Morning. Zarene Yin groaned as she slowly opened her eyes, only to find Sir Scruffy, her cat, sitting on top of her stomach, mewing loudly. "Get off," she muttered, and the cat obediently hopped onto the floor, but continued his mewing. "What? Stop it," Zarene said as she sat up, "Isn't it Gabby's turn to feed you today?"
"... Oh. Right. Nevermind." She sighed. "I guess I'm on it then." Reluctantly, she got up, pouring Sir Scruffy's food into his bowl before going off to brush her teeth, get dressed, the usual morning routine.
She sat down in front her terminal as she brushed her hair, so that she could check her messages. There was one from Captain Haviar with a summary of the Taipan's last few training exercises. Nothing unusual. She skimmed it. She was about to open a report from Sebban when there was a knock on the door. Zarene waved a hand at the door. It slid, revealing a young Rodian initiate standing the hallway.
"I have a mission from Mistress Renata," the Rodian said, handing Zarene a datapad, which she immediately switched on and began reading.
"Shyrack and wraids," Zarene muttered. "Sounds awfully trivial. I wonder why the Mistress thought that this needed my attention."
"We've already had two initiates go into the caves. They haven't come back yet." The Initiate seemed nervous, as if he has afraid that Zarene was going to suddenly lash out at him.
"Two initiates. By Shyracks? Seriously?"
"We... we don't know yet."
"Fine. Tell Mistress Renata that I'll take care of it. Does she want me to do this alone or should I be assembling a team?" She immediately began trying to remember who was currently at the Temple and not on mission. Onin? No, he was out on some assignment with Makura. She supposed that that ruled out Makura too. Arjun? The man had disappeared some time ago to who-knows-where. Yarum? She'd probably have to get Lord Iniquitous's permission first. Too much trouble.
"I... I think the Mistress Renata has a team assigned. On the next page."
Zarene nodded, flipping over to the second page. She read the names, before looking back up at the initiate with a look of disbelief and irritation on her face, who winced in reaction. "You have got to be kidding me."
