Notable biological features:
An ancient Golkiiri male
An ancient Golkiiri female
While a Golkiir may have four arms two of them are weak and short, so they are ill suited for combat. This does not mean that the two arms are useless. The two weak arms are located just below the pectoral muscles and can reach out to one foot. Its regular arms are far more proportional. A Golkiir walks on his hind legs, which are digitigrade. They are considerably faster and stronger but generally less intelligent than the average human.
A Golkiir's tail is thick and powerful. Like lesser lizards, if a Golkiir is captured or stuck, its tail will detach allowing it to get away. Six fingers extend out from the creature's hands, and three toes from its feet. A sharp claw extends from each of the creature's fingers and toes, but is generally considered unhygienic if the Golkiir leaves its talons untrimmed. Two rows of razor sharp fangs are concealed within the creature's long snout. A ridge of spines or spikes line the Golkiir's spine from the base of the skull down the the edge of the tail. The arrangement, length, or even if they spines are present at all is heavily subject to genetic variation.
The scales of a male are brilliant to the point of almost being flamboyant while the spines along his back are generally more pronounced. A Golkiiri male's scales will lose their color as he gets older until they almost hold no color at all just before his death. His eyes are generally take on a more colorful hue and his muzzle is less broad than that of a female's. A male is generally larger and has more muscle mass than a female, though the females are usually slightly smarter than the males.
A female's coloring ranges from a dull and flat grey to a boring green, and their eyes are rarely any kind of vibrant color. Her muzzle will be slightly broader and shorter than a male's, and she will be shorter with less muscle mass. Also her voice will be a slightly higher pitch than a male's voice. There are no other differences between male and female Golkiir.
Golkiir are cold blooded and extremely carnivorous. While they can go a small amount of time without eating any food they find it difficult to survive in cold environments. Should they find themselves in a cold or unfavorable environment they have the ability to shut down their metabolism to near death rates until conditions change.
In other words a Golkiir has the ability to hibernate to survive for extended periods of time if need be. While a Golkiir has the ability to slow its metabolism, it also has the power to speed it up as well as needed. Though it is in generally short bursts, like to catch prey or run from danger. The Golkiir also have the ability to survive over a wide range of internal temperatures, though are slowed down in the cold.
The creature's tongue is long and forked, and they can slide it out of their mouth to taste the air for various smells. It is in this manner that they smell, as their noses are not particularly strong.
Number of limbs and Type: 8
One head, one tail (not prehensile), four arms, and two legs.
History:
The Golkiir were far from a peaceful and innocent race before the Aphithiri came to dominate and enslave them. They were plagued with the same conflicts as early man; wars, famine, death, and nationalism. Those who believed that Mahlein was called another name or didn't exist at all were hunted down and eradicated for being a heretic, and their families put on "trial" for the same crime regardless of their guilt or innocence. A handful of nations were hardly as zealous in their beliefs. Some even shed the chains of monarchy and replaced them with democracy.
The Golkiiri nations were ravaged by a global war five years before the original Aphithiri landed on Qesegal, though it is highly unlikely that the Golkiir could have even come close to resisting the ancient Aphithiri even if they were at the height of their power. The entirety of Qesegal submitted to Aphithiri rule less than a year after the initial invasion.
225 years of oppression lead to a few minor outbreaks or rebellion, but none like what had been planned at the end of this era. The slaves were still allowed to write, and had a good life other than having to mine or work in a factory all but ten hours of the day. The rebellion nearly sent the Aphithiri back into space, but they wouldn't give up on their new home so easily. The bulk of the resistance was lured into the southern hemisphere where it a series of strategically placed nuclear missiles eradicated both sides. But mostly the Golkiir rebels.
Seeing the amount of destruction the Aphithiri were willing to dish out to hang on to the world, and that their numbers were again too few to effectively mount a resistance, the Golkiir yet again submitted to Aphithiri rule. This time their life was not nearly as good. Sometimes a Golkiir wasn't allowed sleep at all for days at a time, and even an ounce of slacking off was met with harsh punishment. A few years of harsh treatment passed before their punishment had passed, but their life hadn't come anywhere close to as good as it was prior to the rebellion. They were slaves with no rights at that point, and nothing would change that.
The Aphithiri had also become more militarized, and focused on genetically engineered soldiers so that an uprising could never happen again.
