in most subjects, but rose above expectations in English, with A’s and the occasional A+.
In the end, she lived a happy life in the boarding school. Her mom never came to visit, as if she forgot about her only child, but Mayla was occupied with other things: friends and school. She never really dealt with bullies, and was well liked amongst her classmates.
At the age of 12, tragedy struck Mayla’s life. She received a letter that her dad had died while in service. The last Mayla had heard her father was living a peaceful life on Naboo. However, he was re-stationed to Nar Shadda to escort a group of Senators to various meetings and such. He was shot down by a bounty hunter who had mistaken him for someone else. His body was burned on site, and a service was held for him.
None the less, Mayla was both sad and angry. She barely knew her father, but felt a pit form in her stomach when she heard the news of his passing. She questioned the fact that her family wasn’t given rights to her father’s body, and that they merely acknowledged his work and moved on. A barrier between her and the Republic was formed at that moment, and it would take much internal thought to overcome it.
Yet again, Mayla turned to her friends and schoolwork from distraction of the tragedy, and soon enough all was forgotten.
The boarding school Mayla was attending went through high school, and so Mayla remained there through her high school years.
At the age of 16, Mayla’s attitude and hard work earned her a spot on student council. She was proud and somewhat surprised of her popularity amongst her classmates. She had always looked at herself humbly, and never saw her peers recognizing her like that.
Her first few months on the council flew by quietly. However, she did eventually speak up when the council sought to shorten school days by 10 minutes. Although many students seemed to like the idea, she believed that 10 minute was valuable learning time, and that professors needed as much time as they could have to ensure their student’s were successful. She eventually won the debate, and school days remained the same amount of time. Mayla’s actions improved her popularity amongst teachers, as she stood up for their teaching time.
Mayla kept her B’s and A’s running through the end of high school. She graduated with Sraissa by her side, and was ready to head off the college. He professor’s recommendations got her a recommendation at the University of Coruscant. She was set to major in psychology, as that was the subject her professors insisted she would be successful at.
College Years
College didn’t seem like a big jump for Mayla from high school. She continued her steady rates of A’s and B’s and became a pretty good student. Her professors were right in choosing psychology as a good course for Mayla, and she very much enjoyed the subject. It seemed she was able to deal with some surpassed pain involving her mother and father. She learned good, yet simple tactics included talking, writing and simply crying. She was able to push through her memories again using these. However, there still was a barrier that needed overcoming. It seemed only an extreme tactic would suite the situation. In response, Mayla took a week off from school and revisited the site of her father’s death. She had no idea where the exact point he was shot at was, but knew he passed on Nar Shadda.
Nar Shadda surprised Mayla. It was full of poverty and the conditions were just plain unhealthy. There were only two classes: poor and rich, and for every rich person there seemed to be 5 poor. It didn’t take long for Mayla to get over her father’s death, not because she “reconnected” with him, but because she realized a bigger problem that the entire galaxy was facing. She returned to Coruscant, and set aside her troubles for the time being, thinking she would solve them after school.
After one year of college, Mayla easily passed the basic psychology course, and had numerous recommendations in advanced psychology courses. Her choices varied, but she eventually chose to participate in advanced child psychology. This course dealt with the stress children felt as well as how environments affected the emotions of children. Mayla was interested in the topics, and noticed she had faced many of the same problems discussed in class herself. She remained with the program for 3 years. The vigorous exams and such left time for only studying, and so for the time Mayla’s life was based around school.
Mayla graduated at 22 with offers in some exceptional psychological centers on Coruscant.
22-32
After graduating, Mayla obtained a job at a small psychological firm that dealt with distraught children. As for now, Mayla worked the front desk, checking children in and such. Her pay was slightly above Coruscant’s minimum, but it was enough for her to support herself. She purchased a small apartment near her job.
However, living alone gave Mayla time to think about her problems. Her past trip to Nar Shadda had traumatized her in the sense that there were families that needed help and weren’t getting it. It formed a hole in her conscience that needed filling.
It was not soon after graduating college that Mayla received a letter in the mail stating she had acquired a great sum of money due to her mother’s death. She was surprised to hear her mother, whom she barely knew, had put her in her will. None the less, she accepted the money with open arms and moved on with her life.
Now that she had money, Mayla saw that she could make a difference. She quit her job and flew again to Nar Shadda. She arrived as just another person, but would soon make a huge difference.
Mayla had the money for a nice home, but chose to stay in the refugee sector, in a section that was safe from mercenaries. She attempted to connect with the people, but was shoved away. Particularly one family made of a father, mother and son, whom seemed very distressed. Mayla approached the family with caution, and found she was treated with the same respect shown by all of the other refugees. But before being shoved away, Mayla offered the family 100 credits. The family kindly accepted, and from that point on Mayla was welcome to meet with them.
She spoke with the son constantly, using her skills learned in college. The boys name was Martik. He was born on a Felucian settlement, but was forced to flee when Acklay began to attack. Nar Shadda was the only place his family could afford. They left everything to save their lives. Mayla found the boy struggled with anger management issues. She brought games to play with him, drew pictures and eventually Martik opened up to her, revealing he only wished to help, but was angry with himself because he couldn’t. Myla explained that it wasn’t his responsibility, and he should let his parents take care of everything. He nodded, and that was the end of his anger. Mayla had made a difference, and that was what she wished to do.
In the crowded sector on Nar Shadda, word spreads fast, and so within a year families were lined up talk with Mayla, whom they called Mother Sorto. Mayla accepted many families with open arms, working with them in similar way she did with Martik. Children were lined up at her door to play with her. Mayla charged nothing for her work, and for most families she provided credits for clothing, food and other necessities. One family was eventually able to leave the refuge sector and start a real life thanks to Mayla. Her experiences proved to help with the next child, and word continued to spread of her work. She spent a decade working with children, then her “business” was shot down.
It just so happened that the words of Mother Sorto’s work had spread to the mercenaries whom tormented the refuges. They hated to see the refuge’s hopes rise, and feared rebellion may occur if their hearts were lifted more. Some of Mayla’s patients heard of the mercenaries plots to rid of Mayla, and demanded she flee with her life while she still had it. She wasn’t sure of the idea at first, but knew her death would crush the refuges more than her leaving them. So she boarded a ship and flew back to Coruscant. She would forever be known as Mother Sorto to the refuges on Nar Shadda.
32-42
As soon as Mayla’s feet touched the ground on Coruscant she was met with applause. Socked at the response, she wondered who organized the greeting. It just so happened that one of the families Mayla helped moved to Coruscant. They heard she was returning to Coruscant, and insisted she be met with a proper greeting for her doings.
Word of Mother Sorto’s work had spread to even Coruscant. She was not only met by applause, but with a job opportunity. The Republic offered her a position as a psychiatrist for the criminal justice program. She would work with children and adults alike and bring civilians to justice.
She accepted the offer, and it was recommended she return to school and earn a degree in law so she could better understand the processes she would be dealing with. And so, she returned to school for four years and earned a degree in law.
Her time in school was spent similar to that or previous years. She spent hours studying, and kept A’s and B’s for her grades. In the end she ended up enjoying law very much, perhaps even more then psychiatry. After graduating from college yet again, she quit her job with the Republic before even starting and returned to college for a masters in law.
