(Before the Order)
The story of Shin Shiden is one of tragedy and not for the faint of heart. When the Morellian was born on Corscant it was not within the confines of a medic bay or even indoors. The unfortunate youth was delivered within the slums of a back alley where none could hear the screams of the child birthing.
Shins father, Toriyama Lee, had been murdered only weeks before his birth. Toriyama had been a small time thief and known in the shadier portions of the Slums as a skilled free lance mercenary that was incredibly lucky, so much so that he had garnered the nick name ‘Sevens’, short for Double Sevens.
Toriyama had taken on a job to difficult for him to complete alone but his pride demanded that he did it without aid. He was to fence a particular item from a Senator of a small outer-rim planet. The mission ended up being a total and complete failure; it seemed Toriyamas luck had finally run out.
With the death of her husband Ahiru Lee, pregnant with their child, had lost the will to continue living. Yet because she was Morellian she knew death would not be swift and so she decided to take her own life. On the night Shin came into the world Ahiru retreated to the most secluded spot she could find within the slums to give birth.
Ahiru was an emotional wreckage by the time Shin was to be born she had fallen into deep depression and became lost in alcohol and drugs. Ahiru passed away from drug overdose and blood lose while holding the crying infant in her arms, covered in dirt, grime, sweat and blood. Shin Shiden was to never know his parents.
The night was not a complete tragedy however and it seemed that some of Toriyamas luck had passed onto his son. A rogue of a man heard the child’s cries from the other end of the alley and came to Shins rescue, in a way.
Shins rescuer was a man by the name of Talen Jerek, a slaver by trade. The greedy man didn’t hesitate to snatch the infant from its mothers arm and hastily retreat back to his humble abode, a ship he used to travel around the outer-rim. It was there he decided what to do with his newest prospect and how he might make the most possible coin out of the situation.
In the end Talen ended up selling the infant child to his brother, a crime syndicate leader in the lowest sections of Coruscant. Yeln Jerek, Yeln specialized in holding illegal games for gambling and one such game was to pit slave children against one another and watch them fight. This was to be Shins destiny it seemed.
Shin was far too young to actually compete in the ‘games’ when he was sold and so like a handful of other children his age he was forced to watch others fight in a hope that it would desensitize him to the brutality of the world. Though Shin was young the repetitive nature of those he saw around him, combined with a harsh reality for a consistent five years certainly had its effects on him.
As could be expected Shin only knew how to express himself through physical acts, almost always violence. When he turned five years of age Shin was forced to compete in his first match. It was a beat or be beaten environment and for six months Shin had to live by that code, that rule of survival.
However, conducting such business on a world like Coruscant could not go unnoticed forever. Yeln Jerek soon bit off more than he could chew and on one such evening, just as Shin was about to enter the ring, his operation was abruptly halted by a pair of Jedi. The Master and his Padawan put an end to Yelns action and brought the man to justice, handing him over to the proper authorities.
Jedi Master Huin was disgusted by what he saw before him, that a man could force children to suffer for the pleasure of others. He also felt sorrow for the children and one in particular stood out to him. The young boy that had been ready to fight just moment’s ago stood staring at him and it was obvious the boy would fight him if the need arose.
Huin could feel the force strongly in young Shin, but along with it he felt strong emotions of fear, hatred and sadness. Huin was touched, for at least one boy he knew he could make a difference. So Master Huin brought Shin into the order to be trained as a Jedi. He knew that Shin was till young and impressionable and there was still hope for him despite his emotional turmoil.
There was a problem however; Shin didn’t actually have a name. Yeln had never bothered to give his slaves names and instead referred to them as numbers, Shin had been known as Twelve. This would not do in the Jedi Order and so Shin, at the age of five, nearly six, was allowed to pick his own name. It took time but Shin eventually picked his current name, it being the name of a hero the other slave children used to talk about from ages past. Shin had always liked those stories the best.
6-12
(Youngling Years)
The earliest years were very frustrating and challenging for Shin, because of his background he was behind the other students in many of the basic classes. The Jedi were always patient with Shin however, helping him along the way and putting in the extra time so that Shin could catch up with his peers.
For being as young as he was Shin showed a desire to learn and a willingness to put in the effort. Truthfully, Shin was afraid that if he didn’t do everything he could that he would be cast back out into the street and that fear drove him for the first two years, until he learned that he didn’t have to fear such harsh treatment from the Jedi.
The young boy also had a temper and an inability to verbally express himself accurately and so Shin got in trouble on several occasions for starting fights. Yet again the Jedi were patient with Shin and knowing his background they did their best to take that energy and divert it to something else, Lightsaber combat.
Learning to use a Lightsaber was incredibly joyful for Shin, the training was fun and challenging and he was something of a prodigy with the Lightsaber. He continued to display a willingness to learn and a stubbornness that wouldn’t allow him to quit when techniques became difficult.
As his class matured Shin was once again left behind in terms of size and muscle mass, because he was a Morellian he matured more slowly. There was no amount of training that could be done that would allow Shin to catch up. The Instructors began to notice that Shin had an inferiority complex; Shin even at the early age of ten had a problem with falling behind his peers. They began to take steps to help him ‘grow’ out of the complex and guide him on a path that was more becoming of a Padawan.
Over the next couple years Shin strived to do as he was old told and completed all of the tasks to the best of his ability. He continued to shine in his lessons with a lightsaber and strove to learn what the instructors were willing to teach him, even going as far as to spend a large portion of his free time either training or practicing taking apart and putting together a lightsaber for the day when he would make his own.
As the day to his thirteenth birthday neared Shin became worried that he would not be selected by a Knight to be his Padawan. Doubt filled the young Morellian’s mind and he did not understand why his peers were becoming Padawans and not himself, did he lack something, did he do something wrong? He knew he was smaller, physically, then even some of the females but he also knew that size mattered not when your ally was the force.
