Name: Nitram Lawvellis
Race: Human
Age: 38
Height: 4'5''
Weight:
Birth place: Nar Shaddaa
Appearance:
You can't look at Nitram without noticing his height. At 4'5'' he is far below the average height for a human. In fact there are only a handful of species that don't tower over him. He is proportionate, so all of his limbs look to be the right size despite his dwarfism. Though it could be said that his head was slightly large for his body, but not by too much. He has simple brown eyes, his eye brows are bushier than most. He wears his hair short, he wants to look professional, and it is a mix of black and blonde. Occasionally he will grow out his beard, but for the most part he is clean shaven, once again he has been told it looks more professional.
When he walks he often has a waddling gait to his stride. He wears luxury clothes from the finest tailors, as befits a rich Senator, but nothing too flashy. He already stands out enough.
Personality:
Nitram is a very intelligent man. Skilled in the use of computers and playing the political game, he prides himself on his ability to think three steps ahead of most people. An avid reader, he has a personal library worth a fortune, and is rarely seen without him reading something. From the lowest of the low he has become very very wealthy. He enjoys his wealth as only those not born with a silver spoon can. But he is not a fool. Working in finance has taught him to be careful with his money, to invest wisely and how easy it is to lose everything. Politics is not just his career, it is virtually his entire life. He has no family, only one true friend, and he spends every waking hour working on his advancement. Make no mistake, he wants to be Supreme Chancellor. Nothing else will satisfy his goals, and perhaps even that. Growing up as a nobody, mocked for his height and lack of physical ability, has made him desperate for power and influence. Now that he has it, he will hold onto it with every fiber of his body. He has no problem with breaking the law to get what he wants, though he is exceptionally careful while doing so.
Bribery and intimidation are his favourite tactics. He has a number of people in his service who gain information for him. He has numerous political and financial contacts, and contacts in less savory places as well. He does, however, have a handful of principles. The protection of the Jedi Order is close to his heart. His newborn self was saved by a Jedi, and he always pays his debts. And he is loyal to those who are loyal to him. But he only has one true friend. He grew up with Malzan, and the two are closer than brothers. He sees Malzan's son, also Nitram, as a nephew. They are his family. And potentially his only emotional weaknesses.
As a youngster his height made him feel powerless and inadequate. He was teased horribly for it. But now it matters little to him. Occasionally there are a few jests made, but it is water of a duck's back to him now. He will do absolutely anything to survive. He is a pragmatic man, he knows he will never win in a physical fight, so instead of fighting them physically, he does it in other ways.

Bio:
The boy who would one day become a Galactic senator was born in the cesspit of Nar Shaddaa. His mother, a bar worker who supplemented her wages by working on her back, didn't realise she was pregnant until her waters broke. She gave birth in one of the rooms above the bar, and that is how Nitram came into the world. He was not his mother's first child, nor her last, but Nitram was different to all the others. Smaller, weaker and little hope of surviving without costly medical aid his mother decided he was not worh the trouble. The baby boy was put out onto the streets and left for dead.
That would of been the end of Nitram's existence. One of countless unwanted children who have died over the centuries. But his life was saved by a Jedi Knight. She heard the cries of the tiny baby and rescued him. After wrapping him in her brown Jedi robes she took him to a hospital. They managed to save his life, and the Jedi promised any bills would be paid for by the Republic. If Nitram was force sensitive he would of been taken to Courscant for training. But he wasn't one of the special few.
Nitram spent five months at the hospital. Numerous complications were discovered and treated. It was also discovered that he suffered from proportionate dwarfism. Once he was healthy enough to leave the care of the doctors and nurses they managed to find him a place in one of the few decent orphanages in the system. That is where Nitram spent the first six years of his childhood.
The orphanage was ran by a strict governess called Miss Lazar. A native of Nar Shaddaa she was a self made millionaire who had dedicated her life to caring for children. She was strict, extremely so, as she had no intention of allowing any of her wards to fall into the numerous black market trades of the moon. Nitram was taught to read and write, and from a young age he showed an above average intelligence. Miss Lazar paid for special tutors and teachers to help the more gifted children in her care. So Nitram grew to love learning from a young age.
