Planet Name: Retal
Planet Type: Terrestrial, varied terrain, and vast ocean
Habitable: Yes
System: Retal, Outer Rim, between Endor and Bakura (D-1 on the map)
Terrain Overview: Retal is a small planet, nestled neatly in the regions of space between Bakura and Endor. It is not directly in line between these two planet systems, but off to the side in the middle. Retal is the only planet in its system.
Retal has one major continent with two islands, one on either side off the coasts. The rest of Retal consists of ocean, serving its vast fishing industry. The islands--Island of Tranquility and Island of Pearls--are both tropical in nature, they being so close to the equator. The mainland consists of ice caps at the north and south poles--note: the south pole's ice cap is more spectacular--and below that the land becomes warmer in climate as one goes southward and northward. Then it turns quite tropical near the equator.
Once away from the ice caps--and the stunning mountain ranges near them--one can begin to view green, hilly, sweeping plains full of a lush grass called "trensii;" it is a highly nutritious green, serving as a food for most species on Retal.
After the sweeping grasslands and intermittent trees, the eyes--or any species ocular devices--are treated to the forests of Retal that serve as notable places to discover lakes. Many trees are bunched together in a circular fashion and have lakes nestled within them. In the southern hemisphere, most lakes are fed by underground springs, hence there are not many rivers. In the northern hemisphere, however, the opposite about lakes is true.
Near the equator the terrain turns quite tropical and the beaches become a popular tourist attraction. The ground is quite flat here, making walking or biking a treat.
Overall, Retal is a planet of varying terrains ranging from tundra to tropical. Most of the planet is temperate with just a bit of steppe right near the meridian and equatorial lines smack in the middle of the main continent.
Notable Geographic Features: The Verdant Jungle, Wilkkin Forest, Mount Batachi, Island of Tranquility, Bay of Mourning,
This geographic wonder is catagorized by its vast expanse--it nearly spans the width of the continent and covers nearly a third of the breadth. The trees in it vary from coniferous, deciduous, and tropical. It starts near the southern mountain range and ranges up nearly to the Lake of the Eye, near the middle of the northern hemisphere. This natural wonder is an incredible source of tourism and the logging industry keeps the government busy with enforcing restrictions, preserving the natural beauty of this gorgeous forest.
The Wilkkin Forest is composed of wilkkin trees--no kidding, right? These trees are tall, black hardwoods. They are extraordinarily dense, taking platinum blades tipped with diamonds to cut. Because of the density of the tree, it is very heavy and retrieving it from the forest can prove difficult to the simple people of Retal. Each family on Retal living in non-tropical or steppe regions is allotted one wilkkin tree each year to cut down and use for warmth. One of the seventy-foot monster trees will last a family in the coldest regions all winter if they allocate the wood properly. The tall black trees serve also as a coveted wood with which to make desks. If a Retallain is shrewd with his tree, he may have enough to make a beautiful desk, or he may be able to get enough from someone who has extra to make one of these highly valued prizes.
This massive mountain is a heavy crag, providing protection to those living in its shadow. It is said that with Mount Batachi at one's back, one can fight off any enemy...or retreat into the mountain and never be found again. Found after the excavated foothills of the Southern Mountain Range, this mount stands tall, withstanding all tests of time. However, it is not because of the mountains height it is considered special. No, it is because of the species of animal that lives on it. If you're reading this, you'll have to wait for the species section to find out which species this is...
This island's name is not what it seems. It sounds like a family vacation retreat. It is far from it... The reason the island is called such is because the amount of voracious, carnivorous animals on the island kill and proceed to consume any humanoids that enter the island. Death is reckoned to be tranquil, peaceful, a state of nothingness. Hence, the island is tranquil...from a certain, twisted point of view.
This expansive bay in the northwestern part of the Northern Hemisphere is home to the best crab fishing on Retal. The large crabs are sold as a delicious food. It is called Mourning because of the amount of men lost during crabbing season and the number of widows the bay has made.
Capital City: Lokken
Major cities:Creslian City, Fatahii City, Sercom City, Swilkee City, Operii City, Tanii City, Uletal City
Sentient species: Humans, Native Retallians, Great Dragons, Great Wolves (unknown to Retallians as a sentient species)
The Native Retallian people are tribal people living among the humans of Retal to whom they'd ceded the planet. This race is characterized by beings above average human height (6 feet two inches average for Retallian males, and six feet is average for Retallian females) and a gaunt look about them. However, their muscles are genetically tighter and leaner than humans. A Native Retallian is stronger than a human, but looks almost emaciated. They are more intelligent than humans--which to some is not too difficult to accomplish--and their loyalty to their family is fierce.
Here we are, the inhabitants of Mount Batachi. The massive, one-hundred foot long fire-breathing beasts watch over the goings-on of the non-sentient species of Retal, regulating their populations and everything about the planet other than for what the Retallians and Native Retallians care. The beings are hyper-intelligent and are covered with gold-colored scales.
Not much is known about these creatures. They stand five feet tall at the shoulder and are ferocious beasts, generally considered semi-sentient, though it is unknown to the people of Retal why the Great Wolves' population is not thinned by the Great Dragons as the Dragons thin every other non-sentient population levels...
Languages: Basic, Ancient Retallian, varying dialects
Non-Sentient species of note:Fire Dragon, Water Dragon, Force Dragon
These dragons live near the volcanoes of the Southern Mountain Chain. They are covered in red scales and average around forty feet in length. Like all dragons on Retal, they breath fire.
These dragons live near the vast coastline and mostly eat fish. They are the same length as Fire Dragons and are covered with blue scales.
These colorful creatures, pasted with blue, red, and green scales, can access and create a boon in the Force for Force users around. They are semi-sentient, but their connection with the Force makes them all but sentient. They are only about three feet long, standing two feet high, but that special bond in the Force they have makes them very powerful...
Retal was discovered about four-hundred years ago by settlers looking for a new planet to call their own. They were en route from Bakura to Endor when their failing hyperdrives pushed them to the Retal System where they saw this blue floating gem rotating around its medium sized star.
The settlers found themselves welcomed by the Native Retallians, who offered them a fresh start if they would abide by the laws of the Native Retallians.
The settlers agreed and found themselves a plot of land where all eleven families could start their new lives. At first, the humans were happy to be under the tutelage and rule of the natives.
However, over time, ten of the human families became unsettled by the prospect of being ruled even further by the Native Retallians. The only family in opposition to the settlers was the family Airyl. They attempted to set up negotiations...and succeeded. The other ten families were spared by the quick thinking James Airyl, who expertly made it his personal goal o settle the farming land dispute. He succeeded in his goal and soon Native Retallians and the settlers--now called Retallians--were living together in peace.
The Retallians grew stronger and stronger gaining more momentum and more people...calling in other settlers from Coruscant to live on the lush planet. All to easily, the Retallians outnumbered the Native Retallians and soon the planet was ceded to the humans who work in close conjunction with the Native Retallians. That close connection continues down to this day.
