Discovery
Born on the planet of Ornax, Garnet was the son of Tosaph who he had branched off of, which was how Shards were naturally born, growing off one another. The Shard were stationary crystal creatures that never moved but always thought. Slow contemplative thought was how they spent there time always, for there was nothing else to do. For nearly 200 years, Garnet and the rest of the Shards that made up his cluster were undisturbed until a ship crash landed on Ornax. This ship belonged to a merchant by the name of Albert Surdaz pursued by bounty hunters hired by a former employer to whom Albert owed money. In a desperate attempt to escape capture, the merchant had made a hyperspace jump but was shot before entering hyperspace, throwing off the drive and causing him to crash land on Ornax.
The merchant saw the Shard but didn't realize what they actually were. Never before had the Republic set foot on the planet and if they did, they never realized that the crystals there were actually sentient. Albert saw these crystals and as most merchants would do, attempted to collect samples to sell when he was able to get back to civilization. The merchant grabbed a instrument from his vessel and began to pry Garnet from the cluster. Unable to communicate directly with the merchant, the Shard was unable to do anything as he was entirely removed and was taken back to Albert's ship.s
Off Planet
Unable to do anything, Garnet only watched as the merchant slowly began to repair his ship. It took about two weeks to do so, the man eating from rations he had stored on the ship. From time to time, Albert would handle Garnet and talk about how the "crystal" so the merchant had dubbed him, would make him rich. If he could sell Garnet he could come back and get more, his wealth would grow for discovering such a beautiful planet. When finally the man was able to get his ship to work properly, Albert left Ornax and thus taking Garnet from his homeworld and a uncertain future. The Shard was placed in a bag that sat in the co-pilots chair, unable to see as they traveled around the galaxy. The merchant and Garnet's time together however was cut short. Albert landed on the planet of Tatooine and was killed by a bounty hunter that had nearly gotten him all those weeks ago before the hyperspace jump. Unfortunately, the blaster the hunter had used had struck the instrument panel of the ship and destroyed all records of Albert's whereabouts.
While searching the dead merchants ship for useful items, the bounty hunter uncovered Garnet and claimed the "crystal" as its own, the swirling pulses of light that were Garnets thought signals interested the bounty hunter. Dubbing the crystal its good luck charm, the bounty hunter put the Shard in a bag that he kept on its belt. Unable to do anything like it had always, Garnet just watched and waited inside the bounty hunters pouch.
Jedi Encounter
For several years, Garnet was the bounty hunters prize. Whenever the bounty hunter would go to a cantina, he would draw the Shard out as a way to impress his viewers. Coming up with wild tales of how he retrieved the "crystal" so far to even say he found it in the stomach of a rancor he had slain, it was more then enough to gain the bounty hunter his share of drink and women. As usual Garnet watched with interest, taking in the sights he saw. The Shard funnily enough did not mind the time away from home, for he had no idea that the universe was so vast and there were other creatures inhabiting it in such large numbers. While he could not feel or view as normal being did, it was still interesting to experience. His time with the bounty hunter wasn't as short lived as with Albert but it came to a end as well.
The bounty hunter had taken a mission from his crime lord boss to take out a target that had proven to be a bother to him. This trouble came in the form of a Jedi that had come to Tatooine and began to cause trouble and hindrances in the crime lords plans and activities. The bounty hunter tracked down the Jedi and stalked him for many hours. However he underestimated his adversary, never facing against a Jedi before and was dispatched easily via a lightsaber detaching his head from his neck as he attempted to trick the Jedi to think he was a civilian asking for directions.
Garnet was still in the pouch on the slain bounty hunter's belt when the Jedi took the Shard from its leather prison. The Jedi was a bearded man, wearing dark brown robes that seemed faded and old. The Shard expected the Jedi to claim it a prize as its previous owners had but was surprised when the Jedi talked to it via telepathy. The Jedi explained that it felt the Force inside the crystal and asked what it was. Stunned and baffled, the Shard explained its origin and hoped the Jedi could understand its thought pulses. To its delight he could and told the Shard they would talk further when they returned to his home.
Realization
The Jedi took the Shard to his hovel out on the dunes. Since the crystal creature didn't require normal comforts, the Jedi placed the Shard on a pillow on his couch and fixed himself a drink. The Jedi inquired about how the Shard came to be on Tatooine, far from where it claimed to have come from. Garnet explained how the merchant had found him and taken him from his cluster, only to be slain by the bounty hunter and now was in the possession of the Jedi. Drinking slowly, the Jedi took in the story and explained that he could feel the Force in the Shard and that he believed the Shard to be Force sensitive. Not knowing what this meant for the Shard, the being asked about this meaning and the Jedi began to explain things that made the Shard's mind hurt.
