Ekerin's tail swished behind him rhythmically as he entered the Jedi archives, heralded only by a tiny pique in the lightside presence of the force. While the center aisle was brightened by a large window at the end of the hall, the many small niches and offshoots of the archive were illuminated only by the blue hue of the many holobooks lining the shelves. His master, Sellah, had asked him to find and study a textbook on galactic politics, after he had asked about some aspect or other she didn't immediately have the answer to. He had tried to tell her it was okay; that he wasn't even that interested, but she had insisted that he fulfill his curiosity.
And he had had every intention of listening to her...
...Right up until he saw what appeared to be a Hutt in the archives.
What the frell was going on here?
The Amaran stood on tip-paws and scanned the immediate area with a quick turn of his head. There was a number of Jedi within clear sight; did they not notice the Hutt? His features shifted into a mixture of concern and puzzled curiosity as he shifted nervously. Large pointed ears tweaked irritably and then flattened as the thirteen year-old laid a clawed hand on the hilt of his lightsaber.
Be polite first, jump to conclusions later... Ekerin thought to himself as he rolled bright sapphire-lensed eyes at his behavior and moved his hand back down to his side. He was acting like a youngling; Master Sellah would be disappointed with him.
Lithe digit-grade legs brought him closer to the much larger being, and claws clicked on the polished floor briskly as he extended a tiny ribbon of the force towards the Hutt, probing for its presence.
"Excuse me? Do you need any help?” The Amaran asked cordially, set on finding out what this being was doing in the archives.
“My name's Ekerin."

Carlando had been once again staring at the Great Holocron, as he had been wont to do. His blue eyes stared longingly at it, desperately wanting to probe its depths. But he was allowed to do no more than stare at it.
He had just turned to slither out of the archives when the Amaran approached him. He jumped a little, dropping the training saber he'd been holding. It rolled across the floor, coming to rest at the digitigrade feet of the vulpine Padawan. He quickly pulled it back to himself, and began fidgeting with it.
The blue Hutt cast his eyes towards the floor, not daring to make eye contact with Ekerin. "My..name is Carlando," he replied shyly. "I don't really need help..I know these archives like the back of my hand.."

Ekerin's blue-eyed inquisitive gaze trickled down to the training lightsaber the Hutt had dropped, regarding it with an air of curiosity before it was pulled back to its owner. Implications nagged at the back of his mind like gnats; he just needed half a second to straighten them all out.
"I like the archives too." Ekerin said with an amiable grin, skating over the potential for an awkward silence and displaying salient teeth at the same time. The Amaran tilted his head slightly. With Carl's size, he had the potential to be old enough to be a Jedi knight, but his attitude seemed all wrong for that. Mrrrrrrrrrr...
"Are you a padawan too, Carlando?" An apologetic half-smile at his own lack of knowledge; Ekerin folded his hands behind his back as his tail drifted aimlessly. "Frankly, I haven't seen very many Hutts around."

Carlando shook his head. "No, I'm still just a youngling," he replied. "Nobody has taken me yet."
He looked up at Ekerin upon registering him as technically his elder, and his gaze grew firm and serious. "I'm the only Hutt in the temple, to my knowledge, he replied. "If there are others, then I don't know of them." He twirled the hilt of his saber in one hand, ignited it, then put it away.
"Who is your Master?" Carlando asked politely, then gestured towards the entrance to the archives, slithering towards them after doing so. "What species are they?"

Ekerin nodded thoughtfully as Carlando spoke. He tried to picture the Hutt as a knight, found the acrobatic mental picture slightly amusing, and shuffled it into the folder next to his imagined appearance of a giddy, hyper Sellah.
"That must get sort've lonely..." The Amaran mused with a nod, "But you're also one of a kind." Without missing a beat, Ecky continued to talk as they dawdled towards the entryway. "My master is Sellah Bellae, she's a Selonian, and a guardian. Strong, intelligent, very... straightforward?" Ekerin's features scrunched into a position of thought for a moment. "I think that's how I'd put it, yes."
"I was kind of worried at first, because the council assigned me to Sellah and she didn't request me, but it's worked out rather well so far." The Amaran looked around quickly for eavesdroppers before adding in a hushed tone with widened eyes, "But she's very, very, serious."
Thoughts confided, Ekerin straightened again, eying his strange blue companion anew with a hint of amusement.
"Not that this is of much concern, but where are we going?"

