The Basilik's reactor was as big as any Io’an had ever seen. Bigger, in fact — he didn’t often spend his days aboard military battlecruisers. “It’s huge.” Some awe touched his voice as he craned his head up. The chamber’s far in nearly faded to darkness, cast in deep shadows from the roiling heat within the reactor’s compromised housing.
“Warning: Abnormal radiation levels detected. Warning: Abnormal radiation levels detected. Warning...” Io’an frowned, brow furrowed, and cut his suit’s audible warning system. A flashing yellow icon in the lower-left remained.
Not enough to be a threat, he thought, jogging off to his assigned panels at Janus’ instruction. The suits could provide some limited protection against radiation--enough to survive a trip into the void. But once that’s back to full strength... Io’an cast a worried glance to the reactor. “We can’t delay here once we get this up and running,” he said. He rather doubted anyone would want to. Unless they wanted radiation to kill them instead of that damn disease.
He was vaguely aware of something that wasn’t right, of constant, crowded movement on the walls. A hard swallow and he ignored it, focusing instead on the task at hand.
The systems were familiar enough--prior work for the Hutts carried some benefits--but slow, lurching. Damaged he wondered, reaching into one of the pouches on his waist. He produced a small datapad, designed to link with his suit’s HUD, and connected it to the computer banks.
A small vector art dragon, bronze with a jet of red and orange flame roaring from its open maw, flashed across his HUD as his system booted and overrode the panels’ security software. A sea of endless blue text scrolled up the datapad’s screen.
With time of the essence, Io’an decided to forego the lighter touch in favor of forcing the systems to do his bidding. “Something’s up with these systems,” he remarked to Janus. “At least over here. Something might’ve got screwed up in the battle.”
SYSTEM CONNECTION SUCCESS
Io’an grinned in spite of himself. He flipped through the options, quickly found the power commands for engineering and rerouted as much as he could to the power generator.
A deep whir shook the floor. The generator began to thrum loudly, the glow from its broken housing growing brighter.
”Warning: Radiation levels increasing. Warning: Radiation levels increasing. Warn-”
“Shut up,” Io’an muttered as he killed the audible warning. “That’s one down!” he yelled as he started to repeat the process for the habitat power system.