Although he wanted for little, he was always warm, fed and he even had an education Nitram didn't enjoy his childhood. He had it better than many of his peers on the moon, but there was no love. He observed a strict time table of study, which left little time for recreational activities. But he did forge one close friendship. A boy who was called Malzar. He had arrived at the same time as Nitram, they were given their names at the same time, and grew up as best friends.
Most of the boys at the orphanage teased him because of his height. Only Malzar didn't. Malzar was tall for his age, the two were a very odd looking pair. The teasing made Nitram feel worthless, useless and ugly. Malzar put an end to it though. One of the older boys was mocking Nitram. He broke down in tears. Malzar taught the boy a lesson, and since that day none of the other children taunted Nitram any more.
But there was a riot through the sector and the orphanage was set alight. Miss Lazar died in the flames, as did everyone inside the building. Nitram and Malzar had left that morning, without consent, to explore the junk yards that they loved so much. There life changed forever after that. No one was left to care for them, no stranger would take in two young boys. Nitram knew they would need to make credits somehow.
They fell in with a local criminal gang. They were nothing major. The leader was a teenage boy with a peach fuzz beard, and most of the boys were under 10. They stole petty things, pick pocketed passing strangers, and their leader, Boz, sold the items to a local fence. Nitram's short stature came in very useful. He could sneak through small windows, hide in small places and made virtually no sound as he moved about.
On one of his missions he was ordered to steal something from a rich crime lord. Nitram was side tracked by the man's private library. He had loved reading in the orphanage, but he hadn't been able to read much in the last few years. He came across a data pad that was loaded with information on computers of all types. Nitram stole it for his own personal use.
During nights he would read the datapad over and over. Most of it went completely over his head, he was only 9 years old or so, but he still learned a lot from the stolen information. He tried to put it to use, when ever he could. Practical experience would be important for him. So, when he could, he logged onto computers when he was out. He carried the datapad with him all of the time, and he soon became skilled with their use. Nitram also found files, incriminating files, on a few of the computers.
He soon realised how valuable information could be when he gave the files he had found to their leader. He was delighted, it proved gross malpractice by a rich politician. Their boss contacted the man, and went about trying to blackmail him. And it worked. They made a small fortune, well Boz did at any rate. The money was squandered however, on drink, drugs and women.
Nitram was furious. He had found the file. He had delivered it to Boz. But he didn't see a single credit. Malzar and Nitram were now 11. Nitram wanted to leave the gang. Go it alone as it were. Nitram was getting better at stealing all kinds of information, and Malzar was 5'9'' despite his age. So they did. One night they left the old pipe expanse that acted as their hideout, and found their own little space to live. It was a hovel to be honest, but at least they could do what ever they wanted.
The young boy became tougher in his year with Malzan. He learned to grasp any, and every, opportunity that came up. To trust no one, but Malzan of course, and that he couldn't afford morales. They had to take whatever came their way, no matter how it arrived at their doorstep. Nitram found daily life a challenge due to his height. There were simple problems he had to overcome. His legs began to ache and cramp when he walked too far or too fast, there were certain things he couldn't reach. It sounds trivial, but when it occurred every day it was tedious.
Nitram was shot in his 15th year, he was in a branch of a hugely powerful bank. By 15 he was a very skilled hacker. He had gotten into their system, and was about to download the information they had been contracted to extract. It was going fine, but then security burst into the room, and fired without warning. He was hit in the arm and arrested.
He was taken to a small jail like room inside the branch, where he was left until morning. The next day a tall man woke him up. He was the manager, but he didn't seem angry. Instead he seemed like a kindly man, he brought him something to eat and drink. He offered him a choice. Come and work for them, or go to jail.
