Havlen Torrik Full Name • Grand Moff Havlen Torrik Race • Human Birthplace • Muunilist Age • 56 Gender • Male Sexuality • Heterosexual but largely uninterested Faction • Imperial Concept • Dangerously intelligent and cunning Minister of Security for the Empire, [Rank 3] Languages • Galactic Basic, Huttese, Durese, Binary, Mandalorian Assets • Vast Personal Fortune, Extensive Political and Diplomatic Connections and the Resources of the Ministry of Imperial Security Appearance Face Claim • Cristoph Waltz Height & Weight • 6'1'' & 167 lbs Overall Looks • Havlen is a man used to having his orders obeyed and it shows in the way he carries himself. In other words, he has a Presence. He has a military like posture that never slouches, keen blue eyes that always seem to find you the moment when you least wish them to and ears that rarely miss whispers if uttered in the same room. Many a subordinate has been unpleasantly surprised by Havlen making a dry yet biting remark on something they just whispered to a co-worker. Havlen could be considered to be handsome, in a slightly older gentleman kind of fashion. He has statuesquely good looks with strong features, sharp nose and a narrow mouth. His graying dark brown hair is always up to regulations and never unkempt, just as his face is always clean shaven. When it comes to clothing, Havlen lives in uniforms. It doesn't matter where he is, Havlen will most likely wear an uniform with all the appropriate marks of his rank. Personality Profile There is a saying among the people working for Havlen: 'You can't impress the boss". It is a fairly accurate estimation. Havlen is an extremely hard person to impress or surprise and even when someone manages to surprise or impress him he doesn't show it. Or any other reactions or emotions in general. No matter what happens, Havlen is usually able to maintain a completely neutral face that reveals very little of what he is actually thinking. Havlen is a staunch patriot but not a blind one. In fact, he doesn't think much of many of the leading figures of the Aristocracy, considering them spineless fools for letting the influence of the Sith Order grow almost unchecked and with their support. On more than one occasion he has chosen to ignore orders he disagreed with. However, due to a combination of skilled political maneuvering, abusing loopholes in the regulations and, most importantly, getting results he has so far avoided any serious problems. But no matter what his personal opinion of the current ruling body is, Havlen would never betray the Empire and is willing to do anything for it. There are three things that Havlen cannot tolerate in any shape or form: corruption, incompetence and idiocy. Showing any of them in his presence is a quick way to find yourself under some form of investigation by the Imperial Security. Havlen himself is as incorruptible as it is possible to be as an Imperial Minister without completely alienating his political allies. To his subordinates Havlen is an extremely demanding superior but also an extremely rewarding one provided that you can meet his expectations. He values competence, efficiency and innovation over right connections and background. While Havlen dislikes taking any time off of his work he tries to maintain an active social life. While his efforts are in part motivated by political pragmatism (a recluse rarely has friends he can call upon for favors and support), he does have a number of select friends whose company he genuinely enjoys. He is also relatively regular sight in most important social gatherings at the capital and although he generally isn't considered to be the life of the party he is often described as rather pleasant company, especially if one enjoys intelligent conversations. When it comes to his work, Havlen is diligent, methodical and thorough. Havlen never phones anything in, always giving his full effort. He prefers intelligent and surgical approaches over blunt use of force, though he will resort to it if he considers it necessary to accomplish an objective. Background Father • Baron Andon Torrik, Deceased Mother • Lady Eline Torrik, Deceased Siblings • Baron Andon Torrik II, Brother, 59 Other Important Connections • Isalda Torrik, Wife, high ranking bureaucrat in the Ministry of the Interior, 53 Silena Torrik, Daughter, 21, Academy Student Andon Torrik, Son, 19, Navy Cadet Overall History • Havlen was born into wealth and privilege on the planet Muunilist soon after the founding of the Empire. His parents, Baron Andon Torrik and his wife Lady Eline, numbered among the founders of the Empire and therefore Havlen had a bright future ahead of himself, even if he was the second child of the marriage and thus not in line to inherit any titles. It would have been easy for Havlen to grow up to be a brainless socialite whose only interests lay in living it large on his parents money until it was time to inherit but his parents had other plans. None of their children would grow up to be useless aristocrats. No, their children would have purpose in their lives: to do their part in building the Empire to a power to rival and even surpass the Republic. Education began early in the Torrik family. As soon as Havlen and his siblings were old enough to be even rudimentarily taught the horde of tutors took over their daily lives. By the time Havlen was seven he could read and write well for his age and do basic math without problems. His tutors remarked how he never seemed to forget a lesson and always seemed to be prepared to learn more, generally exceeding all of the expectations they had placed on him. If it hadn't been his parents keeping him grounded, Havlen might have developed an arrogant