Planet Name: Masgam
Planet Type: Small terrestrial
Habitable: Yes
System: Masgam, Deep Core. Closest planet is Vulpter.
Terrain Overview: Masgam is covered in a cold, coniferous forest. There are also several, high, dangerous mountain ranges. The western hemisphere of the planet is mostly mid-to-high tech city. Non-Human life on the planet is rare, due to the inhospitable terrain, but some life has survived, including rodents and small populations of insects. The oceans are freezing temperatures, but small fish exist.
Notable Geographic Features: The Forbidden Mountains, a mountain range the government has closed off for "security reasons". (Actually, there was a Jedi sanctuary in the mountains, and when Masgam seceded, they tried to get rid of the Jedi by closing them off from the outside world.)
Capital City: Masgam City
Major cities: Sectors 1-12
Sentient species: Human
Non-Sentient species of note: Masgam Wasp (super-killer wasp)
History: Masgam was discovered about 600 years ago, and colonized. It was used mostly as a resort planet for those who wanted a nice, peaceful vacation. The Jedi even built a sanctuary in the mountains, meant for meditation and study of philosophy. The planet was mostly peaceful until 3901 BBY, when an unexpected asteroid hit the planet and threw it into turmoil. The planetary government declared martial law and became a dictatorship.
Life on the planet recovered after about 300 years, but the dictator family never gave up power. So, about 78 years ago, the people of the planet revolted. The revolt was put down quickly and bloodily. After the revolution, the dictator, Emergency Leader Salen, instituted a system where each year one boy and one girl would be chosen from each sector of the planet to come to a several kilometer arena in Masgam City to fight to the death, in order to punish the rebels.
This disgusted the Republic, and Masgam seceded. Although it succeeded in secession, due mostly to the hard terrain of the planet, the Jedi Order asked that Masgam give the trapped Jedi over. The leader refused, and the Order sent a small strike team to rescue the Jedi. The strike team succeeded, but left the leader in power.
In the meantime, the Sith Empire offered to help Masgam keep it's independence. The leader accepted the offer, and now leans toward the Empire, though it remains independent. The Sith Order also saw opportunities, in turning traumatized winners who may have been force-sensitive into Sith. the order would do a midichlorian test on the victors, and if it turned up positve, they would be asked to join the order. Both the Empire and the Order watch the planet closely.
A Sector 13 exists, but it was the sector hit by the asteroid, and to the knowledge of the government, is uninhabited. However, it actually hosts an underground Human population, which believes that the planet was totally annihilated and that they are the only remaining life on the planet. They have been doing surprisingly well, living off grown food and cave water. If it is discovered, the many factions may jump at the chance...