He took in the information and made sense of it after thinking about it for a bit, his race adapt at it and asked the Jedi what this meant for Garnet. The Jedi introduced himself as Jedi Master Vorkal, a exiled Jedi Master whom had left the Order after the loss of his padawan to a Dark Jedi confrontation. The Old Jedi Exile offered to each the Shard about the Living Force and Garnet agreed to be his pupil. Since the Shard had no actual body, the Jedi couldn't teach Garnet to fully control the Force but they would see what the Shard was capable of.
Learning and Training
For several years, Vorkal taught Garnet about the ways of the Force. How it bound all beings and things, how it penetrated and surrounded everything and everyone. The Shard slowly understood these concepts and it wasn't until the exiled Jedi attempted to have the Shard project the Force that made it clear that the Force wasn't bound to just organic beings. Under the instruction of Vorkal, Garnet was able to levitate its own crystalline body a few feet in just a few years. By the third year under his tutelage, the Shard was able to move its body where it pleased in Vorkal's hovel. The exiled Jedi Master explained that Garnet was a marvel, something that baffled even himself sometimes. The Shard continued to learn from the Jedi Master about the Force, about the wars that had occurred before there time.
Garnet learned of the Dark side and its "possible" corrupting influences. Since his exile, Vorkal explained that while the Jedi held the dark side in a negative light, the Jedi Master believed that it was how you used the Force and its powers in some way or the other that made it good or bad. He didn't believe emotion was what drove Jedi to the dark side but what they did with that emotion. This all made sense to the Shard and decided to adopt his Masters philosophy of the Force. It wasn't the power but the actions and use of that power that made one dark or light. As Vorkal explained, if Garnet was on this path he would forever be known as a Grey Jedi. Being just a title, the Shard cared little and continued with his lessons and training. All from a stand in Vorkal's hovel funnily enough.
A Body
As year passed, his 217th year of life, only 7 years since his meeting of Vorkal, Garnet began to wonder of the possibility of a body. He had once heard his master talk once of walking machines that served as servants to the sentient races by the name of droids and thought if they could be used as shells for the Shard to inhabit. When Garnet brought this to Vorkal's attention, this sprung a interest in the exiled Jedi Master and the two set off to Mos Eisley in search of this possibility. Resting safely in Vorkal's robes, he viewed his Master enter a local droid shop via the Force. Viewing things in the Force was only another advance in the Shards training and he watched with interest as the Jedi Master persuaded the shop keeper to give them a small astromech unit for nearly free.
Bringing the droid back to the exiled Jedi's hut, the two began work immediately. Always hovering over Vorkal's shoulder, they removed a few parts from the droid. The exiled Jedi Master claimed he knew a few things about droids and was able to remove the brain of the astromech without damaging the droids workings. The droid no more then a shell, Garnet gave Vorkal instructions on how to possibly modify the droid to give Garnet control of it mechanically, not just using it as a puppet via the Force which the Shard hardly thought feasible at its current status of learning. It took over three months of salvaging parts but Vorkal deemed the astromech ready for a test drive.
The Shard placed itself in a small compartment in the droid where the processor would have been but it was heavily modified to let attach to Garnet himself to let it control the droid in all aspects from there. The time had come as Garnet used the Force to shut the compartment and attached the nodes to himself. Within minutes, the Jedi Master had a wide smirk on his face as the astromech droid came to life and began to roll about the room. Speaking telepathically with his Master, he told Vorkal that the droid was a success and that he could control the mech with ease. However a T2 astromech wouldn't allow him to use the Force as a Jedi normally would, Garnet explained. He would require a bipedal droid. The Jedi Master explained that while the Shard himself could be a conduit for the Force, the droid couldnt. The Shard was at first confused but then understood this concept, meaning he wouldnt be able to use some abilities that would limit him in more than a few aspects of the Force. However Garnet pressed on with having a bipedal droid, finding the astromech far to short and he wished to walk like man.
The next day, Vorkal went to Mos Eisley and with a little use of the Force and some credits, came back to the hovel with a HK series droid. This droid, Garnet explained would be perfect and within a few months, the Shard was in a fully controllable, bipedal droid body. The droid's chest had a compartment made in its chest that resembled the one in T2 droid. Being able to put itself inside the HK unit and attaching the node to itself, the Shard could control "HK-G" as he dubbed the body, like he did the T2.
