Bio:
Early Life
Kane Ryder was born twenty-five years ago on the planet of Alderaan, raised by his adoptive parents - two middle-class folk who refused to tell him of his true lineage, whatever their reasons may be. Even though he had never met his mother, Kane's “parents” told him everything about her – how kind and caring she was, what she looked like, how she acted, and why she left her baby son. They didn't tell the young boy his mother's name, however.
Due to a strange circumstance, his mother had left him in the care of two family friends. Of course, they had agreed to take the boy under their wing, and he was received by warm, open arms. The identity of Kane's father was unknown to even his adoptive parents – his mother had never told them the reasoning behind her pregnancy. Some things were better left unsaid. He kept his true family name - Ryder. At least they told him that much.
Kane was isolated most of his life, preferring to play by himself than with his peers. He was different, and that made him seem "weird". In his early childhood, he did befriend a few other social outcasts – a young, freakishly shy boy named Teghan, and an older, tomboy of a girl called Trista. Together, the three made the perfect trio. It was in his early years that Kane formed his first attachments, something the Jedi would later warn against.
Kane was identified at the age of five. His presence hadn't been kept from the Jedi for very long. Because of his obvious strength in the Force, a scout was immediately sent to locate the boy and bring him to the temple on Dantooine. At first, Kane didn't take to his new responsibilities with much enthusiasm. He almost refused the offer because he didn't want to leave his family and friends behind. After days of convincing from his adoptive parents, Kane finally decided to leave his previous life behind him and study to become a Jedi. Once he finally accepted his destiny, his life as a Youngling at the Jedi Temple became much easier.
Kane took quickly to his studies. He was finally where he belonged. His adoptive parents did send him letters or holos every once in a while, and that was enough to keep him going. Kane was far more impressive to the Masters than any of the others Younglings. He was extremely talented, have mastered the first lightsaber form a few years before the others. Even his Force capabilities far surpassed that of a normal Jedi his age.
Youngling Years
Kane wasn't attached to many students at the Jedi Temple. None of them quite understood him. He was shy and kept to himself most of the time, preferring to study rather than play and goof around. At first, his only “friends” were the Jedi Masters. A year passed without any luck fitting in, and then Lahna came along. She was a year younger than Kane, having been sent to train as a Youngling from her home on Coruscant. Although they were complete opposites – Kane was quiet, and Lahna was outspoken and often annoying – they bonded quickly.
When Kane had finished with his studies each day, he would visit Lahna in her room at the temple. They would discuss meaningless things, usually, opening up to each other. It was the first person Kane had ever felt comfortable telling his secrets to, and he formed another attachment without even realizing it.
Only a few months after meeting Lahna, Kane also befriended two boys – Enik and Khalon, the brothers. The four of them spent all of their time together. Every one in a while they would leave the temple, heading a cave that they dubbed “the secret fort” behind the Jedi Temple. It was buried beneath the earth, concealed by a boulder the children placed in the entrance to hide their “fort”. They would play in the cave all day long, mostly imaginary war games. Lahna, amongst all the boys, somehow managed to fit in.
At eleven years, Kane participated in the Jedi Temple Apprentice Tournament to win the admiration of a Master, like a lot of Younglings do. The tournament set thirty-two Younglings or Apprentices against each other, and it consisted of three rounds. The first three matches were between two Jedi in a close combat battle. To win the battle, one had to stun his opponent three times with his training saber. Either that, or his opponent had to yield. Kane won these first matches quickly. He was easily considered one of the stronger Younglings at the tournament. Having won these three matches, round one was concluded. In round two, the semi-finalists were randomly assigned to an opponent. Kane was pitted against a tall, strong boy called Drehsk. The battle lasted longer than the previous ones, and Kane was stunned by Drehsk's saber once; however, Kane managed to distract Drehsk, giving him time to stun Drehsk three times.
