Physiology: The terrans are a race of scientific oddities. The first and most significant one is their triple helix DNA and double chromosome sets. A standard Terran has 98 chromosomes, however, they only require 47 chromosomes to function. The second set is simply a backup to compare RNA to and act as a template for chromosomal self repair. The triple helix's three columns serve different purposes, one is to code for DNA replication, the second is to code for proteins and the third acts as a key. If a gene is misplaced that would compromise the synthesis of the protein, the change is detected by a chemical imbalance in the other two columns and the cell either begins chromosomal repair or begins the process of apoptosis. In this way, genetic problems are few and far between and allows terroare to live much longer then other human-like species. Terroare also have a genetic sequence that activates whenever the body sustains catastrophic damage that allows for extremely accelerated healing, bordering on regeneration, though this is extremely draining and causes near total depletion the body's resources. This was supposed to be used to escape from predators but because the proceedure can now be done in a safe monitored environment, it is used to purge cellular degeneration from the body. Modern science also allows the gene to stay in a semi-active state, allowing soldiers to have an accelerated healing factor, forcing soldiers to eat much larger portions of food rich in fat and carbohydrates to give their bodies the energy to repair damage, from battle or otherwise.
Due to the weird format of their DNA, they are unable to reproduce with other near-human species like other humanoids. However, when mating with a strongly force sensitive, the force somehow reformats the Terroare genetic code into a double helix format. This however, means that while they keep the rapid healing factor and are actually able to develop actual force abilities, they loose the genetic safeguard and self repair. Due to further imperfections, all hybrids only live to around 260 years before Metabolic Cascade Failure begins and 2 years after onset, the subject suffers a very violent and lethal heart attack. Previously, under request from the jedi order, the terran government began a project to study hybrids, however, the project was canceled under ethical concerns.
Surprisingly, pure blooded terroare are almost incompatible with the dark side of the force. Hybrids on the other hand are a different story. Hybrids are capable of utilizing both the light and dark side but both come at a cost to the user that is too much for the user to pay. While the deterioration of morality or superficial decay is not present, using the dark side actually puts extreme stress on body and some higher force powers such as force lightning actually start destroying the body on a cellular level. Normally this is not a problem as the Terroare Healing factor takes care of that but extended usage without rest can cause permanent damage or even death due to the sheer strain. As in most situations in life, if you start coughing blood, find a doctor, immediately.
Unfortunately, it isn't any better with the light side of the force. While the dark side destroys the body, the "light side" destroys the mind. By some genetic anomaly, Terroare are unable to simply let the light side flow, but rather, it requires a lot of subconscious calculations. These calculations unfortunately are done in the part of the brain that processes personality and memory. Usually, extensively using the light side is followed by a period of time in which the individual acts "robotic" for about 12-24 hours before emotion and personality return abruptly, causing severe irritability, headaches, and hyper-activity which can be corrected over a week with medication. However, should the number of calculations exceed what the brain can provide using the memory and personality sectors, there is a small chance that the personality and memory are permanently deleted.
Culture:
They are an interesting culture. Many species that developed on harsh planets usually developed into what could be called "space brutes" but the terroare are not simply space brutes. Terrans as a culture, though they place a heavy emphasis on martial heritage, are actually a very peaceful people and usually dislike excess violence. Since the destruction of Exford, the Terrans had essentially a cultural reset. When you're living hand to mouth on a starship with a species numbering only in the hundred thousands, pride has no place in society, especially when you need to beg, borrow or steal (well, not necessarily steal but there was a lot of unauthorized salvaging) to survive. It also means that everyone needs to pick up at least some of the load to increase the chances of survival.
There are two institutions that linger from their days of wandering. Their martial heritage and the PMCs. During their days of wandering, they were constantly beset upon by bandits, raiders, pirates and assorted warlords that rushed in to fill the power vacuum left by the collapse of the old sith empire after the great hyperspace war. This forced all terrans, man, woman, old, and young to pick up military training since when your entire race numbers only in the hundred thousands, there is no room for civilians and eventually, the most common gift on a Terran’s 30th birthday was a rifle. At age 24, all terrans are registered into a Selective Service roster which means that during times of crisis, they can be called up for military service. All Terroare between the ages of 24 and 240 are required to train at least 1 hour every local day to keep themselves in shape and fit for duty. This applies to men and women equally and nobody other than intellectuals, those in crucial industries, and those employed by the PMCs are are exempt from the draft though the PMCs themselves are often roped into the war effort anyway so it’s not like there is any draft dodging. There’s also a mandatory conscription for about 6 years after high school.
