Bio:
Golan Tersk was born on Agamar, a backwater agricultural planet in the Outer Rim Territories. He comes from a long line of small-time subsistence on both sides of his family. His father, Russell, tilled the same land his father and his father before that and so had tilled, always eking out a decent existence, but just barely. His mother, Nina (nee Polle), also hailed from a farming family, although a slightly more prosperous one than the Tersk side of the family. Golan was one of almost a dozen children--this was quite common in poorer farming families since one's own children were a cheaper source of labor than either droids or hired field hands. This was not to say that the Tersks did not love their children, merely that there was a utilitarian reason for having large families on a farm. Needless to say, Golan would have been but another in this long line of farmers if not for one thing: Force sensitivity.
The first three years of Golan's life were quite normal for a child of a farmer. He was cared for primarily by his mother and older sisters who had yet to reach marriageable age. His father and older brothers spent their days in backbreaking farm labor. As soon as Golan was a little older, it was assumed he would become but another family hand. Even as a baby and then a toddler, he was fed heartily and relatively healthily, it being hoped he would grow big and strong for future labor. In this time, he learned to walk and to talk and that was about it. No one ever said farm life was exciting.
Everything changed when Golan was three years old. It was quite be happenstance that Golan Tersk's Force sensitivity was discovered. A couple of months before his third birthday, he contracted a flu-like illness complete with vomiting and a high fever, but the illness only last a few days and Golan appeared recover, but he kept getting similarly sick over the next several months--never quite sick enough to pose a serious threat to his life, but the recurring nature of his ailment was what was baffling. Getting more and more concerned, his cash-strapped folks finally decided to put out the money to take him to see a doctor in Agamar's nearby capital city of Calna Muun. As it turned out, the sickness was caused by an environmental factor which was fairly easily remedied with several doses of antibiotics, but the key thing was that a sample was taken of young Golan's blood and analyzed. As was standard at this time, blood-tests of young children almost always included a midi-chlorian count. Golan's count came back quite high, indicating the strong possibility of Force sensitivity. The test results were sent to the Jedi Temple and a Knight who was in a nearby system was sent to Agamar to further examine the Golan Tersk case.
After it was determined he was eligible for Jedi training, he was sent to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. At first, he would miss his parents and numerous siblings, but as things picked up for him at the Temple, they more and more slipped out of his mind, like the loss of a happy memory no longer mourned. His parents had little choice in the matter since the needs of the Jedi Order and the Galactic Republic superseded familial connections.
His early years at the Jedi Temple as a Youngling/Jedi Initiate were spent learning the rudiments of the Force and receiving basic education. The Jedi do prefer their membership to be intelligent and knowledgeable after all. Along with several other younglings, he learned how to read and write, as well as the fundamentals of mathematics. He learned some galactic history, science and the like. Despite the stereotypes some might have about farmers from backwater planets, Golan possess good raw intelligence and only needed a chance to apply himself academically--needless to say, he would have had little such chances as a farmer back on Agamar.
At the age of 10, he was chosen by Bothan Jedi Knight Laryn Melan as his Apprentice/Padawan. Even though he would now learn more about the fundamentals and intricacies of the Force, he was still expected to keep up his academic studies through the use of various holo-programs and even informal tutoring by Jedi Knight Laryn. Laryn, a very able Jedi Knight was, fortunately for Golan, a good teacher as well. One of the first things he taught the young Padawan was how to calm his mind, to enter an almost meditative state so as to allow the Force to move through him. In fact, this was absolutely the first thing Laryn began instructing Golan on. As he would often say, "Until you learn this very basic thing, all the lightsaber combat and Force powers in the galaxy will be worthless." Perhaps part of what motivated Golan to learn this meditative skill was a desire to move onto more 'fun' things. It only took him about a four months to have this down enough to please, or at least appease, Laryn.
During Golan's first year as Laryn's Padawan, Laryn was primarily on Coruscant, handling a mixture of administrative duties and Jedi-Republic relations. In many ways, Laryn was more of a diplomatic bureaucrat within the Jedi Order. Still, it did not mean he slacked on training Golan. Once he had learned how to calm himself well enough to please Laryn, he began training on Golan on other basic elements of the Force. He began to learn to sense the presence of others in the Force and to use a training lightsaber to deflect blaster bolts from remotes. All fairly standard for a young Padawan stuck on Coruscant. He was fairly adept at learning to feel and use the Force.
The first official mission Laryn took Golan on involved a visit to Fondor to help the Jedi negotiate the purchase of several freighters and shuttles for improved transport. It was quite boring for Golan who, while Laryn was handling negotiations and schmoozing, was to continue practicing with the remote--sometimes more than one, studying his academics and learning to improve his ability to sense things through the Force. About the only bit of real excitement that occurred was when, at one point, Laryn took Golan on an outing and they just happened to be at the right place when someone decided to try and hold-up a small department store. Laryn put his lightsaber to good use that day, but all Golan could do was play the spectator.
