Okay...so stewing in Afghanistan has limited my ability to be "hip" to the latest movies, yo. But I finally had the chance to see "I am Legend." Anyone else as pissed off about it as I am?
I expect Hollywood to take free license with creative works...but this is NOTHING like the book. There was an irony to the title, something you figure out at the end...and it's meaningless now in the context of the movie.
I'm officially disgusted.

I liked it as a movie. Never read the book. Watch it in I-max and forget that it was made as a book I saw it at I-max and my ears are still ringing. I enjoyed it. If you expect hollywood to get book-movies right, you really haven't been paying attention the last few years. Don't expect movie-games to be any good either.

I thought it was an awesome film, but theres no doubt in my mind that the ending could have been better.
They shoulda gone with the Alternative ending... (I think it's on Wikipedia.)

I wouldn't consider I am legend a book more like a short story cause it wasn't really that long to begin with. The movie was pretty good, but not as good as the short story...

I don't expect for Hollywood to do things by the book..and bringing it up to modern day isn't bad, but there really isn't any reason for it to be called I Am Legend.
**SPOILER**
They gave it a cookie-cutter hollywood ending where the protagonist martyrs himself and miraculously saves the day. The reason the book was so poignant in the first place was the way it ended. The movie has no meaning now.
As a movie goes, yes, it was well done, but one should at least pay homage to the source material. I'm sick of happy endings. My favorite movie of recent note? Mr. Brooks.
Maybe I'm just skewed like that.

I've read the book and seen the first movie, in black and white and it sticks to the story. Much more than I am Legend the movie does, but the old movie is called The Last Man on Earth is Not Alone. The advertising slogan for this movie. But yeah movies based on books = trash, usually

There are actually a couple of movies based on/around I Am Legend. I think there was an indie or B rated film that came out about the same time as the new I Am Legend movie called "I Am Omega." Plus, ones before that, Omega Man, etc.
As far as Cinema for cinema's sake goes, yes, it was good...would have loved to see it in Imax.
Anyway...at least they didn't hire Uwe Boll to direct it. How that man manages to keep getting hired for movies I'll never know.

I thought it was an overall good movie. I was captivated all the way until the the chick and kid reach the village. I was so pissed! I couldn't believe that was how they were gonna end the movie. I wanted so much more. could've at least shown a 10 yrs later clip or something!

The alternate ending was, in my opinion worse than the original. Not everything works out like that, but hollywood likes to make it seem like they do. The decent thing to do was to martyr Smith.

I liked teh alternate ending because it actually brought some sense to the 'getting smarter' plot line. The whole 'OMG BUTTERFLY IN BROKEN WINDOW!!111!' thing was stupid.

I honestly think the movie was awesome. I read the book and everything, and personally, I like the idea of mindless zombies instead of smart vampires. The ending was cool, I think.

There was a purpose behind the "butterfly thing". It was probably the last bit of humanity left in Smith's character, and the original cut implemented it 100 times better then the alternate ending, in my opinion. And for better or worse, Hollywood and the average movie-goer just doesn't take kindly to totally hopeless finishes.
Regardless of all that, it stuck to the short-story as well as it really could while still holding enough integrity AND making money for week upon week. An easy 8.5/10 by today's standards as a movie is concerned.
***SPOILER***
And I agree. The zombie/vampires suddenly becoming docile, purposeful and their "leader" willing them to calm down, etc. was absurd. The alternate ending was a joke. Leave all those freaks behind and ignore the cure my ***. :\

I honestly did not like the movie. It wasn't horrible, but maybe I'd need to rewatch it before I make a true opinion on the movie.

I was never able to enjoy it in the theater due to my friend's OLDER brother who jumped every five seconds, it was pathetic. Once I watched it at home (I own it now) I enjoyed it. I didn't really care if it matched up with the book, most books that are made into movies are completly off and horrible as is. Example being I, Robot, that book was 100% different than the film, but I still enjoyed the film.
