Levin should have seen the kiss coming, yet he was entirely ignorant of her intent until suddenly her lips pressed to his. The Jedi's free hand would move to her hip, gripping it firmly yet neither pulling nor resisting her advance. She felt so frigid to the touch, mostly due to the damp weather. He knew he should stop the woman, he knew he should move away. Yet Levin found himself melding into Novus' kiss, eyes sliding closed as her hand moved up his back. His grip would affirm on the woman, shamefully enjoying the press of her body against his.
Then she pulled back, Lev noting the light blush that bloomed across soft cheeks. Levin's blood had drained from his face the second he returned the kiss, certain that if anything he would look paler than before Novus pressed for him.
“For luck. Now I'm ready. Let's go.”
There is no luck, there is the Force...
The fragment of the Jedi Code wafted in the back of Levin's mind. Yet by that very logic, it wasn't luck that brought Novus to Alderaan to save his life... it was the Force bringing the two together. Dark and Light, as equals. Balanced. He shifted uncomfortably, knowing now was not the time for internally debating philosophy. Yet Levin knew he would need to meditate on this. Lev realized his hand still held Novus, thumb brushing over her hip bone subconsciously.
"I- sorry." The Jedi mumbled, letting his hand fall before pulling the door open. With a shriek a rakghoul burst through the door as it swung open. Smoothly dodging raking claws Levin hammered his elbow down onto the back of its neck as the beast stumbled from the miss. A second later silver flashed as Lev's saber igniting, the blade swiping to remove the ghoul's head. The brief clash was less than quiet though, Levin's ears picking up the howls of incoming monstrosities.
"Inside! Now!" Lev's hand gripped Novus' shoulder to move her behind him, lightsaber switched off and being stowed by his free hand. The Jedi channeled the Force within, feeling its strengthening energies fill his presence. Reaching out with a tendril of the Force, Levin yanked a downed speeder to block part of the entrance. And then another, and another, and then one more to seal the entryway the best he could. It wouldn't stop the ghouls forever, yet he did not have forever anyway.
Shutting the door behind them, Levin's lightsaber flashed on once more. A few expert swipes left glowing metal slag where the doors joined, flash welding them shut. Yet another countermeasure, one he had used before in similar situations. A nexus always did have the same effect, no matter where it sprung up.
All the lights were still on, a grand holo chandelier casting amber light over red velvet accents and matching carpet. A small, classy cantina lay across one side of the entry hall, a grand mural depicting Alderaanian opera legends on stage sprawling across the other. To most it would appear just another high class opera. Yet the smell was entirely wrong. Instead of the musty smell of ancient fabrics and aging woods, the sickly sweet odor of rotted meat pervaded all. A deep, low, almost sentient sounding growl would echo within the hall.
"Oti?i sada..." Boomed the voice, accent and language completely foreign to Levin. Like nothing he had ever heard in his travels across the galaxy. The Jedi looked to Novus, curious to see if she smelled and heard what he had.

'Oh, never apologize for that.' That muzzy thought faded abruptly into a flurry of action. Raking claws, screaming beast silenced by the hiss of the Jedi's weapon. A hand on her shoulder guided her over the body and through the door, then vanished as he turned away. A series of heavy metallic thuds, and a most peculiar sense of vertigo as she watched Levin pull heavy bits of machinery toward himself. A blockade. Good.
Novus swirled in place, turning to regard the grand atrium. A holo chandelier flickered sporadically, casting an eerie light on furniture in dark leather. The walls and curtains provided a rich backdrop of red and gold, strangely drained of warmth. Thick carpet swallowed up the sound of her footsteps. Beyond, a dark archway and branching halls to either side.
She pulled the Force to herself, bolstering her senses and the strength of her arm. The power of the nexus leapt to hand immediately, eager and dizzying in it's sudden regard. It felt like the creatures it sustained – hungry, cold as a drowned corpse, paradoxically feverish. Novus shook her head, struggling to shut it out. It worked, more or less. To her senses, it felt as if the the dark energy pooling around her recoiled, turning hostile and sullen.
