"My rescuers arrived late one night as I was trying to find the sleep that was becoming so increasingly evasive," Kvothe began, as he glanced out of the window. "There were four of them. They were part of a group in the order that's called the Swords the Diligence; a group that's committed to hunting down traitors and heretics alike, and, in cases like mine, to rescue Mythics that have been taken prisoner. Perhaps because of their efforts, or perhaps because of my hatred for my brother, I've decided to follow in their paths, and so that is what I am today. But, that's not a part of this story.
"They infiltrated the base, got to me, and got me out before the Unum had a chance to mount much of a retaliation. When we got out of the area of the outpost that I'd been living in, which was very poorly lit, and into a more comfortable segment, I got to find out about one of the side-effects of having so much Etherium pumped into me." Kvothe smiled ruefully as his eyes darted over the various displays on the panel in front of him. Everything looked alright, and he nodded to himself in satisfaction.
"See, a side effect of Etherium is that it makes your eyes more sensitive to light. With normal usage, it's not too bad, and actually makes it a little bit easier to make things out in the dark. But, the amount of the stuff that had been pumped into me was far beyond normal, and I was, more or less blinded in any environment that was at least sort of well lit." He gestured at the interior of the ship, which was comfortably lit. "This? I wouldn't be able to see a thing. Being outside in the daylight was painful.
"But, one of them made a blindfold for me from part of her sleeve and they guided me out. We got into the speeder they came in, and for the first time in a year, I finally felt some hope. 'It's finally over,' I thought. I was wrong.
"Some Unum members gave chase, and our speeder ended up getting shot down somewhere in the middle of the swamp. I passed out in the crash, so I can only guess that one of the Swords hid me away among some fallen trees before the Unum pursuers swept through a short while later and killed them all." A note of sorrow came into his voice and he paused again before continuing. "They died because I wouldn't listen to Fides when he urged me not to go after Vorian. It's something I still regret to this day. But, I'm won't make you endure my dwelling on that, so onward I go.
"So, with my rescuers dead and the speeder destroyed, I found myself alone in the middle of the swamp, with no clue as to where to go to get out. Physically, I was weak, and because the Etherium still in my system blinded me when the sun was out, I could only travel at night. But still, I managed to survive. I learned what plants you can eat without killing yourself in the Tower, and so I had a source of food, and disgusting as it was, the water in the swamp was still water.
"I could not see the sun during the day for already-mentioned reasons, and the tree canopy made it nearly-impossible to see the moons, so I simply picked a direction and went off. Luckily, I ran into a river that runs down from the plains and through the swamp out to the ocean, and in doing so, I found a way out." Kvothe sighed and fell silent for a moment. It'd been eight years since those events, but they still burned brightly in his memory, as did the range of emotions he'd felt at the time: fear, anger, sorrow, and, surprisingly, a small kernel of hope when he found the river; hope that he would escape the swamp alive.
"I followed the river north, and from there it was a relatively simple matter. I say relatively because I was still in a terrible condition, and the going was much slower than it would be if I were to make that journey today. But I pressed on, sleeping through the day and moving at night, eating whatever edible plant life I could find and thankful that the river's water was relatively clean."
Kvothe turned to glance at Fas as a smile grew on his face. "Part of the way up the river, I ran into Fas. He wasn't much better off than I was at the time. See, flickercats are born in trios, and the first two form a bond with each other. The third is left partnerless, and often dies. Fas was the third born in his litter, and, as I said, was not much better than I was at the time I found him. In some strange moment of compassion for him, I reached out telepathically, and I think it was then that the bond we have now was formed. It was weak then, but he followed me from a distance as I kept pushing up the river. Eventually, we made it to a town that sat on the river near the border of the swamp and the plains, and the ordeal was finally over. A trip that would've taken a few hours in a speeder took me a few weeks, but I survived. I returned to the Tower, and I suppose the rest is history from there."
Kvothe fell silent for a few moments as he turned over those events in his mind again. "I suppose the time in the swamp might seem a bit anti climatic after the things I went through to get there, but that's what my time out in the wilderness was like." He shrugged. "It's not at all something I'd like to go through again."