The radiation from the nuclear explosions set off hundreds of years before hadn't gone away, but had instead spread at an alarming rate. The Aphithiri quickly erected barriers in the form of containment fields that would allow them to keep a small portion of their world livable and beautiful.
Unfortunately the Golkiir attempted another rebellion at this particular time. It was ill conceived and executed even worse due to the fact that they had no idea how to write their language, or any language, and therefore couldn't coordinate. They were crushed quickly, efficiently, and brutally by the newly militarized Aphithiri.
Four hundred years later when the Mandalorians began their crusade, they stopped off at Aphithir for a good fight. Many Golkiir died as cannon fodder during this conflict, though it was because of their presence that the Aphithiri could push the Mandalorians back off of Qeshegal. As time went on the Qeshegal were encouraged to reproduce and were surpassing the Aphithir in terms of population. This encouragement was quickly cut down as the population began to double that of the Aphithir.
The current day. The Golkiir population is still double that of the Aphithiri, and hangs in at around two million known and a quarter of that free in either the wastes or the bodies of water within the liveable zone of Qeshegal. Any Golkiir born has a bleak future with no hope of freedom, and nothing but a life of servitude.
Culture:
The Golkiir's culture are dominated by the Lokmuz ("Men from the Sky) that came from space and enslaved them over a millennium ago. Before the Lokmuz came from the sky the Golkiir (Children of the World) were a thriving pre-nuclear people going through their first industrial revolution complete with a democracy and the beginnings of a globalized economy. Despite these tremendous achievements, a nation who's chief weapons of war are muskets and swords don't do well against tanks and blaster rifles.
Now they are a slave race who are born in the metal mines of their respective clan and die in the same mine. If a Golkiir is lucky he or she gets to move up to the factory floor, and they pray that they aren't forced onto the front lines of a meaningless conflict to be cannon fodder. Work is all that they know, and even the slightest hint of any sort of learning not related to work is punished by death.
Because they can't learn to fight, learn to read, or learn anything, they are a deeply religious people. They believe in only one masculine deity. His name is Mahlein, who is everything and everyone, and they almost worship the Jedi who stumble onto Aphithir from time to time. They are Haavut Mahlein, or touched by Mahlein, and they are instruments of His will.
The few Golkiir who are proved to be "Haavut Mahlein" are hidden away from the prying eyes and secretly taught the "Zi", or the spirit, by other Haavut Mahlein so that they may protect their people in the event of another uprising. Zi is not the only form of knowledge that has been passed down through the generations, however. They learn of their history through song and stories, both of which they are allowed so long as they don't speak ill of the Aphithiri or their ways outright.
A few Golkiiri managed to survive the nuclear holocaust that ended their latest rebellion and still exist in the wastes of the planet. Their number is still few though they are growing in number and strength. In a few hundred years they will likely be able to face the Aphithiri again, and this time on their own terms. Their society is largely tribal and nomadic, but still deeply religious and heavily focused on those who are Haavut Mahlein.
They act as Shamans and spiritual leaders while the chief is generally the greatest warrior or strongest provider. Their technology is largely primitive though they have managed to make a few incursions into Aphithiri territory to steal high tech arms. A Falmah, or clan, is expected to be one cohesive unit and work together. It is because of these close family and clan ties, the few Golkiir who manage to make it off world generally end up as Mandalorians.
Aphithiri refer to the Golkiir as Naga or Nagan, and is considered to be an extremely derogatory term.
Names:
A Golkiir name is not unlike their words. They are rarely made up of more than three simple syllables that more often than not is made up of bastardized words in their own language. There is no particular feminine or masculine differentiation between names.
A few examples:
Nahkriizul
Ziiyol
Toorfeinir
Last names follow the same pattern as first names, but they are generally nouns and verbs of families or clans. Before the Lokmuz came from the sky, entire nations held the same surnames.
Language
The Golkiiri language called "Tivaak" is a very gutteral and basic tongue. Each word is made up of no more than three syllables, and its writing (though long forgotten) was a simple series of lines and dots that were etched into stone or onto paper. Conjunctions and both indefinite and definite articles are notably absent from Tivaak, as it mainly focuses on nouns and verbs. A Golkiiri will have no trouble speaking basic due to its mouth structure, but learning it may be an issue due to the radical difference in syntax between the two languages. The language of the Aphithiri is one that every Golkiir must learn else they couldn't communicate with their betters.
