Personality:
Palas' life as a smuggler and ship captain has toughened her skin. Newly hired crew members are surprised to find her as a stern and unfeeling captain, as opposed to their expectations of a flirty twi'lek like the ones at the cantina. Because crew members usually don't stay on long, Palas has developed a fierce independence as well as a cold, tough exterior. Because her solitude leaves little time to repair her ship, she has also developed a sense of denial as to her own predicament of not being able to maintain her ship and crew.
But beneath the emotionless face and cold threats, Palas is a warm and loving person, as evidenced by her affection for Doc. If someone takes the time to get to know Palas and earn her trust, they are met with compassion and loyalty, as well as a sarcastic but gentle humor. And though she is stubborn and often single minded, Palas is a good leader and a great friend.

Biography:
Palas was born to Nui and Thon Hak, on Ryloth during a lull in the slave trade. Her father, known for his raids on other clan cities, was hard pressed for credits because of the lack of business and began to dip into spice smuggling. She saw very little of Thon as she grew up, but his expanded business brought their family a life of comfort.
When she was 10, her father moved them off of Ryloth when he had heard their clan planned to banish him and his family to the Bright Lands. He had sold one of their own clan into slavery, and that had been the last straw. They moved to Bespin, where Thon covered up his smuggling with a fake Tibanna gas trading company.
They continued to live in relative comfort on Bespin, though her father had had his fair share of close calls. Since Bespin was the base of Thon's 'company', he now spent more time at home. Over the years, he would teach Palas some tricks of the trade, such as how to fly, repair, and modify all kinds of ships. She also learned how to handle a blaster. Her mother had often protested, wanting Palas to act more like a Twi'lek lady, but Thon had seen how Twi'lek ladies were treated, he had made sure of it in many cases, and wanted nothing of that for his own daughter.
Just after her 19th birthday, Palas was given command of a freighter. Her father had recently purchased it, his second. Like the other, it was small and unremarkable, perfect for smuggling. Thon and Palas modified it together, installing secret compartments and a signal jammer. She was set to name the ship The Shadowlander, but on the day of it's maiden voyage, a gas explosion shook the city. The explosion had detonated in a storage container located on the level below their family's home. It had torn the place apart, and killed her mother. It was determined through investigation that the explosion had been sabotage.
Thon, sure that his past had come back to haunt him, soon fell into despair, unable, or unwilling, to continue on the business. He left it all to Palas, who was unable to govern two ships. She sold the first to the pilot her father had once employed and kept the one her father had given her and named it Nui's Jewel. As her father slipped into addiction to the very spice he once smuggled, Palas scrambled to make ends meat.
Within a few years, she, and a come-and-go crew of three settled into a fairly stable ryll smuggling business. Things were going well, and so Palas decided to take a little risk. She had a shipment lined up for Nar Shadaa, but her usual crew would not be available to go with her. Palas usually avoided the seedier places when she didn't have her crew to back her up, but she had been on a roll the last few months, and didn't want to lose the momentum. Securing this buyer meant a whole new line of steady credits. So she set off for the smuggler moon.
Once there, Palas had secured the shipment, and feeling good about it, had gone to have herself a celebratory drink at a nearby cantina. While at the bar, she was overpowered by a couple of thugs who tied her up and took her to their boss, Jarno Xi. Jarno dealt in all sorts of black market fares, including a Twi'lek slave ring. The thugs brought her to his office, hoping to get a little bonus for their initiative. Instead, they each got a good shot to the head.
While Palace was sitting on her knees in Jarno's office, a woman came in and systematically killed them all. In the firefight, Palas had managed to hide under Jarno's desk. After the woman had killed Jarno and his men, she left as quickly as she came. Palas wasted no time cutting herself free from her ropes with one of the thugs' knives and quickly escaped back to her ship.
The woman who had inadvertently saved her life would soon become partners with Palas. They now travel the galaxy together, Palas handling the business side, and Areleia handling the killing side.
Roleplay Sample:
Palas tried to make herself as small as possible as overhead blasters fired and office decorations shattered. It seemed like ages to Palas, who cowered under the desk, her eyes shut tight against the chaos around her. But in fact, it was only a few seconds. When it had all stopped, Palas opened her eyes. The office was in ruins, and the thugs who had captured her lie dead, their boss with them. She slowly ventured from under the desk, and then worked up her nerve to take a knife from one of the dead men's hands. Slowly, she managed to cut the ropes that bound her wrist. Wasting no time, she fled from the place.
She managed to reach the hangar where her ship was docked, and began to prepare for a quick exit. On board, she founder her spare blaster pistol that she kept in a hidden compartment. Her old one had been taken and discarded by the thugs outside the cantina when they had captured her. She slid the blaster into the holster on her hip and moved back down the ramp to load the last of her supplies. As she finished, the same woman who had killed all those men in the office came running into the hangar.
Just behind her, a group of men came running as well, firing their blasters. Without even thinking, Palas had her own blaster in hand and was firing rapid shots from behind a container. The woman was making her way to a small ship across the hangar. The least Palas could do was help her out.
But she would never make it there. One of the men came running up with an ion cannon. With a well placed shot, the small ship exploded in a ball of fire. Palas ducked as the blast sent smoke throughout the hangar. As she coughed and scrambled for the ramp of her freighter. She saw the woman and called out to her to get on the ship. The woman obliged, and Palas lifted the ramp just after she was on board.
Running quickly to the cockpit, Palas engaged the engines. The noise alerted the men, who began to fire on the ship. In response, Palas powered on the automated laser turrets, which covered their hasty escape. Once they were clear of the danger, Palas set the autopilot and left the cockpit to find her passenger.
The woman was in the cabin area, and seemed far to calm considering what just happened. She introduced herself as Areleia Child. Shaking her hand, Palas introduced herself as well. Little did she know, that this handshake would be the beginning of a very profitable partnership for the both of them.
