Three weeks ago, Supreme Chancellor Drake Vilmar met with Alderaan's Viceroy Dallmar for the purpose of discussing the specific terms of the Alderaan-Republic Military Alliance Treaty. While En-route to Duros to speak with their leader, the shared transport was attacked and destroyed by an unknown assassin. The sith are suspected, but no one knows for sure who is to blame.
In response, the Galactic Senate has been recalled back into session, mere days after the representatives were sent back to their home worlds to begin wartime preparations.
They have been called back into session for three main reasons.
I. To elect a new Supreme Chancellor II. To Investigate the attack and prepare measures to prevent further instances. III. To repair the political situation on Alderaan.
(All Senators to the Senate halls, please!)

Sevrina Terek huffed. She was tired, she had a headache, and she was more than just a little annoyed. The Naboo were sitting on a tenuous peace with the Gungans, King Demila was being shrewd while managing to miss the big picture and too stubborn to take advice, the galaxy was on the brink of full-scale war just waiting for the next planetary invasion, the Republic was being portrayed as the bad guys, and now...now Supreme Chancellor Vilmar had been assassinated. The Naboo Senator had little doubt in her mind who was to blame for the deed, though she also doubted that it would ever be proven. And to top it all off, not only had she already spent five of her seven hours planetside arguing with politicians, she had spent another hour in conference with her aide catching up on the happenings of the Senate and the Republic, she had spent the last hour arguing with the Senate Guard about her personal guardsmen's armament. She had forgone her own without argument, but she was also very adamant about not having her guards disarmed. She did feel somewhat sorry for the senatorial guardsman in question; after all, he had only been doing his job, but the fact that he had won the debate, as evidenced by the two unarmed and very annoyed Naboo plus one armored and almost pissed-off Coruscanti private security guard stalking through the halls of the Inter-Galactic Senate building towards the main chamber, limited just how much pity she was willing to feel.
The call for a Grand Assembly hadn't been far behind the news of Vilmar's demise, and Terek had a pretty good idea of what would be discussed. She had a few ideas on the outcome as well, though that could go a number of ways, depending on how things went during the senatorial session. She had a feeling it would be an interesting Assembly. She hoped nobody got some fool idea in their head and tried to elect her. That would be just what she needed.
Senator Terek's aide, Olen, rose from his seat inside the Naboo platform within the main Senate chamber as the Senator, her nephew, Ric, and a particularly grizzled man in his mid thirties wearing a medium suit of matrix armor. The Coruscanti, Parias, nodded his scarred head at Sevrina, turned and stood in the center of the hall leading to the platform, and folded his hands behind his back with a click. Ric took up a stance at the back of the platform, while Sevrina and Olen sat and began discussing current events as they waited for the General Assembly to be called to order.

As the senators and representatives took to their seats, and the Grand Assembly was called to order by the Coruscanti Senator (As per the Constitution), Senator Kaio Duranara managed to slip in just before the chambers were locked.
In the last few weeks, Duranara had failed to keep a war from happening, and only barely managed to postpone a war on Naboo. For the renowned ambassador, this was proving to be a bad trend.
It was curious that Duranara should have been late for the Assembly, considering that he was one of the few senators who did not actually leave Coruscant following the declaration of war. Over the last few days, the Bothan had been contacting old friends and political allies in an attempt to create some sort of anti-war faction, but to no avail at this point.
As he sat in his chair, one that was always somehow more uncomfortable than it should have been, the Coruscanti Senator began the proceedings.
"Order. As Standing Chancellor, I call this Assembly to action. The first point on the agenda is-"
Suddenly, a group of six hoverpods, slightly larger than the rest, broke loose and sailed forward into the empty space usually reserved for caucos. These were the representatives from a group of Core Worlds known for their Radical Core Faction ideals.
The first, an aging human from Kuat, spoke.
"For the sake of this governing body and for the current galactic conflict, we move to expedite the electoral process, immediately."
Applause from the lower Core Faction section revealed their support.
"The Core Faction nominates Senator Hale of Corellia."
Almost instantly afterwards, a group of pods from the uper stands of the chamber broke loose. The Rim Faction Radicals.
A Twi-lek spoke out from the top of the room.
"The Rim Faction Nominates Senator Bolumbo from Ord Mantell."
As soon as the first two niminations were cast, a total of thirty-seven others followed. Once the coruscanti had regained order, the assembly was called upon to vote.
Duranara's was the first ballot cast.
(Sorry for speeding that up, but that's what's going on. And yes, Myn, that's you. But hey, it was an NPC, so you don't have to do it if you dan't want to.)

