Name: Avirod Escara (His Excellency, Prince Sarala of Keren, Senator of Naboo)
Race: Human
Age: 25
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 127lbs
Appearance: Avirod’s noble Nabooan heritage has given him the chiselled, tanned good looks befitting of a Galactic Senator. His dark brown eyes, virtually black hair and olive skin give him a classic attractiveness, best described by the phrase “tall, dark stranger”.
He does however, have a peculiar dislike for his nose, the bridge of which is not perfectly straight. Whilst this is nothing out of the ordinary, Avirod is highly conscious of his nose, and will often attempt to avoid being seen in profile.
Physically, Avirod is slim and not particularly athletic. However, he is faster and more agile than he seems (although it is the speed and agility of his words that really matter in his role as a politician).
Avirod is a smart but traditional dresser, and can often be found in the latest Nabooan fashions. He does harbour a particular aversion to hats, and often forgoes them as a fashion accessory.
Birthplace: Keren, Naboo
Occupation: Senator – Chommel Sector
Rank: Avirod is an active member of the Interspecies Advisory Committee. As such, it is his duty to fight for the end of interspecies wars and prejudices, often travelling to far-off Worlds to advocate an end to conflicts.
Bio:
The Naboo onto which Avirod Escara was born was a relatively primitive one. For the most part, her largely nomadic Human population – whose desperate flight to Naboo from the Core World ecumenopolis of Grizmallt had occurred a mere two-and-a-half centuries ago – wandered her vast plains and breathtaking mountains with little thought of settling down. As such, barely a handful of permanent Human settlements had so far been established, with the foremost of these being the political centre of Dee’ja Peak and the farming towns of Theed and Keren. It was the hereditary prince of the city-state of Keren, Prince Theej Escara, and his authoress wife, Shiraya Escara (née Visvasa), to whom Avirod was born twenty-five years ago.
Avirod’s early childhood was spent living both in the Prince’s lakeside estate and in his official Keren residence, followed by an entourage of nannies and governesses, who taught and nurtured him whilst his father governed and his mother wrote. As he was very young, his lessons with the governesses were basic, consisting mainly of such valuable life skills as simple mathematics, Galactic Basic (language and literature) and basic etiquette. Nevertheless, they were all things a noble-born Naboo would need to succeed in life.
Despite the lack of contact with his parents, Avirod developed a strong emotional relationship with them that exists to this day, thanks manily to the care and attention with which they lavished him whenever possible. Whenever Prince Theej was able, he would take his young family to his retreat in the Lake Country, where they separated themselves briefly from servants, courtiers and advisors – save a small contingent of devoted, and more importantly discreet, bodyguards – and simply enjoyed one another’s company. It was during these stays at his father’s retreat that Avirod also formed a strong relationship with his sister Essa, eight years his senior. Every evening, without fail, she would read to him from a holobook of ancient Grizmallt legends – something that constant social engagements prevented her from doing whilst in Keren.
When he reached the age of six, his father made the decision to send him to Dee’ja Peak, wanting the young boy to receive an excellent standard of political education. It was also decided that the children’s mother, as a former Dee’ja Peak citizen, would accompany him along with his sister, for whom a well-orchestrated, politically tactical marriage was on the horizon. It was whilst in Dee’ja Peak that he signed up to the newly expanded Refugee Relief Movement and consequently spent many of his school holidays away from home, engaged on fulfilling – if harrowing – aid projects. When not away from home, the young Avirod (or Avi to his friends) studied hard and achieved exceptional grades, as well as joining the up-and-coming Legislative Youth Programme.
During his time in the LYP, he experienced the joy of his first offworld journey – to Hanna City on Chandrila. It was here that he engaged in a month-long mock Senate trial, voting “Yes” on a proposal to disband numerous aspects of the Republic’s military – needless to say, the proposal was not a popular one, and Avi was one of only five youths who voted affirmatively. The subsequent mockery and minor beating that resulted from his non-conformity did nothing to discourage the young boy’s determination to see through his peaceful beliefs.
