Planet Name: Merra (Meh-Rah)
Planet Type: Terrestrial, Arid
Habitable: Mostly
System: Kee’pah – Nearest Planet(s)/systems; Zeta, Revyia (Located nearly perfectly between them)
Moon(s): Barr, Parah, and Eesofoh
Terrain Overview:
Merra is a mid-sized terrestrial planet on the fringes of the known galaxy. It’s distance from the galactic center has allowed it to remain largely unaltered by Republic affairs, though it has been said this is because of it’s lack of discovered resource. Which remains true. The planet itself produces few desirable minerals: Gold, some platinum and copper, and iron (though all in sparse quantity), and with no plant life to speak of, it would seem the only resource of note would be the fuel yards in the northern hemisphere.
Mesas, glacial canyons, and volcanic mountains make up the majority of the landscape, with only rocky desert separating them. In areas closer to the poles, where the temperature is less hostile, small patches of thick rough grass can be found. The Dema’rella (the name of a large canyon) encompasses half of the planet, running from the northern pole and down south, past the equator, through the Dema’merra, a region which is completely uninhabitable due to the high temperatures.
The only water source left on the planet is found in large underground cavers called, Merra’Onea. These are the only remnants of the once vibrant world that once was. They are often spread over several miles, though never are they deeper than about thirty feet at their deepest; this is however the only source of native water, and as such has collected several various forms of plant and animal life. Though mostly cactus and crustacean live near these pools, the animals of the surface will venture into the caves and caverns to escape the heat of the world and live closer to the water supply.
Notable Geographic Features:
On the equator, in the dema’merra, there is one lone mountain, though it is the tallest on the planet. It was rumored to have been created during the blast which killed off the planets ecosystem; though geological evidence suggests that this spot had once been a large geyser located at the northern pole, and rather the blast had merely caused polar mayhem and displaced the strange mountain.
This fact has earned it the name Onea’lira, or “water’s life”, where the Koi’merra believed the mountain to have been the birthplace of all of the planets water (before the blast). It is far more likely that this mountain was a result of millennia of geyser activity causing the large buildup of sulfur that makes up the mountain’s insides and resulted in a large volcanic eruption at some point.
Onea’lira is considered a sacred place, and those who dare to make the pilgrimage into the dema’merra, say that it’s power is unmatched. Descriptions of the whole atmosphere surrounding the mountain suggest that it is rich with the living force, as those who return say that the very earth is alive.
The southern region surrounding the city of Crri’inth, is a grouping of mesas which ring the whole of the city. These used to be used as lookouts during times of war, though now merely act as the spaceports; the only place outsiders are allowed to land, by Koi’merran law.
Capital City: Crri’inth (C-rr-ee-nith)
Major cities:
Geth
Pah’rea
Gorith
Tar Mira
Bolisth
Jeb’Jeba
Sentient species: Koi’merra
Non-Sentient species of note:
Krayt Dragon (Imported for their milk)
Bantha
Dewback
Eopie
Womprat
Ronto
History:
Merra formed sometime during 9,000,000 BBY. It was strangely the only planet to develop in it’s system, though reasons for this are unknown. It was stable enough to take it’s three moons by roughly 7,300,000 BBY. By 6,670,000 BBY life had begun to form and evolve, as an atmosphere had developed enough to keep Kee’pah’s rays at bay.
Merra was once a lush forested planet; complete with rivers, oceans, icy poles, and a whole host of creatures. This however was not to last. In 5,900,000 BBY, after experiencing a relatively short period of life, the back end of a supernova had rocked the planet’s ecosystem. The ozone and much of the atmosphere was destroyed, causing a global extinction of nearly all forms of life, and allowing Kee’pah’s rays to scorch the planet, drying the surface oceans, and destroying all plant life.
It wasn’t until roughly 2,000,000 BBY that the atmosphere had healed enough to keep the solar radiation at bay and allow live to begin once again. It was some where near 1,500,000 that the Koi’merra began to evolve in the northern hemisphere, furthest from the sun. Surface plant life wouldn’t begin to show for another several hundred thousand years, and even at that the patches of rough grass didn’t constitute real fauna.
Currently it is inhabited by the Koi’merra, and undergoing negotiations with the Republic. Seeing that they have not been admitted into the republic yet, the Koi’merran have decided to keep the planet neutral; though it was widely believed that this is only to show the lack of need for the Republic, and is really a ploy to make the planet a more desirable candidate.