Carlando nodded sagely. "Guardian..hmmm.."
He pondered this. Envisioned himself in combat. It was..not an endearing picture. He chuckled. "..No. I could never be a Guardian. My place is in the Archives. Protecting our greatest treasure: Knowledge." He looked towards the ceiling.
"If you don't mind me getting philosophical...I believe that the greatest measure of a culture is how they keep their knowledge. Even if a society is not proud of its roots..it must not forget them."

Ekerin tilted his head to the side curiously; he had never really considered what made a civilization great. Obviously, there were Jedi that protected people, and he innately believed the Order to be a cornerstone of the republic, but storing knowledge had never quite factored in there on the level of the Jedi Order for him. The concept hit a chord in him somewhere though; at the least it merited some degree of further reflection before being immediately adopted as his own.
"Since the archives are alleged to have everything, kept in the best format possible," Ekerin queried lightly, folding his russet-furred arms behind his head as they continued to respectively slither and walk towards the door. "does that mean we're really special?"

"The Jedi Order is part of the Republic," Carlando replied. He sincerely believed this. The Republic, to him, was indeed a great and wonderful civilization. Dozens of different societies, coming together to form a great whole. A concept not unlike the Jedi Order. "A key part of the concept of a Galactic Republic. So yes. We are special."

Ekerin blinked as the Hutt finished speaking. Somewhere back there, the puppy-dog of comprehension had abruptly crashed into a sliding glass door.
Oh, so that's the difference between a potential consular and a guardian's thought processes.
The Amaran had acknowledged that every being had their own way of saying and doing things not too long ago; most definitely a maturity thing. With this admittance, came understanding and empathy.
...Sometimes.
Evidently, other times he was just left confused. But that was okay, all things considered. Ekerin shifted his arms slightly as he grinned wryly at the Hutt. At least he had understood the tail end of the conversation.
"Excellent, I do so enjoy being special."
His clawed feet snicked on the polished floor sharply as the pair left the archives. However, as soon as they stepped outside the threshold, the padawan's conscience loudly complained about his lack of drive to fulfill what Master Sellah had asked.
This promptly resulted in the Amaran freezing before casting an apologetic look at Carl.
"Iiiiii don't suppose you could spare a moment to help me find a certain datapad on politics?"

If Carlando's stubby arms could reach his forehead, he'd have facepalmed. Instead, he just scratched at the little white stubble growing on his chin; a genetic mutation in some Hutts caused them to grow hair, and nodded. "I'm sure I can assist you," he said, turning around to slither back into the archives. "Just tell me what you're looking for."

"I need information on Devaronian politics..." The Amaran scanned the rank and file army of glowing shelves apprehensively. There were so many files...
"Any-source will work really." Ekerin tacked on. The archives never seemed big to him until he had to find something. Oh sure, there was a librarian, but asking her in this instance would be cheating on the mission Sellah had given him... Or something.
So he looked to the blue Hutt for guidance before slowly meandering on, waiting for Carlando to adjust his course.

"Devaronian politics.." Carlando muttered. "Off the top of my head, I remember that only females are allowed to participate in politics. I think you're wanting their species file." He held out one hand, and tugged at the Force. In the D section of the archives, one datapad wobbled off its shelf and fell to the floor. Carlando blinked. "Frak. That didn't go as planned.."

OoC// Thou must excuse meh shoddy use of NPC. =3
While Ekerin's eyes couldn't see the holobook, his large, triangular ears heard the soft clatter as gravity settled it on the floor, and he guessed at its general location.
"Ummmm... I'll just go get that now." With that, the Amaran loped off briskly, blue eyes scanning the aisle floor for the fallen file.
Eventually, Ekerin found the mistreated holobook.
It was being held by the Jedi librarian. She did not look happy to see him.
“You do realize that assembling the information in this datapad has taken years of effort by numerous Jedi Knights and Masters? Not to mention the careful organizational standard past librarians and myself have worked to keep in pristine condition.”
Ekerin shuffled uncomfortably under the librarian’s stony Gorgon-like gaze.
“Now that you have tarnished this with your vexatious tomfoolery and blatant disregard for Jedi resources, you will take me to your master, so I can let them know exactly what their padawan, and I use the term loosely, for I’ve seen fitter examples of Jedi among the younglings, has been up to in my archives.”
“But—“
“No excuses. What is your name?”
“…Ekerin Tavres.”
“Come come, we have people to see.”
The disgruntled librarian lovingly set the holobook back into place on the shelf before grabbing Ekerin’s ear, an easy task due to their large size, and starting to pull him out of the archives.
The Amaran managed to give Carlando a subtle shrug, a baleful look, and a roll of his ocean blue eyes before being pulled through the doorway of the archives and out of the Hutt’s sight.
(End.... Thread?)