It was after returning from this mock trial – now aged eight – that Avi was to take part in what was perhaps the most harrowing RRM project of his life. A small planet on the Outer Rim had been devastated by civil war; Men, women and children had all been brutally killed – or worse, maimed and left to die a slow, agonising death in the baking heat of the world’s slowly expanding sun. The young Naboo worked tirelessly with his companions – some of whom were older than him, some of whom were younger – to provide food and medical aid to those victims who were likely to survive, and much-needed comfort to those who weren’t. Needless to say, the majority of the war-torn inhabitants of the world fell safely into the latter category. The experience left him shaken up and a little sickened, but the horrors he had seen at such a young age could do little but affirm his belief that peace and justice were the highest goal to which the Galaxy could aspire.
By his ninth birthday, Avirod had joined up to the ever-popular Apprentice Legislature. Whilst taking part in the programme – which was much more career-based than the Legislative Youth Program – he enjoyed the benefits of many further offworld excursions to planets such as Alderaan and Thesme. Here he made friends with many more aspiring Senators, and formed bonds that would prove invaluable in his later career. On one Apprentice Legislature workshop on the planet of Alderaan, he formed a close friendship with the older prospective senator for that planet – a friendship that would remain strong for many years.
It was now that he became more involved with the exciting world of Nabooan politics. He cast his first vote – albeit one in a small, perhaps inconsequential local election – shortly after his acceptance into the Apprentice Legislature, and knew at once that it was to politics, diplomacy and democracy that his path led. By age eleven, he had been accepted as a fully-fledged Apprentice Legislator, a role that took him away from home even more than had the RRM.
It was whilst he served as an Apprentice Legislator that Avirod’s first visit to the Galactic Capital, Coruscant, took place. He, along with six other Apprentices, was given a tour of some of the most important political locations in the Galactic Republic; a tour that was to culminate in an audience with the then Supreme Chancellor. They visited such locations as the old Senate Hall, the new Senate Rotunda and the offices of various influential Galactic Senators. It was during the next three years that Avirod would spend much time on the capital, learning the ins and outs of life as a Galactic Senator and preparing for the career that awaited him. Sadly, it was also during these years that a practically insurmountable marriage-related feud between his father and his sister would lead to Prince Theej disowning Essa, leading to certain complications in the devoted siblings’ relationship.
By his fourteenth birthday, he had become a well-known figure in Nabooan politics – whilst still managing to provide secretive aid to his sister and her young family-, with many anticipating the day he would enter interstellar politics. His overwhelming popularity was due to his early championing of the rights of common people. Despite his noble heritage and almost impeccable standing within Naboo’s primitive feudal system, he was – thanks in part to his mother – a staunch believer in the idea that the only reason certain people have power is so that they may protect those who do not. His ongoing dedication to the Apprentice Legislature (as well as to the less formal Legislative Youth Programme and to the RRM) meant that he was trusted and well liked by many.
In the following years, Avi continued to press the then High Queen, Queen Ummida, to relax some of the restrictions she had placed on the poorer members of Nabooan society. He called for many reductions in the taxation of such people, advocating instead higher taxation on those such as his own family who had the money to spare. Despite his pressure, Ummida refused to give in, and remained firm in her oppression until the imminent end of her reign.
Around the time of his seventeenth birthday, Queen Ummida passed away, and, as Prince of Keren, Avirod's father became a candidate for the next monarchy. After mustering the support of a large majority of the Nabooan population, Theej Escara was elected High King of Naboo, taking on the regnal name His Majesty, High King Benadu of Naboo. As his son, Avirod assumed the now vacant position of Prince of Keren, and took over the role of the day-to-day governing of the town and State of Keren.
Over the following years, King Benadu ruled as a compassionate and loving King, doing all in his power to keep the tentative peace between Naboo’s nomadic tribes, her city-dwelling townsfolk and her handful of indigenous species. During this time, he sent his son Avirod on many diplomatic missions with the intention of raising Naboo’s profile in the Galactic Republic. It was these journeys to the various other worlds of the Republic that gave the young Prince a taste for the mystery and intrigue of interstellar politics.