With round two ended, it was time for round three. The final three Jedi were to fight to the last man standing. The battle was moved from the Combat Training Chambers to the arena outdoors. Kane was to face off against Jeb, a bigger, older boy much like Drehsk, and his friend Enik. When the match began, Kane and Enik worked together to take out Jeb. Kane predominated the fight (because he had never liked Jeb), and disarmed the other boy, getting carried away and stunning Jeb more than three times with his training saber. This act was noted by the Jedi Masters, but it wasn't treated as a serious issue.
Kane was stronger than Enik, and he over-powered him. When Enik realized that he was beaten, he yielded, and Kane was declared the winner of the tournament. He also attracted the attention of a Jedi Knight named Kel-Tah, who was impressed by Kane's show of strength. He took Kane as his Padawan, even though the two of them were nothing alike.
Early Apprenticeship
During his apprenticeship to Kel-Tah, Kane spent most of his time away from his Master, preferring to study and play alongside his friends. The four of them shared a bond, unlike Kane and Kel-Tah. It was a bond that Kane believed could never be replaced by any Master. The Jedi Council and Kel-Tah noted this problem; if Kane's attachments continued, they would have to do something about it.
Kane and Enik were training in the sparring room together one day, like they often did on their own, when a group of boys led by Jeb entered the room. Kane had never liked Jeb, not even after their fight at the Jedi Temple Apprentice Tournament, but Enik had always had an intense rivalry with the older boy. Enik insulted Jeb, and Jeb retorted by attacking the younger boy. Jeb easily over-powered him, and Kane, in an effort to aide his friend, stepped in and took on Jeb by himself. The two boys dueled with their training sabers, and Kane managed to give Jeb a rather painful beating.
Finally a Jedi Master showed up and took the three boys in for questioning. Jeb was set free – he had told the Jedi Master in charge of discipline that Enik and Kane had started the fight, which, in some respects, was true. Thinking selflessly, Kane told the Master that he had started the fight, even though he had not. By admitting this, he saved his best friend from punishment. Even though he was 'grounded' from the Combat Training Chambers for quite some time, Kane was proud that he had stood up for his friend.
After the duel in the training chambers, Kane was sent to stand before the Jedi Council and his Master, Kel-Tah. The Council explained that attachments were a path to the Dark Side, something that Kane had never known. By attempting to step in and save Enik, he had acted rashly and aggressively. This sort of aggressive behavior could lead him down the dark path in the future. Kane realized his mistake and promised to work on abandoning his attachments. It wasn't going to be easy.
A New Master
After four years of training alongside Kel-Tah, the two went on a mission together to the outskirts of Dantooine, to either redeem or defeat a Jedi who had gone down the Dark Path. They located the Dark Jedi in one of the crystal caves and were attacked. Kane and Kel-Tah fought to defend themselves. When it became clear that the Dark Jedi couldn't overpower the two of them, he gave up the fight. Kel-Tah explained how he the Council would forgive him if he turned from the dark path and returned to the temple – that all of his crimes would be forgotten. The Dark Jedi would have none of it.
Angry with himself and Kel-Tah, the Dark Jedi attacked; he managed to stab Kel-Tah in the ribs, and the Jedi Master died instantly. Even though Kane was terrified, he thought through the situation. He could either try to run and be killed, or he could try to be brave and be killed. Either way, he would die. The Dark Jedi readied his weapon, but he didn't immediately strike the boy down. Instead he listened to what Kane had to say.
Kane told him that the Jedi would indeed forgive him, and the Dark Side would lead to nothing but unhappiness. His actions would haunt him forever unless he accepted the fact that the Dark Side was the wrong path to take. After Kane had spoken, the Dark Jedi put away his weapon and ran away. Kane wasn't able to convince him to return to the Jedi Temple, but he survived the confrontation with the Dark Jedi.
Kane then knelt beside his Master to discover he was dead. He hadn't shared a bond with Kel-Tah, but he had appreciated his teachings and respected him, and he mourned for him as he would any friend or family member. Kane oftentimes wondered that if it was difficult to let Kel-Tah go, how difficult would it be to let one of his friends go?