They returned to the Jedi Temple, Jedi Knight Laryn Melan's purchasing mission a success, and Golan, as usual, continued his training. In fact, it intensified now. Laryn setup times for Golan to practice dueling with other Padawan's who were at the Temple, as well as even visiting Knights and an occasional Master or two. In terms of dueling with the latter two groups, Golan always got his rump handed it to him, but he learned so that he had better luck beating his fellow Padawan's more and more often. And, of course, he continued practicing against remotes--it was now always in the plural, learning how to deflect low-powered blaster bolts coming in from multiple directions in extremely rapid succession, sometimes wearing a blinding visor to force him to rely on the Force, both to allow him to sense the incoming bolts and to speed his reflexes. Oh yes, he learned...or got minor, but still painful, singes by the underpowered bolts.
As he improved his lightsaber skills, Laryn taught him more and more ways to use the Force, whether to improve his own attributes (he was already learning how to speed up his reflexes in order to dodge and deflect bolts) or manipulate things around him, especially in the form of telekinetics. Laryn took him on more and more missions, but the vast majority of Jedi Knight Laryn Melan's missions were similar to the one to Fondor: diplomatic and/or business-related. Any action that occurred was usually due to coincidence. Still, Laryn always brought remotes with him and would, using another training lightsaber, duel with Golan himself, helping him to improve his lightsaber skills all around. Then there were more Force lessons and the academic holos. When there was time, they would go on interesting outings, learning more about the planet they were visiting and such. Even though it might have felt boring or routine a lot of the time for Golan, he learned a lot from Laryn Melan.
When Golan reached 21, his master, Laryn, felt he was nearing the proper time to take the Jedi Trials. As they have always been, the Trials were designed to push a future Jedi Knight to the limit of his abilities, to make him realize the necessity of relying on not just his own prowess and skill, but the very Force itself. The Trials would include Golan constructing his own lightsaber and having the pass the four proper Trials (the Trial of Skill, which consisted of a lightsaber duel with an adversary; the Trial of the Flesh, which consisted of the Padawan/future Knight having to overcome great pain, hardship or loss; the Trial of Courage, which consisted of the Padawan/future Knight having to fight courageously in battle, usually pitched against his side; and the Trial of Spirit, a quest of self-discovery as it were). It would take at least a year or so for Golan to be fully prepared, or at least as prepared as possible, for the Trials. They were never easy, regardless of how prepared one believed they were.
The test came and went and 22-year-old Golan--now Jedi Knight Golan Tersk--passed them with flying colors. His master, Laryn Melan of Bothawui, had trained him well. He was now ready to fully serve the Jedi Order, specializing as a Sentinel, seeking a balance between the physical use of the Force and its more esoteric/philosophical side.
Despite having been trained by one of the more bureaucratic and diplomatic Jedi Knights, Golan had little patience for that sort of thing. He sought adventure and action, wanting to be in the thick of things. Perhaps it was because Golan had been unable to get very directly involved with Laryn's missions that he was driven in this direction.
It must be noted that even though he was very active, he always continued his training. Whether it was bringing remotes with him on trips or challenging fellow Knights and some Masters to training duels when at the Jedi Temple, he kept his lightsaber skills honed. He even practiced some unarmed sparring or with the use of non-lightsaber melee weapons, although the majority of his practicing was with the lightsaber. Even though most Jedi tend to shy away from blaster weapons, Golan did not. As soon as he could set his own training regimen--basically, after he became a Jedi Knight--he regularly practiced with the blaster, either actual target shooting or using holo-simulators to allow for more action-based training. He like the longer range of blasters and their easier concealed nature, even in plain sight--a guy walking around with a blaster strapped on was not too uncommon, especially in seedier or more questionable areas, but a lightsaber always gave one away as a Jedi/Force user.
Of course, he also continued learning the ways of the Force, better ways to be more attuned to its flow and rhythm, its echos in the universe. From that comes better ways to manipulate it, whether physically (telekinetics and such) or to use it to more subtly affect the world around him. It is a difficult balance a Sentinel must maintain between its purely physical uses, including its applications in lightsaber combat, and the more 'spiritual' (for lack of a better word) uses. For the most part, he has maintained this balance quite well. It should be noted that he is no slouch academically, earning a combined Bachelor of Arts/Master of Arts in Political Science through a special distance learning program offered by the University of Coruscant, which was great because it meant he could be doing coursework easily while traveling and such.
Most of his missions have been fairly routine--at least for a Jedi Knight. For example, he helped the Corellian government bring down a fairly large smuggling ring that had the nasty habit of bribing and/or threatening any Corellian officials that sought to investigate. Hell, they tried to bribe and threaten Tersk, at the same time actually, when he began to make some headway in the investigation. Two extremely big mistakes right there. And some of their last mistakes too. Another, perhaps in the vein of his old master's specialty, involved Golan serving as an impartial mediator between two sides in a planetary civil war/rebellion. Even though Jedi are involved in some Republic affairs, they are usually trusted as a fair adjudicators when necessary. It was these sorts of undertakings--going after criminals or terrorists too dangerous for planetary governments or private security forces to deal with or acting as a fair judge or representative of either the Jedi Order or the Republic itself--that seemed to dominate Golan Tersk's workload. Although he had never thought he would enjoy diplomatic and political operations, he found a certain reward in helping people to resolve issues and crises and bring peace to an area, thus helping the average person who may have suffered when such troubles occurred.
