Culture: The Selruuse culture has been built on a millenia of exploration and war, resulting in a rigid meritocracy, although this has been changing in recent years. In their culture, females are usually looked-down upon in terms of skills and potential, though their have been some exceptions. While males are regarded as holy and prestigious, along with being considered worthy of owning a family and a career.
The culture has a set of rules known as the Kal-ruse, which involves these five principles: 1. Do not question any superior. 2. Obey your family, no matter how absurd the task may seem. 3. Never attack other members of your family or tribe, no matter their crimes. 4. Punish the un-lawful in the most extreme and clean-cut ways possible, but do try to remain humane. 5. Failure to your tribe, family, or faction must be punished or redeemed with a sacrifice. These rules, speculated to be written well before the creation of the Republic, are obeyed with the highest esteem and respect, even to the point where entire building are dedicated to them.
Speaking of family, Selruuse families usually consist of one father, one mother, and two children. Though in times of prosperity or famine, these numbers have been known to vary. Selruuse culture is very much blended with wealth and mining. Indeed, their homeworld is a spice-rich planet, and many Selruuse have been recruited for deep mining operations in darkness, due to their excellent vision in the dark.
In addition, they show a keen interest in philosophy, which is a key part of their main religion, Cenvi. Cenvi is based around three principles, along with the five rules. These three principles are: Family, Wealth, and Knowledge. Despite it being not recognized as a rule in Cenvi, territory is mentioned as important in more than 3 chapters of the book of Cenvi. The book and religion of Cenvi is based off of the prophet, well, Cenvi. The book was written by Cenvi himself, detailing his journey's on the planet during the years leading up to the first space exploration. Cenvi notices the increasing corruption, and decided to do something about it. However, instead of the countless coups like before, Cenvi managed to take the throne peacefully, and started the first spacial empire for the Selruuse. Near his death, he constructed the set of rules that are known as the Three Principles, which are still followed and honored by nearly every Selruuse to this day.
History: Native to the planet of Selru, the Selruuse have a history as old as the galaxy itself. Known to possibly be one of the oldest sentient species, we've uncovered about 200 inscriptions, writings, and pictures from before the Republic itself, and even what appears to be a ship. Many of the older inscriptions show what used to be a relatively solitary farming species, until 'they' arrived. About 20 of the inscriptions and pictures show an alien race with a long head and two eyes on the side enslaving the Selruuse, however this possibly was the best thing that could've happened to them. This act united the Selruuse, and managed to drive them off the planet, however, the aliens retaliated with a bombardment, but stopped, due to the rare mineral known as 'Loui'. Although it is unknown why Loui was so valuable, perhaps for construction reasons, but we know today that it is all but gone. The Selruuse managed to give them a large amount of Loui, which managed to put the aliens on hold, and even overlook them. The Selruuse, knowing that they wouldn't be overlooked for long, put immense focus on research, and soon built a massive planetary gun, which is thought to be a gauss-cannon. But, before the Selruuse could start the campaign, the aliens seemed to contract a devastating disease, which drove them away. The Selruuse celebrated, but it wasn't long before the first of many internal conflicts developed, which resulted in a 300-year long civil war.
Near the end of the war, the planetary economy boomed after the finding of rare gems, and the refining of spice, and this is when Cenvi came in. Noticing the increasing corruption, Cenvi managed to start a movement which, slowly, overtime gained power, and, after a long 47-years of campaigning, finally took advantage of a large power vacuum left after Iuune the Great died and failed to produce an heir. Now, Cenvi was probably the first and only native Selruuse leader to be fair and just, but he did put great interested in territorial expansion, both to gain remembrance, and to boost the economy. Finally, about one-thousand years before the creation of the Galactic Republic, the golden age of the Selruuse commenced. Although Cenvi died before his colonial dreams could be fully achieved, his son, Cenvi II, established a massive empire, and gained immense wealth, however, they encountered an old rival. One of the many military records from this golden age describes a battle with 'them' again over control of an ice planet, here are some of the excerpts of the most interesting parts:
"We had been ordered by his majesty to push their dying empire back.......Soon i had commenced the firing of the main cannon, and was greeted by the nice orange beam....."
Although these insights seem minor, it proves what may have helped in the downfall of the race that had occupied the galaxy before the Republic, along with insight into their technology.
It is at this point that the most important mineral was found on the Ice planet of Juma VI, a crystal known as 'Mythei'. This gem is very solid, but glows in a beautiful purple aura, and can be molded into designs and other things. From this point on, we've seen numerous pictures of the most prestigious kings wearing this purple gem, and this is also the part where things get ugly. The Selruuse, after over 3,000 years of galactic domination, or so they thought, were getting very cocky, and the old ways of tyrannical rulers began to set in. After the most gruesome ruler set in, Porul the Terrible, the Selruuse began to question their abilities and whether they were the only alien species left. Then, a massive recession struck them, and for about 3,000 years, the economy was in ruin, left to die by much of the territory-hungry tyrants. It is at this point that everything Cenvi had hoped to accomplish was destroyed.
It all started on the remote colony of Yuni II, where a group of Selruuse split apart, attempting to re-create the infamous government Cenvi had set up, but instead through violence. A full-scale civil war was launched, driving the species into ruin. Entire systems were lost from the maps as plotters focused only on the enemy, not the planets around them. The ever-wavering support of the monarch finally snapped, and soon, there was none left, except in the place of the massive military armada that the last king, Jetv III had established. The rebels were pushed back and confined to a small spot of space known as the 'Remote Regions', discovered four millenia ago, which we know as Corellia. Rebel scouts had reported 'Strikingly advanced Loyalist ships', but what they did not know was that these were Republic ships, and the Selruuse feeling of technological dominance dwindled when a Loyalist ship fired upon a Hammerhead cruiser attempting to reach them, resulting in armed conflict. Relieved, the Rebel scouts made contact with the mysterious outsiders, and soon had gained pity within the Republic, and had full military support. At this point, the out-dated Gauss and Proto Cannons of the Selruuse fleet were no match for the Republic ships, and were squashed within about a three-month war. Soon after, the Selruuse Rebels handed full control over to the Galactic Republic, but were rich as ever with the vast spice and gem resources.
Following Republic control, many Selruuse are startled by all the new and interesting technology and trade before them. Sensing opportunity, the Selruuse gained a reputation as being good, honest and loyal traders, along with having an excellent starship company, Selru Incorporated. Then, about 300 years ago, the Selru way hyperway was created, linking the Outer Rim with the Core Worlds, and Selru being a very important supply stop. Soon, the planet experienced massive growth, and within two centuries, a massive planetary city rivaling Nar Shaadaa sprung up. The next 50 years had unexpected growth, and companies grew at an alarming rate, and one of the largest arms and ship manufactures in the galaxy. However, when the war with the Sith started, the Selruuse people were at the forefront of the conflict, and proved to be one of the most critical planets for Republic rule. One of the first Republic victories was at the Battle of Selru, but at a heavy price. The city and planet recently have been assisting in medical operations, along with producing alot of the Republic's gear and minerals. However, the Selruuse are enjoying easy profits cranking out gear for the Republic, knowing that once the war is over, there'll be a very handsome payment waiting for them, unless, of course, they're destroyed in the Sith Offensive.