After returning to the Jedi Temple, Kane told his story to the Council. They praised him for his dedication and bravery, but also mourned the unexpected loss of Kel-Tah. It was then that Kane realized any mission could be a dangerous one. He should always be prepared to face death.
A few months after Kel-Tah's death, a Master named Kemuel Voss met with Kane and discussed the possibility of becoming his Master. The two instantly connected, and Kane agreed to be Master Voss' Padawan. A bond between the two of them instantly formed, filling the hole where Kel-Tah had been and more. Kane not only began to respect and admire Kemuel – he cared for him.
Jedi Training
Kane progressed quickly through his studies with his new Master, picking up on lightsaber forms other than Shii-Cho, which he had already nearly mastered. He spent most of his time practicing more aggressive forms like Ataru, and outside of his training sessions he sparred alone, also honing his Force Powers. Kane was a true prodigy, or so the other Padawans claimed.
His master knew of Kane's weaknesses and sought to exploit them, teaching him patience and other methods of fighting that weren't fueled only by hate and aggression. He taught the boy to rely wholly on the Force, letting it guide him, striking out at his enemies only for justice. Kane didn't grasp these concepts quickly.
With years of training, Kane steadily began to spend less time on strong, heavy styles of fighting. Although he wasn't a Force expert, he did acknowledge the Force to win his duels. Due to his Master's guidance, Kane became a completely different person. He became calmer and more secluded, and found it easier to sit in silence and meditate than take out his anger on others. This only led him closer to the Force. He would oftentimes spend hours mediating in the room of fountains, thinking about the future. Where would it take him if he let his aggression and attachments get the better of him? He would probably be that Dark Jedi in the crystal caves...
The First Mission
Kane and Master Voss were sent on their first mission together when Kane was sixteen years old. Two Jedi teams would be required for the dangerous assignment. Kane and Kemuel were chosen to accompany Lahna, Kane's old friend, and her Master Anna Starr to Kashyyk. Their duty was to go to the Wookiee planet and retrieve a stolen hologram from the library on Coruscant, discover who the thief was, and bring the hologram back safely to the library.
The four left immediately, flying to Kashyyk and asking around town for the hologram. They soon discovered that a Force-sensitive had landed on Kashyyk from a local, and that the suspicious man had headed to the center of town somewhere. The Jedi tracked him down, catching the man in the street. The encounter quickly became an aggressive one when the man pulled out a lightsaber on the two. Kane, Kemuel, Anna, and Lahna easily won the fight, disarming the man and bringing him to Coruscant for questioning. The hologram was returned unscathed.
When the two teams returned to Dantooine, Kemuel praised Kane for working together with Lahna and Master Starr to locate the thief and bring him to justice. Kane had proven that he could work well with others to complete a mission, something that was required of all Jedi.
Trials of Skill and Courage
When Kane was twenty, he and his Master were sent on a mission to a small planet in the Outer Rim, a planet unknown to most. The Jedi Council had discovered that a group of Dark Jedi had been traveling to and from the planet, and their activity was becoming increasingly suspicious. The two Jedi were sent to find out why the enemy was traveling to the planet.
Kane and Kemuel spent quite some time on the planet. They befriended a young local boy named Alem, who helped them locate the enemy who had been hiding out in one of the planet's caves. Before entering the caves and facing the Dark Jedi, Kemuel stopped to make Kane promise that whatever happened, and however hopeless things may seem, he would not give in to the enemy. Of course, Kane promised. If only he had known what that really meant...
When the two caught up to the Dark Jedi, they fought. Thinking that the Dark Jedi were mediocre, Kane underestimated them. Kane quickly dealt a fatal blow to one, and then the Padawan joined his Master in dueling the remaining Dark Jedi, a dual-wielding Jar'Kai adept. The Master and Apprentice worked well together. Kemuel used the most defensive of the lightsaber forms, blocking each of their enemy's blows, and Kane used the most offensive form, Ataru, to strike out at their opponent; however, Kemuel lowered his defenses for only a moment, and the Dark Jedi managed to lay a blow.