The sith exterminatus of Exford firmly pushed the Terroare into the war on the side of the republic but since they were not republic citizens yet didn’t even have a recognized government left, they needed to find a way to legally organize a military. To that end, Terrans created Private Military Corporations in order to defend their wandering civilian populations and fight the sith. Even after the war’s end and the terroare people have found a new home, the PMCs still exist as nations in all but name, printing their own money, making and enforcing new laws, enforcing those laws within their own territory, exerting sovereignty over territory, maintaining their own self sufficient economies, and even issuing citizenship. The only things preventing them from being states is the fact that the government is still called the Board of Directors, their head of state and head of government is a CEO and the various Terroare nations own most of the stocks. The PMCs are the first line of defense against those who would do harm to the Terrans and they are largely romanticised in contemporary culture, always on the front lines, exploring strange new worlds, bringing science and culture to the cold void and defending those who can’t defend themselves. Many Terran youths put themselves through the school system and higher education just so they can pass the stringent standards required to join the corporations and receive citizenship.
You would think that vilifying the Sith would widespread among the terroare and you wouldn’t be wrong back during the days of the war but strangely, the Terrans are a rather forgiving people. Reduced to about a couple hundred thousand people, the Terroare could not afford to have enemies nor could they afford to pursue any old grudges so they started forgiving and apologizing to everyone they could find and they generally received pity and well wishes from their former enemies who had generally recognized the Terroare as a formidable but honorable foes. As is well know, when people act a certain way, they start to think that way as well, and after a few thousand years, the Terrans became some of the most genuinely friendliest people in the known galaxy, slow to anger and quick to forgive all but the most heinous crimes. The sith have already been forgiven actually, the united Terroare government only keeps itself distant from the Sith because of the principle of the matter. The grudge against the mandos is perpetuated because both groups continue to rub each other the wrong way and get on each other’s nerves, often in a shooty way.
Their droids are not like the droids of other races which are simple servants, but actual artificial intelligence that boarder on sentience. Thus, the almost sentient ones are referred to as an AIs while the dumber ones are referred to as droids. It is considered bad sport to treat a droid or AI badly unlike for some races and AIs possess all the rights that any organic possesses. AIs and Droids alike make up a fundemental part of terroare society, ranging from civil servants to police and even government officials, though those are rare. AIs likewise, respect and revere the Terroare since they do not feel subjugated and are thankful when they learn of the treatment of droids outside the terroare sector. That is one of the main problems that outsiders run into when dealing with the terroare, mistreating the "simple droids" and thus, dishonoring themselves. The military is segregated, while droids make up about half of the military, they are semi-autonomous but work under Terran officers. Battle droids are not simply autonomous analogs to soldiers but actual soldiers, allowed to develop a personality and form their own opinions as well as speak up when they believe a plan is sub optimal.
On a side note, all Terroare males are whipped and have been even before the exterminatus because somewhere early on, the ideal for a Terroare female could be loosely described as: Quiet, Kind, Good with the kids, Good with her mind, and capable of hitting a rapidly moving target out to 800 yards. It should be known that vibro-glaives and vibro-pikes are considered “ladylike weapons” and are perfectly acceptable for proper ladies to wield. While operating heavy machinery and brutish weapons such as heavy weapons and shotguns are firmly in the realm of men, young girls are encouraged to learn how to snipe at some point in their military career.
There are also Mad Scientist Enclaves that are regulated and checked by the PMCs where scientists of dubious sanity are kept and are allowed to experiment as they please. A good deal of Terroare scientific understanding comes from these enclaves because insane scientists often will devise experiments that sane scientists will not even dream of. Within certain moral limits, “for science” and “4 t3h Evulz” become legitimate excuses to do things when applying for permission and resources from the PMCs. Sociopathy is the norm in the Enclaves but Psychopathy results in revoking the licence and entrance into a mental health facility.
History:The species as a whole developed on the rather cold world known as Exford which was a massive planet on the outer edge of the Goldilocks zone of the G-class star it orbited. The planet had an average gravity of 1.5 earth gravities, and mainly smaller but more numerous oceans, leaving very large tracts of barren land in between. These developed into deserts.
Early on, mammalian and fish life dominated the planet due to the temperatures which forced the inhabitants to adapt in ways that allowed them to keep their temperatures relatively stable. The Terroare were no exception. They were decedent from a rather intelligent cat-like species of animal that descended from the trees in order to forage and hunt for food. The creatures of the planet were all extremely dangerous, each one developing an advanced biological 'RADAR' that allowed each creature to keep tabs on one another. The Terroare however had one thing the other ones didn't, force sensitivity, although it is for some reason, unable to develop beyond simple sensing, it allowed them the biological equivalent of a 'motion tracker' alongside their biological radar.
They discovered how to use primitive tools (sticks and rocks) early , and evolved to walk on two feet, the discovery of how to use fire and it's subsequent extensive use caused them to lose much of the hair on their bodies except for on top of their heads, on their ears, and other areas.
