His dark skin is generally clear and free of marks, safe the subtle signs of aging setting at the corners of his eyes and on his brow. He keeps his grey-flecked hair cut short, with an accompanying beard that's always immaculately trimmed. Alder's wardrobe is as expensive as would be expected of a man of his wealth and stature. His day-to-day clothing is usually some sort of dress attire, and in the time since taking the Chancellorship, his wardrobe has expanded to include countless styles from the Republic's innumerable cultures. Whatever he wears, from the most formal affair to an impromptu getaway into the woods near his family estate, Alder wears it like a second skin, comfortable in most anything. Personality Profile Alder is, above all else, a man of boundless ambition. He seeks the best in all things, whether for himself, his family, or for the Republic. He expects the best from others, but not without demanding the same of himself. If there's anything he can do to further a cause in which he believes, he will, to the best that he can. He's not afraid to get his hands dirty, so to speak, and do the work it takes to make things happen, and he takes whatever steps he can to ensure that he doesn't ask anything of his subordinates that he wouldn't ask of himself, in the same position. Alder carries a deep devotion to his homeworld that's second only to his devotion to the Galactic Republic. He loves Alderaan intensely, as he does so the Republic. Still, he's learned to temper these passions as he's risen through the political ranks and to the Chancellorship itself. The Republic faces uncertain times. As its leader, Alder feels an imperative to be a steady guiding hand through whatever turbulent waters lay ahead. On a more personal level, Alder is generally even-keeled. To his allies, he's a dogged, determined friend through thick and thin. His political opponents have found him to be a meticulous, calculating foe. While he can stir his passions and put on a show when needed, Alder prefers to handle things methodically and thoughtfully. Still, he's an active man and prefers to always have things in motion -- a trait that sometimes places him at odds with the slow-moving Galactic Senate. When away from the unending needs and pressures of his political life, Alder enjoys quiet time with his family. He's particularly fond of hunting and fishing, and though he knows all the fineries of "noble" life, he prefers escapes to quiet, simple pleasures in the increasingly-rare times that allow them. From the very beginning, Alder’s life was one of extraordinary comfort. Nesota, his mother, served as an associate representative for the world in the Galactic Senate. His father, Ousan, was a magnate whose family had long owned the famed Vrieska Vineyards. The Vrieskas lived in an estate not far from Aldera, and Alder, as their firstborn was given the very best from an early age. However, his parents placed high expectations on him and his younger siblings and emphasized the value of hard work and treating others with respect. Alder attended a prestigious academy in Aldera, before going to the city’s famed university where he sought an education in political science to follow in his mother’s footsteps. As a child, and later a teenager and young adult, Alder showed a knack for interacting with other people, no matter their background. He was an ambitious boy from the start, and his upbringing only kindled that flame. It was at the university that Alder met Victoria Aspen Naaden — who her fellows often called “Asp.” She was a professor at the time, teaching political science and Galactic history. His time with Professor Naaden was short, but in that brief span, she left an impression on him and they kindled a friendship of sorts. After university and graduate school, Alder entered the world of politics. He started at the local level, working in offices run by Alderaan’s great houses to help oversee the planet’s affairs. He rose quickly through the ranks, and by his mid-thirties, he was working as a field agent for Alderaan’s Senator. Alder’s work saw him acting as one of many liaisons between the Senator himself and the Alderaanian people. His work saw him put in countless hours for four years as he worked to meet with the world’s people--from the most powerful of members of the great houses to everyday folk who lived in the quiet mountain towns scattered across Alderaan’s pristine face. When he was 37, Alder was selected as an associate representative for the now-Senator Naaden, who’d re-entered politics after serving as Alderaan’s senator some years earlier. This was Alder’s introduction to Galactic politics. It was an entirely different beast than even Alderaan's global affairs. It was an interesting time to join politics on the Galactic stage. A collection of worlds along