Lightsaber Training
With the ability to walk as a normal being and a vocabulator that could transmit its thought pulses into meaningful words, Garnet was ready for advanced training. Being able to project the Force from its droid shell, the Shard was ready for lightsaber training by Vorkal's standards. Vorkal gave Garnet a lightsaber that the Jedi Master said had belonged to his lost Padawan and taught Garnet the basics of lightsaber combat. While it took awhile for the Shard to learn to fully control the HK body to move fluent enough for many lightsaber moves, he eventually caught on after a few repairs on melted arms or dents. Remembering much of what Vorkal had told and taught him when he was without a body, Garnet could reproduce many Shii-Co maneuvers. It took a year of training under Vorkal's watchful gaze until the Jedi Master was satisfied that the Shard be taught other styles of lightsaber fighting.
Bringing into account Garnet's droid body, Vorkal suggested that he learn the style of Shii-Cho and master it. It was the most basic of lightsaber styles, but his droid body limited him to be unable to use advanced techniques. Garnet would focus primarily upon the strengths of Form I, disarming the opponent in lightsaber combat and using deliberate strikes. Vorkal informed him that in the hands of a Master, Shii-Cho was a force to be reckoned with. This would inspire Garnet for years to come to mastering it.
The Death of the Master
Vorkal had grown old over the years, to the age of 80. Garnet understood that organic beings had a breaking point when they had lived for to long there own bodies would begin to shut down and there lives would end. The Shard lived to as long as a millenium so he was rather young by Shard standards himself. Vorkal's age grew increasingly apparent as the Shard continued with his training and the Master required more and more time to re-cooperate after a training session. When Garnet had become 225, this marking his 25th year away from his home planet, Vorkal told his student that he had surpassed his wildest dreams and was proud to call him a student. He told the Shard that if he had been a Jedi, he would've well received the rank of Jedi Knight and one of the best.
Garnet while not capable of full emotions, knew he would miss the old man that had become his friend and mentor when he had passed, something he knew was coming soon. One day when Garnet was meditating outside, he felt a passing of sort in the Force and knew immediately what had happened. He got up and ran to the hovel to see his Master resting peacefully in his chair, but felt nothing of him in the Force. Checking for life, Garnet knew his Master had passed on. Honoring Vorkal, the Shard took the body of his Master and buried it alongside the hovel that had been a home to them both for many years.
Taking his Masters lightsaber, Garnet left the hovel and left for Mos Eisley. Knowing that the sentients of the universe wouldn't completely understand or accept the idea of a "Jedi droid" the Shard kept the lightsaber in a special compartment in his arm and acted like a normal droid. He eventually learned how to repair and maintain his body with the "help" of the droid shopkeeper that had helped him and Vorkal get the body in the first place. Along with this he learned how to use computers, using manuals and his own Shard/droid intellect which allowed him to understand them a bit more then a normal being would.
The Lust for Knowledge <Fall to the Dark Side>
The Shard on his homeworld were nothing like a single free Shard. No, Garnet found his thought process exceeded some droids and with that power, came the insatiable need to learn everything there was in this world he had only experienced for such a short time. 25 years was nothing to Shard society and Garnet intended to learn everything about the Force along with the galaxy as whole.
His master had left behind knowledge of devices called "holocrons" that were said to contain wells of information about the Force depending on the maker of it, so his search was to start there. For months he sought out information on one, realizing that his task was a daughting one. Holocrons weren't common devices and while his first thought had been to go to Korriban, the possibility of finding one there was slim. For the time being, he put off his desire for the rare devices and started to research the past.
For some time, he was content with reading. But something told him he could do more. The Force told him he could and thus he sought out a being who could assist him in discovering knowledge. This came in the form of a Dark Jedi he encountered while exploring the tombs of Korriban. At first, the man believed him to a be simple droid and tried to dispatch him in a display of dominance. Quickly, the battle was turned when Garnet drew his lightsaber and cut the arm off the Dark Jedi, threatening to kill him if he did not answer his questions.
The Dark Jedi, known as Craxius, answered the droids questions and hinted to him that it was in fact possible to use the Force to take information from a being. If Garnet let the Dark Jedi live, he would in turn, teach him this power. The Shard carefully agreed and over the next 5 years, would learn from Craxius. It all started simple enough, going to different planets to practice on civilians and police. It took a lot of mentally ravaged beings until Garnet caught the hang of it and begun to progress rapidly, beyond his Dark Jedi partners expectations.