Kane, thinking that his Master had been dealt a fatal blow, became enraged and dueled the dual-wielder alone. No matter how hopeless things may seem, he had to push through the duel, even if it meant dying in the end And even though he was exhausted from the duel and less experienced than his opponent, he managed to get past her defenses and disarm her, removing her arm in one clean stroke. When his lightsaber was held to the woman's throat, the Jedi Padawan did not give in to his anger and kill her to avenge Kemuel. Instead, he let her go, deciding it was more important to be by his Master's side. Miraculously, Kemuel was still alive; his injuries weren't as bad as Kane had predicted. He carried Kemuel back to the local boy's house.
The boy's grandfather, and his only living relative, helped care for the two Jedi, but it was obvious that Kemuel would need more medical attention than he could offer. Kane accepted this and left the planet, taking his Master back to Dantooine to be treated. It would take years for Kemuel to fully recover, and Kane never truly got over his encounter with the Dark Jedi.
By proving to his Master and the Jedi Council that he could fight courageously in battle no matter the odds, Kane was awarded the achievement of having completed the Trial of Courage; however, he also got a taste of his true self. When all was lost and he had thought Kemuel dead, Kane had almost given in to his anger. What would have happened if he had given in? What if he hadn't been strong enough? Kane meditated on this for days, searching for an answer.
Trials of the Flesh and Spirit
A year after the Trial of Courage, Kane's friend Enik came to him, telling the him that he and his brother Khalon were being sent on a secret mission to the planet of Corellia. He wouldn't tell Kane why he was being sent to Corellia – it was top secret, supposedly. Kane was sad to see his friend leave, but he didn't pester the man about it any more than he had to. Enik left soon after he had informed Kane of his departure. Kane didn't hear from him for several weeks, until he finally returned, utterly broken and in despair. His younger brother Khalon had been killed during the mission.
Enik delved into a dark time of depression, hardly ever speaking to anyone - not even his best friends. Kane feared for his friend's well-being, but he could do nothing about it. He went to the Council to ask for guidance and told him the same. This was something a trial that Enik was to take on his own. No one could save him from himself. But Kane didn't let it go.
He meditated constantly, searching for something – anything – that would help his friend. In his quest to find an answer, he neglected his own well-being. When it became obvious that Enik was heading down the dark path, Kane couldn't let him go. He wouldn't let him go. His attachment and dedication to his friend got the better of him. During his depression, Lahna would sometimes visit Kane and try to convince him to give up, to let Enik travel down the path on his own. She expressed her true feelings for Kane, telling him that she cared about him, maybe even loved him.
When Kane found a letter from Enik saying that he had left the temple, he went in search of his friend. Lahna went with him, determined to keep him safe. Together they found Enik in “the secret fort” cave from their childhood. Enik had gone there of all places, probably to reminisce on good times before he left; however, Enik was angry at having being followed and attacked his old friend. He had fallen to the Dark Side and there was nothing Kane could do about it. Kane dueled his friend in defense only; the last thing he wanted to do was kill him.
Enik had become a better swordsman since the last time they had sparred. Kane and Lahna fought side by side like they used to do as young Padawans, feeding off of each other's strengths and weaknesses. Kane guarded Lahna as best as he could, but when he lowered his defenses for a moment, Enik broke through and managed to stab Lahna.
Instantly, Kane gave up the fight to go to Lahna's side. Enik allowed them both to live and fled the caves, and Kane never saw him again. He didn't know why he gave up the fight. Kane could have just as easily killed Enik in his rage. Instead, he went to his fallen friend's side.
Lahna died in Kane's arms that day, and Kane realized that if he hadn't given in to his attachments in the first place her death could have been prevented. Kane had spent years meditating, searching for an answer, and only then did he receive one. Attachments led to the Dark Side, and he would never again attach himself to anyone.
