Overall Looks • Well-built, tall, and broad at the shoulders, Vance just misses the marks for intimidating and dashing thanks to his conservative style. Black, curly hair wraps about the top of his head in a styled do, matching striking eyebrows and a well-kept beard. Steely blue eyes don't reveal their color well unless under intense study, more akin to a darker grey than a sky tone. Both steal the show from a fair face that sports a few tiny scars, a large blemish just concealed within his hairline, and a face kept in a firm expression through most of its endeavors. Muscular and stacked, Vance seems to be comfortable in his size, moving with powerful strides and standing with crossed arms. In terms of clothing, Vance fails to bring the same level of flair that other underworld higher-ups seem to enjoy. Sticking to simple, well-cut suits for formal events, his clothing seems to range across the practical spectrum. In his most casual moments, he can be seen in simple T shirts, pants, and very the very rare tunic. In moments of confrontation, he can be seen in anything from light and medium armors, his saber typically concealed at his side. The only things Vance actively avoids are red and black hues, as well as certain types of well-known robes. Personality Profile Vance can be boiled down to key traits; an intense curiosity that can overpower even his strongest senses of self-preservation, and a bold skepticism that has come to hold little sacred. Both are consequences of a man who yearns to be kind, trusting, and helpful, but knows better than to blindly accept the words of anyone who asks something of him. This mixture can make Vance seem almost childish in his questioning at the best of times and downright interrogative at his worst. Either way, he has a particular drive to find the answers to his questions one way or the other. Buried beneath these behaviors is still a selfless soul, the Jedi teachings of peace and harmony too etched into his soul to rid himself of. Vance receives few greater pleasures than making others happy, his own desires a secondary priority at best. With time, this desire to help has come to coexist with a desire to fight; something that the former Sith will deny adamantly despite all evidence. When convinced of a cause or invested with genuine trust, Vance proves to be an unshakable sentinel, defending what he believes to the last while remaining level-headed and aware enough to avoid being arrogant. All in all, Vance is simply a calm passenger through what has proven a tumultuous life, trying his best to live right by his own morals, his few true friends, and his beliefs. When one or more of the three are inevitably questioned, it's all he can do to try to it all as best as he can before making a decision and sticking with it. Background Father • Ovadiah Asano, deceased, freighter Mother • Kilma Asano, deceased, freighter Siblings • None Other Important Connections • Lidah Faine [Darth Novus], 37, former Darth and Sith master, surrogate mother Locke Nemse, 35, Jedi Master, sort've his hero Overall History • Vance was born to a sweet couple of traders, Ovadiah and Kilma, who reared him from birth in the very mobile lifestyle of trading commodities planet to planet. Despite testing positive for Force sensitivity, the couple debated if such a monastic lifestyle was right for their son, putting the decision off. What time the boy didn't spend on freighters was spent with his uncle, Kilv, who ran a small machine shop on Cerea fixing farming equipment. As a result, Vance's earliest memories include tools, moving parts, and spaceship corridors. After his parents died in an attempt to break into arms-dealing, he became his uncle's ward, who quickly determined he would have a better life in the Jedi Order. Life as a Youngling commenced normally for Vance, who was a notably quiet child. Kind-hearted and trusting, he would often find himself tricked and teased by his more devious peers. This began to instill a sense of skepticism in the boy as he grew to Padawan age, taking a liking to more defensive styles of fighting as he grew taller and taller. As classes gave way to independent study, Vance could often be found in the Archives studying mechanics, the sciences, and rare forms of art. As his teenage years took hold, Vance began his padawanhood under the tutelage of a Master Shon Tul. For two years, things progressed smoothly, the elderly Jedi encouraging the boy's affinity for Soresu while doing his best to inspire an admiration for diplomacy and non-aggression. Force training began in earnest, with Vance revealing a natural talent for telekinesis. Halfway through the third year, however, Shon Tul's health began to fail in earnest after being attacked during an assault while acting as a mitigator, and by the end of the year, the old Jedi was being buried. This began a period of constant shifting for Vance, as new masters come and went through months. Over the course of three masters, Vance was put through the rigors of training by an athletic Sentinel, the intensity of study by a shrude Consular, and the joys of artwork and machinery by a peppy Artisan. Each moved on for one reason or another, but all instilled small passions in Vance that persist to this day. His fifth and final Jedi master, Shadow Tal Firians, seemed to be the final fit Vance searched for. Their relationship proved more familial than formal, Vance often jokingly referring to his master as his aunt. For her part, Tal did her best to shore up Vance's weaknesses in mind and body, helping him specialize in sensing and exercising him in being analytical. Furthermore, the Shadow introduced Vance to her friend Locke Nemse, who Vance found particularly insightful. After finally bringing Vance to Ilum to find his saber crystal, the two formed a close bond that proved to be severed by the war the galaxy found itself in. Leaving him at the Jedi temple on Taris, Tal departed on a particularly classified Shadow assignment only to never return. After two months with no contact, she was reported as missing in action, and Vance resumed his state of masterlessness. With the war consuming the Mid Rim and headed toward Taris, Vance was assigned to help perform maintenance on Tarisian infrastructure along with the Jedi Corps. Assuming this to be a subtle suggestion that he abandon his pursuit of Knighthood, the teenager resigned himself to fate and took the job. This proved fateful, as during a routine check an airway, wires crossed just wrong enough to send Vance flying down the lower levels of Taris. Attacked and bitten by rakghouls, he was only saved by the intervention of Darth Novus. Stuck on Rhen Var, Vance found himself at a loss. He couldn't return to the Jedi at the risk of being hunted by the Sith within their own space, but he proved barely willing to speak with Novus at first, convinced that she was a monster. With little option, he agreed to take up the mantle of Novus's apprentice, claiming to only be holding the title as a measure of self-preservation. With time, however, Vance and Novus became better and better acquainted, the apprentice finding the Darth more and more relatable. While finding much of her outlook (and many of her methods) disagreeable, a trust was formed. Both were present for the disaster on Taris, and following the harrowing events, their relationship changed from a mere tutelage to a downright familial bond. Therefore when Darth Novus was "killed" by Empress Renata, it came as little surprise that Vance fled the Sith Order. His shuttle "crashed" on Rhen Var (by his and Novus's design), prompting him to be officially declared dead. Taking up the new name of Thelonious Arkandri, Vance assisted Darth Aurelius with smuggling the also "dead" Novus out of the Empire into Hutt Space. With their new lives beginning, Vance began to work for her, acting as her head enforcer thanks to his stature, unhidden Force-user background, and aptitude for defense. As Lidah established her criminal empire, Vance established himself as a close fixture, silently reveling in the newfound freedom from the Sith Order. While still finding criminal dealings distasteful, he mitigated his distaste with new pursuits, such as caring for Lidah's ever-growing collection of exotic pets, refining his mechanical knowledge, and slowly learning new forms of art. |
