"There's a time for talk, and a time for action. I prefer the latter." - Jedi Knight Macen Oran Full Name • Macen Oran (pronounced May-son Or-ahn) Race • Human Birthplace • Ord Mantell Age • 40 (born 3631 BBY) Gender • Male Sexuality • Heterosexual Faction • Jedi Order, The Galactic Republic Concept • A Jedi Watchman (Rank 3) whose realm of protection is the Core Worlds, though he sees deployment throughout the galaxy to root out injustice. Macen is a lightsaber specialist and master of forms IV and V, revered as a maverick and unconventional, yet highly effective, diplomat and warrior. Languages • Basic, Rodese, and Sullustese (understands others through the Force) Assets •
Appearance Face Claim • Jake Gyllenhaal Height & Weight • 6'1", 209 lbs. Overall Looks • The most striking feature of Macen's appearance is his large, rounded eyes that he inherited from his mother, Runa. A dark brown in color, upon closer inspection one can find flecks of gold or hazel. Despite only being 38 years old, he possesses a prominent "worry mark" between his eyebrows that is evident whenever he shows concern or frustration. This is due to his animated facial expressions, and he is prone to raising his eyebrows when showing surprise or shock. He has a slim face and a strong jaw, with his overall demeanor being one of inquisitiveness and confidence, never one to shake or stir in the face of potential danger, and certainly not showing fear in his features. He keeps his wavy hair long and relatively untamed. It is a dark brown in color. Summarily, most describe him as handsome. He has a scar on his right chin from a fall off of a speeder during a mission some time ago, made more evident by his nigh-constant stubble adorning his jawline. Physically, Macen is the pinnacle of human health. He has a powerful and lean build honed by years of intense physical training and endless hours spent practicing lightsaber techniques, as well as hand-to-hand combat. As such, he is well suited to long, arduous journeys, and his physicality renders him capable of fighting for hours on end before tiring. Especially considering his physical fitness alongside heavy usage of Force abilities such as Valor and Speed, he is capable of performing feats of strength and dexterity well beyond that of a normal human being. He stands at just over six feet tall, and is just over two-hundred pounds of wiry muscle. Typically, Macen will wear his homewoven Jedi robes that are a cream color, over which he wears a brown cloak with ornate swirling designs stitched into the fabric. During combat or in situations where he knows he will be fighting (or whenever he can get away with it, adverse to tradition as he is), he sheds the cloak and the robes, opting instead to don a form-fitting, minimalistic tunic that allows the greatest freedom of movement which his speciality in Ataru necessitates. As he is prone to occasionally going undercover per his duties, his general attire will vary on a case by case basis. Personality Profile On a personal level, Macen is very outspoken, brash, somewhat hot-headed, and what some may even describe as confrontational. However, this is mainly towards authority figures, with the only individuals he will ever take orders from without much question being members of the Jedi Council. He hides a heroic nature beneath his guise of brazenness, as he will often thrust himself into harm's way to help others in need. Perhaps derivative of his cavalier behavior and utter lack of any sense of self-preservation, he is much more willing to put a permanent end to any he views as evil than most other Jedi. This has been met with scrutiny from his former Master and members of the Council, though one thing they can never deny is his reasoning behind such actions and the situations in which he performs them, often saving another's life or even several lives in the process. As a younger male in his Padawan days, he was very prone to outbursts of passion and displays of self-loathing whenever he wouldn't measure up to his own oft-unrealistic standards. This heinous disregard for his own worth, while normally a negative quality to have in a budding Jedi, had the converse effect of furthering his own personal development. As a result of his anger and disdain, he would often meditate and train on his less-than-desirable traits more than other Padawans, leading to him eliminating nearly all of them. In kind, he was also able to all but erase his anger; although frustration is still often evident in his tone and actions, he very rarely lets it dictate who he is, merely letting it out as a reminder of his own humanity. Likewise, his control and acceptance of his own anger has had the bonus effect of making him a very difficult individual to draw toward the Dark Side. Macen has studied and meditated countless hours on the meaning of the Force and the constant struggle between Light and Dark. Motivated, perhaps, by the teachings of his Master, Luther Varn, and by the higher questions of the universe as a whole, Macen holds a plethora of views on the Jedi, Sith, and the Force itself. Pertaining to Jedi, Macen disagrees with their role as general "peacekeepers"; in fact, he views the