The opportunity to work for a major company was more than he had ever hoped for. And he jumped at the chance, but he had one condition, that Malzan be offered a job too. The man was reluctant at first, until he clapped eyes on Malzan. At 15 he was already 6'1'' and built like a wall. Nitram was given a position in the computers department, while Malzan was given a security position. His first day working for the company was daunting. Everyone was watching him. No one expected a 15 year old dwarf criminal to join their workforce. No one approached him, and Nitram was more than happy to keep himself to himself. Malzan and Nitram were able to rent a small apartment with their combined salary. It was nothing impressive, but to the two young lads it was a palace.
After a few months at the job Nitram noticed discrepancies with the company accounts. Someone was evidently stealing from the bank. He was unsure what he should do. When he asked Malzan he suggested joining in. Skimming money from the bank when it was safe to do so. It was tempting, they could make more money that way than their salaries give them combined, but Nitram couldn't. Greiser Arthus had given him a job, a better life than he ever thought he would have. He decided to investigate further. He tracked the withdrawals to a senior official at the branch. Nitram had undeniable proof now, and he decided to go straight to Mr. Arthus.
Nitram was always greeted warmly by Arthus. He became tongue tied, very unlike Nitram, when he was explaining what he had found. By the time he was finished the manager was furious. He thanked Nitram, promised a reward, and ordered the corrupted official to report to his office immediately. The man was fired the same day.
Three months passed before Nitram heard from Arthus again. He was ordered to come to his office. Arthus told him he had been promoted, he would now be running the bank on Denon. Only the Courscant head branch was more powerful, and he wanted Nitram to come with him. Arthus wanted to make him his personal secretary. The job doesn't sound glamorous, and it wasn't, but it was a stepping stone to a very bright future. All the banks current leaders had started this way, and it would give Nitram an insight into the world of mercantile politics. Nitram wanted it, massively in fact, but he asked for some time to talk it over with Malzan.
The two 17 year olds had known each other all their life, they were brothers in all but blood. And when Nitram came back to their shared apartment it was not only him who had news to share. Malzan had been dating a young raven haired beauty. And she was pregnant. Malzan was going to be a father. It seemed impossible. Surreal. Nitram decided to stay, how could he leave now? But his best friend in all the world said he'd carry him onto the shuttle if he didn't waddle there himself.
Their departure was the worst moment in his life. They would see each other again, but it was the end of an era.
Denon was a considerably richer and cleaner version of the city moon he had spent his entire life on. Nitram felt at home in the new bank and he slotted into his new role with ease. He took Mr.Arthus' calls, handled appointments and was with him in all of his meetings. For the first time he realised how much power and influence the bank had, how much politics was involved, and he liked it. For his entire life he had been nothing. A scrawny dwarf boy. He vowed one day he would be someone. Someone with real power.
He loved his new job, and Denon was a massive improvement on Nar Shaddaa, but he missed Malzan. There had been no opportunity for him to take a holiday, but when Malazan's son was born, and he named it Nitram none the less, his boss allowed him two weeks paid leave. He arrived in Nar Shaddaa without telling Malzan he was coming, he arrived on their old door step and was embraced in a bone crushing hug. They had both reached their final height, more or less. Nitram was 4'4'', but Malzan was 6'7''. The difference was comical. The baby was beautiful, and those two weeks were amazing. Nitram wanted Malzan to transfer, his boss had assured him he would make it happen, but Delphi had parents, loving dotting grandparents who didn't want to lose their grandson. So as Nitram left his best friend for a second time.
Over the next four years Nitram helped his boss increase the bank's profits by 67%. Nitram was given a large raise, he was now a respectfully paid business man, and he began to learn more and more about the political world. His boss was going to run for the Senate seat on Denon, and he made Nitram his campaign manager. The tiny dwarf was mocked by the opposition, but he made it his task to repay Mr. Arthus by getting him elected. He was given a huge resource fund, and he used it to great effect.
The opposition was the incumbent Senator, a popular man, and Nitram and Mr. Arthus had a mountain to climb to win. While Arthus was making political speeches, meeting with high flyers and expanding his list of contacts Nitram was digging up dirt on the current Senator. He found out he had once enjoyed an affair with an intern. She was more than happy to tell her story, with a little encouragement, but Nitram encouraged her to spice the story up. He knew that the Senator had the backing of most of the planets wealthy Conservative donors. So when the story broke that the Senator had not only slept with the young intern, but that the virtual orgy had contained at least two strapping young men, it looked like the donors were about to jump ship.
