Hey there, my SWU-lites!
As the general nature of things, SWU evolves as the months tick by and it updates and adapts and levels up. The sections change hands from staff member to staff member, either just by swapping people around or through promotions and retirements. The Dark Jedi/Sith section has been subjected to such changes and thus was in need of a little update.
A thank you to the wonderful Jace for contribution of the Dark Jedi/Sith notes, which was used as a base for this expansion.
Pending Apps:
If the applicant has not made edits/ posts or replied to feedback in a two week period, then the character application will be moved to Incomplete Profiles. If your hiatus ends and you return to SWU to find your beloved character is not in Pending, just send the moderator a PM and he/she will revive your application back to pending.
Before even beginning a character on any roleplay site, it is very important to be familiar with the site’s lore and the rules. Here are links to the starting guidelines of your SWU journey:
The Rules - If you have not already seen these, please take the time to review them.
The Current Plot - This will help you become better acquainted with what is happening on the site.
Forbidden Aspects - A list of things you cannot do or have on SWU. This includes races, equipment, and the all important Force abilities. If it's on this list, your character may not have it or be it.
One more beautiful, wonderful resource:
Wookieepedia - This site is your ultimate guideline here on SWU. It will become your best friend and will clog your history as you relentlessly search for all things Star Wars related.
Now for the application.
Name: Names can be simple or they can be complicated. This is based upon race, and therefore a better explanation will be provided there.
Race: What race you choose determines almost everything about them, including their name. Some species, like the Twi'lek, have a very special way of naming an individual. There are many races to choose from and consider them wisely, as you should integrate their unique ways into their character development. This is thus a good place to begin the creation of your character.
Age: Do not underestimate the power of age. How old a character is helps determine how long the bio should be, ranks, and stats. It stands for a rough estimation of how much experience the character may have.
Height/Weight: There are many contributors to these two spots: gender, race, and age. It simulates a rough body type for the character, and one measurement does tend to affect the other. Please keep measurements for height in feet and inches (Example: 4'2'') and weight in pounds (Example: 103 lbs).
Appearance: Pictures are a great way to help visualize the character. Yet, even if the picture is exactly how you see the character, a written description is required for acceptance.
Birth Place: Usually influenced by race and thus a little research should be invested. While many species can be found wandering the galaxy, there are those who usually stay to their home world. Any xenophobic, secluded species (Example: Codru-ji) will need a story on how the family is so far from their home world. Be sure the planet has been discovered in this time period. Lastly, birth place can largely affect who the character is based on the views of the planet/world they originate from.
Faction: Dark Jedi or Sith
Rank: There are quite a few notes for this:
Dark Jedi Ranks:
Neophyte: This is equivalent to a Jedi Youngling. However, a Jedi Youngling receives training from the Jedi Temple/Jedi Order, while a Neophyte may or may not receive any training. Once a Neophyte is taken on as an apprentice, they become an Acolyte.
Acolyte: Dark Jedi Knights and Dark Jedi Masters can take on an Acolyte. During the Acolyte years, the character will train and learn under his/her master. The Master will play a significant role in your characters life and impact the charrie's life and outlook of the world.
Keep in mind WHEN your character becomes an Acolyte. If your character is apprenticed at 18, their stats will not be as high then if they became an Acolyte at 10, due to late training. When an Acolyte is fully recognized by his/her master, they are ready to become a Dark Jedi Knight.
Dark Jedi Knight: The minimum age to become a Dark Jedi Knight is 22. They can be older, but not younger. These characters have no master and are free to choose an acolyte of their own. There are three specializations for a Knight: Marauder, Prophet, and Assassin.
A Marauder tends to be the most common specialization. These character accept a focus in the art of combat, rather than philosophy. Marauders are quite proficient in lightsaber combat, much like the comparable Jedi Guardian, but proficiency depends on age and how long they have been a Dark Jedi. Stats will be skewed more toward lightsaber and combat abilities, and most Force powers are used to aid the marauder in combat.
The Prophets are more Force centered, dedicating their lives to the intricacies and philosophies of the Force. Stats will lean more toward the Force abilities, but will not have forsaken the lightsaber. Prophets are comparable to a Jedi Consular.
Lastly, Assassins can be compared to a Jedi Sentinel, having a mix of both lightsaber and Force stats. They do not excel at both, but are proficient at the uses of both. They mean lean more toward the Force or toward lightsaber, but they generally hold a decent balance of martial prowess and Force philosophy.
However, years can pass and a marauder may gravitate to being more like an assassin, or an assassin to a prophet. It isn’t unheard of, but a consistent gradual change is shows the most realistic change within an aging character.
Dark Jedi Masters: The minimum age to become a Master is 32. Again, the character may be older, due to a number of factors, but primarily age: when they first became an acolyte could prolong achievement of this rank. The character's bio should reflect the rank. Masters are more powerful and more respected and greatly more feared, and it is important that the moderators see, through your bio, that you are capable of handling such a character.