Jedi as warriors. Despite the small distinction, it generally leads to him taking a more direct approach to issues and coming to the aid of those in need with less hesitation. His actions are reminiscent of the classical "Chivalrous Knight". Although he follows and obeys the Jedi Code (to the best of his ability), he also follows a personal code where he will not leave his allies behind regardless of the situation. His beliefs follow a path similar to that of the "Living Force"; he often follows his instincts regardless of present evidence, and tends to be mindful of the future but more occupied with the present. He also believes that confidence in the face of a threat is key, and to show fear is to expose yourself to your enemy. Although many may view his attitude as over-confident and arrogant, he simply puts on this ploy to fool his enemies into believing that he is full of himself. His former Master, Luther Varn, noticed this, commending its usefulness as a strategy. Of course, this clearly indicates that he does feel the very human emotion of fear at times, but is simply adept at masking it. When it comes to his emotions, Macen is a difficult person to read, and he is fiercely independent. When faced with adversity or even sorrow, he masks these feelings behind humor and his stubbornness causes him to internalize most issues to his own detriment. His views aside, Macen is as nice a person as anyone could hope to meet and is generally well-rounded. Despite his love for dueling and studious ways, he is anything but serious when it comes to general conversation. In fact, Macen is known for being quite friendly and talkative, and maintains a positive relationship with virtually everyone he knows well. Hand in hand with his amiability, Macen has a tendency to sometimes be a bit too trusting. Although cautious at first around strangers, he takes beneficial actions at face value, and often won't realize he's been duped until well after the fact -- a trait he is aware of and despises. At a baseline, he is a passionate, heroic, rebellious, and extroverted Jedi. With his birth never officially recorded, and thus his midi-chlorian count never measured, he went unnoticed as he was raised by his mother Runa Oran for the next three years. Runa made a somewhat passable living as a table operator and chip counter at Worlport's Lady Fate Casino. Due to her many late work nights, she left Macen in the care of her good friend, the Ithorian trader Loba Rhett. Loba, a kind and gentle soul, taught Macen of the qualities of truth and justice at an early age, but warned him to never let his guard down. Being a trader on as barren a planet as Ord Mantell, Republic protection or no, had its fair share of dangers. Little did Loba know, the quick-witted Macen would take those words severely to heart for years to come. It happened by chance the Korun Jedi Knight Luther Varn was on a mission to Ord Mantell to track down an immoral and deathly efficient Bounty Hunter. The showdown, much to Luther's dismay, occurred in the open as he encountered the Bounty Hunter leaving the Lady Fate. Luckily, Luther was able to efficiently perform Cho Mai on the target, disarming him but leaving him alive. Witnessing all of this, held firmly by his mother who exited the Casino, was Macen. Instantly after the skirmish ended, Varn could sense the child's connection to the Force. It was at this point he asked to come back to Runa's home. Not wishing to disobey a Jedi, she happily obliged. He went on to explain that her son, Macen, was Force Sensitive. Not believing this at first, she invited Varn to prove it. Keeping his patience in mind, he accepted her proposal, and elected to bring the child to a local hospital to have his midi-chlorian count tested. Runa was shocked to find out that it was well above the normal, indicating Macen's connection to the Force. Although she juggled the idea of keeping him until the age six cut off, she decided that she wished him to have a better life than Ord Mantell could offer. Tearfully, but happily at the same time, she permitted Varn to bring the three year-old Macen to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. After handing the incapacitated Bounty Hunter off to the authorities, they boarded Varn's starship, and they made off to Coruscant. Macen began study of the ways of the Jedi Order and their views on the Force as early as age four. After two years of silent study, he began martial arts and melee weapon training, as well as practice with training lightsabers. Instantly, he showed an aptitude for the art, consistently ranking among the top three learners among his classmates. The entire time, his recruiter, the twenty-one year old Luther Varn, observed him as he trained and grew. Although he displayed hot-headed and disobedient tendencies, many of his instructors noted he had an exceedingly positive relationship with his fellow Younglings, and performed very well in group exercises. One of Macen's favorite instructors throughout the years was Bothan Jedi Master Raek Orad'al, with whom he developed a deep friendship that has extended into current days. Raek was Macen's main lightsaber training instructor, instilling within