Bio:
Born to Governor Jobim Alithma of Chandrila and his Echani mistress, Polinna, Tanis’ early life was uncertain at best. When her mother died during childbirth, it was decided that Governor Alithma would “adopt” the baby girl into his household, as a sign of Chandrilan goodwill.
For the first few years of her life as Governor Alithma’s “adopted” daughter, Tanis got on astoundingly well with her half-brother and sister, Tobin and Shen. Her stepmother however, had constant suspicions that the Governor’s adoption of Tanis into the family was more complicated than it seemed – having always had suspicions about the Governor’s “friendship” with Tanis’ mother.
Nevertheless, it wasn’t until Tanis’ seventh birthday that Lieda Alithma finally decided to speak out against her husband’s infidelity. Such things are to be expected in High Society however, and after a speedy cover-up the affair was never mentioned again. The subsequent breakdown in the Alithma’s marriage however, greatly reduced the Governor’s confidence, and in the next Chandrilan House election, he lost in a landslide victory for his opponent.
After this, the Alithma’s family life broke down, and Jobim and Lieda finally decided that a divorce was necessary. Lieda took Tobin and Shen with her, but Jobim revealed to Tanis (now ten) that he was her real father. At first she was confused and a little hurt by the news, but she soon realised that she still loved her father just as much as she had always done – perhaps more – and decided to move with him to his dacha by the shores of Lake Sah’ot. It was then that Tanis began her intensive – and traditional – training in the combative ways of the Echani, under an Echani elder whom the Governor had contacted as soon as the family had split up. The elder was housed in the family’s dacha, which meant that Tanis was able to train intensively every day, and by age thirteen, her Echani blood had allowed her to become a swordswoman to rival most pure human opponents.
By age fifteen, Tanis decided that she wanted to enter a career in the military. Deciding that she did not want to fight as a mere foot soldier, her naturally quick reflexes dictated that she enter service as a fighter pilot. As soon as she left education at age seventeen, she signed up to the Galactic Republic’s Fighter Corps and began intensive training as a fighter pilot. Over her time as a pilot, she proved herself to be naturally skilled at flying, embarking on many sorties for the Galactic Republic Fighter Corps and Navy.
It was in the Fighter Corps that Tanis met the one man with whom she was to fall in love: Aryn Grella. Aryn, a blue-skinned Twi’lek from Coruscant, was a fellow fighter pilot, whose skills in the cockpit almost matched her own. The two began a loving romance, and even made plans to marry as soon as they returned to civilian life on leave. These plans were not to come to fruition.
On a simple mission for the Fighter Corps, Tanis (now twenty-two) and Aryn were sent deep into the Deep Core along with eight other skilled pilots. Their task was to hunt down and destroy a pirate ship that had been preying on the few ships brave enough to venture to the few inhabited worlds in this tightly packed region of space. The battle was a success. Almost.
The squadron of fighters succeeded in destroying the pirates, but Aryn’s Aurek experienced a system malfunction, and as he attempted to re-enter the carrier on which they had travelled to the battle, his ship was mistaken for a pirate and shot down. Tanis was simultaneously wracked with anguish, fury and guilt and left the Fighter Corps the very same day. Not wanting to completely remove herself from service to the Republic however, she made the decision to join the Navy as an officer.
After her training, her Naval career was even more of a success than her Fighter Corps one. Her first posting – at the age of twenty-four – was as an ensign aboard the RSS Fearless an Inexpugnable-Class Cruiser. Her posting aboard the ship was successful, and within a year, she had been transferred to a Hammerhead-Class Assault Cruiser, the RSS Bantha as Lieutenant. Soon rising to the rank of Commander aboard the same ship, Tanis had a hand in many major Republic campaigns against various different opponents – some more sinister than others. Finally, at the age of just twenty-seven, Tanis Alithma was promoted to the rank of Captain and given command of a lowly patrol ship, the Foray-Class Republic Blockade Runner RSS Tython.
It is was whilst in command of the Tython that Tanis encountered one of her deadliest foes. During the course of what should have been a simple patrol mission, her ship was assaulted by a group of three pirate vessels. Fighting back, she barely managed to escape with her ship intact, and, travelling via Telos IV, managed to crawl slowly back to the Kuat Drive Yards.
Upon arrival, she expected she would have to face rather grave consequences after her defeat at the hand of a few pirates. However, quite the opposite was true. In reality, she was given command of a battlegroup previously headed by Commander Davis Cari'Tan, an experienced Shistavenen officer. At first she - and most likely he - resented the decision, but soon the two began to talk, and a new friendship blossomed.

Captain Tanis Alithma of the Hammerhead-Class Cruiser, RSS Tython strode onto her ship’s bridge, taking silent pleasure in the sight of so many loyal officers deep in concentration. Around her, numerous computers and displays flashed and beeped, assuring her that all was well with the Galaxy.
“Commander,” she said sternly to a small green Rodian, “is there anything to report?”
“No, Ma’am.” Replied the Rodian curtly, turning back to a large, blue data display. “The only minor change…” he stopped short as a trio of oddly shaped blips appeared on the screen.
”Hold on. What…”
He was again cut short, as the Tython’s bridge was rocked violently by the simultaneous impact of several heavy-duty turbolasers.
”To battle stations!” Shouted Captain Alithma, in as controlled a voice as she could muster. “Prepare to return fire!”
She practically ran to the fore viewport and stared in what could only be described as horror at the three monstrosities bearing down on her ship. All three ships were grey in colour, with a blocky forward bridge and four sets of four engines mounted in aft nacelles.
“What in the Galaxy are those things?” She yelled a little abruptly at a young lieutenant, who promptly began trawling through various screens and readouts to find the appropriate information.
“Underworld-Class Taris Corvettes, Sir, err, Ma’am.” He said after a while. The bridge rocked furiously once more, and the sound of a small explosion emanated from somewhere above them.
“Target fire on the nearest ship!” She called to the bridge in general. “We’ll have to take them out systematically.” Making a few quick calculations, she turned to the ship’s pilot. “Right, let’s see if we can’t surprise these Kath Hounds. Increase speed full. Try to overshoot them so that we might attack from the rear.”
She turned back to the bridge and relayed orders to continue strafing the nearest ship as they shot past it. The manoeuvre paid off, and as the Tython accelerated past the nearest corvette, the grey ship began to explode in myriad flowers of red flame.
”Come about!” She ordered the pilot. “Now, focus fire on the rear ship before they have time to turn around!”
The ship’s gunners did so, and soon the second ship was beginning to come apart, too. “Good!” She shouted to no one in particular. “Now…”
An almighty explosion tore through the Tython as the first ship – which had not been completely destroyed by the Tython’s attack – unleashed a devastating volley of turbolaser fire on her engines. All lights went out.
As the smoke cleared, Captain Alithma called out croakily. “Restore emergency power! See whether the commlinks or the Hyperdrive is working. Whichever is, use it!”
A few moments of frantic activity later, and red light flooded the stricken bridge. Another voice called back.
”Hyperdrive is just about active, Ma’am. We only have enough fuel to make a small jump though…”
Tanis considered this for a moment.
”And the comms aren’t active?”
“No, Ma’am.”
”Programme coordinates for Telos IV. And be quick about it!”
As she spoke, a squadron of small ships leaked from the side of the third corvette, making a deadly beeline for the Tython. They didn’t have much time. A few tense moments passed, the small squadron getting nearer and nearer with every second.
“Done!” Shouted the pilot, as he activated the Hyperdrive. Without wasting another second, the Tython blinked out of existence and into Hyperspace, almost precisely as the squadron arrived at the spot in which her hangar had just been.