Citrine sat in her hover pod leaning her head in her hands. She had heard about the death of the Chancellor, but where she stood in the senate, and the voting process was all overwhelmed for her. She had very little experience with the senate thus far and the complications with the Sith conflict and the reform after the first war on her own planet distracted her from making a confident decision. She disliked the Sith, and her bias told her that they were the cause of the assassination, but to let her personal feelings get in the way was unjust and illogical.
Citrine watched as the names were stated, as hover pods flew around proposing their nominations for their factions. She barely knew any of the other senators and had a hard time casting her ballot. I've barely been home since the war. She thought to herself even though Dantooine shouldn't be too much of a concern at this point compared to the current wars. Her aide and herself had already left port when the assembly had been called, it was as if the universe was toying with her, as she thought. Senator Hale... She thought as the nomination had been mentioned first. Citri didn't know much about him, but she had heard he was a good leader. After over analyzing as many of the nominated senators as she could without looking foolish for taking her time, Citri voted for a senator Ghilgi of Bespin, having had conferences with the man personally before. Her decisions didn't have a very good basis or reason, in fact her current way of politics was still premature and childish compared to the older senators. Citri often became scared of her decisions, knowing she had much to learn in the assembly even after her years of schooling.
Once her vote had been cast, she eagerly waited for the decision of Alderaan and the investigation of the assassination. Citri knew there were murmurs of the Sith being blamed, but did the senate really have a choice? As far as she knew, they had no evidence, unless there was any information she could gather when the discussion arose. She stood up and moved to the front of her platform leaving her aide still sitting. She loathed that the Republic wasn't looking very good at the time. Citri thought about the battle of Dantooine, and how bad it made them all look. They couldn't afford another drawback, they needed proof for the assassination, and with those thoughts, Citrine remained neutral, refusing to point fingers at anyone until they had reason to.

(sweet!)
Aiden Baoont stood firm at his pod, doing his best to look even and strong as he was nominated by a fellow senator. Although he was one of the newest senators, he was one of the most politically savvy and uncorrupted. Apparently his speech at the onset of the war had had an effect.
Although he knew the chances of winning were slim, he could not keep himself from hoping. There was so much he could do if he were elected... so much good... He could start righting the many wrongs done by the mega-conglomerates and these warring factions in the Senate. He could get the Republic prepared for the new Sith and Mandalorian war. He knew he could, he just needed the means.
He supposed the title of Supreme Chancellor was the best means he could come by.
Standing strong, he waited while the votes were beamed in. He had already voted moments ago. He had also given a small speech, voicing his beliefs and goals for the Republic. All he could do was hope that the rest of the Senate listened.
But for now, there was nothing to do but wait.

Senator Nathan Hale's face was completely impassive, seated in his chair, his hands were folded in a tent over his nose. He looked over at his advisor, who was wisely turned away towards the wall. The man's excitement was easily apparent.
Too soon. Nathan's eyes narrowed as he looked down at the ground for a moment.
Corellia needed him, the Corellian Defense Corps was just starting to take form. If he was to leave, funding would most likely leave with his senatorial position. Among other things.
He turned slightly and saw his wife standing at the doorway, her shadow was reaching out, almost touching his seat. Leaning forward he stood up, moving to the amplifier, he cleared his voice.
"Fellow delegates, while it's an honor to be chosen, my place is still with my people. The only reason for me to take this position would be for personal gains. This would do nothing for the people of my planet."
Nathan heard a strangled gasp from his advisor.
So hang him.
He looked back down at the votes, his name appearing at the top. Looking at the Senator third down, he turned and looked at Senator Aiden Baoont. Nodding at the man, he clasped his hands behind his back.
"I put my support and votes behind Senator Aiden Baoont, he is strong willed and just as active in the Senate as I. His experience will allow him to make the same decisions I would."
Hale grimaced inwardly. He had a feeling the President would be making a house call. The razing he'd receive would be nothing compared to the press coverage. Still, it was worth it.

That was all that was needed. Following his requittal of candidacy, all Core Faction votes which would have gone to Senator Hale were, in the ensuing riot, re-cast for Senator Baoont. The voting continued for another hour or so, but in the end, there was simply no clear second candidate for the Rim Faction, and so that vote was split thirteen ways, leaving the final tally in excruciating favor of Senator Aiden Baoont.
(If you'd like to RP out the acceptance of the office and then dismiss the assembly or continue or whatever, be my guest, Chancellor)

(Ignoring Ashla's post...) Aiden Baoont couldn't help but let a slight smile betray his feelings as the winner of the election was announced. He was the new Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic, something almost unheard of in a man as young as he. He couldn't quite believe it. Slowly, he guided his pod forward, docking with the podium and stepping to the Coruscanti Senator. Respectfully shaking the man's hand, Aiden took the stage. "Thank you, fellow senators, for electing me to such a high and prestigious office. I promise you that I will devote myself to the work of leading the Republic through these dark times." It wasn't much, but Baoont was still too surprised to articulate something great. He waited a moment, getting his bearing, then continued. "What happened a few weeks ago was a tragedy, clearly Sith treachery at its finest. We must double our defenses. I propose that all federal officials and planetary representatives be given double guard, republic intelligence officers, and special forces advisers in order to ensure their safety. If the Sith could assassinate Vilmar, they could kill any one of us. They are attempting to weaken the Republic, in order to all the more easily destroy it. But we will be strong! We will not let their treachery bring our nation down!" He waited for the applause, then continued. "If we could quickly pass this bill, I would like to move on to the next order of business." (Might as well make this session useful. )