him the philosophies and ideals of combat that Macen still follows. Around the age of eight, he began to delve into his own personal studies on the philosophies of the Force and the Jedi code. This interest in further studying these two aspects of the Order would set the stage for his beliefs later on in life. This was also the age where his melee training become much more focused. He would often forgo time set aside for spiritual studies to retire to the training room and practice with the many training programs, requesting special permission to wield the training lightsaber unsupervised. At age ten, he became eligible to be selected to become a Padawan. Although he expressed great interest in the youngling, Jedi Knight Varn elected to wait some time before he decided whether or not he'd take him on, as Macen still displayed a degree of disobedience others did not. However, in time, Varn began to view Macen's tendency to let his attitude flare in a different light, seeing that he usually channeled it into something positive rather than negative. For example, if ever he became angry at losing a duel, rather than dwell on his anger, he channeled this emotion into his training. Taken aback by this odd level of maturity in the Force, Varn elected to take on Macen as his Padawan. Chapter 2: The Trials of the Padawan Although the two rarely interacted in the years between Macen's recruitment and selection as a Padawan, Macen still remembered the day he witnessed Varn's actions on Ord Mantell vividly. To ensure his new Padawan did not misinterpret his actions that day, Varn inquired to Macen what he would have done in that situation. Rather than give a pre-loaded response that most would, Macen pondered the question a moment. He came to the conclusion that conflict most likely would not have been avoidable, and would have acted in most likely the same way Varn would. Of the sparse missions the two embarked on together, all were diplomatic in nature. It would consist of Macen standing by and observing as Varn acted as a mediator between two parties, aiming to keep balance and peace at the same time. Although the young Macen did not grasp it at the time, he would later come to realize the importance of these observations; the weight of one person's words can sometimes have far reaching consequences and implications in the future. This also taught him that not every battle had to be won with a lightsaber. By the age of fourteen, much to Varn's suprise, Macen had excelled in learning the Shii-Cho lightsaber form. Outside of their usual practices and discussions, Macen spent even more time studying the philosophies of the Jedi code and the Force. He also developed a great deal of trust with his master, Varn, who told Macen of his origins and the interactions he had with his mother. As such, Macen felt comfortable discussing his views of the Force to Varn. Although at first Varn was wary of Macen's middle-ground view of the Force, he later came to understand and even respect that he simply saw it as good and evil. To Varn, this made Macen less susceptible to the lure of the Dark side; he did not do what he did (train for hours on end each day) for personal power, but to better defend the Order. Although this was a somewhat radical view, indeed, it did make Macen much more hard-working and less tempted by the idea of power-over-people. At the age of fifteen, Varn instructed Macen that it was time to construct his very first lightsaber to call his own. As such, they journeyed to the planet Ilum for Macen to select his very own lightsaber crystal. Varn made it a point to stress the importance of the crystal; every other component of the lightsaber could be working perfectly, but without a crystal attuned to that Jedi's own person, it may as well be another tool. He likened it to hydrospanner you obtained from a trader to a one passed down from your father to you; both serve the same purpose, but the other is worth much more than credits alone. Its value is metaphysical in nature, something that cannot be replaced. On Ilum, they traversed the crystal caves, until Macen came upon a crystal with an inner blue hue that he was attracted to. Varn pressed Macen to "not choose it simply because you like its color", but to ensure he felt like this was truly the one. Once Macen reinforced his decision to Varn, they departed, crystal in hand, back to Coruscant. Upon arriving, Varn taught Macen the basics of constructing his lightsaber. He pointed out that the physical materials were, ironically, the easiest and most simplistic part of the lightsaber construction process. The most difficult and longest part was meditating on the Force crystal and attuning it to yourself. He taught Macen, who was undoubtedly a purveyor of lightsaber combat, that the lightsaber is essentially an extension of the Jedi himself. The crystal needs to be imbued with the values and belief held by the Jedi, so that the lightsaber may better serve the Jedi's purposes when used. Macen spent his time after this constructing his lightsaber in the Temple's lightsaber construction chambers. He finished building the physical aspect of the hilt in quick fashion, eager to be able to