"It might seem anti-climactic, but if that's the story, that's the story." Alindra saw the coastline as it dominated the expanse of what she could see. When she started to slow her approach, she looked over the conrtols, making sure the Masada would remain in the air. The last thing Alindra wanted on her first lesson was to crash someone else's ship.
Alindra brought everything to a stop. She turned and looked at both of her passengers, understanding that they had all been taken from what they knew and felt, thrown into a wilderness that cared nothing for their survival.
"Too much has been taken from us," Alindra said. "I want to take something back. What about you? If you could have anything right now, what would it be?"

Kvothe didn't even have to think to answer Alindra's question. "Revenge," he said, as if it were obvious. It was a goal he'd held deep within his heart for nearly eight years now. "I want to make my brother experience the same pain that he put me through. I want to make him suffer for killing my best friend. For betraying me and everyone else in my order." Kvothe's gaze grew distant as he talked, but he wasn't done.
"And all of the traitors that have turned their backs on the Mythics. All of those that are trying to fight against the order that made them who they are." A quiet fury arose in his voice, and for once, the entirety of his irises became red as anger boiled up inside of him. "They must die. They're heretics, all of them. They don't deserve any mercy. They don't deserve to be negotiated with. The only possible judgment for their crimes can be death."
He sat there, brooding for a moment, before the anger started to fade and his eyes returned to their natural hazel. "What about you Alindra? What is it that you want?"

"What do I want?" Alindra was only partially surprised by Kvothe turning her question back on her. There were a lot of ways she could answer. She could say something simple, something she would want for the moment and no longer. She could say something direct and sincere. She could say her grandest plans or her quietest ambitions.
"I think... well, there are a couple of things." Taking a moment to choose her words, Alindra put the ship into hover mode, making sure it was clear of anything that might collide with it. "Ultimately, I think I want to be Queen. Or Duchess. Maybe Baroness. I want to rule over something, not the entire galaxy, but maybe a planet. When I do that, everyone I see will have to serve me unless I say otherwise.
"Of course, there's also my sister. Laira deserves to know what she's really capable of. She's so bright and sweet and wonderful. I've never met anyone as brilliant as her, which might be saying something since she's a lot younger than I am." In a quieter volume, Alindra said, "I want to teach her to use the Force."

"Seems like you've got some grander things in mind for your future than I do." Kvothe honestly didn't know what he'd set his mind toward doing if he ever managed to kill Vorian. There'd still be the rebels to put down, but after they were dealt with? It was something he'd have to ponder later; for the time being he'd have to focus on not being killed, by Vorian, as he should've been in their last encounter.
"It must be nice to have a sibling that isn't an enemy," he said with a wistful sigh. "I sometimes wonder what things would be like if Vorian and I hadn't always been at each other's throats, but that's the hand we were dealt, I suppose.
"But your sister is Myth- er... Force sensitive, you say?" Kvothe's expression became thoughtful for a moment. "I've never trained anyone, so I can't be sure, but, if your sister is as bright as you say she is, I'd imagine it wouldn't be that hard for you to teach her." He paused for a moment, and wondered about Alindra's own training. She could obviously use the Force, but he didn't recall hearing anything in what she'd told him of her story so far. "How much training have you had yourself, if I may ask?"

"I was trained by an old woman who lived in the wilderness on Almania. Caiella Stormfist." Alindra took the lightsaber from her belt and held it up for a moment. "This was hers. I don't know how long ago she made it, probably when she was a padawan or just started out as a knight." She put the lightsaber back and added, "I don't really know."
Alindra wasn't how much she should say, so she stuck close to the question Kvothe had asked. "I was out there only for a month maybe before she found me. So, I suppose for the better part of a year, she trained me. I learned to move faster, jump higher, even a few other things."
Alindra didn't mention her other stint of training after she reached Dantooine. She wasn't sure how well Kvothe would take to the idea that she was a Sith Initiate, looking to spill blood and kill in the name of a darker purpose. How nice would she seem if she said she intended to convert her sister into her most loyal dark minion, bound to obey her every thought? Alindra didn't say any of it.