the Galactic North had formed an alliance of sorts, naming themselves the Sith Empire after the Republic’s nemesis of old. Hostilities had yet to break out, but even Alder, fresh-faced and starry-eyed could see a potential conflict stirring on the horizon. Everyone could. Alder learned quickly from Naaden, who’d proven to be a mentor of sorts through the years, even after she left Aldera University to further her political career. While the two didn’t always see eye-to-eye on every issue that arose, he always strove to follow her mold of strict, unbending transparency and integrity. And on every issue, from trade disputes to Galactic farming regulations to questions of whether the Republic should further militarize for a confrontation with the Sith imposters in the Outer Rim, Naaden challenged him to think for himself, regardless of whether she agreed with him. It served him well. Alder quickly gained a reputation in the Senate as a standout among the Associate Representatives. He was known to take a thoughtful approach to issues, and as a fierce voice for causes in which he firmly believed. It became a bit of an open secret that Naaden, who won election to another term three years after he joined her as an associate representative, was grooming Alder to follow her whenever she decided to step down from her position. Then the war came. The Sith Empire’s declaration of war on the Republic started with a blitz on the Outer Rim territories. Not long after hostilities began, the serving Supreme Chancellor, Aiden Baoont of Onderon, was mysteriously assassinated. The Galactic Senate selected Naaden to follow the now-late Chancellor Baoont, and she appointed Alder to finish the rest of her term. He accepted gladly. The war’s early years were unkind to the Republic. World after world fell to the Sith onslaught, and the Core Worlds grew ever more nervous at the increasingly grim outlook. The Mandalorians, drubbed into silence a half-century earlier, launched a vengeful crusade of their own, only worsening the Republic’s position. More and more, the Galactic Senate’s worries turned to finding ways to stem the bleeding as the Sith advanced unabated. One night, on Alderaan of all places, the Sith struck Alder in a way he’d never expected. It was a fundraising dinner at the Palazzo di Luce. Alder was unable to attend, but his mother and father both did. Darth Novus and an associate attacked the party, harming dozens of guests with poison slipped into the food. While the worst was prevented — medical responders arrived in time to save most of the victims — his father experienced a particularly strong reaction to the poison. Had the responders, who were delayed, arrived earlier, Ousan might have survived. The attack on the Palazzo di Luce changed Alder. After he finished mourning his father, he returned to the Senate with a renewed vigor and a much more hardline stance against the Sith. One of his first major accomplishments, that gained him recognition throughout the Senate, was to push for an emergency funding program to expedite the completion of the Enduring Flame, the Republic’s long-awaited dreadnought. It took months of work, but the measure, which Alder authored, ultimately passed overwhelmingly, with a hearty endorsement from Naaden. The program didn’t come a moment too soon. The Flam was only a few weeks out of the shipyards when the Sith launched an assault on Coruscant. The Republic turned back the attackers, which ultimately turned the tide of the war, with no small help from the mighty dreadnought. One success led to another for Alder, who became a force to be reckoned with in the Senate. He easily won re-election after Naaden’s term expired and by the war’s end, was a prominent voice from one of the Republic’s most prominent worlds. He felt no small disappointment that the war ended in an armistice, rather than the Republic continuing to push against the Sith, but still, he understood the reality of the situation. Both the Empire and Republic had exhausted themselves, and neither expected the Peace of Prazhi to be the true end to the conflict. Shortly after the treaty’s signature, Naaden announced that she would not seek another term as Chancellor. It came as some surprise to Alder that he, with a wonder of encouragement from his mentor, was nominated to be the next Supreme Chancellor. Now a seasoned politician, he gratefully accepted the nomination and has assumed the role with a carefully selected set of advisors to help him guide the Republic through uncertain times. While he holds no love for the Sith Empire, Alder has committed the Republic to fortify itself and making overtures to independent governments to build ties and strengthen alliances. He will ensure, to the best of his abilities, that the Republic is ready for whatever future threats arise. |