It was only recently--only a couple of weeks before his 36th Birthday in fact--that he learned he was in the running to get 'promoted' to Jedi Master. Golan had never been one driven by ambition or a need to feel important, although he did not mind when he was commended for either the skills he doggedly spent training for or the missions he undertook at the behest of the Jedi Order. It took a couple of months, but the Jedi High Council officially approved his new ranking as Master.

He was expecting they would pay him a visit soon. After all, blowing up a warehouse full of contraband glitterstim, one of the most potent and illegal drugs in the known galaxy and quite a money-maker for the smuggling types to boot, and illegal arms was liable to anger any of your standard criminal syndicates. This one happened to be the Shin-roo off of Ord Mantell. They had been giving planetary authorities real trouble and they had asked the Republic which in turn has asked the Jedi Order to try and solve these issues. That was where Golan Tersk, one of the newest Masters in the Jedi Order, had come in.
Working with Ord Mantell security forces, at least those actually loyal to the planetary government as opposed to bribed by the Shin-roo, they had picked apart this gang of smugglers, arms dealers and slavers. The piece-de-resistance had been sneaking into one of their main warehouses with just enough incendiary mines and thermal detonators to wreck quite a bit of fiery havoc. The Shin-roo would be out-of-commission for quite awhile and the Ord Mantellian government was quite pleased. Still, Golan knew there would be a last attempt on his life before he left. The Shin-roo had to get some of their own back, or at least try.
Thus it was that Golan Tersk waited in a dingy little motel room for the interlopers to arrive. Might as well get as many of this blasted gang as possible. Now, he waited and he was quite certain they would be here soon. Then he sensed it. Two newcomers with evil in their hearts. Only two? He must have done more damage to the Shin-roo than he thought. Footsteps in the corridor stopping outside his door. A knock, but he did not answer. They had to know he was inside though.
Surreptitiously, Golan, who was crouched behind an overturned table--he had overturned it so as to be covered from fire from the direction of the room's only egress/ingress point (the door)--pulled out his shoulder-holstered (under his outer brown robe) Gastron Arms Model 5 Blaster Pistol. It was small and easily concealabe, but packed a good punch...like a ferrocrete brick though a clari-crystalline plate window. A several blaster bolts from the intruders and booted foot made quick work of the cheaply-made door.
Golan double-tapped, sending the first intruder, himself carrying a blaster pistol, sprawling. His partner, holding a blaster rife, duck back behind the door jamb. Knowing his table would not protect him much from rapid blaster fire, he rolled out into a crouch, edging quickly up to the his side of the door so the rifle-equipped intruder would have to lean inside the room to get a shot at him. The intruder had a different idea though. Suddenly, a flash grenade sailed into the room. With barely time to close his eyes and cover his ears so as to avoid suffering the proverbial sensory overload, Golan could still sense the intruder. The grenade went off and the intruder ran in after the flashbanged explosion. At that moment, Golan lunged at him from his crouched position, headbutting the Shin-roo intruder in the midsection and sending both him and Golan to the ground in an almost wrestle.
The intruder shoved Golan off, going for the blaster rifle that had been knocked from his arms by Golan's tackle, but Golan grabbed the intruder below the knees, tripping him to the ground. They wrestled more, each trying to get the better of the other. They rolled over, still tangling against each other. They neared where Golan had dropped his own pistol when he had covered his eyes and ears to protect from being temporarily stunned by the flash grenade's thunder and light. He pushed Golan off temporarily, going for that blaster with his right and now on his knees. Golan grabbed the intruder from behind as the intruder got his right hand around Golan's dropped blaster pistol. Golan's left arm snaked around the man's neck while the right hand reached out and seized the intruder's lower right and hand to keep from firing at Golan.
It was not for lack of trying that the intruder did not bring the pistol to bear against Golan, it was the fact that Golan had leverage and perhaps some bodily strength on the man. They strained against each other until Golan tightened his left arm around the man's throat, making tight pull-and-twist motion. The chilling sound of bones cracking and the intruder going limp signaled that Golan snapped the man's neck in a twisting motion. Letting the intruder go, he stood up, picking his own pistol back up and holstering it. Yes, he had won that little fight and that was two less Shin-roo thugs the Ord Mantellian authorities would have to deal with.
Checking his holochronometer, Golan smiled slightly in spite of himself. He would have just enough time to grab some lunch before headed to the spaceport to book passage back to Coruscant and the Jedi Temple.