The temptation remained, a dim, shameful thought in the back of her mind. Any properly opportunistic Sith would take the power here for themselves, if only to deny it to someone else. Any proper Sith would have killed the Jedi, or at the least, allowed him to die.
Well.
Proper Sith were arrogant and stupid and always getting themselves killed.
Levin seemed to look around, briefly, before glancing back at her. She let one shoulder rise and fall, a sort of shrug, long fingers drumming along her saber hilts. This exorcism was his show, and yet they needed to find the center of this thing. That was simple enough; her senses said forward and … Down? A basement, perhaps. She moved to the archway, lingering at the threshold.
The space beyond was vast and dark. An empty stage, broken open near the center, a tunnel down into the earth. Rows and rows of seats, a few unlucky souls still within, shadowed outlines that she could barely make out. A strange sound met her ears, disffuse, a low hacking cough that stood the fine hair on the back of her neck on in. Squinting, she could just barely make out movement near the edges of the room, the gleam of bestial eyes more suited to the dark than her own.
Setting her teeth, Novus lit her sabers and started down the center aisle.

It appeared that the Sith had not heard that ethereal voice that had spoken. He was grateful that she did not, the mere tone of the words had sent ice through his veins. It was not a welcome, and it did not sound fearful. If anything it almost sounded... indignant, annoyed.
Levin followed Novus as the woman moved deeper into the building. The Jedi could feel the dark energies of the room slide over and around his presence in the Force. His was one that cleaved darkness, untouchable as it seared into the sinister air. With his head held high, Lev did not draw his weapon. Instead his hands would hang at his side, openly and closing slowly. Carefully Levin pooled the Force into himself, not enough to alert the nexus to his plan.
Novus clearly was experiencing something though. In the Force he could feel her anxiety rise, caution setting in as her sabers were ignited. Levin could sense the growing presence of life forms around them, tainted and indicating swarming rakghouls. They made it difficult for him to pinpoint any organic outside of Novus. Her aura was palpable to him, hazy, ghosting lines of silver curling around her form like smoke. A different contrast to his, solid and unwavering as his inner light framed his form. More and more that light grew, attracting tendrils of dark energy to snake out and test him. Each time the darkness tried to breach his aura, the tendril would flake and dissipate. The Jedi would begin to pull the Force into himself faster, opening the flood gates into his presence.
"Želiš li do suza joj meso!?"
This time the voice roared louder, inflections of rage mixed with the promise of violence. Levin inhaled deeply, his aura radiating outwards into the Force. He reached out to Novus, letting his presence press over hers gently, politely. She was under his protection against whatever lay within, and Levin was sure to make the nexus know this.
"We are not afraid of you."
"Oni su strah ..."
The stink of rotting meat suddenly spiked stronger, a rumble on the air as shadows seemed to deepen. Levin fought the surge of pride, realizing this was the nexus trying to get him to back off. Instead Levin let loose a burst of the Force stored within him, the light cast from his aura flared exceedingly bright in the Force. In a the space of a few meters around the Jedi and Sith, the Force would be suddenly cleansed leaving only pure and untainted energies in the place of darkness. A small taste of what was to come.
A taste the nexus clearly didn't enjoy. A collective howl suddenly shook the entire opera house, the rakghouls suddenly driven into an absolute frenzy as spears of dark energy shot out like shrapnel. Levin looked around quickly, realizing that some of these howls had come from within the building. All around the sounds of scrabbling claws, gnashing teeth and shrieking ghouls was heard. The Jedi looked down to Novus, nodding towards the pit that had taken the stage.
"There, hurry!"

Levin's aura seemed to shift, a subtle change that drew her attention if only because it seemed very unlike him. Betrayal, here at the eleventh hour? No, she didn't believe that. Response to their surroundings, then, whether real or hallucinatory. She cast a glance over her shoulder as she walked, brows raised in inquiry.
