Planet Name: Dynn
Planet Type: Terrestrial
Habitable: Yes
System: Dynndas (Colonies, 'between' Ruusan and Sriluur)
Terrain Overview:
Oribiting a 'cold' star, 50% of Dynn is icy tundra and snow-capped mountains, divided between the north and south hemisphered, each comprising 25% od Dynn's landmass. The other 50% is a boreal forest of deciduous trees, which forms a wide 'belt' around the equator. It is on this belt that most civilization is located, though there are a few communities of species with an affinity for colder climes farther north, and a few ski resorts exist near colder parts of the 'fingers of rock.' The forest belt is also where all of Dynn's 'ocean ponds', large landlocked bodies of water, are located.
Notable Geographic Features:
Wide Woods[/u]
The Wide Woods is the Nordikann name for the wide ring of boreal forest that runs around Dynn. The trees are all towering deciduous trees, named 'Yellowpine' for the color of their wood and their needles. The trees grow very fast, growing a meter a year and reaching an average height of 13 or 13 meters. As per their name, the wood of the Yellowpines is yellow-ish, and very solid as well.
The deeper parts of the Wide Woods is littered with relics of Nordikann civilization. Crashed atmospheric craft, derailed transports from the era when steam-powered rail transportation was prevalent, the remains of bases from the civil war, and many other things. The Nordikann leave them alone, however, considering this detritus to be 'an outdoor museum, limited time offer'.
Ocean ponds
The 'ocean ponds', as they are called by the Nordkianns, are the largest bodies of water on Dynn. They are essentialy oceans surrounded on all sides by land, the polar inverse of islands. They are all 'fresh' water, and many varied species of aquatic life inhabit them.
Fingers of rock
While Dynn's mountain ranges are primarily located around the poles, the 'fingers of rock', as they are named, are long stretches of mountains that reach down from the poles into warmer parts of the planet, though none are anywhere near pole to pole. All of the fingers are rich in valuable ores, and many mining shafts, both ancient and modern, worm their way through each finger.
The Tabletop Mountain[/u]
One of the few mountains to exist in the warmer part of the planet that isn't a finger of rock, the Tabletop Mountain is a fertile plateau located in the transitional area between the warm forests and the cold tundra. It was only after the Nordikann developed atmospheric VTOL freighters the the Tabletop Mountain was explored and deemed habitable, and the wreckage of early atmospheric craft can still be found in the few patches of forest that dot the landscape atop it.
Newt Cave[/u]
A large, long natural cave in the side of the Tabletop Mountain, the Newt Cave is home to the Red-Eyed Newt, a large species amphibian. The cave is also home to a wide variety of spores, molds, and fungus, the latter of which are mostly edible. The caps of the Cairn Bolete, in particular, are a power headache remedy, and taste like aged brandy to boot.
Capital City:
Cheka (Population: 700 million)
Cheka is the capital city of Dynn, and by far the largest, with a population of around seven hundred million, give or take a few thousand. This is the center of government for the Nordikann, as well as the location of the second largest spaceport on the planet. Cheka is located on an artificial island in the middle of a large lake, though it is by far nowhere near the size of any of the ocean ponds.
Major cities:
Slaven (Poulation: 108 million)
One of the oldest major cities on Dynn, Slaven is the main commercial center and 'tourist trap' of the planet. Sprawling shopping complexes, amusement parks, and various other moneysuckers abound. Slavenn also contains the largest museum of Nordikann culture and history, and is home to the planet's largest spaceport. The major attraction to Slaven, other than the shopping centers and amusement parks is the submarine bay, which houses submarine versions of luxury starships, and offers a look at the deep sea life of Dynn, including the slowly repleneshing stock of the Tobin, large fish that sustained the Nordikann eceonomy singlehandedly for milennia.
Chesava (Population: 230 million)
Chesava is the industrial center of Dynn, and at one point in the planet's history, was very heavily polluted, before advances in technology drastically cut back on that problem. Many major Republic corporations have at least one factory in Chesava, and it also home to the largest sawmill on the planet.
Sentient species:
Nordikann
A race of sentient anthropomorphic canines, the Nordikanns are the primary sentient species of Dynn. They evolved from large predatory canines that roamed the planet eons ago.
Non-Sentient species of note:
Water Gels
Native to every body of water on Dynn, the Water Gels are non-sentient transculcent jellyfish that come in a variety of bright colors. Non-venomous, and feeding off of microscopic organisms in the water, Water Gels are safe to keep as pets, and indeed, the Water Gel pet 'industry' is a comparatively large one.