Sith Ranks:
Instead of Neophyte and Acolyte, there is Initiate and Apprentice.
Initiates: An initiate in the Sith can be any age and are individuals without a Sith master.
They are not required to be at the Sith Temple at all times. These characters are allowed to roam the temple and come and go as they please if they have transportation. They are simply individuals who have not acquired a master yet, and do not necessarily have to have one since there are actually plenty of initiate characters (most NPC) that are written who do not have masters. You can prearrange a master or acquire one through roleplay. Be sure to contact people and inquire whether their character is searching for an apprentice.
Apprentice: This is like a Padawan in the Jedi Order, however a lot of apprentices are granted a lot of freedom. They will work under a master, doing their master’s will, and train face to face with their master. They can be apprenticed to a Sith Knight, Sith Master, or even a Darth. However, be courteous, because the characters with these ranks belong to real people who have worked hard in character (IC) in order to reach those ranks.
Sith Knight: Dedicated followers of the dark side, individuals with a Dark Jedi history can continue their path as a marauder, prophet, or assassin. They go on missions and partake in epic battles, orders given to them by the Darths of the Inner Sanctum.
As a Sith Knight, your character will be allowed to take on a Sith name. However, only members of the Inner Sanctum have the title Darth, and membership into the Inner Sanctum only occurs in character. Having a Sith name merely means your character chooses to be known by another name, usually a name with significant meaning to that charrie. For example: If your character’s name is “Bumpkin”, he could choose his Sith name to be “Awesome”.
This rank is similar to Dark Jedi Knight and Jedi Knight.
Sith Master: The elite of the order. These individuals are strong and likely shouldered with more responsibility or expectation to maintaining order and taking on apprentices. They are still expected to heed the Darths’ wills and maintain a dedication to the Sith teaching and the Sith Order.
When an individual is a Master, his/her Sith name will have “Lord” attached to the beginning of it. So, instead of Bumpkin going by “Awesome”, he would now be addressed as Lord Awesome. Or Lady Awesome for a female character.
These individuals are on the same tier as a Dark Jedi Master or a Jedi Master.
Darth: Reserved for members of the Inner Sanctum. As mentioned, becoming part of the Inner Sanctum is allowed only though in character roleplay. You may NOT start with this rank.
These are the only people who are allowed the “Darth” title.
Lightsaber: The lighsaber is the primary tool of a Dark Jedi or Sith, marking them as a formidable force to be considered wisely. There are many ways a Dark Jedi or Sith can obtain a lightsaber, either through training in their previous faction (whether that is Jedi, Dark Jedi, or even Gray Jedi). As long as the individual has had some training, they may have a lightsaber. There’s no standard “look” to a lightsaber each, as characters usually construct their own (especially if they were previous a Jedi). This means each lightsaber is individualized and stands apart as a resemblance of the character’s uniqueness.
Lightsabers usually have two (2) crystals, and the color crystal is the only one that needs mentioning. The focus crystal does not need to be mentioned, but you may discuss it if you wish. However, in accordance to site rules, your crystal can only alter the color of the blade. Rare or exotic crystals must be explained in the bio, and please be sure they are not a forbidden item.
Lightsaber Styles: For easy access of lightsaber form information, take a gander at this wookieepedia page:
Lightsaber Combat
While there are several forms/styles listed here, please use only the lightsaber styles listed in the site's application. Also, the scale for lightsaber stats is 1-5.
When selecting lightsaber styles for your character, consider your character's personality and maybe even their physique. Are they strong and aggressive? Are they lean and quick? Are they brutish or are they quick-witted? These considerations will help you decide which lightsaber styles best fit your character, as well as what class specialization they lean toward - marauder, prophet, or assassin.
Marauders will lean toward having more points in lightsaber combat, and maybe even the more aggressive forms. Prophets, more Force dedicated individuals, will likely focus lightsaber stats on more defensive styles. This may not be the case, however; there are always exceptions.
Now, SWU has a couple of rules about lightsaber forms:
First, Shii-Cho is the foundation for all other lightsaber forms. It's very basic, and thus SWU requires your first lightsaber points to be in Shii-Cho. You may not have a stat in any form that is higher than your stat for Shii-Cho. For example, if your Shii-Cho is a 2, you cannot have a 3 in Makashi. However, Makashi stat could be a 2 at the same time Shii-Cho is 2.
Next, in order to have a stat in Juyo, your character must have mastered two other forms besides Shii-Cho. This means, including Shii-Cho, your character is a master in 3 other lightsaber combat styles.
Lastly, a general rule of thumb for determining stats is 2 years for 1 point. However, just as often, stats are determined on a case by case basis with strong reflection of the character.