"I see." So Alindra'd had about as much training as he'd expected. On the surface, it didn't sound like much, but you could learn a surprising amount of things in a year, so he couldn't jump to conclusions about where she might be. "So do you just practice your skills on your own, now that you're away from Caielia?" He meant the question sincerely. Now that his own training was done--and especially now that he was away from Aiaru--he did most of his practice alone. Perhaps it wasn't as effective as having someone lead him through things, but there was always room to hone what skills he already knew.
Of course, his mind also drifted back to the old lightsaber that she held up, and that made him remember the way it seemed to go out when she'd had it held to the man's throat back in the street. The way it flickered in and out for a few moments before it disappeared had been odd, to say the least. Kvothe thought about it in silence for a few moments before deciding to ask Alindra. "I'll admit that I'm not an expert on lightsabers," he said with a wry gesture at his sword and staff, which were leaning against a wall, "but the way yours went out in the street... They aren't supposed to do that, are they? I mean, from what I do know, they're supposed to be able to stay on for a very long time, right? Longer than I could ever imagine anyone needed them to run at one time, anyway."

"I'll practice some on my own, but I'm actually trying to get some into a group that will help me train a little more often." Kvothe was starting to dig, though Alindra wasn't sure if it was because he was curious or because he wanted something. But before he could ask anything too direct, his questions shifted to focus on Alindra's weapon.
"My lightsaber doesn't work right. It hasn't worked since I got it. It didn't work when I was out in the wild and the old woman was still carrying it. It probably didn't work much before then. Laira messed with it when I walked out of the wilderness; she's the one who made it work enough to be effective." In an effort to put distance between her affiliation and herself, Alindra added, "I figure I'll be fine as long as no one expects me to have a lightsaber duel."

Kvothe grunted in understanding when Alindra explained about her lightsaber, though his mind had gone back to focus on what she'd said about joining a group. I wonder what group she might be joining. The Jedi were out of the question, since, from what he knew, they only took children, odd as that might be. He had very strong doubts that she meant his own order. But, there were numerous organizations throughout the Galaxy, some large, some small. He suspected that, if one had a mind to look, it wouldn't be that hard to find one. Kvothe was of a mind to inquire into what group she might be joining, but, for some reason, decided to put that off until later. He'd carry on with the current line of conversation instead.
"Well, let's hope that you don't ever have to get into a duel, then, eh? Seems to me like having your weapon go out part way through would be catastrophic, to say the least." As he sat there, looking out onto the beautiful waters down below that bordered the sand of the coast, a thought came into his mind. "Hmm... I don't really know anything about lightsaber construction, but they use crystals, right? To focus the beam? Maybe something's wrong with the crystal? This world is rife with crystals, from what I know of it through my studies. Perhaps getting a new one might help sort some of the issues out. Or maybe not." Now that he thought on it, he wasn't sure if his reasoning made any sense, but he just shrugged it off. "Like I said, I don't know much about how lightsabers work."

Alindra saw the coastline and thought it looked spectacular. When she'd been a slave dancer, she overheard a few of the other girls talking once, lamenting that they couldn't go for a swim on the coast of their homeworlds, wherever they may be. She looked out and wondered how cool the water would be on her skin, how it would feel to soak up sunlight and touch the breeze.
Then Kvothe said something that pushed Alindra even further. I don't really know anything about lightsaber construction, but they use crystals, right? To focus the beam? Maybe something's wrong with the crystal? This world is rife with crystals, from what I know of it through my studies. Perhaps getting a new one might help sort some of the issues out. Or maybe not."
"If this world has crystals," Alindra said, an excited grin forming on her face, "then we should go look." She started looking over all the controls, making sure she could figure out the process to operate a landing properly. "Where do you think we should set down? I want to get out and look."

