Description/role:
A sleek medium-sized capital ship, the Boomslang was conceived of as a first-strike/blitz weapon for planetary invasions. It is unusual in that the ventral side of the ship is far more heavily armed and armored than the dorsal side. This design makes the ship more vulnerable to attack from one side, and thus somewhat unsuited for pitched ship battles in space. The ship's bridge is located near the front of the vessel, viewports angled slightly downwards.
Thanks to its strong structural design and large repulsorlift banks, the Boomslang is one of the largest, if not the largest, capital ships that can operate effectively within most planetary atmospheres. In an invasion, instead of being restricted to staying in orbit and bombarding the planet surface from high above, a group of Boomslangs will drop out of hyperspace, and before the planet can effectively mobilize their defenses and raise the power-draining planetary shield, immediately drop into the atmosphere and towards the ground.
From this new vantage point they are able to effectively bring their heavy turbolaser batteries to bear on important targets such as airfields, ground troops, power and shield generators, all the while being below the field of fire of the heaviest planetary defense guns, which are designed to shoot at large ships in orbit. Being between the planet surface and the enemy fleet also makes it more difficult for them to be targeted by the guns of the larger ships above, as misses would strike the very planet that they are tasked to defend. The use of Boomslangs is also an extremely effective fear tactic, as defending troops are often terrified by the huge half-kilometer ships suddenly dropping out of the skies, casting massive shadows over the ground, hovering in the air in the same way bricks don't.
Boomslangs can be configured to either carry starfighters to defend themselves against enemy interceptors, or gunboats to increase their ground attack effectiveness. Large hangar bays opening on the dorsal side of the ship allow the carrier to launch its ships very quickly in a swarm.
A Boomslang strike is almost always quickly followed by the arrival of a large, more traditional fleet, with the size and firepower to finish securing the planet after the Boomslangs have softened its defenses.