Force Sensitive Abilities: The personality, race, age, and rank determines how proficient a character can be with Force abilities. Some species may have a natural inclination for a specific talent, such as telepathy among Iktochi or Zeltrons. However, this does not mean they are automatically awarded a high stat. While a natural, biological function may allow a species to use telepathy better, a character must still train in order to fully grasp and master telepathy.
You are allowed to assign points as you choose, but mods and admins expect "common sense" to be applied. The scale is set from 1-10, but please be aware 10s are not allowed. A 10 demonstrates absolute perfection, and since no one is perfect, a 10 is merely used to measure the proficiency.
Specialized Skills: These are not your run of the mill Force powers like Force Push. There are many, many special skills that are available for your Dark Jedi or Sith to explore and use. See the Forbidden Aspects list placed at the top of these notes and double check the ability you desire your character to have to ensure it is allowed on the site.
Once more, you're encouraged to think about who your character is and which abilities would best fit your character. Specialized abilities are optional, and details of the character's training and use with the skill is required.
Attributes: This section applies to your character without the aid of the Force. The Force may be used to bolster an ability for a short period of time, but your character isn't constantly keeping that skill bolstered. Remember that your character will not excel at everything. Occasionally, which race you choose may also influence a specific stat.
Many mods compare the stats on a human scale, so it is easier to understand, even across species, how strong, fast, or intelligent a character is. So, keep what might be considered "normal" for a human in mind when deciding physical stats.
Also, the melee skill is completely different from the lightsaber skill. Therefore, the melee skill will have no reflection on lightsaber skill, and lightsaber skill is not grouped with melee skill. Melee refers to the use of swords, axes, or whatever bashing weapon exists in the galaxy.
A Couple of Helpful Stat Notes:
For lightsaber stats, set on a scale of 1-5, a 5 is allowed. It means a character has mastered the form.
Here's a general breakdown of 1-10 stats for your use:
0-1 Abysmal
2-3 Bad
4 Below Average
5 Average
6 Above Average
7 Very Good
8 Extremely Talented
9 Extraordinary
10 Perfect
A stat of 6 needs a little more specific explanation in the bio. A 7 is when the mods really start looking for bio back up, mentioning training and some use. An 8 requires more details on their training and use of a many year period. To earn a 9, the character must have undergone a significant amount of training, dedicating years to the practice and use of the ability. Remember, a 10 is not allowed.
Bio: Here is where the meat of your application will be. The bio explains where your character came from, the experiences they have, the people they encounter, and what happens to make them who they are in present time. Details are vital here. I don't need to know every high school girlfriend and how many times they went to the bar in their life, but I do need to know the important events. Did they move planets? When did they encounter their first bad guy? What made them want to be a Dark Jedi?
There are no unknowns. Even if your character did not know something, the mods need to know to be sure it is in line with SW canon and site-wide plot. As far as SW canon goes, we understand our time period is set during the The Old Republic in timeline. However, haughty as we are, we ignore that section of the timeline in order to continue our own story. SWU has been around longer than ToR, afterall.
Keep your character’s age in mind, since that will determine the length of the bio. Any specialized abilities mentioned or higher stats are to be explained in the bio.
Understand your character has limits and attempt to keep the bio as realistic as possible. This is a sci-fi fantasy world, but no padawan can take a three Dark Jedi Master one on one and defeat them. Don't be silly; be real.
When making a Sith character, please be familiar of SWU’s lore when it comes to the present Sith Order. For the most part, the Sith Order has only been around for about two (2) years. The Sith Empire is composed of military might and funded by aristocrats who took up the banner name "Sith" in their opposition against the Republic. The aristocrats are not darths, and have chosen to separate themselves from the Republic and establish a new empire while warring with the Republic. The Sith Order, with the Darths and the lightning, can be found on Korriban.
Mention of canon previous Sith Lords and Sith Holocrons is prohibited. In fact, do not refer to canon characters/events at all in your bio. Be expressively creative and use your imagination, describe what you see with your inner eye. This is your chance to shine with all your writing glory and individuality.
Keeping your bio neat actually helps the mods a lot. Spacing out your paragraphs helps us read better. Do your best with the grammar and punctuation, and remember to revise. For some of you SWUbies, we understand if English is not your first language. We're happy you're here and simply encourage that you do your very best.
RP Sample: This piece of the app allows us to see how you are going to play the character. Experiment with your character's personality or demonstrate their prowess. Use details. Tell an in character story. We want a peek and taste of your RP abilities, but remember that length does not demonstrate quality. Go for your best roleplay work in this section.
The higher ranked or more powerful a character is, the higher we hold the RP Sample standards. Say you created a Dark Jedi Master. We want to know how you play the character and if you can handle playing such a powerful character within site rules.
As the general nature of things, SWU evolves as the months tick by and it updates and adapts and levels up. The sections change hands from staff member to staff member, either just by swapping people around or through promotions and retirements. The Dark Jedi/Sith section has been subjected to such changes and thus was in need of a little update.