Apparently, Kvothe's seat-of-the-pants suggestion was one that was of a good deal of interest to Alindra. He wouldn't mind seeing some lightsaber crystals for himself though. Perhaps he could even get a few of his own to take back to Aiaru, not that ever planned on making a saber. "I'm not sure, really. I've heard crystals are common in caves, though."
He enlarged the map that hovered in the air before him so that he could scan over the terrain for a sign of anything that looked like the entrance to a cave. "There's what might be a cave about a mile or two down the coast. Looks like it's in the side of a hill a short ways inland. Just continue on the path we're on, and we should get there in just a moment." He looked up and could already see the hill off in the distance, just a short ways away.
"To land, you hit the same control you did to raise the landing gear. That'll lower it, and from there you just slow down and ease her down to a flat area."

Following Kvothe's instructions, Alindra brought the Masada down as smoothly as expected. It was farther from the coast than Alindra would really have liked, but she wasn't horribly concerned with that. There were more pressing matters at hand and she wanted to see to things properly. If she had to sacrifice the experience of taking a swim, or even delay it, to get a lightsaber crystal of her own... well, that wouldn't bother her.
Once they had settled on the ground, Alindra powered down the engines, doing what she could to restore things to the order they had been in when she first sat in the pilot's seat. It was still a beginning, but Alindra had started to understand what it meant to pilot a ship. She knew she would be able to do it without help in time.
Outside the ship, Alindra looked toward the cave, not knowing what was inside. She had experience with caves--on Almania. However, she decided that preparing to go in one cave would be like preparoing to go into another. She started looking around for something to serve as a handle. "We need to find a thick branch or a long bone," she said. "I'm not going into any cave blind."
While she looked, she found a pair of rocks that would be good to use as a flint. Both were dry and had the right texture. She was on her way to making at least one torch and, if need arose, a fire.

Alindra took the ship down smoothly, and Kvothe's face split into a stupid grin. "Good job. I think, in time, you'll fly very well. You're off to a great start, as is. Better than I did my first flight, anyway." With that, he stood and walked to retrieve his staff. He nearly took his sword as well, but decided there would probably be little use for it, and left it. Fas rose from where he was laying on the ground and fell in at Kvothe's side, and the two made their way outside.
Kvothe wandered over toward the mouth of the cave when he made it out of the ship. There was something in there, certainly. It wasn't a feeling he'd felt since he went out into the swamp with his father so many years ago to make his staff. They'd gone to a place where the Force was strong, and could be felt, almost as if it was manifesting itself there. What he felt, coming from deep within the cave, was something similar to that. It was different, in a way, but at the same time, it wasn't. Maybe there are crystals in there, he mused.
When he turned, he saw that Alindra was gathering supplies to make a fire, presumably to light their way within the cave, which was, Kvothe would admit, quite dark. "Making a fire from scratch," he said as he walked over to stand near her. "A good skill to know. Certainly a useful one for being able to stay warm if needed, or to cook food. And, of course, to light your way when you need it. But, I'd like to show you something, if I may." He smiled knowingly and held his hand out in between them, palm up, and cupped gently, as if he was holding something within it.
Kvothe reached out to tap the Mythos, and a moment later, a soft light appeared, seemingly hovering over his palm. "Flare," he said softly as he looked up to Alindra's eyes. "See, many of the areas in the Tower are not that well let, given that they're inhabited by a group of people who use a drug that enhances low-light vision. But, there's also this, for when you need that bit of extra light." He moved his hand around, showing how the little sphere of light stayed in front of his palm as he did so. "Every Mythos-sensitive in the order is taught this power at a young age, as it's a pretty simple power. Of course, with a bit more energy," he increased the amount of Mythos he was putting into it, and the light grew brighter, "you can do that. It doesn't really get bright enough to cause any harm, though. It's a glorified flashlight, but a very convenient one.
"And of course, there's him." He motioned toward Fas--who was off pawing at some insect in the grass a few feet away--with his head. "Those lights on his tail are brighter than they look in a well lit area."