The energies of the nexus seemed to zero in on the Jedi, and the change became not-so-subtle with remarkable alacrity. His presence within the Force seemed to brighten and expand, as she had observed on Vendaxa. It stung, sharp and caustic across her senses as his aura overlapped her own. An invasion of personal space, in an abstract sense. She could hardly complain, turnabout being only fair.
The Jedi spoke. It was … Oddly phrased to have been simple reassurance. Wrong, in any case. She was afraid – the hacking cough, the dark shapes on the edge of her vision, the yawning mouth of the pit. They stirred up bad memories, teased the fight or flight response that went with them. She found her mouth had gone dry, her fingers wrapped tight on her weapons.
She heard it now. Impossibly loud, a few words in a language she did not understand, an accent she could not place. Levin did not leave her any time for consideration, either. His aura poured out like fire, burning a space clear of the dark side. Walking just a few feet in front of him, she was, of course, not exempt from the unfamiliar force technique. Her connection the dark side, something she'd alternately cursed and reveled in for half a decade, fizzled away into nothing.
“Oh.” 'It doesn't hurt anymore...' Novus blinked rapidly, staring at the Jedi in wide eyed shock, barely hearing the rising shriek of a dozen monsters. A breath later, the nod and point spurred her into belated action. She sprinted for the pit, long legs eating up the short distance, carrying her up and close to the edge. Nothing but inky darkness beyond.
The shapes in the shadows resolved themselves. Rakghouls, not the fearsome tuk'ata her mind had imagined there. They crashed through the wreckage, close on her heels. Ruby blades flashed and the two nearest of the beasts fell, crippled by the loss of key limbs. Novus peered over the edge, then jumped down.
The landing, cushioned by the Force, was still a shock to her joints. Her eyes cast about, taking in a vast space. Old stonework, of a style that reminded her of the city above. She stood in water up to her ankles, could hear more flowing somewhere nearby. Rainwater rushing in from the storm?
'What is this place?'

Levin followed Novus as she lead the charge to the pit. His lightsaber would flip to an awaiting hand, igniting in a flash of silver. The light that radiated off the Jedi regularly pulsed in slow bursts. Unsurprisingly the darkness within each rakghoul would suffer the light, the beasts squealing and writhing each time a pulse of the Force ballooned outwards.
Novus pulled ahead of him, plunging down into the pit well ahead of the Jedi. Levin slowed his sprint, turning in time to hack a ghoul's arm off. The blade angled after to stab through the beast's head to be swiped sideways, decapitating another ghoul. With a burst of the Force he leaped into the air, flipping to land on what remained of the stage. His eyes looked around frantically for some way to block the hole, fixing on the ceiling above with a grim stare.
Reaching out in the Force using both hands, the Jedi latched onto the structure and began to pull. Metal groaned in complaint, but Levin could find the structural weaknesses with the Force. With a great tug the metal screamed, stone crumbling and cracking as it tumbled down around him. With a grunt of effort he gave one last great tug with the Force, and let himself fall into the pit. He realized what had to be done, if the collapsing structure freely fell down the shaft it would likely crush and kill them both.
Levin inhaled sharply, pushing out with the Force to create a barrier. He could feel the stone, trapped rakghouls, and metal as it all hit the shield. The Jedi closed his eyes, feeling out with his mind's eye to sense if the structure fall had settled. Satisfied that it would not fall once the barrier was dropped, Levin banished the shield and attempted to turn and aid his fall. Entirely too late.
The Jedi crashed to the ground next to Novus, splashing the shallow water and grunting as his arm and ribs audibly snapped. Levin lay in the water, clutching his arm with eyes slammed shut. Panting in pained, ragged breaths he drew the Force into his body, dulling the pain and setting to fix the injury. Bones popped and creaked as they mended, flesh sealing from where the bone had slightly jut forth. Gasping as it twisted back into place, the Jedi shuddered as the now mended arm moved to his rib cage where two bones stuck out. Levin groaned in agony, each breath getting more ragged and dragged out.
