Aerith Vand applauded softly from her box in the Capital Opera House on Criaxa, flanked by empty seats. Behind her was the silent figure of her bodyguard droid, a lumbering, huge monstrosity whose single red eye was sliding back and forth, scanning the room for any threats to the aristocrat. Next to it was Tia, her personal assistant droid. Due to the late hour that marked the ending of the Tragedy of Vitaeria Donuli, incidentally her favorite opera, it was only courteous to have the staff dismissed. Lady Vand could get by with just her droids, and in fact it was quite enjoyable to be free of the need for niceties that came up when dealing with human beings. Or aliens.
On stage, the cast was bowing low to tremendous applause and bouquets of flowers, but Aerith rose early, smoothing her quintessential blue and gold dress, and headed out to the lift, beating the crowd out through the doors, her droids in her wake.
“My Lady, did you enjoy the performance?” Tia asked in her soft, ever so slightly mechanical voice. It was extremely nuanced for a droid, and reflected the top notch artificial intelligence behind the voice. Over the years Tia had been imprinted on by Aerith, and as a result the two got along rather well.
”Yes, it was quite enjoyable.”
“I thought the lead soprano was excellent my Lady.”
Aerith nodded as she moved through the doors and into the street. It was a valid point, but she was a bit more reserved, playing her cards close to her chest. She didn’t have anything negative to say particularly, and she had to admit she was starting to feel tired. It had been a six hour performance, and it was now technically early morning.
But somehow she didn’t feel like going to bed so soon.
”Go bring the speeder around, and then take us to the park. It’s a beautiful summer night, it would be a shame to waste it.”
The guard droid remained silent, the soft sound of his eye moving back and forth cutting through the night air, along with the sound of cheering from inside the building.
Tia departed, and soon came back with a luxurious, convertible landspeeder, and Aerith climbed in the back seat, her guard taking one of the front ones. Then they set off through the deserted streets. There was no conversation as they went along. Aerith, as she often was, was in the middle of thought. In one part of her mind she was reflecting on the evening’s performance, and in another she was focusing on her current dilemmas. Business demanded constant attention, and despite appearances she wasn’t some empty-headed young socialite. She was a sophisticated noble and businesswoman.
Inside a few minutes they were all in the park, and Aerith was resting alongside a fountain. She had every intention of staying there for a while, then going home and sleeping through most of the day.