Watching the Flare appear in Kvothe's hand, Alindra knew there was still a lot she didn't know about the Force. If this "Mythic" could make a torch with no fuel source and no flame, he could likely do a lot more. None of the Sith Alindra had encountered could do such a thing, probably because they didn't know how to.
Alindra licked her lips briefly before moving toward the cave. "It might be a glorified flashlight, but it's not a stretch to go from that to something more powerful." She climbed up a small patch of rock before stopping and looking back at Fas and his insect plaything. "Hey, Fas. Whenever you get done there, I think you and Kvothe got elected to scout this cave for me."

"Perhaps," Kvothe said thoughtfully. There was a technique that some knew how to do called Force Blinding produced a very bright flash to blind one's opponents. Perhaps it was similar to Flare, but Kvothe hadn't a clue how it worked. But that wasn't for know.
Alindra moved over to settle down on a rock and informed Fas--and Kvothe--that they'd be going into the cave to check it out. Kvothe grinned wryly and laughed. "Goody." He whistled to Fas, who know had whatever bug he'd been playing with in his mouth, and called him over. "Come on, then. Looks like we're going spelunking. And do let that poor thing go, will you?" The flickercat stared at him for a moment before spitting the insect--which looked to be a beetle of some sort--out into the grass and wandering over to walk by his side. Kvothe shook his head in amusement and looked at Alindra again. "We'll make sure everything's alright in there. Though I can't imagine that anything would be living inside of that place. Never hurts to be careful though."
With that, he went off into the mouth of the cave. The sunlight filtering in was enough for him to see for a good ways in, especially with the increased light sensitivity that the Etherium addiction brought. But, there was a curve in the path part of the way down, and Kvothe had to bring his hand up and create some light. The path curved down, and the faint sound of dripping echoed out from deeper within the cave. Seems safe enough so far. He couldn't sense anything, other than that sensation he'd felt outside of the cave and Fas, and nearing the edge of his ability to sense her, Alindra.
There was a faint splash when the pathway leveled out again. Kvothe looked down to see a thin layer of water on the ground, with mist hovering just above that. He could see that the path blossomed out into a large chamber a few feet deeper in, though he saw no signs of crystals yet. The feeling he'd felt outside the cave was definitely stronger, though.
He stretched his senses toward Alindra, who was now just barely on edge of the range of what he could reach. "Allindra, everything seems fine so far," he spoke to her, though it dawned on him that, unless she had some similar ability to his mind speaking, she wouldn't be able to respond. Perhaps bringing a comm device would have been wise. Still, he needed a way to know if he should continue on, or if she'd come to join him, since if he went any further, he wouldn't have a way to get to her at all, save backtracking to exit the cave again. An idea for how to handle that struck him.
"I'm sending Fas back up out of the cave. If you want to come down, I'll be waiting for you, and you can just bring him with you. If not, just send him back, and I'll continue on." He gave his instructions to Fas, and the flickercat bounded off, to go back out of the cave. In the mean time, Kvothe leaned against one of the rough, rocky walls, held still held up to illuminate the area around him, and waited.

She'd only meant for them to go into the cave first. Kvothe was quite determined, as was Fas. They were both zealous when the moment fit for them to be. Since they had lights and Alindra didn't, they went on, exploring the cave with little thought otherwise.
Waiting, Alindra looked at the rocks in front of her and wondered just how she would activate any crystals should she find some that would work. There was meditation involved, some sort of act of bonding the crystals to her own connection to the Force.
It struck her how she would do it, though it would mean finding a few warm bodies to drain. She would need the blood, just like she had when she first started to make her pilgrimage to locate the Sith.
But the moment, she started to focus on some details, Fas appeared along with a mental message from Kvothe. "You're just the sweetest flickercat ever, aren't you, Fas?" Alindra rubbed Fas' behind the ears and followed him into the cave.
A few minutes later, they caught up with Kvothe and Alindra carefully whispered, "You called?"