use it.He spent much time meditating on the blue crystal he had selected from the cave on Ilum. After he had fully attuned it to his unique personality, he added it into his lightsaber. Varn was present with him when he first ignited the bright blue blade, congratulating him for journeying on his first step towards Knighthood. It was at this point in his life, at age seventeen, that Varn began to press Macen to decide what path he believe he will take when he reaches Knighthood, though he almost already knew the answer. As expected, Macen believed he would follow the combat-oriented path of the Guardian. By now, Macen had already finished his training in Shii-Cho, and Varn had begun to teach him other forms of lightsaber combat. Macen took a particular interest in the unpredictability and acrobatic tactics of Form IV, Ataru, as well as the dueling-oriented forms of Makashi and Djem So. However, Varn warned his student of the value of a good defense as well, and so begrudgingly, Macen also studied Shien, which came easily due to its close association with Djem So. Macen again devoted much of his time to dueling other Padawans and engaging in training exercises supplied by many of the simulations in the Temple. He even dueled Master Varn at times, and although he came somewhat close to besting him, he never was able to do it, due to Varn's mastery of Form III. Macen also began to re-direct his focus of practicing the Force to abilities that catered to his use of Form IV, such as Force Jump and Force Speed. Mastering these abilities only reinforced the great dexterity and agility he displayed while dueling. Around age eighteen, Macen developed the first true brush with love he would have in his life. It was with a fellow Padawan, two years his senior, a girl named Alaya Tessin. She had planned to undertake the Jedi Trials in coming years, and the two of them began to form a strong bond with one another. Varn noticed the increasing amount of time they spent together, and warned his apprentice not to give into the temptations of love, reminding Macen that the Jedi observed no such attachments. Denying he felt any such thing for Alaya, Macen continued to build upon his relationship with her. The only display of passion they ever experienced together was a brief moment of weakness during a training session, wherein they embraced and kissed each other under Coruscant's moonlight. However, afraid that their relationship would jeopardize her future with the Order, Alaya ended their affair. A solemn year passed for Macen, as he was now more driven than ever before to continue his training, brushing shoulders with the Dark side on several occasions. A year passed this way, and Alaya went on to undertake her Jedi Trials. However, tragedy struck when during a solo mission she was defeated and killed by a bounty hunter. When hearing of this news, Macen confronted his master, inquiring as to whether all Trials could end this way. Varn delivered the cold truth; many perished in their attempts to become Jedi Knights, as the Trials could be quite deadly. He encouraged his padawan to stay positive, however, as there were any number of ways one could pass the Trials and become a Jedi Knight, all up to the discretion of the Council. Around the age of twenty, Macen began spending a great deal of time with Jedi Knight Selia Fain. She was one of the greatest duelists in the Temple, and he sought her out for training in lightsaber combat. Of the Makashi and what little Niman he has practiced, Selia is the one who taught this to him. Unknown to him at the time, this time spent training would be the beginnings of an alliance that stretched throughout his years as a Knight. However, despite the ease of which he was progressing through his training, the rapid approach of the Trials still loomed over his head. Although he felt reassured due to the training he received from Selia and the guidance of his master, he was constantly reminded of the fate that befell Alaya. With this thought in mind, Macen began to prepare for his coming trials. Varn took the time to explain them more in depth to his apprentice. The Trials began with the Trial of Skill. Varn expressed no great deal of concern for his padawan over this one, understanding that skill was one trait Macen had much of. However, he went on to explain the trials of Courage and Flesh. These two, Varn said, usually were the most dangerous and deadly the hopeful Knight would encounter. Varn made it clear to express that there were no set rules for each Trial; the Council could decide how to judge each one as they saw fit. Sometimes, two or more Trials could be passed because of one single event, though this was exceedingly rare. Courage was self-explanatory, but the Trial of Flesh was understandably less so. Varn explained that it did not mean mutilation of the body, but sometimes of the mind, such as through a terrible loss. Then, there was the Trial of Spirit, a self-journey into the depths of one's own psyche to root out and face the fears and true feelings they feel. Varn explained that this Trial, in a warped way, could be the most dangerous of them all, sometimes leading padawans to madness, and as such