His already great power to learn at hyperactive rates was boosted with the ability to take the Knowledge from anyone that was weak minded enough. His favorite place to do this was on the people of Naboo, who were smarter then average. The mental attacks suffered by his victims drew the notice of the Jedi and soon enough, he and Craxius came face to face with three Jedi.
A Knight and his two Padawans, the Knight believed that Craxius was the one committing the crimes and Garnet made it clear to the Dark Jedi to remain silent, faking arrest at first. As the Jedi went to place a disabler bolt on his chassis, the Shard went into action. The Jedi Knight never saw it coming as a iron fist slammed into his face and he stumbled back, quickly followed by a ignited lightsaber. Staying true to the Jedi's training regiment, the Knight recovered and ignited his own blade but unable to stop the Shard from releasing Craxius.
The Dark Jedi now with lightsaber in hand, along with Garnet, the Jedi Knight was overpowered quickly and disabled. The Padawans suffered a similar fate and the trio was taken to a cavern by a great waterfall where Garnet meditated and thought on what he had learned. Bound and continually tortured by Craxius to keep them off balance, the three Jedi were routinely drained of knowledge by Garnet.
The Padawans were the first to become drooling neanderthals, their ability to counter Garnets powerful telepathic assaults dramatically shortened with each attempt. The Knight was harder to break, taking several moons to finally become a free flow for Garnet to absorb. Garnet learned fully of the Jedi and their customs what ever his former Master had not told him and when he found the three dribbling former Jedi of no use, he had Craxius dispatch them.
The Shard was becoming ever more powerful in the art of telepathic and telekinetic abilities, his use for lightsabers being a mere way to defend himself as he worked on his foes mental barriers. All this time, never truly believing himself to be with the dark side. The Shard craved knowledge above all things and was willing to do anything to obtain it, even slay a former lackey. As much as a help as Craxius had been, Garnet decided the Dark Jedi might be holding out on him. In the cover of night, the Shard made his move, subduing his former teacher and draining him over a course of a day of anything useful.
Believing himself only increasing the chance of Jedi discovery while staying on Naboo, Garnet donned Craxius traveling cloak and left the planet with little trouble. The Shard who had once been the student of a exiled Jedi Master had become a twisted being hellbent on discovering knowledge by any means possible. With his incredible intelligence and strengths in combat involving the mind, he was a force to be reckoned with.
However, his droid body was beginning to fail him, growing old and rusty thus he immediately began to seek out a new host. This came in the form of a company named Blackhole Industries, whom specialized in custom built armor, droids and weaponry. Using credits he obtained from his various ventures, along with the fact Craxius was fond of stealing money from those they drained, Garnet had a droid constructed for himself.
The droid had a special socket in its chest that allowed Garnet to point outward from while controling the droid. To outsiders, it would look as if the droid had a crystal lodged in its chest, but for all intent and purposes, this let Garnet practice the very ability that his former Master told him was unattainable to him when he was fully encompassed in his HK body, Force Lightning. With his body partially sticking out from his droid host, he could cast it from that point and the droid would suffer no ill effects.
With his new body and renaming himself Onyx, Garnet began to travel the galaxy in his ever continuing search for knowledge. It had been 15 years since he left his Master, making him have 38 years of training in the ways of the Force. Recalling the title of Master being bestowed on Jedi who achieved great power after the proper age, the Shard deemed himself a Master. With his steadily growing power, Garnet now searches for holocrons and more knowledge, from books or other beings. Still young by Shard standards, he had many, many years to learn what he wanted from the galaxy around him.
RP Sample:
Knowledge was power. Power was knowledge. This was absolute. No exception.
The Shard repeated this in his mind as he sat in the cantina. The music of the Bith band along with the chatter of the various patrons enjoying whatever filth was in their glass would be an cocktail of thought impeding annoyance to most beings. However Onyx was no normal being, not to the standard of this side of the galaxy. A galaxy that likely did not even know his existence. The Shard were crystalline beings, about the size of a lightsaber crystal, that lived on some far away planet that not even Onyx could trace back. Being stolen and thrown in a bag by a ignorant merchant can have that effect. Currently Onyx was the only Shard he knew that existed outside his planet and that was fine by him. Having to explain how to use a droid to function among the organics was too much a chore to him regardless.
To the patrons at the cantina he was merely a droid at a table. A very deadly droid, more deadly than any assassin hunter machine to date. A Force Sensitive creature that could end their life with a flick of a mental switch, but that wasn't his style. Onyx did not kill the for pure enjoyment of it. No he preferred to not deal with anything that did not provide him with a benefit to his mission. A mission of knowledge, a mission that drove his very existence. That mission led him to this cantina as he awaited his contact who expected to meet a "clients" droid to relay information. Relaying information was a funny way to put it.