When the Senator demanded everyone involve take a lie detector test no one complained. The Senator chose the expert who would carry out the test, no doubt he was bought and paid for by the Senator's allies, but he met with an unfortunate accident on the eve of the test. The replacement was much more pliable. Nitram did some research and found out his sister was in jail, and that he had campaigned for her early release. Nitram met the man in person, promising that the new Senator would be happy to support the campaign, and to back it financially. The results came back in their favour.
With the Conservative donors lost it was anyone's game. Nitram could do nothing to secure the electoral victory, but he ensured that it would be a very close run thing. But they won by 0.15% of the vote. Nitram had never told Arthus what he had done, plausible deniability was a beautiful thing, but he knew. And was hugely grateful.
They moved to Courscant where the 23 year old Nitram was pointed An Associate Planetary Representative, representing the non-native minority on the planet Denon. It was not the proper use of the position, who were meant to reprsent religious or ethnic minorities of the planet, but it was his first real taste of power. And he loved it. He could not vote, unless Senator Arthus was away and he was delegated the responsibility, but his political opinions were now listened too. However his main role was protecting the Senator from his enemies, not physically of course, but pre-empting their political attacks, spinning media reports in his favour and attacking his enemies in turn. He had never enjoyed anything as much as politics.
Nitram had been in contact with Malzan since he had left, but had only seen him a handful of times. Now he used his influence to get him a position on the Senate Guard. The lure of Courscant was too much to pass up, and Malzan and Dephi moved to the planet. Nitram spent most of his spare time at their home. His life was better than it ever had been, and so was Malzan's. He found immense pride in working for the Senate, protecting democracy.
Personally Nitram never cared much for democracy. Once he had been given a taste of power he had no intention of ever giving it up. He fully intended to become a Senator though, and he spent his time making political allies and useful contacts. And he had never forgotten how useful information was. He began to pay others to do the dirty work now, he had dozens of regular people reporting to him with titbits of information, and occasionally a truly juicy piece.
Nitram's political views were largely shaped by Senator Arthus. But there was one big divide between the two of them. The Jedi Order. Arthus was an out spoken critic. He believed they were too powerful, too independent and too untrustworthy. He wanted them to be brought under direct Senatorial control, with a political appointee to be pointed to the Jedi Council to oversee all decisions. Nitram had been told that a Jedi Knight had saved his life since he was old enough to crawl. He owed them a debt of gratitude, and he had never let such debts go unpaid. There was little he could do while he was a Representative however, he simply refused to speak out against his political master. But he did begin to meet with other like minded Representatives.
After three years as an APR, and his experience on Denon, Nitram had learned more than any one needed to know about politics on metropolitan city worlds and mercantile banks. But he believed he would need experience in as many types of world as possible. So, with the Senator's support and approval, Nitram resigned his post and joined the Republic diplomatic corp.
He was appointed as a political attache to the Embassy on Cerea. The post was comfortable, Cerea was a peaceful independent planet. The planet itself was very different. Green living plants were a novelty to Nitram. And the Cereans were very different to the type of people he had previously met. He could no longer simply beat-brow, bribe and threaten his opposites into doing what he wanted. And he had no spies or contacts on Cerea. Nitram had to learn how to convince people with only his opinion. To manipulate without any of his former advantages.
In one meeting with a Cerean representative Nitram was trying to settle a trade dispute in the Republic's favour. He thought he was doing quite well. His points were good, to the point and succinct. But by the end of the discussion he had agreed to virtually all of Cerea's wishes. He had lost completely, and he hated it. Nitram realised he still had a lot to learn, he was only 27 after all, and his political life was still relatively new.
