Description/role:
In 3695 BBY, Rendili StarDrive designers came up with plans for a fast and durable ship to carry cargo into dangerous zones, a blockade runner. The concept looked very good on paper, and they pursued it with full confidence, certain it would have appeal. The prototype was made and checked out, and thirty were under production when the problems began to emerge. The Republic military had no interest in additional cargo ships, and the major corporations didn’t conceive of any possible blockades to break. A few isolated buyers expressed interest and picked them up, but in the end Rendili was left with almost fifty ships no one wanted. Half of them were sold off as scrap at a loss, and the remainder fell into short range roles hauling goods.
The design never lived up to its intended purpose or its potential.
The design itself is straight forward. The upper deck consists of four sections. Forward is the flight deck, a large room with a forward facing screen. There are consoles for helm, navigation, flight engineering, and a command chair for the skipper. To the aft of that is a corridor running down into the body of the ship. It diverges into two, one corridor down the port side and one starboard. In between the two is a large common room and galley fused together. In each wing are three rooms (all but the Captain’s having double bunks) and one refresher. To the aft is the engine room and a lift down to the cargo bay.
The bottom of the ship, equivalent to two stories, is a cargo bay, a very large one with ramps that fold down for unloading on each side. With the right equipment, the ship can be unloaded extremely rapidly.