He exhaled slowly, doing the best he could to steady his breathing as the Force channeled to his torso. With both hands hovered over the area a faint glow cast from each palm. Faster than the arm, the ribs slid back into place and flesh sealed. Levin gasped as the last rib cracked into proper place, laying back and enjoy the sudden ability to breath easily. He looked up at Novus, a corner of his lips ever so slightly upturned sheepishly.
"... Punctured lung. I have yet to get used to the sensation."
Levin slowly rolled to his feet, suddenly realizing he had somehow lost a boot since the opera house. He sighed audibly, looking at Novus dejectedly before bringing the booted foot up to remove it. The water was freezing to the skin, strangely clear and transparent. Had it been sewerage or run off from the stormy streets it would have been murky and unsettled. The Jedi looked around, taking in their surrounding.
"This is unexpected." Levin stated bluntly, amazed that a structure this big had gone unnoticed. Or had it? Perhaps the opera house was placed here with purpose? He spun in place slowly as the Force wafted off of him. As soon as he did the air within seemed to get heavier, the acrid smell of something burning arriving with it. Yet there were no sounds of flames, no light case from a fire's heat.
"Dobrodošli, sunce i mjesec..."

Debris rained down. One crimson saber winked off as Novus raised that arm to shield her head. Moments later, the Jedi fell beside her, bones breaking with an audible crunch. She winced in sympathy, watching with a sort of gruesome fascination as he called on the Force to mend those terrible wounds. Personally, she'd have taken her chance with the rakghouls. They flew even worse than reckless Jedi.
He looked up at her, almost smiled. Out of relief, she supposed, as the last of the pain washed out. She choked back a laugh at his words, shaking her head.
“Yeah, well. I don't think anyone ever really does.” She watched him discard his boot, privately glad not to be sharing that particular hardship. A quick glance down confirmed that the laces of her own were still in order.
The voice spoke again, accompanied by a strange scent in the air. Novus frowned, swiveling in place to discern the source. Further ahead, naturally. She began in that direction, pausing briefly as the channel they were in widened abruptly, opening out into the side of a larger hall. Bioluminescent fungus clung to the damp stone, casting an eerie bluish light. She glanced about, taking in the vaulted ceilings and elaborately carved pillars. A palace or holy site, perhaps; very strange for being so far beneath the city's surface.
The Jedi stepped past her, intent on his goal. Novus followed at a slower pace, watching his outline grow indistinct in the poor light. If he found trouble, well … Surely, she would hear. As it was, she found herself reluctant to face that force technique again, though she knew he must use it to cleanse the nexus. She still felt … Very strange.
”It's only temporary, you know. The taint will return to your soul in time, as tarnish to silver.” Levin's voice, though pitched strangely, and more words than she had heard from his mouth at once. She glanced briefly down the hall, where he had passed beyond sight, then spun in place, searching for the source. Ruby sabers ignited in each hand.
A strange laugh pricked her ear, and a lean figure emerged from behind one of the pillars. The Jedi, but not. He was fully dressed, for one thing, in the long coat she had seen before. The dark hair was neatly combed, instead of tousled and begrimed, and he was clean shaven. The eyes lacked an iris, appearing to her as dark pinpricks of pupil and pale sclera. They seemed to track randomly, then grew narrow as they settled on her.
”I can't figure out why he hasn't killed you yet.” The apparition smiled, a cruel, toothy sort of grin that tightened the facial muscles unnaturally. His wrist flexed, a lightsaber hilt dropping from sleeve to waiting hand. The weapon came to life with a familiar hiss.
“What are you?”
”Oh, don't. You're not stupid.” Not-Levin's voice turned harsh, filled with disgust. Without further warning, the apparition launched itself at her, silver blade flashing out.
Novus brought her weapon up to block, turning a killing strike into a graze. The silver blade ran along her left shoulder, feeling like no lightsaber burn she'd ever received. It was cold. Her arm spasmed, hilt falling from a nerveless grip. The blade sent up a cloud of steam as it hit the water. Stifling a cry, she swung her other blade, felt it connect.
The apparition hissed through it's teeth, swirling away in the mist. She stood alone for several moments, breathing heavily, searching. The power of the nexus filled her senses, blotting out all else, even as the steam hindered vision.
