Echo half-jogged up the ramp, feeling warmth seep throughout her and tempt her facial features to change. She felt light-hearted, uplifted. There was a brightness in her eye. She was happy. She was also proud of herself. With her spirit hopeful, Echo left the ramp behind her down as she awaited the delivery of the cargo. With a quick glance behind her to ensure nothing was arriving just yet, Echo lightly ran through the ships little maze. She swung half of her body around the cockpit’s entrance, hanging onto the edge and leaning. A smile finally lined her lips, part of her teeth showing. Her red hair swayed gently at her sudden halting motion.
“I got us a job!”
Then her red hair was seen leaving the doorway’s frame. Her soft footsteps echoed after her retreat back to the ramp. Such a giddiness made random spurts of energy. Echo was indeed pleased with herself and her actions, mentally patting herself on the back.
There were people at the bottom of the ramp when she slid to a stop at the top. Her face was transformed again, showing a stern outlook approach as she walked down to meet those with the cargo. There were only brief words exchanged between her and the leading man before he turned around and nodded, waving at the people to load the ship up. He passed on the forward payment and then proceeded to help his men. Echo pocketed the chip and bounded back into the ship to supervise the loaders. She clicked an intercom at the top, letting Delta know that neither she nor the loaders were in need of his help.
Echo pressed the control on the wall and held it, watching for a second to be sure the ramp was rising. She stepped off into the ship when it was about halfway raised, repeating her path back to the cockpit. Pausing in the door way, Echo released a breath and leaned against the frame.
“Commenor. Heading to Commenor. The job solidifies it. I know I sent the details. Not sure if you received them. So…” Then Echo saw November sitting just around the doorway in the exact same spot Echo had left her. Except November didn’t have her restraints. With Echo’s voice trailing off, the redhead’s lips were frozen in unspoken word as she stared at the blonde. She blinked once, mouth closing, and her hand lifted to point a finger at the other female. Echo’s posture was still relaxed against the doorframe. She looked ready to say something to November, the way her mouth moved as Echo sucked at the skin inside. Echo’s finger shook a couple of times at November and then the arm joined the other to cross. Her eyes jumped back to Delta, who seemed to have no concern that November without her restraints. “So… all right then.” Echo carefully walked around November and to the cloth pile that had been November’s make-shift handcuffs. She picked it up and wrapped it around her wrist.
“If we’re done fueling, I already plotted the course to Commenor before we left. Let’s go. Food on your own, I guess. I’m not going to try to make anything.” Echo maneuvered around November again with only a glance at the blonde, and then she vanished into the ship’s hallway. Walking down the corridor to her quarters, Echo could feel the ship angle away from the planet.
Had Delta freed November? Echo could understand from the seat, but not her hands. Did he really trust November that much? An ache burned in Echo, something fierce like fire and as unrelenting as glaring suns. Her pulse quickened some and Echo rubbed her face as she paced in her quarters. Or was he trying to show trust? If they showed enough trust, would November trust back? The fear beat in her throat that something horrible would come of trusting November too much.
Her stuff still sat in Echo’s quarters. Her bags, her potions, her chemicals and toxins. Echo was glad it was still there and reminded herself to set a lock on her door. She couldn’t allow November to earn too much trust to let the woman think she could get away with accessing her things without Echo and Delta around. Echo couldn’t allow tricks and plans or plots against she and Delta. If anything happened, Echo wouldn’t be able to forgive herself until she hunted down November and made the woman pay for every criminal act she had committed.
It was always better to plan for the worst of things.
Echo unwrapped the cloth around her wrist and laid it on her bed. She bent by November’s pack and reopened it, lifting objects until she found the other woman’s extra set of clothing. Echo unfolded them and gave them a thorough feel over before refolding them. She clasped the bag back together and left her room to the refresher. Echo grabbed basic hygiene supplies and the retrieved a blanket and pillow. She followed the hallways of the ship, passing the cockpit again, to what would be November’s quarters. On the sleeping mat, Echo dropped the pillow and blanket. She rested November’s clothes on the end of the bed. On the pillow, Echo set the hygiene supplies. At the door controls, Echo messed with the wiring to be sure November wouldn’t be able to lock and/or password her door. As Echo left, she shut the door behind her and paused by the cockpit to let November know her room was ready for her. For the third time, Echo left.
Not having trust did not allow Echo to be cruel to November. If November was heading to Commenor with them and stayed even after that, Echo would be expected to cope with November’s presence. She might as well start here.