"Hey junkbot", a voice growled in his direction.
Activating the droids motor functions with a gentle repulse from his body, the droids red eyes flared to life as it looked up. A burly looking human male stood at the end of his table.
"What the hell are you doing in my cantina. You damn things aren't allo-" the human began but was cut short as another human male appeared through the doorway nearby. Slender with rugged clothes and a unshaven face, he approached the burly man.
"Don't worry about it, Brock, its with me."
Onyx withdrew the Force that was a millisecond prior to being drove into the mans skull. Not to harm him physically, but merely to drive him away. Maybe a skull crushing headache for later as punishment for daring to speak to him in such a manner. His droid body straightened as his systems fully came to life and he placed both arms on the table. His red photoreceptors never leaving the burly human. Onyx assumed that the slender human was his contact and he was more than ready to get out of his filth pit of a organic watering hole. The Shard did not like his time being wasted.
"Just this once, Zack." Brock responded harshly, glaring at Onyx. The mans emotions were easy to read and he was beginning to come down from the anger he had previously felt. "Hows the wife and kids?"
"Saint is getting big on me, Brock. The boy is wanting to learn how to fire a blaster already. At the age of seven no less! I'll come over to the bar when I'm done with my droid friend here and fill ya in." the slender human grinned and waved away Brock as he sat down at Onyx's table.
"0N-1, I assume?" Zack quickly stated.
"Affirmative. My Master is most interested in what you know."
Onyx had no master. It was easier to lull these thick headed fools into security when a droid was merely a messenger for some unseen person. Leaning back in his seat, Zack nodded.
"My friend doesn't like to have his information given out, but your credits can loosen anyones lips. Three hundred credits, right?"
"Upon requested information retrieval, this is the amount agreed." Onyx responded, his patience beginning to wane. The other side of the bar had gotten loud as a Zabrak and a Wookie got into an argument.
"My friend is a top notch droid engineer that works with some high level people in the Republic. I think three hundred now and three hundred after would more than make up for this breach of trust between me and him. Its that or no deal." the slender humans mood darkened quickly and Onyx's eyes would have narrowed angerly if he had them.
This droid engineer was rumored to be working on a highly advanced droid. With his current host beginning to be outdated, Onyx was in need of a new one. This little creature had decided to test his patience and was drawing very close to regretting his words. This droid engineers whereabouts would be his, even if he had to leave this pest a gibbering neanderthal to do it.
"Unacceptable."
The slender human shrugged in response.
"You can go back to your Master and tell him my new conditions. We're done here."
As the human made a motion to rise up from his chair, a great invisible power gripped his body. Freezing in place and his eyes going wide with fear as every effort he made to regain control of his movement was met with heavy resistance, he was slammed back into his seat.
"What the f-"
His mouth was clamped shut and his head turned to face Onyx who still sat across the table, having yet to make any movement of his own. The Force surrounded the man and interwove with his body, giving the Shard complete control of his limbs. The time for games were over.
"I agree. We are done here." the droids cold electronic voice came as the Force continued to weave around the slender man. Without hesitance the Shard drove his power into the mans mind and the only indication of this was his eyelids going wide. Eyes devoid of emotion and his mouth going agape as his mind began to get ravaged by Onyx. The process would take little time, a few short minutes and-
"Hey Zack, we got half price Corellian brandy if you're interested!"
The burly bartender appeared to the table and Onyx was quick to respond. Not that it was Onyx actually saying anything.
"I'm fine, Brock. Thanks." the slender mans voice came out strained as Onyx forced the words from his throat and turning his head to smile at his friend with his eyes shut to hide the fact his mind was being pillaged by the droid across from him.
"Suit yourself."
As the burly man walked away, Onyx forced the contact to look back at him as the process was nearly complete. The Shard began to whisper in his mind.
"Your resistance today sealed your fate. I want you to be aware little creature that if you had held up to your end of the deal, you would be able to talk to your children again tonight. Your wife will surely miss your voice as will your mistress. With time you may regain your ability to speak, but your mind will never be the same."
With that Onyx completed his grim task. Withdrawing his power from the man, Zack's eyes began to twitch and the corner of his mouth quivered uncontrollably. Rising up from the table, the Shard left for the door. Just as he was about to leave, an alarmed voice shouted.
"We need a medic, this man is having a seizure!"