His blade caught her in the back, piercing the flesh with little resistance. Novus spun and fell, scream choking off abruptly as her heart stopped.

The more he tried to reach out in the Force, the sterner the resistance the nexus put up. Levin would sniff the air, the acrid smell only growing the more effort the Jedi put forth. Yet it didn't try to stop him as his senses finally pressed into the kernel of the nexus, the point of manifestation. The target, the whole reason Levin had come to Alderaan. His eyes turned down to Novus, and again he questioned whether it was her that the Force had brought him to Alderaan to find. To what end though? What exactly did the universe have planned for them?
He watched as Novus moved, headed towards where he had felt the center of the nexus. What drew her there, Levin wondered. Ready to be rid of the monstrous growth in the Force, the Jedi steeled his gaze and moved forward behind her. Letting the Force flow through him, Levin began to quicken his pace. As he moved around the Sith, his hand unconsciously moved to the small of her back as he maneuvered around the woman.
"Zaustaviti! Ili sam je ubiti!"
Levin could sense the nexus writhe as he neared, perhaps it finally began to realize what came for it. The Jedi knew what to do, this was not the first nexus he had sealed nor would it be the last. He looked over his shoulder to inform Novus what was about to happen and was shocked to see she no longer stood behind him. As Levin looked around, what had once been dimly luminescent fungi-lined walls was now an inky fog that hung in the air. It was everywhere, all around him. Lev could not see any walls, nor ceiling. There was only the hazy darkness that swirled and danced around him.
"Lidah ?e vas iznevjeriti..."
The voice now boomed all around him, seemingly spoken by the black fog itself. Levin narrowed his eyes, tired of hearing the diabolic tongues of darkness. With a slow inhale the Jedi let the Force within him flow outwards. With both hands spread and his head slightly canted back his aura would flicker brighter. Levin's presence would billow outwards, radiating further and further as regular pulses of light flowed off the Jedi. He let himself let go from the physical, eyes sliding closed as total serenity began to wash into and flow outwards from him. A sensation transcending any other meditative state, the Force roared within his mind. The past, possible futures, friends and even family. The war as it spread over the galaxy. The Sith. Her.
"Vi ?ete plakati ZA NJU!"
With one last great pulse of light Levin's aura would burst out, piercing light searing into darkness to purge it. The Jedi would gasp and his eyes would fly open as the Force took his body, letting himself go to channel its pure energies. It would began to recede, rapidly at first but shifting to a more regular pulse before flickering into nothing. Levin collapsed to his knees and knees, the shallow water cool on his exposed flesh. Panting from exertion, he hung his head in relief as all traces of the nexus seemed to be gone. Suddenly he realized Novus' presence was barely felt in the Force. Levin snapped up to his knees, and to his shock saw Novus less than ten feet away. Horridly still and twisted unnaturally as she lay in the water, her waxen hair floated and her eyes stared emptily up at the hall's ceiling.
The Jedi staggered to his feet over to the Sith, a hand moving gently to hover less than an inch over her left temple. The Force flowed from him to her, still detecting the faintest spark of life. It was all he needed.
Carefully gathering her soaked, cool body into his arms he let the Force between them flow further. The woman felt terribly frail in his embrace, soft skin sickly ashen and limbs limp. Levin clamped onto that spark of life within her through the Force, breathing reviving energies into her gently. Brow furrowed in concentration, he let his presence flow outwards not unlike the way he cleared the nexus. Slowly Levin could feel her return, a hand moving to rest on her chest directly above her heart. With the Force he mapped it out, carefully nudging it to beat. A flutter followed by a steady pulse, his hand moved to rest at her brow as he could feel her neurons spark and reignite.
"Today is not the day you die, Novus." Levin breathed as he moved his hand from her head. His eyes watched and the Jedi waited for the woman to stir. He did brace himself in case the Sith lashed out, which would not be an uncommon occurrence for the revived. Very seldom did that occur with lightsabers though.

