Planet Name:Dara IV
Planet Type:Terrestrial
Habitable:Yes
System: Daravin System
Terrain Overview:
Dara IV is known for an extreme range of diversity in terrain and geography, divided into numerous regions on each of the four continents.
The bulk of the inland regions are volcanic. Quit often ash is falling from the skies like snow and accumulates on the ground in the desolate interior. Those who live in the ash-strewn and rocky lands are nomads well-adapted to existence there.
The majority of the populations live on the coasts. Generally speaking, the coasts are rainy and muddy the majority of the year, growing gradually more rocky and desolate the further north and south one goes. In the equatorial regions they are almost swampland, with numerous bogs and marshes interspersed with grasslands and forests.
Due to the high volcanic activity on the planet, hot springs and geothermal energy are extremely prevalent.
Notable Geographic Features:
Mount Andalaya- The highest point on Dara IV, Mount Andalaya is an active volcano on the southern continent reaching 8,000 meters above sea level.
Sea of Zafara- The Sea of Zafara, or alternatively the Western Sea, is a large body of water with two distinct traits: clarity and shallowness. It is at the deepest 32 meters, and one can see that full length down to coral formations.
Sadro- Sadro is an island in the eastern sea composed of numerous dormant volcanoes. It is a lush and tropical paradise adorned with numerous homes for the elite. It is a prime vacation destination.
Capital City:
Saint’s Grace- The seat of all government on the planet, and the head of the religion. It is home to the Great Council Hall and the High Cathedral. Both are renowned for their classic and imposing architecture.
Major cities:
Rasia- The traditional home of House Rasia, it is on the southern continent. Traditional architecture and customs are prevalent here, and the city itself has no less than four cathedrals for the worship of both the Old Gods and the new gods. The architecture is traditionally based off of mud and bricks, and while sprawling the city lacks vertical space.
Gilora- The home of House Gilora is on the northern continent. Of all the cities, this is the most modern. There are new buildings here constructed in the offworld style, though traditional spires are still common on the skyline. The architecture here is mostly based off of stone.
Osra- The Western continent is home to House Osra. Osra buildings are traditionally constructed, and despite the fire danger are made primarily from wood and paper.
Sentient species: Daravin
Non-Sentient species of note:
Ash crabs- Ash crabs are large land-dwelling crustaceans that thrive by burying themselves in ashes and near lava flows. Their hard shells protect them from extreme heat, and they are prized as a source of materials and food by the nomadic residents of the ash lands.
Rolo- The rolo is a large two legged creature reminiscent of a reptile, but with mammalian tendencies. They give milk which is commonly consumed and can be used to collect leather-like skins.
Bakar- The bakar is a small avian creature often kept in households as both a pet and a source of nutritious eggs.
Mountain dragon- The mountain dragon is a large winged reptilian creature found in the ash lands and the coastal mountain ranges. It is grey-scaled, and while it doesn’t exhale fire, it does have razor sharp fangs and talons, as well as a tail it uses as a whip. They are one of the top predators on the planet.
Fangfish- The fangfish is a common pest found in the waters, both fresh and salt, with sharp teeth and an aggressive disposition that perpetually plagues swimmers and snorkelers. However, they are also fished and eaten for food.
Ash owl- The ash owl is a nocturnal avian predator found in the ash lands, with grey feathers and a strong beak. They tend to be solitary, and are revered by nomadic tribes as symbols of wisdom and the supernatural. image
History: In the accretion disk surrounding the Daravin system’s star, gradually dust and rock coagulated into planetary embryos, which in turn merged into multiple terrestrial planets over 300 million years. The fourth of these from the star was the only one on which sentient life was to evolve, nourished by a vibrant volcanic soil.
After the Daravin evolved on the planet, development of the natural resources on Dara IV escalated, though by and large the environment remained intact. Fossil fuels were never used with the prevalence of geothermal energy, and most of the population on the planet remained rural, despite the advent of a new existence in space.