streak. However, his parents had the good sense to step in and bludgeon his ego whenever it seemed like he was getting too big for his shoes, thus ensuring that Havlen grew up without any delusions of grandeur. Whenever he would begin act like he was better than his siblings simply because he had better grades, he would have to suffer long lectures about how his siblings were better than him in something else, be it manners, sports or arts, and how just being smart didn't make him a better person. Instead Havlen's parents made sure to instill him with a strong sense of duty and plenty of ambition. At the age of eleven Havlen was shipped off to a prestigious boarding school designed to prepare the offspring of the rich and powerful to enter the Imperial Academy. Leaving home for the first time was somewhat hard for Havlen but he got over it soon and adjusted to the school life quickly. Many of the other students at the school came from similar background as Havlen, so there was plenty of common ground to build friendships. Add to that Havlen’s keen intellect and better than average social skills and he soon had a relatively large group of friends surrounding him. Many of those friends ended up being lifelong friends. Havlen continued to excel at school, generally ranking at the top 5% of his classes. It took plenty of effort on his part but never struggling. Havlen never had to read anything more than once and he would remember it almost word for word. Of course, remembering something and understanding it were two completely different things but Havlen was blessed with a sharp mind and paid attention during classes. He also began noticing patterns in what the various teachers emphasized in their teaching and examination. This resulted in two things: first, by his fourth year in the school Havlen could fairly accurately predict what kinds of questions a teacher would put in their tests and two, a considerably more important result for his future, it awakened in him an interest towards the inner workings of a sentient mind. During the last three years he went to the boarding school, Havlen took a number of introductory classes about psychology and xenopsychology. These classes sealed his interest matter and he continued to study the two subjects through his life even if they didn’t become his major at the Academy. Havlen graduated at the top of his class and entered the Imperial Academy the following year. It wasn’t much of a change from his previous school: the rules were stricter, demands higher and there was a bunch of new daily routines to deal with. Other than that it wasn’t too different from what Havlen had grown accustomed to over the last seven years. Even most of his friends were from the previous school. Havlen managed to maintain his grades at a level he was used to. His time at the Academy was some of the best time in Havlen’s life. He thoroughly enjoyed the more challenging subject matters and assignments, the Academy life and the atmosphere there in general. The education there covered everything from military subjects to sciences. Havlen, on his parents’ insistence, studied strategy and administration but made sure that he also had classes he was more passionate about, such as psychology. But studies weren’t everything in his life at the academy. Havlen also took actively part in various activities outside the school and was generally liked by most of his co-students. On his last year in the Academy Havlen was approached by recruiters from the Imperial Security Services. Due to his high grades and other factors he had been flagged as a potential recruit for the Internal Intelligence branch of the Service. Havlen was intrigued by their offer, mostly because he calculated that there would be less competition for promotions in the Imperial Security than there would be in the Army or the Navy. Also he found the career his parents had in mind for him terribly boring. It was clear that they intended to use their relations to secure Havlen a junior position in some military staff, possibly as an assistant to some older high ranking officer. A position that was safe, boring and carried a promise of advancement through knowing the right people. Havlen agreed to the offer after short consideration. Havlen’s parents weren’t too pleased over his choice: a career in the Imperial Security, while respectable, lacked the shine of a military career. However, any objections his parents might have had towards his choicec of career vanished once Havlen turned out to be excellent at his job. He stood out from the other new agents as a skilled interrogator and a good investigator. On his third year in the service Havlen managed to gain the attention of his superiors by breaking the record on most closed investigations in a year. By his fifth year on the job Havlen was promoted to a senior operative and transferred to a more prestigious post at the capital. Two years later he was given his own team there. Whenever Havlen had free time, he continued studying. He enrolled on several advanced courses on interrogation and psychological profiling and evaluation, eventually getting himself certified as a profiler. At work he continued to stand out. Havlen’s unit soon became known as one of the most efficient teams in the Imperial Security. Havlen got most of the credit for this, as his superiors preferred to give credit to a member of the gentry, though a large part of the efficiency could be attributed to the people Havlen had allowed to stay in his team. The operatives that didn’t live up to his standards had all been quickly dismissed or transferred away from his team. Due to the continued high efficiency of Havlen’s team, smart politicking