For a while though, they were stuck in the 'stone age' for much longer then they should have as they were still dependent on hunting and gathering. However, the pace quickened after the discovery of farming. Inter-tribal relations were always rather good due to the constant struggle against rapidly evolving predators that got more and more dangerous, forcing the Terroare to develop a co-operative mindset (so deep it became genetic). When writing was developed, they quickly forced everyone to learn it, allowing them to attribute their advancements above the more 'primitive' animals to their pursuit of knowledge. Life however, was still dangerous, and when the star advanced enough to pump out more energy and heat the planet, the animals got fiercer and fiercer so a strong martial heritage was still kept. They advanced quickly through the 'bronze age', the 'iron age', skipping over the dark ages and into the 'renaissance'. As most of the population was at least knowledgeable and due to the high value of intelligence, universal schooling took hold and universities popped up.
It took only 300 years to go from 'renaissance' to 'NASA level' technology. Of course, there were wars, conflict being inevitable, but on the whole, the population was relatively united, allowing for extremely rapid advancement. Due to the planet's abundant resources as well as abundance of heavy metals and radioactive isotopes, they developed nuclear power, fusion, shielding and then finally, FTL travel. They expanded throughout their sector, their technology advancing exponentially before they were contacted by the republic.
The republic was rather confused by the Terroare. The terroare never really switched completely to energy weaponry, preferring sheer kinetic force, nuclear plasma cannons, or missiles. Their firearms ranged from railguns and coilguns to electromagnetic/propellant hybrids and gyro-jets. Missiles equipped with jamming, thrust vectoring, radar guidance, optical guidance, and evasive maneuvering (often all in the same package) were also used extensively, cheaply too. Another thing was that the Terroare were all force sensative, but all attempts by the Jedi order to expand the ability of full blooded Terroare beyond anything but basic sensing were ultimately fruitless. Jedi urging backed by republic funding to do research on hybrids ended with a rather violent death and the program was canceled. The Terroare were also confused by the republic and though the republic tried to integrate them, the Terroare refused, wanting to become an independent nation. The republic agreed.
The Terroare did crave the more unique technology though, the droid brains for one, and the walker technology. These were adapted to suit their own needs and everything was soon integrated into the Terroare technological spectrum. Shipyards pumped out thousands of ships, mainly science and research vessels. Employing republic droids, computers were a dime a dozen but the species still craved more, better, faster, smaller, more powerful computers. Eventually, while republic ships were more powerful, turbolasers giving them an advantage, Terroare ships were arguably more advanced with computers everywhere.
In addition, with the helpful addition of new metals and droid brain heuristics replaced by and improved upon by Terran Computer architecture, the machinery, computers, ships, and droids received a massive boost. Automation went rampant among the terroare worlds and the Terran empire reached it's height at 30 colonized planets with 7 core worlds. Droid technology and artificial intelligence programming became so sophisticated that droids almost became self aware, some actually coming close enough to sentience to be considered sentient beings by Terran society. It was an amalgamation of the two races, the droids, and the Terrans participating in friendly competition that drove research through the roof. Science vessels were regularly breaking boundaries of computer, biological, and natural science. The standard of life skyrocketed on Terran planets and poverty was almost all but forgotten.
Unfortunately, during the great hyperspace war, the sector was caught in the crossfire. Attempting to stay neutral ended up pitting the small nation against the mighty Sith war machine. Terran fleets fought long and hard, giving as good as they got and then some, their droid allies picked up and retooled their fleets into impromptu warships and sent the fleets at the advancing sith armada. It was to little avail, during the campaign, Terran missiles streaked out almost continuously all across the sector, exacting their toll, but not taking enough to save the colonies from dropping like flies, casualties eventually mounting into the billions. The droids fought desperately to save their creators, former masters, and friends, breaking their fleets upon the sith anvil to little use, for every cruiser, every dreadnought, every battleship, frigate, and destroyer that was killed, two, three, and four more stepped up to bolster that tiny breach. Though it only took a few months, the entire Terran sector lay in ruins, the final death toll reached into the trillions, sentient droids and Terrans alike. Exford was left a volcanic wasteland, the surface marred by deep pits that reached all the way to the molten core of the planet itself, spewing lava until the entire planet was ripped to pieces by it's own seismic instability. If that weren’t enough, the sith began hunting down survivors, blasting apart fleeing ships, civilian or not. It was only after the war that the survivors learned that the commander or that force was completely mad.
