The yorktown class aircraft carrier. What do you do when you run out of ideas for space craft? Take a water ship, adapt it to modern age combat, stick engines and a hyperdrive on it and presto, one crazy piece of abstract art that gets it's job done somewhat. The Yorktown class carrier is exactly that, a yorktown class carrier. It carries planes, what else do you need? Of course, it can only carry about 50 planes in it's interior, so where do you stick the rest? Well, you take magnets and stick them to the flight deck, sure some of the pilots need to do a little EVA to get to their planes but if they don't got suits, they shouldn't be on the boat.
With 8 light turbolasers, 64 light cannons and 32 Gatling blasters, computer controlled, RADAR aimed, locked and loaded, approaching the carrier is almost complete suicide. The thing will stand up to anything less then a corvette pretty well and anything lighter then a heavy destroyer will not get away unharmed. The amount of light weaponry is honestly to much to be healthy, but it does a great job of destroying any aircraft willing to run the gauntlet. Fighters need to run a gauntlet of light cannons and Heavy Gatling blasters that would be more then willing to send some unfortunate individual home in a lunchbox. Bombers have a higher chance of survival but not by much, the Gatling blasters are at the very least good at bringing down shields, once the light cannons go to work, it's all over. Strategic bombers are honestly the worst choice, against any other ship, the massive payload would be devastating, but against a Yorktown, the computer controlled turbo-lasers have a shot deviation of less then 2 milliradians. Ordinance is simply knocked out of the sky by the sheer volume of precision guidance made possible by a Terroare supercomputer equipped CIC.
Strangely for a Terroare ship, this thing actually has blaster type weaponry. This is because it is intended to be low maintainence and easily fixable by any republic or other mechanic, most of whom honestly suck massive [censored] at Hellbore, VLS, slugthrower and computer repair. Computer repair is done by the onboard crew, the rest of the repairs can easily be done by any half competent mechanic.
The ship boasts a fully equipped kitchen and a staff of fully certified chefs (who are also fully certified to shoot things) to provide three proper meals per day. The theory is that good food would keep up the morale of the crew, take their minds off the gunmetal grey walls, stave off homesickness, and keep them healthier, more active, and more effective. The theory proved right, the crew of Yorktown carriers contains some of the most loyal men of most navies to date, barring those of fanatic factions but that is beside the point. Yorktown battlegroups have a total defection count of absolutely zero. Along with a heavier hitting escort and the support ships carrying spare parts, supplies, spare planes, and spare computers, the Yorktown is capable of carrying out any mission assigned to it.
The effectiveness of the carrier combined with it's command and control capabilities and the supercomputer banks makes the Yorktown the core of any battlegroup. Unlike other navies' battlegroups in which smaller ships are structured around a battleship or battlecruiser.