The Cerean posting lasted almost two years. In the time he spent most of his day advising the Ambassador on political issues. He mastered the Cerean language, studied their history and culture. He didn't like the Cereans. They seemed too pompous. Off puting and unapproachable. Nitram learned that he couldn't end up like that if he wanted to go far in politics. So he smiled a little more, asked people how they were in the halls and feigned care. He also became skilled in manipulating with only his voice. The Cereans were just as good, and many were better, but he had a reasonable chance of getting what he wanted out of them.
Orders arrived soon after his 29th birthday, and he left Cerea for Geonosis. He was thankful for the posting, once again a completely different culture to any where he had been previously. The experience of working among a caste system would be a new one for sure. Nitram disliked the planet. It was too warm, too dusty. The Archduke was a young Geonosian who had a dislike for the Republic. Nitram made it his duty to ensure a friendly government was installed.
Unlike the Cereans Nitram found that the Geonosians were far more susceptible to bribes. When he arrived he, though through a third party, bought a number of informants. Mostly they were drones at first. Unlikely to hear anything of note, but you never know what servants would overhear. The Archduke's influence among the other hives was not what he would of hoped. So Nitram visited many in term, he said he needed to understand the political culture of the planet. One such hive council was under the control of Droggle. He resented the Archduke, had a position at court and was a powerful Geo in his own right. Nitram aimed to put him in control of the planet.
His superior on Geonosis was reluctant to support him at first. But when Nitram pointed out he, as Ambassador, would get most of the acclaim he was able to be persuaded to let Nitram get on with things. In truth Nitram always suspected he just wanted a promotion off the Planet. But the ambassador didn't get involved personally, if it went wrong Nitram knew he would get the blame.
In Cerea he learned the value of patience. It took years to lay the ground work. Nitram had no wish to start a war. A Palace coup d'etat was his ambition. And luckily the Archduke was incompetent. He had also appointed one of the drone class to an advisor. When Nitram heard that he almost cried fore joy. That he could use against him. It allowed him to secure the support, or at least neutrality, of many of the most powerful hives. At the same time Droggle mysteriously found enough money to host massive gladiatorial games, entrance free of charge, for the public. In Cerea donating to charities, building hospitals etc would help one to a position of power. In Geonosis it was blood, death and violence.
The sheer size of the games drew crowds from across the planet. It also allowed all the high-flyers to meet without suspicion. With unofficial Republican support they decided they would act. Their pretense was to "restore the ancient traditions of Geonosis, to protect the governance of our world from evil advisors and save the Archduke's royal person." They only announced their plans after the event however. They were all present, with their guards naturally, for a huge festival in the Archduke's official residence. When his drone advisor entered the room, and was placed at the Archduke's right hand side, the conspirators ordered the Archduke's detention. He called on his guards, but he found that they had been replaced with other, unfamiliar, faces. In the struggle the ''Archduke's person'' was killed. And Droggle became the new Archduke. He was far more ''Republican-inclined'' than his predecessor.
The Ambassador was promoted, and so was Nitram, he had been with the corp for five years now. He was 33 and was sent to Cathar next. They too respected strength, like the Geonosians, but also honour. Nitram had found that honourable men, or Cathar, were at a disadvantage in politics. They couldn't do what needed to be done. There honour was also easily exploitable. Even those who didn't really have any honour wanted to appear to uphold the codes of honour. He found Cathar rather dull. There were few political intrigues, no plots or coups. He was very nearly killed once. He had discovered some compromising information about a prominent Cathar's less than lawful family history. The big brute backhanded him with his gignatic paw and sent him flying across the room. Nitram was sure he would be killed as the young Cathar approached with his teeth barred, there was nothing he could do to fight, but luckily an elder Cathar arrived at the same time. The families patriarch, who proved much more understanding. From that day on he always had an armed guard with him.
Cathar was exceptionally dull. So when the chance to work with the Corporate Alliance came up he jumped at it. Scheming rich bankers had been missing in his life for some years now. The Alliance were ruthless when it came to protecting their assets. And when he could, and when it was not harmful to the Republic, Nitram was more than willing to assist. If a few worlds had to suffer for hundreds of billions in profit, what of it? Especially when the grateful alliance were willing to donate a small portion of the money to their small friend. He became close with the Magistrate of the Alliance, not friends, but political allies. And he was so happy being back in the mercantile world he was about to leave the corps and take a role on the Directorate. But then he was informed Senator Arthus' had died.