(um.. Duranara is the Bothan Senator, and the one leading this was the Coruscanti senator.. just a random NPC I threw in there. It's cool, I modified your post... Now... if we can just make this work out to our RPing advantage...)
The older senators of the Core Faction could not believe it. They had been secretly throwing political support to Hale for years, hoping that one day the Corellian could be used for their purposes. Once he had the election in the palm of his hand, he threw it to Baoont, the Ord Mantell senator, the wild card. With Hale, at least they had support of the party, but Ord Mantell wasn't in either the Core or the Rim faction.
The Kuat representative again hovered forward.
"In light of the severity and importance of this bill, we request a caucous session and a brief recess for review and discussion of your draft."
(I just want to talk to other senators)

Aiden nodded his head. He had no choice but to accept. This was a democracy, after all. Although he didn't quite like the sound of it. These recesses usually meant more treacherous plans and corrupt bargains, and plotting for each senator's advantage. There often was little talk about the bill in question.
"Request granted. The session will begin again in half an hour." He said reluctantly, and stepped back towards his pod to begin speaking with the various senators already moving around him.

Citrine could see a slight gestured uproar within the core faction. Surely, they had discussed Hale's election prior to the session, probably on many accounts. Citrine was pretty satisfied with the election, although she was unsure of how the new Chancellor with react. After hearing his speech and the proposal of the bill, Citrine nodded her head in agreement and satisfaction. She hadn't heard the senator prior to this moment, but he gave a good first impression to her, and surely to others. Citrine smiled slightly at the bill, letting her self-centered attitudes show. Especially because of the Sith occupation on Dantooine, Citrine wanted as much protection as she could get. She was probably one of the more paranoid senators, feeling as if she were always in danger, even when no threat were to reveal themselves to her.
When the request had been granted, she left the assembly immediately in hopes to meet some of the others senators for advice and discussion. Although her opinion most likely wouldn't be swayed, she wanted to understand what some of the other senators thought of the bill, and what direction the meeting would be in.

Aiden strode down the halls surrounding the assembly area, stopping at nearly every step to accept the congratulations of some dignitary or other, smiling and offering thanks in response. Already he could see those of the Core and Rim factions plotting, standing in little groups here and there. More than once a Core faction delegate had approached Aiden, hinting at "good relations" between the faction and the Chancellery. It didn't take much to realize that the Core Faction was expecting benefits for his promotion, and that they probably sought to control him in the long run.
Aiden almost snorted at the thought. He wasn't that inexperienced. But he would entertain the Core worlders for now. They now represented his base, and he could use their power to further his benevolent ends.
Hopefully the means to get to those ends wouldn't be too scandalous.
He came upon an attractive-looking woman, recognizing her as the Senator from the now occupied Dantooine. The conquest of her homeworld had won her some popularity and quite a bit a sympathy, at least in the circles he was a part of, and it seemed that most left her out of their wheelings and dealings. In fact, she reminded Aiden much of himself. She too was young and inexperienced, and didn't seem overly confident in her actions. She also seemed clean of the corruption that pervaded the auras of the more experienced senators.
Stepping towards her, he offered up a smile. "Hello, Senator Febrenaux. I do not believe we have yet met. I am Aiden Baoont, of Dantooine. A pleasure." He said, lifting his hand to shake hers. Maybe this would be a chance to make an ally that he could actually trust.