Lidah – for that was always her name, no matter what else she called herself – stood at a threshold. On one side, life, and every joy and sorrow that went with it. On the other …
'There is no death, there is the Force.' The thought drifted slowly, like molasses dripping off a spoon. No wry intelligence lingered to appreciate this personal irony. She waited in mental and emotional silence, unwilling to go forward, unable to go back, until a line of silver fire spiraled out of the dark. It seemed to affix to the center of her being, for in this place she had no body. It pulled her back.
Novus stirred, tensing within the circle of the Jedi's arms. Sensation flooded back in: pain in the chest and head, cold in the extremities. The nexus and the shadowy apparition, both gone as far as her senses could discern. That meant that this was the real Levin, as if she could mistake him for otherwise, and … That he hadn't needed her help, in the end. Strangely disappointing, that. Her arm tightened about his neck briefly, in an awkward sort of hug.
“I'm alright. You can put me down.”
The Jedi acquiesced and she struggled to find balance on shaky legs. She held on to one of the pillars, scanning the water for her lost sabers, avoiding eye contact. Her left hand flexed experimentally, testing for function. Whatever the apparition's weapon had done to her, it appeared Levin had set it right.
“Thank you.”
Blue eyes alighted on a glimmer of silver in the water. Novus pulled her weapons to hand, hooking them back onto her belt, fingers lingering briefly before falling away. She dared to meet the Jedi's eyes then, watching him with curiosity writ on her face. 'Why bring me back?' The question went unvoiced, with enough possible answers coming to mind to convince her that she shouldn't be surprised. Not really.
“We're done, right?” Rhetorical, that. 'I want to go home.' 'You don't have a home.' She cleared her throat, coughing dark flecks of blood into her palm. The only outward sign of her recently averted demise. She frowned, wiped her hand on her pant leg; the dark fabric hid the stain.
“You'll be wanting to report in, I expect. Well, I always did like Coruscant.” She flashed the Jedi a weak smile, hoping to override what would certainly be his initial refusal. “I was just there, actually. Under an alias. Made sure to have a return ticket in order, just in case this didn't pan out. Should still be good.” She shrugged, a touch sheepish. “I had a date.”

Levin felt Novus begin to stir back to life, her lithe muscles suddenly flexing, where her skin touched his had begun to feel warmer. He felt her flex, one arm moving non threateningly. Much to his surprise the thin arm hooked around his neck, the woman embracing him in the cool ruins. Unsure of how to respond, Levin continued to hold Novus until she asked to be let free. Mumbling an apology he did as she said, hands holding onto her waist a moment to help steady her. He slowly rose back to his feet, nodding in recognition of her thanks. "You are welcome." Levin started, eyes scanning all around them for any traces of activity. Even the distant shrieking of rakghouls had faded, as if the snuffing of the nexus silenced them too. The light splash of her sabers returning to her caught his attention, turning to look back at Novus as she gazed at him with an expression he couldn't read. Fixing others had always been his strong suit, reading them was something entirely different. "I do believe we are... 'done'. The Force here has been balanced once more. The Republic will come to quarantine the city." Likely glass it too.... His eyes carefully watched Novus as she coughed, unsurprising given her lungs had ceased moving for moments. Her next statement caused sudden alarm to the Jedi, his eyes blinking once as his head slightly tilted to the right. Was she serious? Had a Darth been within the very capital of the Republic? And for... a date? Levin supposed this wasn't entirely impossible, Novus had proven able to hide from his keen senses. Why wouldn't she be able to hide out in a city of millions of other sentients? An odd sort of respect settled in his gut, the woman proving more and more to be unlike any other Sith he had met. And killed. The Jedi began to walk forward, water cool over his still bare feet. A hand would move lightly to the small of Novus' back to guide her towards where he could feel a tunnel leading to the surface. Walking in silence for a moment, he chanced a curious look down at the Sith. "You... have a date? On Coruscant? With a civilian?" Levin paused again, eyes looking back down the tunnel as he sighed lightly. "It appears I still have more to learn about Sith..." He would mumble, mostly to himself. fin