Senator Arthus returned to Denon for his father's funeral. At the funeral there had been a terrorist attack. Anarchists had blew up Senator Arthus and half of his family. Nitram was upset, but he acted quickly. He had liked Arthus, was loyal to him, but their relationship was one of colleagues, not friends. He wasted no time in manouvering himself to over take Arthus as Denon's next Senator.
As far as he could see there was only one man who could oppose him. A protege of the Senator who had served before Arthus. Nitram traveled to Denon, to pay his respects, and to meet his future opponent. The two discussed their future's at length. Nitram was the favourite. Popular, he had worked hard to build up a facade of caring and decency, and with support from many prominent contacts and allies. But Nitram knew what a fickle pregnant dog politics was, if he could make 100% sure he would win, well he'd be stupid if he didn't try. His opponent knew he was unlikely to secure a victory, so he was open to suggestions. When Nitram assured him a place on the Board of Governors at the Bank everything was settled. Nitram had removed all the real opposition, and his new friend had gained a powerful, and tremendously well paid, position.
He won the victory with a landslide in the by-election. When he took his seat, as Senator Nitram Lawvellis, he was happy. But not fulfilled as he thought he would be. He still wanted more.

"The Senator from Naboo owes me a large favour, ask him if he can't intervene for us." Senator Nitram Lawvellis told a hologram that was hovering above his sleek black desk. He sat in a comfortable chair, especially made for his small stature, that cradled him nicely. In his right hand was a glass of the finest Corellia whiskey, a recent gift from a business contact on the planet. He took a sip and continued. "Our competitors on Naboo can't be allowed to successfully lobby the Senate, it will be disastrous for my investments in the sector. If our Honourable friend can't sway them around to our way of thinking then I am sure you can think of a less...honourable solution to the problem?"
A chuckling sound filled the room. "Of course, Sir. Whatever the outcome, there will be no problems for you on Naboo within 48 hours." The transmission ended, the hologram disappeared, and Nitram sighed. He stood up and looked over the planet metropolis of Courscant. His whole life had been spent on city planets. Nar Shaddaa, then Denon and now Courscant. He was proud of how far he had climbed, and at only 26 he was one of the youngest Senators. A chime came from a small console on his desk.
"A Senate Guard is here to see you, Senator." The voice was that of his new secretary. She had only been hired a few days ago, so far she had proven adequate to the job.
"Let him in,'' he replied.
The doors parted and in bounded a man, 6'7'' at least, in bright blue uniform. Malzan was his oldest, dearest and only friend. He had not seen him in a few weeks, they had both been extremely busy. They hugged. "Ah, Malz, you made it. A drink?"
There was no need to wait for a reply, Nitram knew the answer. He poured his friend a glass of Whiskey and handed it to him. ''Bloody expensive that, a gift from an associate of mine. So don't swill it like the usual dishwater you drink."
"That dishwater will get you drink al' the same though." He had a point.
"So how is the wife and kid?"
"There good," Malz took one of the large seats in the corner of the room, and Nitram took the opposite one. There were four black seats, a small glass table in the centre. "He's doing well, in school I mean. I'm happy for the lad, you know he has a better life than either of us did.'' They both shared a laugh.
"Do you remember the time, when we were still with Boz, when you shaved his little beard?" Nitram laughed. "...he was so angry, I thought he would kill the both of us.''
Malz laughed too. "Aye, I remember...we bolted out the place, and didn't come back for a week. We had to find some really valuable stuff before he'd let us back in like."
"Does the lad like his school?" Nitram had paid for him to attend one of the finest institutions on Courscant.
"Aye, lots of work mind, and I still think he wants to join the Navy. Seems like a waste to me. He could be some rich lawyer or banker with that education."
Nitram tutted. "He wants to be like his father, service is in his blood."
