In 3800 BBY, Ryloth Arms developed a homegrown Twi'lek weapon, in the finest practical traditions. The goal was to create a weapon durable enough to function in any environment, originally only on Ryloth (namely scorching heat and freezing cold). However, visiting spacers and roaming types saw local Twi'leks with these heavy and versatile blasters, and very soon demand skyrocketed. Ryloth found new business selling such arms to visitors, and a booming trade was soon formed.
Not to miss out on a good deal, the criminal underworld sent these weapons into the core worlds and the inner rim, where they were promptly banned as 'too dangerous for civilian ownership.'
Naturally that only increased the appeal.
However, in 3743, Ryloth Arms fell on hard times and had a reduction in force. Production of the RA-29 fell into a slump, and then became a mere trickle. For years it seemed the company would go bankrupt, and with the prevalence of knock-offs of their designs produced cheaper elsewhere in the outer rim, they ultimately did.
Over the next 150 years, the company went in and out of existence a dozen times, producing a few of their classic designs, but never in great quantity.
In 3601 BBY, a proper RA-29 is a seldom-seen sight, usually considered collector's items, while knock-offs are much more commonly seen, with a variety of features. However, they can still be found for sale in good condition throughout the galaxy, and in the hands of a wide variety of owners.
All in all, roughly a hundred million of these were produced, with many times more knock-offs.