It was later decided by the council that by overcoming the loss of his friends and finding the answer to his problems within himself, he had completed the Trial of the Flesh and the Trial of the Spirit. On the outside, Kane was a quiet, collected individual On the inside, he had been unstable. During the trials he had tamed the unstable part of himself.
Kane the Jedi Knight
A few months after he had completed the Trials of the Flesh and the Spirit, and when he was twenty-two years old, Kane's Knighting ceremony took place. His Master cut declared him a true Jedi and cut his braid, ending the Apprenticeship. Although he was now a Jedi Knight, Kane remained close to his Master and studied alongside him, honing his skills. As the months went by, Kane practiced his Ataru form less and less, instead focusing on Soresu. Telepathy was also a strong skill of his.
Now that he was no longer a Padawan and was free to choose what he wanted to do with his life, Kane went on as many missions as possible, determined to impress the Council. Someday he may wish to become a Jedi Master and teach others the way of the Force, but not anytime soon.

Kane Ryder climbed the final step to the Jedi Temple hesitantly, almost afraid to return after what he had done. He had given in to his anger, something that was forbidden. It was against the Jedi Code, and Kane had been taught against all of his life. In a vain attempt to satisfy his rage, Kane had led a Jedi Strike team in an attempt to assassinate the Dark Lord of the Sith. And his plan had failed. Instead of gaining the favor of the Senate, he had pushed them farther away. Because of him, the Jedi were no longer the Protectors of the Galaxy. Because of him, the Sith Empire would rule.
Who's idea had it been? His. It had been his plan. Kane had carefully plotted out a way to assassinate the Dark Lord of the Sith for nearly a month. He had asked only the greatest warriors among the Jedi Order to aide him. He had told the Jedi Council, of course. They hadn't necessarily agreed, but they didn't speak out against his absurd idea. And now, Kane felt a pang of guilt. He was to blame. He may have even brought about the fall of the Jedi Order itself. All because he couldn't control his anger.
Kane had felt like this before – helpless, lost, depressed, at fault. But the one he would normally turn to in these types of situations was gone forever. He had never gotten over her death . . . Now who could he possibly ask for help? Not any of the Council Members. Kane didn't know any of them personally; they would think him a fool for going through with his mission. They would blame him. His current Padawan, Carth, would never understand. No matter how much Kane may care about him, Carth wouldn't be able to help him. The only other person that Kane could think of was his old Padawan, now a Jedi Knight. But Alem was away on a mission to the Outer Rim.
Carth was his only option.
And so, with a deep breath, Kane pushed himself forward, climbing the last stair. He took slow steps forward until he had reached the giant doors that led to the Jedi Temple. Then, after fixing a fold in his robes and pushing a stray strand of brown hair out of his eyes, he pushed open the door and made his way inside.
The temple was beautiful – just as he had remembered it. Kane hadn't been here in so long, and as he stepped through the doorway, memories flooded his mind – both good and bad. The first time he had entered the grand Jedi Temple as an excited and curious young boy, and this time, as a frightened Jedi Master. And then, all of his visits in between. Why was he reminiscing? Even he didn't know the answer to that questions. The memories hit him hard, for some unexplainable reason.
This day, however, he knew that he wasn't welcome. As he entered the main room, the few Jedi that roamed the hallways looked in his direction, casting him disapproving glances, shaking their heads . . . He ignored them, turning to the right almost immediately, heading for Carth's room. At this time of the morning, his young Padawan would still be sound asleep. Kane knew that Carth could be found at the temple this day. There were no important missions that were in need of inexperienced Jedi Padawans at the moment. Where else would he be?
Once he had reached Carth's room, Kane knocked sharply on the door, standing back after he had done so to wait. The Jedi Master's eyes were fixed on the floor in a nervous manner, and he folded his hands into his robes like he normally did when out of sorts. They were both bad habits.
Carth wouldn't understand what it felt like to be a failure, an outcast in the Jedi Temple, but at least he was someone to talk to. And Kane had never told the young man much about his past. Perhaps this would be the perfect opportunity for an in depth conversation, instead of a harsh lesson. It could be good for the both of them.
