Based on the hull of a prototype atmospheric attack craft, the Warhawk is a Kuat sanctioned retrofit to convert the prototype for duty in the vacuum of space. After recognizing the success that the prototype, nicknamed Firehawk, the Kuat development team behind the fighter decided to begin work on an advanced platform, one that would translate the punch and versatility of the atmospheric version into an effective carrier launched unit.
However, this proved difficult as such a system required new problems be taken into account. Three concepts were drafted and rejected, either being too expensive, too unwieldy, or too unreliable to produce.
The designers then decided to build off the existing model, replacing engines, adding more repulsors and a shield generator, and increasing the firepower. The concept was accepted and designs were drafted over a period of several months. Before the plans could be put into action to convert any of the existing prototypes, 75% were destroyed in an act of bad tactical planning. Management decided the project be scrapped and shelved both the concept and the Firehawk Program.
Several years later a combat report from the Republic Cruiser Ascension reinvigorated interest in the project when a single Firehawk was dropped from orbit into the Subterrel underground to provide support. Kuat's experimental division was overjoyed to hear the news and immediately contacted the tech officer of the Firehawk as well as it's primary mechanic. Using their contacts with the Republic Navy, Kuat presented the mechanics with the conversion project. The equipment to refit the Firehawk was obtained and work began within a few standard galactic days. Refitting has yet to be completed.
The Retrofitted X-2.55.7, designated Warhawk, retains many of the abilities of its base platform. The standard weapon systems were maintained, two medium rotary laser cannons mounted on the nose and two batteries of small concussion missiles. The cockpit received only rudimentary updates including a few new controls for added repulsors and weapons and the gunner seat was brought foreword to save space. The tail and landing mechanisms were also spared more critical updates, save a pairing of the wheels on each strut.
At a distance the 'Hawk looks practically identical. However, many things were altered on both the interior and exterior even if they are not visible at first. The wingspan was increased and the lift planes were increased, the folding tips reinforced and fitted with miniaturized repulsor-field generators. The extended wings also allowed for the mounting of a second set of hardpoints, increasing the potential firepower but also the risk of fire control loss if the circuits are damaged. The addition of more hardpoints also increase the need of a gunnery officer to efficiently arm and fire many of the secondary weapons. The turbofan engines were stripped for specially designed Kuat Ion engines which also changed the fuel requirement but allowing for more energy to be generated from the denser fuel source. Larger fuel cells, however, mean a larger hull, more atmospheric drag, and a larger cross-section.
Much of the nose cannon's rotary mechanisms were stripped, to free up space for the addition of the life support system, contained cockpit, and shield generator. While this does reduce the gunner's ability to strafe ground targets it maintains the standard foreword firepower. When compared to its predecessor the speed saw a reduction and the cross sectional profile was increased. However the chief improvements include modestly increased firepower, survivability, and space combat capability while still retaining the potential to provide ground support in-atmo.