On the run, out-numbered and out-gunned, the remnants of the race (now reduced to a few hundred thousand civilians and perhaps a couple hundred thousand sentient droids) fled their homes to take refuge with the republic. Perhaps 300 ships remained, 40 civilian, 10 industrial, and one mobile drydock, the rest were small military, none of them larger then cruiser size. For the rest of the war, the Terrans attempted to find shelter and work, but among the influx of refugees, they weren't able to do a thing. Reluctantly, the Terroare auxiliary government (an entity not recognized by the republic) disbanded the remnants of the military, turning them into private military corporations in order to sustain the terrans. The droids put themselves to work on the industrial ships, building, materials and digging around old software for some von neuman replication programming to build a few more mobile drydocks, the newly minted PMCs would take casualties. In the end, 99.998 percent of the Terroare population and 99.83 percent of the droids were wiped out by the time the war died down.
With the terroare empire now completely gone, the remaining auxiliary government created the Terroare Colonization Initiative, forming up the survivors of the civilian populace into three massive fleets and sending them on an exodus to three potential new worlds to call home. The journey lasted quite some time, the race had been hampered and barred by haughty, high and mighty senators who were scrambling for as much power as possible in the power vacuum in the wake of the war. The TCI had only managed to procure substandard supra-light engines to equip their rag tag fleet but it would have to do. Efforts were hampered by corrupt politicians, rouge states, pirates, slavers, warlords, and terrorists, but in time, the fleets settled three worlds, Kiruna, New Exford, and Sagittarius. The three worlds grew up, connected by the Terroare Colonization Initiative but individual in actions and development. As the colonies grew slowly, hampered by lack of international support but with liberal use of new technologies, artificial wombs, cloning, and automation, they eventually developed into fully independent worlds and surpassed several billion inhabitants. Once the billion mark was reached, the Terroare Colonization Initiative began pinpointing additional planets, forming up additional fleets, smaller than the three originals. In total, around 70 fleets were created and sent out into the galaxy, and the TCI shortly disbanded, the original three worlds turned into independent governments.
The Independent Governments however, were still rather wary of the remainder of the galaxy, their couple billion people would be easily overwhelmed by the trillions that any mildly unified powerbloc could field. They created a treaty, creating the United Terroare Sector Command and called back most of the PMCs to form the Terroare Sector Navy. At last since perhaps 200 years, the terrans were at peace. That peace however, was not to last. The power vacuum still existed and a small but ambitious nation was tired of being stepped all over by the other galactic powers, so they sought to make a name for themselves by conquering the closest small nation they could probably survive a conflict with. That nation was the UTSC.
The war lasted 8 years with thousands of casualties on both sides, but 8 years was just enough time for the terroare to bring their nuclear weapons program back up and pumping out even more destructive nukes. The war ended in fire, the other nation burned under a constant barrage of multi-megaton nuclear weapons. After the war however, the UTSC didn't bother subjugating the other nation's planets but instead, simply pulled back and began to patch up it's wounds, not wanting to fight any more. The terran sector continued to expand and do science, building ships, making droids, working with their droid friends, and overall, working towards a nice world. The shipyards expanded and grew, not necessarily turning into a bunch of shipyards, but rather, a large collection of mobile construction rigs. This allowed them to build ships that otherwise, wouldn't be possible for a nation of their size. The PMCs that were left to their own devices continued to grow, taking up their own civilian populations, building their own smaller ships using mobile drydocks and buying massive civilian ships from the planetside populations. The PMCs became nomadic states in all but name but continued to hunt for work, though not completely simply guns for hire but also fields up to and including financial consultation, medical work, heavy engineering, and manufacturing.
The last conflict of the Terroare Sector was with the PMCs Suzuki Fleet Command and Jerico Rapid Response against a remnant of the sith empire from the great hyperspace war. The remnant had amassed a sizable fleet of ships and had struck out at one of the long range exploration fleets that had discovered the planet. Much of the fleet was destroyed but it had called out to several PMCs before the line went dead. SFC and JRR along with a supporting TSN fleet arrived to find the wreckage of almost half of the combat ships destroyed, though the civilian ships had managed to jump out. All that remained of the defending fleet consisted of 5 destroyers, 3 frigates, 11 corvettes, and 30 torpedo boats lead by Battle 192 which was expending it's missiles against the attackers. Determined to not have a repeat of what happened during the great hyperspace war, the UTSC decided to wipe out the remnant before it could become a concern. It took several weeks to knock the ships out of orbit (see blast to tiny pieces with nuclear vengeance) and several months of hard grueling ground combat and orbital bombardment to wipe out the last of the remnant to the very last man. When the smoke had cleared, the Long range exploration fleet had lost too much of it's manpower and resources to continue searching for another planet so they settled down on the newly conquered soil. The SFC and JRR broke off and returned to whatever they were doing before while the TSN escort stayed behind in case something came up.
The most recent conflict was during the last Mandalorian uprising. It wasn't necessarily a war, more like several mandalorian private militaries stumbled across several of the Terroare PMCs. The series of skirmishes was relatively unremarkable with very light casualties on both sides but it was rather expensive as all conflicts are, causing disgruntlement among the terroare population.
