Senate Pardons officers who fired on Sith fleet
The Galactic Senate has narrowly voted to pardon a group of Republic Navy officers accused of violating the Joint Military Operations Command agreement after the Battle of Nar Shaddaa. The agreement forged a temporary alliance between the Galactic Republic and Sovereign Sith Empire during the Archeri Crisis.
Officers leading Battle Group Vespado in the naval engagement against the Archeri Chorus over Nar Shaddaa quickly opened fire on Sith vessels in the battle’s aftermath, destroying one vessel and damaging several others.
Today’s Senate vote fell along emerging fault lines between the Outer Rim and Core Worlds within the governing body. A coalition of Senators representing Outer Rim worlds now under Sith occupation — led by the influential Vonar Kenten, of Dantooine — swayed enough fellow members to grant pardons to the officers and deny the Republic military further avenues to pursue criminal investigation into the officers. Kenten has long advocated for the Republic to take a harsher stance against the Empire.
“Captain Diya Smarcan’s story is like that of many of the fighting men and women in the Republic military,” Kenten said during the proceedings. “She joined the Navy to fight against Imperial aggression after losing her home in the Sith’s ruthless, bloodthirsty invasion.
“She served with honor and distinction during the war and has waited restlessly to see her home freed from Sith tyranny,” he continued. “Already, we have dragged her good name through the mud, stripped her of her rank and duty to serve and for what — for honoring the oath she took to defend the Republic? It boggles the mind that we would now even consider branding her a criminal for taking a stand against the very tyrants who would burn this Senate to the ground if given the chance.”
Supreme Chancellor Alder Vrieska’s office issued a statement expressing “disappointment” in the Senate’s decision.
“While we remain deeply concerned for those worlds that remain under Sith occupation, the Republic has stood for millennia on the rule of law,” the Chancellor’s statement says. “We stand strong not only through force of arms but by the belief of our allies that we will abide by our word, once given. This decision will do grave harm to the Republic’s reputation and our ability to ensure peace and stability through the wider Galaxy.”