a Master was required to be present during the meditation in case this occurs. A year of training under Selia and Varn continued, and Macen was officially ready to undertake his trials whenever he pleased. Varn, wanting to make his Trial of skill as interesting as possible, elected to duel to his padawan and have the Council decide if this sufficed. Varn, a master of Soresu, the defensive Form III, had historically been able to best and outlast his apprentice in all of their spars. As such, he considered it the ultimate test of skill to see if his apprentice would finally be able to best him in open combat. The two of them gathered in the dueling chamber, the members of the Jedi Council as well as other Masters there to witness the duel. They walked five paces each away from each other. Both removed their hilts from their belts, and ignited their lightsabers, Macen a blue blade, Varn a green blade. Not out of arrogance or spite, Varn smiled at his apprentice and nodded. The Council members signaled for the duel to begin. Varn dropped back in the defensive Form III stance, Macen taking on the heavily offensive Form IV. Utilizing the Force to assist his moves, he leaped over to Varn, and the duel began. The duel began with Macen battering the defenses of Varn, yet Varn took the blows head on, standing his ground. It was only at this point that Macen halted his assault, and assessed his Master's strategy of waiting for an opening. Surprising Varn, Macen took the Form V stance of Djem So. They circled each other for a time, before locking blades once more. Now, with a much more defensive but aggressive approach, the duel began to turn to Macen's favor. Countering his Master's attacks with heavy blows, he began to slowly pick apart Varn's defenses. The duel decisively ended when a particularly powerful blow knocked Varn back. By unanimous decision, the Council declared Macen's Trial of Skill passed, and Varn congratulated his apprentice for taking the first step on his journey to Knighthood. It was soon after this that Varn received word of another mission they were to be sent on together. On the world of Onderon, there was a man whose farm was raided by unknown assailants. It was up to Varn and Macen to get down to the bottom of the attacks. Thankful for the respect Luther was showing him and excited for the prospect of a real mission, Macen could hardly contain his excitement. They boarded the next transport off of Coruscant to Onderon. He had heard stories of the world of Onderon, mainly of its beauty but also of its danger. Numerous beasts of all kinds roamed its surface. Also - and perhaps more importantly - Onderon had a shaky history with the Republic and the Jedi Order, not taking to their involvement in planetary affairs too kindly. Still, the farmer requested their help personally, so he wasn't too worried about the implications of a Jedi investigation. When Macen and Luther arrived on the farm, what they were greeted with was horror, as the farmer and his family, save for one boy, had been slaughtered. Their bodies were riddled with burns and sears that could only be inflicted by one thing; a lightsaber. They had but a mere moment to process this information when they heard a cry for help. Turning, there was the young boy, his wrist clamped tightly by a large man in a black robe and a sinister looking metallic mask. It was a Sith, a Dark Jedi. Macen had never encountered one before, and nothing could prepare him for how it felt to be in his presence; overwhelming, uncontainable darkness and pure power. At the same time, whatever fear he felt was overwritten by the boy's screams. Luther attempted persuasion, but his honeyed words fell upon deaf ears. The Sith, who Macen would later learn was a Warrior of renown within the ranks of the Sith Empire named Jathar Mox, ignited his sickly red lightsaber, preparing for battle as he pushed the boy aside. Seeing as diplomacy was no longer an option, Macen and Luther, too, drew their weapons. The farmhouse was filled with red, blue, and green shades of light as they stared each other down. Luther's words resonated within Macen's ears; "Remember your training." Without time for another word, the Sith was engaged in combat with the duo. Flashes and brilliant sparks emitted from the blades as they collided like fireworks. Despite the best efforts of the duo, Mox seemed to read their movements like a book, parrying and blocking each attempted attack as though he weren't even trying. Upon being parried once more, Mox blasted Macen backward with a Force Push, sending him into the wall. Disoriented, he was forced to watch as Luther locked blades with Mox. It was a fair fight for the beginning seconds, but eventually, Mox's mastery of Djem So overpowered Luther's own Soresu form. Macen regained his senses, but all too late... The eventful moment of the duel happened when Luther attempted a crossing blow that was parried by Mox, who then redirected his saber downward viciously into Luther's midsection. He was bisected instantly by the attack before Macen's very eyes. His saber deactivated as he fell to his knees, then slumped to the floor. Stricken with grief instantly, Macen nearly lost