So! You’ve decided to venture into this great big world of fantasy tech as a part of your resident space opera! Unsurprising, as it is what puts the “Star” in “Star Wars”. While the universe you enter here isn’t technically “science fiction”, the fact of the matter is that even in the most popular of fantasy worlds, there are established rules and limitations to follow. A universe without bounds is an impossible, unfun place indeed. So here on SWU, we do our best to break tech down into two basic fantastic categories:
Standard - This is tech that, for all intents and purposes, does exactly what it’s supposed to. Guns shoot bullets/projectiles, ships fly/go into hyperspace, speeders speed, repulsors repulse, and detonators detonate. All stock technology is appless due to the fact that the limitations, capacities, and abilities they hold are common knowledge. For example, a basic light blaster pistol will not be blowing through tanks, just as a anti-material blaster cannon will not be optimal for shooting that advancing squad of troopers. For more information on each, see below:
Standard Ships: swrponline2.proboards.com/thread/3531/ship-class-information
Standard Weapons (Coming soon!)
Standard Armor (Coming soon!)
Standard Vehicles (Coming soon!)
Standard Droids (Coming soon!)
Non-Standard - In order for tech to be non-standard, it has to differ from the norm for a piece of technology in its classification. This would involve weapons with special properties, modified or customized ships, improvised droids, etc. Essentially, if you have a gun that shoots bottle caps or a battleship redesigned into a freighter, it differs to varying degrees from what a standard gun or battleship would and could be used for.
But how can one tell simply if there technology is "non-standard"? Run it through the following three questions:
If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, then congratulations! You will be staying here in the tech section and creating a tech app! The priorities of the review process will be similar to that of a character review. We just make sure that the app makes sense, is not totally impossible physically (the “fantasy” in fantasy tech does not mean your dreadnought can be faster than a starfighter), and is generally consistent with site lore. Aside from that, we seek to give you as much creative license and freedom as possible, so get imaginative!
Note: For Clause #2, unique aesthetics are excluded from apps to a degree. If the technology’s aesthetic is purely just for its particular looks (i.e. you simply want your particular tech to look a certain way and in no way act differently), then it is counted as standard tech. If the technology’s aesthetic affects its performance in any way (i.e. a gun made of gold is far heavier, and therefore more difficult to wield), then it must be listed and approved in an app. If you’re unsure about your particular piece of technology, feel free to run it by a mod for a second opinion.
We hope this short guide has been helpful. Happy inventing!

But how can one tell simply if there technology is "non-standard"? Run it through the following three questions:
- Is the technology unique in its backstory? Does it build on SW lore, or does it establish original SWU lore? Is it a revolver that the character created from scratch? Is it a prototype ship made by a company you’ve created? Etc.
- Does the technology have any capacities or abilities that differ from its classification? Does it do or was it modified/designed to do anything unlike its technological kin? Is it a revolver made out of solid gold? Is it a ship that’s been outfitted with a better hyperdrive? Etc.
- Does the technology simply not fit into any of the given categories of standard technology? Have you created a droid specifically designed to police casinos and watch for cheaters? Have you crafted a ship that’s only meant to fly in parades on Coruscant? Etc.
If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, then congratulations! You will be staying here in the tech section and creating a tech app!