on his part and little pull from his family’s connections, Havlen was made the section chief in charge of Muunnilist’s branch of Internal Intelligence soon after his thirty third birthday. Now that Havlen finally held a position ‘worth having’ he could truly begin build up his network of connections inside the Imperial Security and outside of it. So far he had been forced to rely largely to connections his family had and those he had made during his time in the Academy but now Havlen had a position that made other influential people on occasion contact him for favors of various kinds. Havlen never granted any of them without careful consideration and never agreed to anything that went against his sense of duty. Most important however, was getting in good with his direct superiors. It was a relatively easy task. The directors were all also members of the Imperial elite and as such had a lot of common ground with Havlen and he could be quite charming without coming off as a sycophant. It also might have helped that Havlen managed to marry the daughter of an influential Grand Moff. Her name was Isalda. Their marriage began as something of a political match but grew into a happy marriage with time, although the fact that Havlen worked long hours and was often called to spent long times away from home occasionally put a strain on their marriage. However, Havlen made sure to make it up to her whenever work kept him away from home for longer than couple of days. On normal days Havlen did his best to make it home before she went to bed and if at all possible, tried to have at least one meal per day with her, be it breakfast, lunch or dinner. Few years into their marriage the issue about children was raised. Both their families were continuously pestering them about the matter. Both were reluctant at first: Havlen saw children as 'another chink in his armor' and Isalda feared that having children might have an adverse effect on her career in the ministry of interior, but after talking about the situation, they decided that children maybe weren't such a horrible idea. Their first child, Silena, was born later the same year and two years later she got a little brother, Andon. Havlen changed his schedule only little over his children, being part of their life whenever his work permitted, relying heavily on the various nannies and tutors to take care of the children. Havlen’s efforts at building connections were successful. He spent only six years as the section chief on Muunnilist and during those years he had improved the branch’s efficiency considerably, leaving it in excellent condition for his successor, an operative he had carefully groomed for the position and recommended. After breaking a dangerous anti-government extremist group on Muunnilist Havlen was promoted to the Deputy Director of Internal Intelligence. Havlen spent relatively short time at said position. Two years later, after submitting a detailed and comprehensive report on numerous problems in the Internal Intelligence department resulting from incompetent leadership and his suggestions on how to correct them, Havlen was promoted to full director. He didn’t waste any time setting in. Havlen all but reorganized the Internal Intelligence Division over the next couple of years. He purged the division of people he considered incompetent or otherwise unsuitable for their position and replaced them with competent people, restructured the command structure to allow more efficient action without unnecessary bureaucracy getting in the way and reformed the training for new recruits as well as the recruitment process. Some of the changed Havlen made caused controversy among those in power but they couldn’t deny that they had a positive effect on the Internal Intelligence’s performance and efficiency. The years preceding the war with the Republic were hectic time for the Imperial Security and especially for Havlen’s division. With the preparations for the war underway the Empire needed stability more than ever before and Havlen wasn’t going to strain under the pressure. He personally saw dozens of crucial operations directed against dangerous dissident factions that resulted in successes. One of them, directed against a radical anti-Imperial terrorist cell on Muunilist, made him a Moff. A number of key Sith Aristocrats were gathered in a conference on Muunilist, presenting an alluring target for assassination and the terrorist cell went for it. Fortunately Havlen was aware of the plot and personally directed the operation that captured them before they had a chance to seriously threaten the aristocrats’ life. Following the beginning of the war Havlen’s division has been busy thanks to an increased need for anti-insurgency operations across the occupied sectors. This has led Havlen to butt heads with some members of the military, as their approach to an insurgency problem is generally to throw soldiers at until it goes away whereas Havlen’s prefers more subtle and elegant approaches. During the war Havlen was appointed the Minister of Security for the Empire and promoted to the position of a Grand Moff. Despite the extensive political changes the Empire went through following the peace, Havlen still holds on that position. Although he had never been the greatest friend of the Sith Order personally, Havlen, ever the political pragmatist, recognized a winning side when he saw it and backed the current Empress' takeover of the government. As a reward he was allowed to continue at his current position, though part of this appointment might have been that trying to remove him from office could have agitated the Aristocrats still on the fence about joining with the dissenting ones. |