his focus, but was lucky to regain it as Mox turned his attention back to the fighting. He parried a blow, stumbling backward before replacing his footing. More blows were exchanged, with Mox seeming to gain the upper hand after he beat Macen into a kneeling position. While still blocking attacks, Macen took one last look at Luther's body and at the scared boy. Mustering his courage, he released his valor in the form of a mighty outburst of telekinetic force, sending Mox sliding along the ground on his feet. Macen went on the offensive, flipping toward Mox with a devastating overhead slash, nearly catching him off guard. With more acrobatic and unorthodox attacks, Macen seemed to be gaining the upper hand. As the battle wore on, however, and Macen grew tired, Mox took advantage; exploiting an opening, he slashed vertically at Macen, catching his saber's hilt at the top, cutting it in two. The saber deactivated and fell to the floor in two pieces. Rather than panic, Macen remained calm; he held out his hand and called his fallen master's lightsaber to his hand. Activating it, he dropped back into Djem So, locking blades with Mox once again. They exchanged hefty blows, knocking each other back at points, but both stood strong until with a final push of strength and determination, Macen knocked Mox's lightsaber from his hands. As it flew across the room, Macen wasted no time in then slashing down Mox's torso, slaying the Sith Warrior instantly. As his body fell, Macen panted, deactivated his lightsaber, and fell to his knees. He was only brought back to reality by the boy who came by his side and hugged him. Macen then brought the boy back to his next of kin, the uncle who posted the investigation request. After returning to the Temple, Macen was lauded for his heroics and for his performance in battle against the Sith. The Council elected to forgo the Trials of Courage, Flesh, and Insight, leaving only the Trial of Spirit for Macen to complete. He retreated to the meditation chamber, where, while being overseen by a Jedi Master, he meditated on his inner self. It was to his surprise that he saw only a blue silhouette of his body, which sat in front of him and meditated as well. After hours of pure inward thinking, Macen understood that he had already faced his shortcomings after winning the duel against Mox. His Trials complete, Macen was officially granted the title of Jedi Knight, taking on the vocation of a Watchman of the Order, a defender and diplomat like his former Master.. Chapter 3: Knighthood and Present Life Macen's life after the duel continued on. He constructed a new lightsaber for himself, venturing all by his lonesome to an ancient crystal cavern in the Ziost tundras, where he discovered a Sigil crystal. With it, he constructed a new, more personalized lightsaber with a single, yellow blade, calling it the last step in his ascension to Jedi Knighthood. He began to carry out missions of varying purpose for the Jedi Council, from diplomacy, to recovery, to acting as a peacekeeper. For three to four years after his initial promotion, Macen undertook a variety of solo study lessons, furthering his knowledge and understanding of the Jedi Order and the force by himself. He honed his combat skills through training simulations, meditation, and copious spars, eventually mastering Form IV and Form V, gaining lesser knowledge in all the other forms. He also delved into his former Master Luther Varn's records and collection of holocrons to study upon and write about. Relatively speaking, Macen "mellowed out" during this time period, though he never truly lost his flair that made him stand out so much among his peers. Although he excelled in learning new ideas and concepts, Macen never did venture out to become a teacher of any kind; in fact, he disliked preaching, and so is never one to give out much advice. His lack of taking on an apprentice is what allowed him to perform so many more deeds for the Order than your typical Jedi. As a result of him moving around so often, he was gifted a Liberator-class starfighter with light speed capabilities so that he could travel easier. Many of his years as a Knight passed by uneventfully enough. He devoted time to the Order, helping to extend the influence of the Jedi across the galaxy. ((( PRIOR HISTORY ENDS. UPDATED HISTORY. ))) However, all of this came to an abrupt halt with the looming threat of the Sith Empire. Even before the Jedi Order became officially involved with the war, Macen was among the first Jedi to take the fight to the Sith, participating in skirmishes among the Outer Rim leading up to the end of the war. Macen was among those Jedi who stood their ground on Coruscant, participating in a decisive Republic victory that led to an official armistice between the warring sides. After this, Macen stayed on Coruscant for a time, assisting in the recovery effort and helping to rebuild the damaged Jedi Temple where he had learned almost all he knew decades ago. However, peace was not to last; when the Archeri Chorus made itself known to the galaxy at large, Macen returned to the Jedi Council once again, in an effort to assist in the downfall of this new and colossal threat. |