Leafhoppers
Spherical, quadrupedal amphibians, Leafhoppers inhabit the odd, scattered swamps, marshes, and bogs that dot the Wide Woods. They are very brightly colored, and run the whole gamut of colors from cyan to purple to bright green. Leafhopper skin was, and still is, very highly valued for decorative leather, and finds its way into many products, such as clothing, wall hangings, and seats for all manner of craft.
Turok
About the size of a real world giant tortoise, the Turok are non-sentient terrapins native to the smaller ponds and lakes spread through the Wide Woods. Their shells are very tough, able to take three blows from a 8kg sledgehammer before breaking. In olden days, Nordikanns fashioned these shells into armor, combining them with the smaller, less tough carapaces of the Shell Rats into full plate mail armor. In modern times, Turok shells are mostly used for decorative wall pieces.
Red-Eyed Newt[/u]
About the size of a small dog, Red-Eyed Newts are large cave-dwelling amphibians found only in the Newt Cave, a long, large natural cave 'built' into the side of the Tabletop Mountain. As their name suggests, they have large, bright red eyes, which are also compound eyes. The rest of their body is a dull, muted grey, covered in a thick slime. This slime has a numbing, cooling effect when applied to skin, and as such, early Nordikanns used this slime as a burn remedy, or as an anesthetic.
Abkani
The Abkani are large (About half size of a Dewback) breed of non-sentient lagomorphs, whose ancestors were hunted by the non-sentient ancestors of the Nordikanns. Once the Nordikanns evolved into sentience and gained the ability to store and keep food from spoiling, there was less strain on the Abkani to be small and fast, which resulted in their growth.
Tobin[/u]
An extremely large carnivorous species of fish native to the deeper parts of the ocean ponds, the Tobin, along with other smaller species of fish) became a vital part of Nordikann culture once they developed the technology for deep sea fishing. The Nordikanns discovered they had a deep affinity for fish meat, and for a few milennia, the Tobin became more important to the Nordikanns than the Abkani. Within the last few centuries, however, a moratorium of fishing for Tobin has been exnacted out of fear that thousands of years of fishing has made the Tobin endangered. The plight of the Tobin has recently become galactic news, and various charities have been set up across the Republic to aid their protection and restoration.
Shell Rats
Large (Roughly the size of a real-world hound) armadillo-like creatures, Shell Rats survive off of small berries and insects, and are a common sight in the deeper parts of Dynn's forests. Their carapace is relatively strong, tests show it being able to withstand light blaster pistol shots, and early in civilization, Nordikanns used these carapaces as armor, combining them and Turok shells into crude platemail. Some modern Nordikanns still wear Shell Rat carapace armor as protective undershirts or as decorative shoulderpads.
Deathheads
Definitely one of the odder species of Dynn, Deathheads are medium-sized (About the size of a real world parrot) brightly colored songbirds whose heads are covered in a bone growth that makes them resemble a bare skull. Early in Nordikann culture, Deathheads were feared, and their singing was said to mean a Nordikann was about to die, but as they grew more intelligent, and thus more curious, the explanation of bone growth was discovered. Deathheads are tame, can be hand-fed on nuts and berries, and are a somewhat popular export as pets, though not as popular as the Water Gels.
History:
Dynn was discovered around the same time as most of the other planets in the Colonies region. By the time the Republic had officially established contact and Basic was fully adopted planetwide, the Nordikanns had just developed hyperdrive equivalents capable of being installed in light freighter-sized ships, and were tentatively exploring beyond their solar system.
As it had when the Nordikanns were 'alone', the expansive forest of deciduous trees and easily obtainable ores in the 'fingers of rock' quickly become major exports for the planet. Soon, many galactic companies had their 'fingers in the pie', something that continues to this day.
A major civil war erupted on Dynn shortly after the implementation of the moratorium of Tobin fishing in 3800 BBY. The Tobin had been a major part of Nordikann culture for milennia, and many were unwilling to give up fishing, believing that they were in endless supply. It took the intervention of a large Republic force, as well as a few Jedi, to quell this war, and make the fishermen see reason in laying off fishing until the Tobin could replenish their numbers. After the war, many of the fisherman left Dynn to seek their fishy fortune on other worlds, primarily Wroona and Pantolomin.
In the past few decades, there has been a great rise in interest in Nordikann music, a simple affair that consists of comparatively few unique melodies, but many different interpretations and variations of each particular melody. Nordikann music has become trendy for rich people, and having a collection of Nordikann music supposedly is a sign that you are 'down to ground' and not a selfish snob.