Trips to peoples and worlds such as the Sauvax of Leritor, the Krish and the Tammuz-an, led to the forging of many strong political bonds between Naboo and her Mid Rim neighbours. As Naboo was an unusual human-colonised Mid Rim world, many species treated Avirod and his entourage with a great deal of suspicion – sometimes even open hostility – but soon it became clear that the growing boy was a skilled orator and diplomat, and that few could remain hostile in the face of his well reasoned arguments. It was during these excursions that Avi further developed his love of diplomacy and the peaceful resolution of conflict – now being able to put it into practice far more than he had in the LYP or the Apprentice Legislature. Throughout this time, Avirod and his mother Shiraya continued their traditional family retreats to the Lake Country, even if King Benadu’s royal duties and Essa’s isolation from the family prevented either of them from attending.
His other passion – or rather his compassion – came to the fore after an aid mission to a planet whose unstable ring of asteroids was beginning to fall to its lush surface. The resulting holocaust of fire and rock displaced many families, but aid workers from all over the Republic managed to provide safety and comfort to those in need – often having to transport whole towns offworld to find medical care or proper shelter. After this harrowing – albeit rewarding – experience, Avirod vowed that he would do all he could to make the lives of every single being as safe and as free as possible.
With the mysterious disappearance of Naboo’s senator in the eighth year of King Benadu’s reign, Avirod entreated his father to allow him to represent his Homeworld on the Galactic Senate. The king agreed, and Avirod was granted the title of His Excellency, Prince Sarala of Keren, Senator of Naboo. The twenty-four-year-old Prince was overjoyed at his appointment, and dedicated himself to serving Naboo with pride and with passion.
One of his most vivid memories of his first day as a Senator was the sheer size of the Senate Chamber. He marvelled at the confusion of the hustle and bustle of thousands upon thousands of Senators, all calling out for their individual voices to be heard. He watched in awe the silent alliances and feuds that were both instantly recognisable and minutely complex. He fell in love.
Within his first week, the Senator for Alderaan (his friend from the Apprentice Legislature) had taken the young politician under his wing. The two, along with an entourage of aides, attendants and bodyguards, embarked upon a trip to a small world, torn by war and poverty, attempting to beseech the leaders of two opposing factions to lay down their arms and resume peace and democracy. The leaders did not listen, and the two Senators barely managed to escape with their lives as the world’s surface was rendered all but inhospitable by thousands of illegally bought biological weapons, released from high orbit.
Despite their failure, Avirod now knew that it was here that his heart lay: in the prevention of war and prejudice and the promotion of peace, freedom and democracy. He immediately joined the small but influential Interspecies Advisory Committee, hoping to achieve his goal of having some effect on Galactic Peace.

Avirod Escara - or, as was his usual title whilst on the Galactic Capital, His Excellency, Prince Sarala of Keren, Senator of Naboo - smiled to himself as he surveyed that very same Galactic Capital out of the viewport of the Hammerhead-Class Cruiser that was bearing him back to his first love: the Galactic Senate.
As the red and white liveried craft touched down on a colossal, military-sized landing pad, Avirod gathered his robes and stood up from his desk, hastily collecting the myriad data pads over which he had been poring for the last few hours. Handing them to his aide, he opened his study door and strode down the corridor, escorted by a contingent of red-uniformed soldiers.
At the foot of the ship’s landing pad, he was met by a group of Senators from his committee: the Interspecies Advisory Committee. Shaking each of their hands in turn, he grinned, almost childishly; glad to be back on Coruscant, doing what he knew he should do.
A Gran senator by the name of Eeth Cheen grinned back at him, grasping his hand tightly.
”Senator Sarala! It is such a pleasure to be once more within your company!”
Avirod nodded graciously and returned the compliment. Then however, the grin fell from his face and his deep brown eyes took on a businesslike fire.
”Thank you, Senator Cheen. However, we have little time for pleasantries. Everyday Senators Halka and Poskell push further for the “Restriction of Alien Control in the Republic Military Bill”, and every day that they do, is one day that we have failed to end the prejudice that plagues our Galaxy. We must retire to my office. There we can discuss these matters over a glass of Amberwine.”
This finished, his eyes took on their childish glint once more.
“After you, Senator Roshii.”