"The recess is now officially at an end." Aiden stood at the podium, gazing at the thousands of pods arrayed around him. Despite its many annoyances, the recess had been very informational for the new Supreme Chancellor. He had seen the depths of the greed and corruption of the Senate; its endless power grabbing and self-serving means. He had also seen how smug and full of themselves the Senators were, and how they had looked down on him, viewed him as nothing more than a puppet.
Well, now he would show them who was really running the show.
He nearly allowed himself a smirk. They were all restless and impatient, ready to vote for his proposed bill and get the hell out of the Senate chambers. They had expensive dinners and other functions to get to, things to do, and this was taking far too long.
Well then, they best be ready to cancel.
Aiden continued on in a booming tone. "Before we take the final vote, I have an announcement. As you all know, the Sith Empire has acted with unprecedented aggression, taking Subterrel and then Dantooine under a false banner of "self-defense." The last Supreme Chancellor is dead, likely because of foul play. The Mandalorians have rebelled, killing Republic citizens and occupying our base on Mandalore. There are now reports of Mandalorian vessels of Concord Dawn, and we have lost all communication with the world." Aiden let this bombshell drop, something he had just been informed of only moments ago. "It is assumed that they have attacked the world as well. There is no more denying it, the Republic is at war."
He took a deep breath, readying to exert his power. "As Supreme Chancellor, considering all of the aforementioned facts, I am declaring that the Republic is in an official state of emergency. Exercising the powers invested in me by our constitution I am opening an emergency session of the Senate starting now, and going on until I believe that we have created all the necessary legislation to deal with the problems facing the Republic. All exits will be sealed and locked, and no one will leave until I have declared the session ended. The time for pussyfooting and underhanded, self-serving politics is at an end. We are the Senate, the pillars of the Republic. It is we who are entrusted with the preservation of a free society, we who must deal with the ordeals that threaten all living beings. The time has come to act like the people we are."
He looked around, taking in the muted shock that permeated the chambers. A smile began to spread itself across his face.
"Well, let's get started then, shall we?"

Senator Duranara suddenly found himself torn between what might be the most important evening of galactic politics in years, and the dinner date he had planned. Both were increasingly important, and neither could be missed. Though, obviously, the dinner date would have to be missed, because he could not legally leave this building until the state of emergency was ended. His Tabaca Fish would have to wait for another day. Now, finally, was the time for action. Everybody in the senate knew this day would come, but only a few, Kaio included, had found it prudent to prepare...
And, with that, the Bothawui Senatorial Pod hovered forward, for the first time in over a year, and its occupant spoke with conviction defying of his character.
"Supreme Chancellor, fellow Senators. In light of the recent state of emergency, I find it necessary to remind you all of Article 17, section 12, subsection 6B, of the Rights of the Independant Act. It states, in no uncertain terms, that independant nations such as the Mandalorian Clans and even the Sith Empire are not subject to our laws, and so they do NOT fall under the authority of this Senate or of the Defense Ministry associated with it. The Responsibility to manage this war and to find a diplomatic resolution to it falls not to the Army, whose duties as an 'organization for the common defense of territories only', but to the IntraNational Relations and the Interspecies Advisory Boards. I speak to you today because I am the active chair of both of these committees, and I wish to see a peacful conclusion to the Mandalorian crisis, one which we created in this very chamber. I hereby request as a primary action, before and defensive measures are enacted, that a series of Emergency Action Commitees be formed, as per our consitution. Firstly, one to reintegrate the Mandalorian clans into the Republic. If we do not keep them now, we will surely lose them forever. Secondly, a commitee to counteract the actions of the Sith within our own territories, and even within our own Senate. Thirdly, a commitee to stabilize and strengthen the conflicted territories between here and the Outer Rim."
He paused as Core Faction and Rim Faction alike muttered amongst themselves. They had not been expecting this.
"It is not much to ask for, Chancellor. Providing for our own Citizens, Regulating our own government, and Protecting our own worlds. It is why we are gathered here, my friends. It is in the first line of our consitution, for Honor's Sake."
He looked to the new Chancellor. He was so young. He did not deserve the burden he had been given...
"If we can not do this for our Republic, we do not deserve any of it."
(Cha-cha!)

Aiden nodded. As an Onderonian, he had no love for the Mandalorian people. In fact, he detested them. But they were beings entitled to all the rights and freedoms he had, and they had been treated wrong. Law won over prejudice in Aiden's heart, at least for the moment.
"I agree with Senator Duranara concerning the Mandalorians. It is the Republic, with an illegal treaty created fifty years ago, that brought the Mandalorians to act so desperately. Thusly, I recommend that Duranara head the creation of the first and third committees, and lead the effort to reintegrate the Mandalorians into Republic society. There is no need for hostility with the Mandalorians, and a peaceful resolution is required."
He would give Duranara the reins on that one. He was a good person, from what Aiden has seen of him, and very devoted to his work. He deserved a spot at the head of it all.
But, he did have some differences with the man.
"However, the sited part of the Constitution no longer applies to the Sith Empire. They have acted aggressively, taking violent military action against of. They have attacked and seized two of our worlds. They have chosen war, my fellow Senators, not us. And we cannot respond peacefully to an enemy bent on violence and the destruction of our world. We must act accordingly. I propose that industrial and agricultural output, especially starship and weapon construction, be brought up to epic levels. We must enact legislation to foster production, employment, and expansion of all military branches. We must begin fortifying worlds on the rim as well as along the expected Sith invasion corridor. We must also enact deflationary bills in order to guard against any wartime economic backlash and ensure the strength and stability of our nation. It is time to face the facts: we are at war."
He stood tall, awaiting the response of his peers.