Save the slow, steady dripping of water from wherever it was coming from, all was silent around Kvothe. He simply waited there, leaning against the wall, absorbed in his own thoughts for the time being. After a while, he could feel Fas approaching, along with Alindra.
A few moments later, she arrived, with Fas at her side, lighting the way. "Aye, I called." Kvothe did not speak any louder than normal, but the youthful tenor of his voice reverberated throughout the cave to carry on deeper in. His attention turned to look deeper in as he listened to it fade before be grunted and returned his gaze to Alindra.
"There's definitely something here. I can feel it. I guess the only way to know is to keep going though, eh?" He turned and started off, motioning for Alindra and Fas to follow.
As they moved deeper in, into the area where the little path suddenly swelled out in all directions, making a huge corridor, Kvothe's mind was drawn back to what Alindra said earlier: that she was going to be a part of some group to help her with her powers. Kvothe's curiosity was getting the better of him, and so he decided to ask what he originally thought he would put off. If nothing else, it could be something for a bit of conversation as they walked on.
"You said that you would be joining a group to help you with your training, right?" He paused for a moment. "If I may ask, what kind of group is it? Are they some sort of official organization, or is it just a gathering of Mythos-sensitives? I know such groups can be either..."

"Yes," Alindra said. "Let's keep going." She followed Kvothe for some time, wondering what they might find. Would it be just a crystal bed? Would there be a lost city of muck? Would she find the key to keeping the universe together? Alindra doubted all these things. She knew, just as Kvothe and Fas did, that something was up ahead.
From her belt, Alindra found a hair clip, which she fastened to her sleeve while they walked. With her hands, she pulled her hair back so it wouldn't be in her eyes, should she have to fight. When she clipped it back, she tried to let it hang behind her, since she wouldn't be caught dead not trying to look attractive.
After walking a short distance, Kvothe asked a question that put Alindra on edge. "You said that you would be joining a group to help you with your training, right?" She replied with a simple affirmative noise. "If I may ask, what kind of group is it? Are they some sort of official organization, or is it just a gathering of Mythos-sensitives? I know such groups can be either..."
It was unwise for anyone to announce at any time that they were a member of the Sith. A Jedi would attack. Someone from the Republic might try to make an arrest. Another Sith could find it insulting and attack. It was generally a bad idea.
"They're not an official group by any means." Not by Jedi means, at least. "There are a few there who aren't Force or Mythos users, but most of us are. We're looking to make ourselves better than what we were, since a lot of us have been kicked around for most of our lives."

"Sounds reasonable enough." Kvothe glanced at Alindra out of the corner of his eye for a moment as he walked on. It seemed--at least to him--that she was avoiding answering the question head on; of course, he might just have been reading her incorrectly, so he didn't put much into it. Whatever it is, it's her right to do as she wishes. His attention returned to the front as he said "I wish you well with your group, then."
For a time they continued on, and Kvothe found himself wondering how much farther in the path would go before they found something. The path turned yet again, and as they turned 'round the bend, they walked into the source of the sensation Kvothe'd felt in the Force.
It was a chamber; a massive chamber that stretched out below them, swelling out in all directions. The same water that lay on the floor of the path leading up to it formed a shallow pool on the ground floor, and rising out of that pool on little islands of dirt and stone lay their prize.
Crystals.
There was a fair deal of them, in every color Kvothe could imagine, and a second glance showed that the back wall was covered in them. What's more, he could understand that this was the place where the Force had been emanating from. He could feel it.
An awed breath escaped him as his eyes widened, and for a moment he was speechless. He turned to Alindra to see how she was reacting before going on to say "I think we found them."

Every possible color was displayed for her, waiting for her to pick one and make her choice. It would be the color others would see when she approached. What she chose would mark her, mark that she was not only using a lightsaber, but it would be a subtle indicator of her personality, her demeanor, her very way of life.
A full spectrum of possibility had pooled over time, forming over the ages. Alindra stepped forward, keeping her distance from the pool. Crouching low, she reached out, touching at the air close to the pool. She couldn't choose, not for a lack of wanting a crystal of her own. Alindra didn't know which one she should take.
"This place is heavenly," she whispered. "It's like I was always supposed to come here, but I never even knew I wanted to."
Alindra turned upward, tears beating at the edge of her eyes as she looked at Kvothe. "I've never seen something like this before. It's just..." She turned back, keeping her eyes glazed with the multi-colored sparkles all around her.
"Beautiful."
